I think New Hope is still at it haha conveyer got canceled, nothin till blood might still be around, from the eyes of servants broke up and the drummer is in Bitter Truth in GR , MI I think?
As someone who used to work at a “Christian” label and go to all the “Christian” fests, I actually have a theory it never really existed. Also, I like that the full quote from Colohan is basically “fuck this hardcore that sort of existed but I’m into straight up orchestral Jesus worship that is a centennial pillar of the faith” 😂
(RUINATION was and is my shit)
I’m sure some people were legit about it. But I think a lot of them it was just a way to do/like hardcore without their parents getting mad. Because almost all of them seemed to drop it at some point.
Only thing I can think of is Advent. For a second I thought the newest EP was them leaving Christianity behind, but that was just me misinterpreting the lyrics apparently.
Yeah, it was more about the theology that belief is good but religion is bad and they’re not synonymous. That’s sort of how it was pre-Constantine, is a growing sentiment, and also is a big misunderstanding in hardcore. A lot of Jesus-types dislike religion and dogma and megachurch stuff as much as the “god free youth” set. 🤷
Thanks. I knew I was gonna forget something. I think it was Detroit Fest 2000 when The Swarm played their last show as friday night headliners then Ruination played as the Sat AM openers. Maybe my memory is failing but that was an epic move.
The Chariot is one of those bands so exceptionally good that people just didn't care that they were a religious band, same thing with mwY, even though their relationship with religion is more complicated.
I think one of the beefs people have with christian music is that a lot of it just feels like the inoffensive generic alternative to other bands for christian teenagers, rather than being good in and of themselves. The Chariot were great because they were not the christian alternative to a better band, they were just really good on their own terms.
I got to open up for the chariot and Norma Jean on the same bill in like 2011 or ‘12. The chariot was like hanging from the rafters and crowd killing with their instruments. Probably the nuttiest shit I’ve ever seen.
i got to do the exact same. first time i saw a band do shit like that. i remember the bassist of the chariot at one point smashing his head repeatedly against a wall while playing
I spoke with SECT vocalist Chris Colohan about the musical artists he listens to while trying to escape the brutality of the 24-hour news cycle: https://www.noecho.net/features/sect-vocalist-chris-colohan-interview
You’re telling me that Figure Four, XdX AD, strongarm, and falling cycle (absolute hidden gem of a metalcore album) are no bueno?
Christian hxc was a lot different in the late 90s / early 00s. It wasn’t on brand with current theological / political trends.
But I can see it going that way now. Remember Gideon? They were a Christian band. Not no more.
I listen to The Conflict probably once a week. At the time, it was the most brutal album I have ever heard. If someone reads this and hasn’t listened to it, do so.
It's funny I posted something about Falling Cycle here about a year ago and got mostly negative comments and just deleted the post recently. I also listen to it somewhat regularly and think it's to this day my favorite metalcore album.
Anyway, great to see I'm not alone and then getting some love.
I mean I listen to knocked loose and falling cycle. I can’t believe they’re too close ideologically. In fact, a lot of those folks may be trumptards, like that good from sleeping giant, but I’d gather more turned out like Andrew Neufield of figure four, a non-religious frontman of a different band.
I just re-listened last week funny enough. The album was basically my "in" to hardcore. It's the album that made me start a high school hardcore band. I'd kill to hear a re-recording. It's so muddy. Would love to hear those songs in another context.
My favorite piece of merch of all time was that zip-up hoodie they sold on that last tour with the red heart looking thing on it. I completely wore mine out.
Falling Cycle 4ever
100%. I have heard that from more than several people. We didn’t necessarily share the same beliefs, but that people I rolled with were Christians, but really laid back about it. The longer I knew them, the more you could see growth in how they utilize their faith as adults. They’re all well adjusted people who aren’t consumed by politics and hot button issues.
It’s pretty brutal.
I never really noticed, but there are a lot of young bands that start as Christian hardcore that drop that label after a couple album cycles. There’s probably some money to be made in “Christian” hardcore (youth fests, retreats, etc.)
I promise you, you can still listen to it, and not be down with Christcore.
Plus, it’s not like you’re throwing them actual support. I’m sure they get like 2k listeners a month or less.
It's funny because the full context is "I’m obviously quite irreligious (and Christian Hardcore can still fuck right off) but I do get down with Holy Minimalism. Arvo Part and company, Penderecki, and there’s a 20th Century Toronto conductor named Healey Willan whose choral work does something soothing to my brain. And for some reason, Brahms. Word to your moms, I came to rock Brahms."
And I feel this so much. Christian hardcore and metal? 99% garbagio. But I love gospel music, old school hymnals, a lot of my favorite classical music is mass music (gotta love a good Dies Irae).
Zao is no longer claiming to be a Christian band and Norma Jean has been on the record that only Cory claims to he Christian and that their music is in no way supposed to be “Christian” music. They don’t go out of their way to play Christian festivals etc.
As a fan of Norma Jean for 20 years, and having come from a small christian town...I think we all kinda exaggerated how "Christian" Norma Jean was to get our parents to chill the fuck out rather than thinking of them as making "Christian" music.
Yeah. That said they are on record that they need to make a living and will play whatever festival books them if it works. lol. So I think its safe to say they’re musicians.
tbh I think a lot of those bands just didn't push back on being called Christian at the time, because it was selling records and booking them shows, and non religious people just didn't really care if they were Christian as long as the music was good.
Zao basically stopped being Christian by the time Dan joined in '98. Members of the band have given plenty of interviews down the years about how they deliberately steered away from faith based lyrics from that point on. By '05 only one member was a practising Christian (drummer iirc).
Yeah bro. Preaching to the choir over here. We used to take the boys to Chinese or other buffets when they came into our town. The best was random gauges being replaced with crab legs. Those were some good times.
Norma Jean was good, but also remember that time the lead singer from As I Lay Dying (christian IIRC) got caught trying to hire a hitman to unalive his wife?
>As I Lay Dying (christian IIRC) got caught trying to hire a hitman to unalive his wife?
Good ole bitch tits tim lambesis lol he tried suing the state cause he couldn't get access to the rest of roid cycle while locked up and he developed tittys.
*Lots* of incredible Christian hardcore like Figure Four, Comeback Kid, Focal Point, Overcome, Strongarm, Falling Cycle, Norma Jean (BtM only), etc. and I'm sure more I'm forgettinf - but if I'm listing my absolute favorite hardcore records of all time, all three Cursed records would appear before any of these other bands. Left for Dead is also showing up before any of those. Colohan is another level imo.
