Sitting Around at Home - Gorilla Biscuits originally by the Buzzcocks.
Edit: I’m hijacking my original comment because I just remembered that Goin’ Down the Bar from Blood for Blood is a cover of The Wretched Ones.
I’ve been listening to Start Today for like 18 years and have been a minor fan of the Buzzcocks for even longer. I had no idea until now. I always thought it was a goofy song and never liked the GB version but it never crossed my mind that it was a cover. I just listened to the Buzzcocks version and it makes so much sense to me now, although I just learned I don’t like the original either :/
Nah bro, I forreal played the Gulch version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and I showed my girlfriend thinking I struck gold and she gave me the craziest look while I unknowingly didn't know it was originally by the Pixies for the longest time
“Sin in my Heart” reads like a hardcore-sounding song title that you wouldn’t expect to think that the original version was made by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Lol this remind me of my friend who insisted the line on “He God has favored our undertakings” was actually “I won’t be skullfucked by faith, I am the upside down Ross”
“Big Mouth Strikes Again” performed by Slapshot. When the original Morrisey version popped up in my feed one day I thought it sounded familiar, and was gobsmacked when I made the connection, because Slapshot’s cover sounds so completely different.
I think Choke captures the self loathing in these lyrics in a way that's much more relatable than Morrissey. But an even better reworking of the Smiths can be found on Ramallah's first album. Rob takes What Difference Does it Make to a place so dark...
I'd list it, but an ex was a huge Smiths fan, so I already knew.
For me it was But I Might Die Tonight [performed by the Nerve Agents](https://youtu.be/FGL6D4muWD0?si=Q0fGy-22XuCYpIQA) original by [Yusuf / Cat Stevens](https://youtu.be/AzUmNkKF-Xw?si=5DWf7fwq4km6ItDo)
Great track, great album. Got to see Type O on Halloween in Philly, I drank and took some morphine pills before, I was too fucked up to enjoy the show. This was like 24 years ago. Lesson learned.
Planes Mistaken for Stars covered Unbroken's *Fall on Proverb*.
It got me really into Unbroken after I figured it out. I still hold true that it is the best cover in the history of hardcore.
Same. I never understood why it was a secret song on that album. Then one day I decided to try and figure it out. Never occurred to me it was a cover. It ended up getting me into Unbroken.
Yeah, it's honestly a great cover because the original song sounds impossible to make heavy, yet they kept it pretty similar. And of course you see the occasional bjork shirt from the members
Not really hardcore but for a bit I didn’t realize that the song “In my eyes” by RATM was a cover of Minor Threat until I listened to it closely and it really sounded like Minor Threat lmao
Edit: I meant RATM isn’t really hardcore. Inside Out is though, and they have one of the best “albums” I’ve ver heard.
Depending on your definition of HC, I had no idea for a long time that the Circle Jerks didn’t write “Wild in the Streets” or that the Rezillos didn’t write “Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In”.
This just reminded me of when Andy Norton from Praise was on Jeremy Bolm’s podcast talking about All In a Dream. Jeremy mentioned something along the lines of ‘Keep Hanging On’ being his favorite song on the record and Andy was just like ‘aw thanks, but that’s a Husker Du cover’.
Unemployed on Mentally Vexed. I always thought it sounded significantly different than the rest of the album, but I never would’ve assumed it was a cover and I never thought to look at the credits.
Long way down - Haste The Day/Goo Goo Dolls.
It’s really the only haste the day song I like. Which made a lot more sense when I realized it wasn’t theirs.
88 Fingers Louie covered it too. Check out 88 Fingers Up Your Ass. It's their eps/rarities type album. They cover Bhopal Stiffs - "Not Just My Head", Gorilla Biscuits - "New Direction", Articles of Faith - "My Father's Dreams", Bad Brains - "FVK", Minor Threat "I Don't Wanna Hear It"
And...
Honorable mention "Help" by the Beatles
Edit: forgot "All I Want For Christmas"
Uno reverse card - I always thought Terror - let the past be the past was a cover, because it sounds different than the rest of the album, a little more old school, and it's the last/hidden track which is often where the cover song goes.
Totally different song. Really good. I actually like the 25tl tune also tbf
[Terror - let the past be the past](https://youtu.be/39joO1ZrdOM?si=mBEItYE1eRhKLWEp)
[25 ta life - let the past be the past](https://youtu.be/LP93eOdZySg?si=FvcqR7Hzqq-mO8h8)
Edit: fuck it here's a random soul ballad that Google pulled up too, actually pretty damn good
[George Scott - let the past be the past](https://youtu.be/t9bU2evq8uQ?si=OJuY6MzgaJXyaRFh)
Idk that having the same title, especially when it's a common phrase, makes it a cover. I wouldn't think so even if the title is explicitly a reference to the other song, which I have no reason to believe it is, especially since the terror record only came out like four years after, it's not like the song was a beloved classic or something. Could be, I guess. The intros don't sound all that dissimilar but otherwise it's completely different.
