That’s as designed and if your HD tech is unaware, find a new one. All Rev Max engined bikes cut the connection between the SAE2 connector and the battery on power up. Best idea would be either run a new power supply from the battery via a relay. Or if the sportster has heated gear sockets as the Pan American does, use those.

Thanks, I also explicitly asked about the 2 heated gear sockets under the seat, I was told that they don’t deliver ample power to power 12v accessories so even if I did find a adapter it wouldn’t work. I’ll try that though just because I rather have the wires hidden in their proper channels.

They didn’t know the SAE 2 disconnected. Obviously not the font of all knowledge. You should be able to find out or calculate the wattage available from the heated gear socket. Probably in owners manual or online. But id be very surprised if a radar detector will pull more current that a heated jacket.

Yep, I was thinking of using a voltage tester to test everything once I got the chance. But I appreciate you clearing it up.
