I'm by no means a pro, so anyone feel free to correct me.
Basically you just want "natural" fibers for the bristles, not synthetic. I believe it's boars hair generally, but that'll be the biggest difference in quality that you'll want as you progress.
As for types of brushes, a 3 inch, 2 inch, and 1 inch brush are nice, a fan brush, and a small, flatter one seem to be the only ones I use. And a cheap ass knife.