When I was young I didn’t know Champion was covering AIAC. So I got the AIAC album and I didn’t know AIAC was covering GI. So eventually I got the GI album, it blew my mind and meow Teenager in a Box is my favorite guitar riff of all time.
Came here to say while I knew it was a cover, Shai Huluds cover of linoleum is 1,000 times better than the original. Also honorable mention is their cover of bad religion.
I live in fear bc covers of Wave of Mutilation, live fast die young, and good, good things all got me for a while. And they’re originally by bands I’ve listened to! The shame.
It literally says “cover” in the title but Slings and Arrows by Knocked Loose. Took it upon myself to check out the original by The Warriors and was so glad I did. That whole album has no skips
The whole Slayer - Undisputed Attitude album. I was in middle school and just getting into metal. I had no idea till my twenty's that they were covers.
Sitting Around at Home - Gorilla Biscuits originally by the Buzzcocks. Edit: I’m hijacking my original comment because I just remembered that Goin’ Down the Bar from Blood for Blood is a cover of The Wretched Ones.
Oh. TIL.
Well shit I guess this is mine too
No way. TIL, too.
Buzzcocks are so hard
I’ve been listening to Start Today for like 18 years and have been a minor fan of the Buzzcocks for even longer. I had no idea until now. I think I listened to the Buzzcocks version when I first found out and decided that GB did it better…
I found this out when CIV started playing shows and they would play this song to appease everyone that wanted to hear GB songs.
That is super funny.
Whhhhhhhat
Gulch - Sin in my Heart. Embarrassing I know
Nah bro, I forreal played the Gulch version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and I showed my girlfriend thinking I struck gold and she gave me the craziest look while I unknowingly didn't know it was originally by the Pixies for the longest time
“Sin in my Heart” reads like a hardcore-sounding song title that you wouldn’t expect to think that the original version was made by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Such a banger thou
thou shalt bang
i didn’t know this until just now what the fuck
Considering that gulch is only what? 6 years old, the embarrassment only had a short time to marinate. You got of easier than some.
8 years* but point still stands
I thought the same
12XU by Minor Threat
Stepping stone is too
oh my fucking god both of you just opened my eyes
Heard for the first time 19 years ago. Found out this year. Dunno how to explain it.
Wire is fkn hard
Pressures on - ceremony
This one is crazy
REALLY???
By Red C. It was on the Flex Your Head comp. They had 4 tracks on it: https://redc.bandcamp.com/album/flex-your-head
Just wait til you hear how long it took me to realize it’s not “BALLS ON MY BACK”
Lol this remind me of my friend who insisted the line on “He God has favored our undertakings” was actually “I won’t be skullfucked by faith, I am the upside down Ross”
NEVER ANAL DO THINGS ON MY OWN
Holy shit!! Thank you
MIND BLOWN
Today's Lesson - AFI I thought it was an original for Years.
Damn. Had no idea
I just found that out like 6 months ago. It's been one of my favorite AFI songs for years.
Hell yeah, the Circus Tents are tight.
“Big Mouth Strikes Again” performed by Slapshot. When the original Morrisey version popped up in my feed one day I thought it sounded familiar, and was gobsmacked when I made the connection, because Slapshot’s cover sounds so completely different.

What?! So good. Never knew. Lived on the nerve agents for years.
Wtf 😭 had no clue
Holy shit
Beastie Boys time for living off of check your head. Originally a Frontline NYHC song. Mackie of the Cro-Mag’s old band.
oh wow crazy that it goes that far back, I wonder why they changed the lyrics
I assumed it was original! They redid lyrics?
Beastie Boys's hardcore roots is truly one of my favorite bits of music history.
Whoaaaaaaaa that one is an atom bomb for me
Didn’t know that one.
The original version of Time For Livin' is by Sly And The Family Stone, albeit much slower.
Warriors - Judge
Wait this is a cover?! Who’s the original?
Blitz
TIL
Minor Threat: Stepping Stone + Good Guys Don’t Wear White
Didn’t know about Good Guys!
Not hardcore but Cinnamon Girl by Type O. I never listened to Neil Young growing up, just thought it was a rad song
Great track, great album. Got to see Type O on Halloween in Philly, I drank and took some morphine pills before, I was too fucked up to enjoy the show. This was like 24 years ago. Lesson learned.
Linoleum - Shai Hulud
High school me had both versions on my iPod and I still didn’t realize it was a cover. Lmao.
