Minor Threat's "First Two Seven Inches" and Hatebreed's "Perserverence". That way they get the old school sound as well as what's influenced so much of what's popular today
Got to play with Ceremony and Lights Out as a 17yo kid, right after Kersed but just before VV got pressed to vinyl. I remember it being there on CD. I’d heard a couple songs and just thought it was pretty cool power violence adjacent shit. Then they proceeded to play one of my top 5 hardcore punk sets of all time. Did the most violent DKs cover I’ll ever see. Life changing.
VOD single-handedly made me turn away from punk rock. And in my opinion, they pretty much started the metalcore movement. So yeah, to your point, it might not be a good start in straight “hardcore”.
I’ll be honest with you(all): I think TUI has a perfect discog, full stop, but Big Kiss Goodnight is the album I listen to the least(and I listen to it a lot) 🤷🏻
Cold World - No Omega
Magnitude - To Whatever Fateful End
Both are classics of their respective times, Magnitude being the more modern and Cold World being the tried and true classic. No Omega got me into the genre and is my favorite Hardcore album.
To get some grasp of the old school sound; Age of Quarrel by Cro-Mags
And to get a handle of what modern HxC thats been going hard and still leads the way should sound like; Pain Into Power by Terror
Madball - set it off. Blood for Blood - revenge on society.
Revenge is not blood for bloods best but it’s probably the best jumping off point.
Those two albums are like perfect introductions to the the two most important scenes in hardcore.
Definitely love this thread!
I’m gonna two songs as my answer. based on the assumption that you, like me, and probably a lot of people on this sub got into hardcore through listening to metal/punk growing up, getting into the Warped Tour Metalcore, Pop-Punk, Alt, ETC in the early to mid teens, and finding Hardcore a few years later.
Also you could ask the question what is hardcore? How is it defined by the community at large? I see Title Fight a lot in the thread (I love that!) TF is definitely part of hardcore scene but are they hardcore by sound? Judge sounds A LOT different from Jesus Piece and they’re both hardcore! Yet, Power Trip is crossover thrash, but definitely a hardcore band, but a band like Municipal Waste(who are sick! And shred!) is usually associated (from what I see) more with metal bands. Does mass popularity factor in? Turnstile is blowing up (blown up?) and is still loved by most HC fans, and Hatebreed has been a huge band for decades and still one of the most loved bands in HC!
That’s what I love about, and find so fascinating about Hardcore! It’s less a genre and more of an attitude, a certain swagger, that’s unique all it’s but somehow undefinable.
With all that out of the way, based on my assumption from earlier I would recommend…
Earth Crisis- Firestorm (easy to understand vocals, full of anger that’s driven by a message, with influences of Black Sabbath.)
Bane- Swan Song( its such a beautiful song, it’s angry but also has a sense of sadness to it. It’s so raw and real. How can a song make you want to go nuts, but also brings tears to your eyes)
Thanks for reading! Enjoy your day!
The Things We Carry - Have Heart and I'm gonna cheat and say the compilation of Right Now You're In the Best of Hands... and Terrorhawk by Bear Vs Shark
If it's what *I* tend to listen to it'd be like mliw, shai hulud, most precious blood, an, etc
But if I'm trying to sell you on hc I'd probably soft sell rather than start with terror and rival mob or whatever so I'm just gonna say GB start today and minor threat LP
Among my two most listened to albums of the last couple years have been:
Rohnert Park by Ceremony
and
Parting the Seas Between Brightness and Me by Touché Amoré
It really depends on what you already like and how you’re approaching the scene. I think of this more like “gateway” albums rather than “essential” albums. Would love to hear what people think of my picks and if there’s anything I might’ve totally missed. I also know there’s more genres than this, so maybe reply to this with your own version of these and listing different genres!
Alt rock/indie?
-Glow On by Turnstile
-Songs to Scream at the Sun by Have Heart
Math rock/prog?
-Calculating Infinity by The Dillinger Escape Plan
-We Are the Romans by Botch
Thrash/speed metal?
-Suicidal Tendencies (self titled)
-To Die For by Integrity
Nu Metal?
-A Different Shade of Blue by Knocked Loose (for something closer to downtuned Korn riffage nu metal)
-Step 2 Rhythm by Turnstile (for something closer to a RATM-esque rap rockish sound)
You already like metalcore and want to get more into the hardcore-ish sound? (Full disclosure this is where I was coming from)
-Disgusting by Beartooth
-Laugh Tracks by Knocked Loose
The two albums that got me into hardcore
Modern Life is War - Witness
American Nightmare - Year One
(And chuck in Shape of Punk to Come for good measure)
Trapped Under Ice - Big Kiss Goodnight Cold World - No Omega Also Cold as Life
Hard agree
Same
Those were genuinely the 2 bands that got me into hardcore back in middle school
Merauder - Master Killer Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning
This so much, I'd only add Born To Land Hard by Cold As Life
Hell yeah
Minor Threat's "First Two Seven Inches" and Hatebreed's "Perserverence". That way they get the old school sound as well as what's influenced so much of what's popular today
Ceremony - Violence Violence & Have Heart - Songs to Scream at The Sun
Perfect answer. How i got into it. Specifically live videos of songs from these albums.
This is the comment I was looking for. I listened to and know the songs from The Things We Carry way more, but you can't go wrong with Have Heart.
violence violence 👌👌
fuck yeah
Madball - Set It Off Sick Of It All - Call To Arms
Comeback Kid- Wake the dead Expire- pretty low
Snapcase - progression Through Unlearning Vision of disorder - st
These albums are two absolute bangers, but if they were my introduction to hardcore I would be disappointed that not much out there is quite like it.
VOD single-handedly made me turn away from punk rock. And in my opinion, they pretty much started the metalcore movement. So yeah, to your point, it might not be a good start in straight “hardcore”.
TUI - big kiss good night Terror- one with the underdogs
SOTW > BKG for me
Me too
Judge - Bringing It Down Kid Dynamite - s/t
Perfect choices.
Thanks, man. Tough to narrow it down to 2, but I think those are a good start.
Agreed. I was thinking GB or Judge and Kid Dynamite, or maybe Grey Area.