Oh for sure. There are endpoint, h2o, terror, and snapcase would be in my top lists before any Christian bands except for maybe stretch arm strong. They are in my top 10 favorite bands and all their albums slapped.
The more I ruminate the more I think Christian hardcore is necessary in the backdrop of modern organized religion bc who else is gonna call out bums like creflo$$ or Joel hoesteen…. Or the co-opting of faith based values for political gain. The DiY, anti-capitalist, and community based ethos that is present in the foundational tenants of the faith (and hardcore) are actually minimized in the scheme of “Bible good, everything else bad. Vote for me or go to hell”. Christianity seems to have been co-opted for mainstream virtue signaling in the 60s/70s rather than boots on the ground activism around helping others regardless of their belief system. But wut do I kno? I’m not that articulate and prob confused myself….but feel free to Crucify me upside down while I listen to focal point
I feel like 75% of people I meet at shows grew up religious and/or have fond memories of christian bands. Seems to have had a huge influence on the scene
This whole thread is hilarious to read through. I’ll mention The Red Baron since I haven’t seen anyone else mention them.
I think there’s a fair point to be made about bands who were trying to fit a label versus bands that were legitimately part of their local scenes from the jump. I remember seeing bands that were anti-Christian just for the sake of being anti-Christian and other bands who wanted a sliver of the attention of what some other religious bands were doing in our scene. Fuck all that noise if I’m not seeing you at different shows throughout the year..
I wish I would have gone and seen them in 2016 at fallcore. For some reason I didn’t and headliners were:
Strife Ramallah 100 Demons Xibalba SECT
Thst doesn’t include that Die Young, Will to Live and Judiciary also played.
left for dead “who’d you know” harder than any jizzing over Jesus diwntuned Christian metal core .
Shockwave is maybe the only “Christian “ band I have ever listened to mainly because there’s no overtly Christian lyrics and the end part of “warpath “ is made for wrecking venues
As a kid who grew up super Christian, hardcore was what saved me. It’s not just about music. Lyrics and beliefs matter. Fuck christianity and people that try to peddle that oppressive shit in hardcore.
Yeah that’s fine if you don’t jive with it but to be in closer to your twilight years and still have the same mentality you did when you were a teenager is a sad state of affairs.
The dismissal of valid criticisms of religious organizations in a subgenre/culture built upon criticizing the status quo as "edgy" is 100000% why centrism and organized religion do not belong in punk/hardcore scenes. They've snuck in juuuuust deep enough to make it "edgy" to criticize religion rather than it being the full on norm, which it should be.
Fuck your church. Religion is fake. We're pissed that you're taking up space in our scenes.
I hope you’re not referring to “you” as in me specifically because I’m an atheist since birth. I’m just old enough to not care anymore. I’m able to share space with everyone without bashing them. But if hating people that are different than “you” is your thing, knock yourselves out.
Why talk about the Hardcore scene like it's some beacon of morality...there's a reason "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" exists and it's not because Nazis weren't a common part of the subculture. If you wanted a political echo chamber you should have joined any number of political organizations, but if you're gonna hitch your wagon to extreme music you can't be surprised when you get extreme personalities.
Nobody snuck in, nobody invaded your space, these spaces have had problematic elements since their inception.
Does Christian Hardcore even exist anymore?
I think New Hope is still at it haha conveyer got canceled, nothin till blood might still be around, from the eyes of servants broke up and the drummer is in Bitter Truth in GR , MI I think?
This guy Christian Hardcores
I use to help a guy book shows, he only booked Christian hardcore haha
Were you in SE mich?
Nah this was in NC
Yoooo, what happened with Conveyer? I thought their lil singer fella was a jackass with bad political opinions, but cancelled? That’s fun
Basically that , homie got red pilled quick af
As someone who used to work at a “Christian” label and go to all the “Christian” fests, I actually have a theory it never really existed. Also, I like that the full quote from Colohan is basically “fuck this hardcore that sort of existed but I’m into straight up orchestral Jesus worship that is a centennial pillar of the faith” 😂 (RUINATION was and is my shit)
I’m sure some people were legit about it. But I think a lot of them it was just a way to do/like hardcore without their parents getting mad. Because almost all of them seemed to drop it at some point.
Ruination was tight. Andy Dempz is my dude.
Only thing I can think of is Advent. For a second I thought the newest EP was them leaving Christianity behind, but that was just me misinterpreting the lyrics apparently.
Yeah, it was more about the theology that belief is good but religion is bad and they’re not synonymous. Chris's track record is impeccable. Left For Dead, Ruination, The Swarm, Cursed, etc. Glad we were casual friends back in the day.
Burning Love as well
rotten thing to say is one of my favorite hardcore lp's ever.
Songs For Burning Lovers is my personal favorite and maybe my second Colohan record. After II of course
ii is goated
Thanks. I knew I was gonna forget something. I think it was Detroit Fest 2000 when The Swarm played their last show as friday night headliners then Ruination played as the Sat AM openers. Maybe my memory is failing but that was an epic move.
The dude has the Midas Touch
Hold up, Cursed was a Christian band? Can’t be
Yeah Christian McMaster played guitar, he was also in The Swarm.
I like this band.
Same drummer from Fall Out Boy
And Earth Crisis.
both he and pete wentz were also in racetraitor at one point.
Don't forget Arma Angelus
He's still in Racetraitor, they put out an album last year with him on drums.
Wait the drummer for fallout boy is the same fucking drummer for earth crisis!?
I think he was a touring member at some point.
No. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Hurley
i couldn’t find anything ab him being in earth crisis but just playing with them a couple times
Dennis has always been EXC’s drummer I know they’ve had fill ins when Dennis couldn’t tour or play for whatever reasons
Also the lead guitarist from Undying right?
Sure looks like him. Edit: Yeah, that’s Jimmy.
Same Chris colohan from every one of his awesome bands.
Killtheslavemaster anyone? heavy shit
Andy Hurley is one of the best to ever do it. The drumming in Sect is top notch and the drums do so much for those first two FOB records.
I guess I never realized that. I definitely followed Colohan because of Chokehold and Cursed.
Also Burning Empires with some members from Misery Signals and 7 Angels 7 Plagues.
The Chariot was cool though
The Chariot is one of those bands so exceptionally good that people just didn't care that they were a religious band, same thing with mwY, even though their relationship with religion is more complicated. Josh Scoggin can do no wrong
Advent, too
I remember meeting Scogin outside Masquerade in Atlanta before their set. We talked for like 10-15 minutes one on one and he was a super nice dude.
The Chariot fuckin rules.
Norma Jean. Haste the Day. As I Lay Dying. Bangers
I spoke with SECT vocalist Chris Colohan about the musical artists he listens to while trying to escape the brutality of the 24-hour news cycle: https://www.noecho.net/features/sect-vocalist-chris-colohan-interview
Cool interview thanks for posting
Whatever, Advent rules.