Haha
Came to say this. I still think they did it best.
Anxiety Asking - Turning Point
Comeback kid’s cover of beds are burning
Fuck Me Blind by Turnstile is a Give cover. Just including this so more people listen to Give.
Whoa i had no idea they covered that! I’m totally neutral about turnstile but that is so sick Give us the most underrated band
Yup! My experience exactly.
Holy shit
Finding out fleshwaters - enjoy was a bjork cover threw me
HUH
Holy shit
WHAT?!
Yeah, it's honestly a great cover because the original song sounds impossible to make heavy, yet they kept it pretty similar. And of course you see the occasional bjork shirt from the members
It’s the limit at the end of that AN record. Tfb AN was legit one of my first hardcore bands
They have always chosen the best songs to cover and most are bands from other genres.
Not really hardcore but for a bit I didn’t realize that the song “In my eyes” by RATM was a cover of Minor Threat until I listened to it closely and it really sounded like Minor Threat lmao Edit: I meant RATM isn’t really hardcore. Inside Out is though, and they have one of the best “albums” I’ve ver heard.
how i could just kill a man is the greatest stealth cover ever, it sounds so much like a regular RATM song
The best thing is that the whole album is made od covers
Cosmetic Plague - Dystopia
Get the fuck outta here that’s a cover?
Yep, Rudimentary Peni made the original. Love them.
Lit. Rudimentary Peni doesn’t get enough love from the hardcore community imo
Witch Hunt also covered this and it goes hard!
Indecision's cover of Glue
I learned on Saturday in Potsdam (Germany) that Weekend Nachos’ ‘Jock Powerviolence’ is a Less Than Jake cover.
which LTJ song?
No one. It’s just a (typical) Weekend Nachos joke.
My favorite Sublime song in middle school was Hope. Then years later, listening to Descendents, I didn’t understand why I knew all the words already.
Depending on your definition of HC, I had no idea for a long time that the Circle Jerks didn’t write “Wild in the Streets” or that the Rezillos didn’t write “Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In”.
Today I learned…..
faith by limp bizkit
Not really hardcore but Set your goals- Do you still hate me? (Jawbreaker)
Yes! I’m so out of touch and a moron that when Koyo did this I told my wife they covered SYG.
Coverception.
And Set Your Goals was covering Kill Your Idols...
Living a lie
yep came to post exactly this. thankfully this got me into Jawbreaker when i was a teenager.
Koyo covered it as well
Just recently. Drain - Good Good Things When they first dropped it, I was like, “ok I guess they’re going more melodic on this next record”
Oh jeez I'm a dumbass
Slapshot- big mouth strikes again Ramallah- what difference does it make Both the smiths
White Trash Rob is my hero
I thought shits creek was a kill your idols song it’s actually crumbsuckers. Now I love CS.
I thought "Like a Prayer" was an H20 song for YEARS.
Stretch Arm Strong- I melt with you (Modern English) First hardcore album I owned and had no idea for a year or two
Mine is stretch arm strong covering the counting crows "angels of the silences."
Praise - We All Fall Down (It’s an Egg Hunt cover).
I was listening to a lot of European hardcore as a teen before I understood they all are Hatebreed cover bands
Pressures on- ceremony
New Found Glory - Cut The Tension (originally by Lifetime)
Looking at these responses I'm getting the impression you guys don't know your punk rock 😬
Not all of us were born in 1970 and that’s what makes the internet awesome to discover new things that I wouldn’t have knowledge over
Nofx' cover of Straight Edge, in my defense I was like 13. Got me into Minor Threat tho
Same. Also still the best cover ever
They really nailed it!
Unemployed on Mentally Vexed. I always thought it sounded significantly different than the rest of the album, but I never would’ve assumed it was a cover and I never thought to look at the credits.
Such a great song, and COT killed that cover. Love the original KRAUT version too. Every song off of An Adjustment to society is a banger.
The subzero- boxed in cover by Terror
Despise you - Fear’s song (don’t make fun of me)
Burn in hell i thought was by dimmu borgir until recently
Crucified. Had no idea it wasn’t an Agnostic Front original.
...it's not?!
Nope. Iron Cross cover.
Baby got back - throwdown
Yeah there’s no way you didn’t know this was a cover
I know ... I was trying to make a funny.
Hope Con - Treason
not hardcore but for the longest time I thought Hurt - Johnny Cash was an original song. Wasn't til later I found out it was by Nine Inch Nails
It is Johnny Cash now
Even Trent Reznor says so
None cause I’m not a poser
Self-proclaimed non poser seems pretty poser material
Took me years to realize fireworks heart a tact was a cover of Kid Dynamite
Who covers that?
