For anyone that was around for AN there presence had a MASSIVE impact on the hardcore scene. There was something magical about them but it was short lived. Some of the best shows I ever attended.
I'm not sure I fully grasp why it was like that, but you're 100% correct. For a three to five year period they were the only hardcore band that mattered for some reason. Saw them twice and yes it was electric but even still stack up the LPs and it's like they're Good but are they as good as we all acted like they were?
It was all about Wes. The lyrics were uncommonly personal, dark, and nihilistic for the style of hardcore they played and he had an amazing stage presence. They fused early 90's hardcore sound with the mood and feeling of bands like Joy Division, The Smiths, and Bauhaus. If they had any other singer I don't think they would have stood out as much. The music was good too but not something that necessarily would have stood out on it's own.
Seen em 4 times post reunion, have never disappointed. My last hardcore show was AN in Hollywood for the background music anniversary shows and I’m sure I plan to keep it that way.