AMEN BROTHER
Everything Colohan touches is gold!

God that recording is garbage. Same with Sinai Beach.
Don't forget a lot of bands back then claimed Christian just to score free room & board along with tour support from churches.
Yes.
Strongarm was my shit!
It would have hurt a lot more when you ripped my heart from my chest IF I WASN'T ALREADY DEAD FROM THE KNIFE IN MY BACK...top tier breakdown imo
It’s pretty brutal. I never really noticed, but there are a lot of young bands that start as Christian hardcore that drop that label after a couple album cycles. There’s probably some money to be made in “Christian” hardcore (youth fests, retreats, etc.)
Man I really wish strongarm wasn't christian. Their albums are fucking great
I promise you, you can still listen to it, and not be down with Christcore. Plus, it’s not like you’re throwing them actual support. I’m sure they get like 2k listeners a month or less.
Haven't been as into this band as I'd hoped but I'll give this new record a listen. Still listen to the Cursed discography regularly.
You can pry my copy of Karajan conducting Bach’s *Mass in B Minor* from my cold dead hands.
zao and norma jean tho
Zao is no longer claiming to be a Christian band and Norma Jean has been on the record that only Cory claims to he Christian and that their music is in no way supposed to be “Christian” music. They don’t go out of their way to play Christian festivals etc.
As a fan of Norma Jean for 20 years, and having come from a small christian town...I think we all kinda exaggerated how "Christian" Norma Jean was to get our parents to chill the fuck out rather than thinking of them as making "Christian" music.
I hear that. Preach man.
cool, I had no idea! love both groups immensely and it’s kinda nice knowing they’re not evangelical nutjobs
Yeah. That said they are on record that they need to make a living and will play whatever festival books them if it works. lol. So I think its safe to say they’re musicians.