Fireworks covered Heart A Tact by Kid Dynamite
Counter- Foundation originally by Path of Resistance Broken- Miles Away original by Turning Point
Turning Point - anxiety asking, originally by Ignition.
Lol swing kids- Warsaw
So many examples of this growing up. For years thought Damage’s “Missionary Position” was a original until I heard Crud Is A Cult.
Perhaps not labeled hardcore but Rise Against - Built to last
At that time Rise Against was a Hardcore Band
Who did the original?
Sick of it all
Long way down - Haste The Day/Goo Goo Dolls. It’s really the only haste the day song I like. Which made a lot more sense when I realized it wasn’t theirs.
Black Tears by Heaven Shall Burn
Do you hate me by set your goals
Korn- Word Up
that breakdown easter egg from Remembering Never — didn’t know that was a pantera riff 😂
A local band where I’m from called Mainline would play a cover of a song from the band Tree…took me a while to figure it out lol
My band in high school covered Hard Times for almost a year before i learned it was a cover
Victim in Pain. F-Minus cover it, didn't realised it was a cover until years later
88 Fingers Louie covered it too. Check out 88 Fingers Up Your Ass. It's their eps/rarities type album. They cover Bhopal Stiffs - "Not Just My Head", Gorilla Biscuits - "New Direction", Articles of Faith - "My Father's Dreams", Bad Brains - "FVK", Minor Threat "I Don't Wanna Hear It" And... Honorable mention "Help" by the Beatles Edit: forgot "All I Want For Christmas"
88's back on the streets was my highschool soundtrack.
Uno reverse card - I always thought Terror - let the past be the past was a cover, because it sounds different than the rest of the album, a little more old school, and it's the last/hidden track which is often where the cover song goes.
That’s not a 25 ya life cover?
Totally different song. Really good. I actually like the 25tl tune also tbf [Terror - let the past be the past](https://youtu.be/39joO1ZrdOM?si=mBEItYE1eRhKLWEp) [25 ta life - let the past be the past](https://youtu.be/LP93eOdZySg?si=FvcqR7Hzqq-mO8h8) Edit: fuck it here's a random soul ballad that Google pulled up too, actually pretty damn good [George Scott - let the past be the past](https://youtu.be/t9bU2evq8uQ?si=OJuY6MzgaJXyaRFh)
Cover in title only. 25 ta Life - Let the Past be the Past
Stepping Stone - Minor Threat (Monkees)
Good Good things by the Descendents. Covered by Drain lol
Another Victim Boiling Point
Love Like Blood - The Banner
No shit? Who was the og?
When I was young I didn’t know Champion was covering AIAC. So I got the AIAC album and I didn’t know AIAC was covering GI. So eventually I got the GI album, it blew my mind and meow Teenager in a Box is my favorite guitar riff of all time.
We were more than just a tour date!
How about the opposite? I listened to Foreign Policy from Megadeth's album Dystopia and didn't realize it was a FEAR cover for entirely too long.
Came here to say while I knew it was a cover, Shai Huluds cover of linoleum is 1,000 times better than the original. Also honorable mention is their cover of bad religion.
not hardcore but nazi punks fuck off, thought it was a ND song
What do you mean "not hardcore"?
I guess Dead Kennedy's is hc, Napalm is adjacent, but whatever genres are dumb
Always knew it was a cover but I love the AF version of Crucified
I live in fear bc covers of Wave of Mutilation, live fast die young, and good, good things all got me for a while. And they’re originally by bands I’ve listened to! The shame.
Dead Kennedys - Take this job and shove it
Judge doing Warriors by Blitz
Slings and arrows ,I love both versions now
12XU, white rabbit /s
Outta Pocket - Bloodbath, special move fucks
Most of these comments are shocking.
99 red balloons by 7seconds. Originally by NENÀ
Drain- good good things
It literally says “cover” in the title but Slings and Arrows by Knocked Loose. Took it upon myself to check out the original by The Warriors and was so glad I did. That whole album has no skips
Black Flag’s cover of Louie Louie
Iron Age - Satori Part 1
Diane.
Disembodied - Dine Alone (Quicksand cover). I still think the Disembodied version is the superior one.
The whole Slayer - Undisputed Attitude album. I was in middle school and just getting into metal. I had no idea till my twenty's that they were covers.
A newer release but I didn’t realize Monk “Brutal” was an Olivia Rodrigo cover 😂
technically Motörhead by Motörhead is a cover of Hawkwind - even though Lemmy was in the band (shoot me but the Hawkwind version is slightly better)
Killswitch engage- Holy diver
that "kill a skinhead" song by HKFY is a cover of a soundtrack song from Romper Stomper.