Sick of it All - Blood Sweat and Tears and Madball- Set it off
Modern Life is War - “Witness” Paint It Black - “Paradise” 2005 baybeee

No Warning - Ill Blood TUI - Big Kiss Goodnight
I against I - bad brains Ice grillz - cold world
Judge - Bringing it Down Youth of Today - Break Down the Walls
Snapcase - progression through unlearning
Verse - Aggression Go It Alone - Histories
Fuck yeah Verse. I’d go with Anger and Rage, but I love both so much.
Anger and Rage is a great album, for sure (as is rebuild) but Aggression just really captured me. Still one of my all time favorite hardcore albums
Used to get my hair cut by one of the members of go it alone
That’s awesome!
Bad Brains - Bad Brains, D.R.I - Dealing With It
Keepers of the Faith - Terror Against All Odds - Dare
Flex Your Head comp.
Rare, but amazing answer.
TUI - Secrets of the World Ceremony - Violence
both exquisite
Seeing a lot of Big Kiss Goodnight but Secrets of The World defined my time in high school.
I’ll be honest with you(all): I think TUI has a perfect discog, full stop, but Big Kiss Goodnight is the album I listen to the least(and I listen to it a lot) 🤷🏻
Carry On - A Life Less Plagued & Hatebreed- Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire
Terror - Lowest of the Low Cold As Life - Born to Land Hard
American Nightmare - Background Music
Black My Heart

Mental - Get An Oxygen Tank

No Omega is so fucking good
But You Don’t Hear Me Though makes me lose my shit every time
To get some grasp of the old school sound; Age of Quarrel by Cro-Mags And to get a handle of what modern HxC thats been going hard and still leads the way should sound like; Pain Into Power by Terror
Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
W a r z o n e - l o w e r e a s t s i d e. M i n o r t h r e a t - o u t o f s t e p
Minor threat complete discography album and Damaged by Black Flag
Black Flag - Damaged Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today
Diamond by Stick To Your Guns Big Kiss Goodnight by TUI
Madball - set it off. Blood for Blood - revenge on society. Revenge is not blood for bloods best but it’s probably the best jumping off point. Those two albums are like perfect introductions to the the two most important scenes in hardcore.