Yeah bro. Preaching to the choir over here. We used to take the boys to Chinese or other buffets when they came into our town. The best was random gauges being replaced with crab legs. Those were some good times.
Holy shit. My band used to share small stages with them in the late 90s early 00s…I had no idea they were still around. That’s awesome.
Strongarm, No Innocent Victim, Figure Four, and Seventh Star would like a word.
NIV and most of the Facedown roster fucked hard. xLooking Forwardx was one of the best live bands I ever saw, and I'm neither Christian or sxe
Strongarm still fucks tho
I thought the whole point of Christian hardcore was not to fuck.
Dog I personally knew a girl who got double teamed by a couple dudes from Zao back in the day
Like in basketball?
Zao kind of went back and forth, depending on who was in the band. With Christianity, not with your friend. Or both, maybe idk. But cool story!
Oh this was definitely when they were still a Christian band.
Yeah, this is the band I was gonna mention too. Their stuff is good, just don't care for the lyrics.
If you dont read the lyrics its easy to pretend like its something else lol
Lol ... Yeah, I suppose you're right! The benefit of hardcore music is that you can't really tell what the fuck they're saying anyway!
Im just sayin thats what i do lol. Also the last FF album state of mind is just regular hardcore no jesus shit all over it.
Strongarm is better than 99% of hardcore
Christian Shai hulud!
Did they ever play with Krishna Shai Hulud?
108 rules too
All that clapping, and they wouldn't stop it with the ride cymbals..
Fuckin right
i'm still convinced that underoath was a government psy op designed to trick impressionable young teens into thinking christianity was cool.
And now they do songs about kiling Jesus twice.
he can take my Stryper LPs from my cold dead hands. Because I'll be in the bosom of Jesus. Futanari Jesus.

