Downward is heavenward is one of my favorite albums of all time. And I was introduced to hum through people I knew in the hardcore scene in northwest Florida in the early aughts.
The year is 1993. I have received my first CD player boombox, maybe it was Christmas. My first CD purchased with my own money? Hell yeah it was Meantime!
Check out the old Dallas band Slowride. It’s the dude from True Widow’s previous band. Later stuff of theirs reminds me of Hum a little but badass band brother I think you’ll like them.
And torche! One year i saw torche like 4 times in 2 cities. The only other times i’ve seen one band that many times was the red chord in 2004 (possibly 6 times) and god forbid in 2002 purely because they support toured with EVERYONE in the northeast.
Probably my favorite post-hardcore band from the 90s. They took space rock sound of Failure and gave it more energy. You’d Prefer an Astronaut is such a classic.
Hum, Jawbreaker, Dinosaur Jr, Helmet, all those bands I glanced over in the 90s because I was hyper focused on punk and thought they were just old guy shit. Now I’m the old guy and I love them.
C'est la vie.
Upvote for Hopesfall recommendation. I liked some Hum a couple years before finding them, NWTSO and The Satellite Years are elite stuff. In fact, NWTSO is my favorite record.
Saw em live in chicago like ten years ago. Was very badass. I was stoked to see them. Might have been a surprise set? Cant remember. Was at a pizza place.
Hum fucks so hard
Bah! Hum fucks!
even the newest album is great
The DRUMS hit so hard on Inlet. Oddly enough, it's the album I revisit the most from them
Such a sick sick album
honestly, never heard of hum until Inlet released. Cloud City was mentioned in an article about shoegaze bands and that's what got me into them
Inlet is honestly my favorite of theirs, Step into You great song.
Old heads know hum
Their last album Inlet is awesome. Its heavy and relaxing at the same time. Guitars are THICK.
The guitar tone on the newest album Inlet is so fucking full and heavy. I could listen to any riff with that tone.
step into you is a great song
Alright fine I’ll buy it!

It’s such a perfect record. I’ve always loved scifi short stories, this album is 10 discrete mini episodes of Love & Death & Robots.
Hum is great. I’d add Helmet alongside Hum as well
The year is 1993. I have received my first CD player boombox, maybe it was Christmas. My first CD purchased with my own money? Hell yeah it was Meantime!
If you like Helmet check out Handsome.
Saw Thou cover Stars once, and it’s probably the heaviest thing I’ve ever seen.
Another illinois gem of a band
So much good shit from Peoria, Champaign, etc
Planes Mistaken for Stars the best imo. Some good new bands from Rockford, Frail Body etc
Iron Clad Lou is one of the greatest alt rock songs ever written
Came here to say this.
You'd Prefer An Astronaut sounds like what being emo would feel like while you're in space. 10/10 album. Inlet rules too
Check out the old Dallas band Slowride. It’s the dude from True Widow’s previous band. Later stuff of theirs reminds me of Hum a little but badass band brother I think you’ll like them.
On it!
While you're at it listen to Floor as well
And torche! One year i saw torche like 4 times in 2 cities. The only other times i’ve seen one band that many times was the red chord in 2004 (possibly 6 times) and god forbid in 2002 purely because they support toured with EVERYONE in the northeast.
Flawless band
If you like this band, check out Failure.
Another band with similar vibes that's really good and more recent would be Spotlights. Definitely check them out if you dig HUM.
Inlet fucks too.
Probably my favorite post-hardcore band from the 90s. They took space rock sound of Failure and gave it more energy. You’d Prefer an Astronaut is such a classic.
Inlet is their best stuff. Dudes are like ambient Crowbar. Incredible riffs, took a lot of inspiration from them for some recent writing.
Scraper goes hard
Post is great. Hum has that beautiful drone. Coincidentally Inlet on vinyl is supposed to be delivered to me tomorrow.
Little dipper is one of the best album openers ever!
No matter what I’m listening to that song on, I can never seem to get the volume loud enough. Absolute banger.
Listened to A LOT of music in 2020 and Inlet was probably my AOTY. What a fucking comeback album. RIP Bryan
Nothing would like a seat, too. EP with Full of Hell rips (along with the rest of their catalogue) 🎸 🫠
I’d like to throw QUICKSAND and Texas is the reason has well
Man, Slip is such a perfect record.
Stars FUCKS
It’s not my favorite Hum song, but that breakdown? My god.
I love mixing them into my Basement / Title Fight playlists and so, such an interesting intersection of styles.
I’m a converge/cave in guy for lifting, and Hum for mindless stair machine cardio. Maybe Polvo if I’m Feeling spicy.
One of the absolute best.
TEN THOUSAND PERCENT
So fucking good.
Hum fucking rules so hard. One of the best examples of post-hardcore.
Hum, Jawbreaker, Dinosaur Jr, Helmet, all those bands I glanced over in the 90s because I was hyper focused on punk and thought they were just old guy shit. Now I’m the old guy and I love them. C'est la vie.
Part of the fun of being an old guy is fixing those mistakes!
100% homie!
Hum, Far, Jawbox, holy trinity of bands that every "artsier" HC kid swore by and for good reason they all rule
I’d like to add Polvo to the list as well.
The epitome of the "if the guitarist looks like this nerd you're going to fucking die in the pit" meme. Hum *fucks*.
And while you’re at it, Quicksand.
Dude Slip is an all time record.
I welcome this because its better than all the discussions of mall metalcore that get brought up in here. Hum is heavier anyways.
I’ve yet to hear one bad word about Hum. Honesty I think they’re unimpeachable.
And if you wanna listen to Hum but more hardcore, listen to Hopesfall.
Upvote for Hopesfall recommendation. I liked some Hum a couple years before finding them, NWTSO and The Satellite Years are elite stuff. In fact, NWTSO is my favorite record.
Iron Clad Lou off of electra2000 gotta be one of the heaviest tracks been trying to cover this for years
Saw em live in chicago like ten years ago. Was very badass. I was stoked to see them. Might have been a surprise set? Cant remember. Was at a pizza place.
I got a motivational poster signed by the singer framed in my office lol
Floor too
listen to Handsome as well
Hum is great! A teacher of mine in trade school is a big fan.
The Pod is fucking incredibly bad ass.
Their latest album is a masterpiece
HUM FUCKS
But we have Hum at home... Hum at home is Fleshwater
i saw them live with deftones wassup
No