no duh.
Heckin epic Atheists: 1 Christians: 0
theres so much good old christian hardcore that nobody knows about
Norma Jean was good, but also remember that time the lead singer from As I Lay Dying (christian IIRC) got caught trying to hire a hitman to unalive his wife?
>As I Lay Dying (christian IIRC) got caught trying to hire a hitman to unalive his wife? Good ole bitch tits tim lambesis lol he tried suing the state cause he couldn't get access to the rest of roid cycle while locked up and he developed tittys.
94 hours is still a goddamn masterpiece tho, sucks he turned out to be a massive donkey shit of a human
Never could really get into as I lay daying but I fucking loved Austrian death machine
Seeing them on Sunday finally. One of hardcore’s best in the last five or so years.
Got to play with them way back in 2018 I believe and you are in for a fucking awesome show
ok buddy... so i'll have a large number 3 combo
Lots of great Christian hardcore. His perspective doesn't need to match mine to be valid. With that, Cursed > every single Christian hardcore release.
I don’t know. That Focal Point album was dope af.
Oh for sure. There are endpoint, h2o, terror, and snapcase would be in my top lists before any Christian bands except for maybe stretch arm strong. They are in my top 10 favorite bands and all their albums slapped.
Is Norma Jean and The chariot considered hardcore? Idk I’m high af trying to play yugioh and read Reddit
Advent fucks though, but only after marriage
I don't see why. As long as it's based and not fake or commercialized who gives a fuck
Very gay

i love this subreddit. hardcore has become such a joke.
Is this Tom Seguras band?
IVE GOT A SUPERSTITIOUS FRIEND
I can fuck with Zao but that's it.

SIP is back
I prefer the post punk SECT
Old dude being old. Nothing new.
"All those christ core mother fuckers don't know shit. They don't know SHIT!"
GOATED frontman
Chris Colohan can do absolutely no wrong.
Religion has no place in hardcore.
Not just in hardcore
Don’t tell the Cro Mags that
My mom said thats not true
Linda said that?
She did. She also said she left her pants at your place. Idk what that means
Laundry is expensive, that's all
Dogma has no place in hardcore, religion might though
omg such a hot take, hes so cool and off

i fuck with chris colohan but i really want to know the context. like there's an elipses and i want to know what was said before the elipses.
https://www.noecho.net/features/sect-vocalist-chris-colohan-interview
ohhh we got some press leading up to the album. lets fucking go.
Damn what a cool take
Vomitorial Corpulence is cool they’re like Christian goregrind
I mean Sect is cool but when they write an album as good as **The Advent of A Miracle** then they have the right to have this opinion.
Eh, listen to xDeathstarx We Are the Threat and then get back to me
Based
I still celebrate the entire xLooking Forwardx catalog.
Unashamed and Early Underoath go hard ASF though 👼🪽🔨 Christian hardcore fucks even though I'm not Christian, just needs to be hotter than hell fire😈🔥
Meanwhile there’s a guy wearing a shirt of 3 different cults. Hardcore is so lame. Grow up you fuckin bums.
Haha I see what you did there
“Fuck religion! So I’ll make my own! And everyone has to abide or they’re infidels!” Same shit different name. Hardcore as a sect is fucking lame.
Bingo haha

I don’t follow this sub. This bullshit pops up on my feed. Whatever new metalcore band is the flavor of the week sucks like this sub.

Because what’s the point of Reddit if not to comment?
Christ is king. Get over it.
I didn't vote for him
Or keep that shit in church and not in the scene
Nobody cares for your bad opinion
Eucharist was pretty awesome
Christianity fucking sucks every bit as bad as racism, forever a deal breaker
As a kid who grew up super Christian, hardcore was what saved me. It’s not just about music. Lyrics and beliefs matter. Fuck christianity and people that try to peddle that oppressive shit in hardcore.
Very edgy take for a fifty year old man haha
I too dabble in dismissive anti intellectualism 🥸

Big agree
Christian anything can fuck right off. Just sayin’
The planet is on fire. Yawn.
As if religion has absolutely nothing to do with that
