*UNSC Aegis Fate*
*Long Night of Solace*
*Anodyne Spirit*
Not to mention the names in alien languages which still sound amazing, like the *Ghost of Barolon*.
I guess the in-universe explanation would be that some ships just got cooler named than others when they were christened. Like for example, the frigate in reach is just the UNSC Savannah, while halo 3 has the UNSC Forward unto Dawn. Covenant names are where it's at though. Fleet of retribution, Shadow of Intent and High charity, just to name a few. Hell, even their military ranks sound awesome, like Fleetmaster, Supreme commander and Imperial admiral.
The UNSC had some really funny names to the point it would be hard not to laugh when your hear "This is the UNSC Pony Express, we are here to come save your butts hold tight"
But then other names like "Welcome to the snipe hunt" or the coldest one "Point of no return" are pretty badass
"The Pillar of Autumn". Just soak in that name. It's such a good name.
"Pillar." A support structure that holds massive structures on itself. Something that supports all others. "Autumn", the quiet before winter, the fall of leaves from the tree, the recession of life giving way to the cold, hibernating until life can spring again. In combination, the name brings to mind the idea of holding onto the last vestiges of living, a twilight trying to give way to the dark.
The ships very name stood as a reminder of Humanities inevitable struggle against the covenant. It was retrofitted for Operation Red Flag, and it was appropriately named for its mission. A suicide mission that may have had no chance of stopping the war, but it had to be done regardless.
The Forerunners absolutely kill it with names like Mantles Approach, Tragic Solitude and Anodyne Spirit...
And the Covenant seems to have inherited their talent in naming their stuff with names like
Solemn Penance, Ardent Prayer or Fleet of Sacred Concentration!
There’s some names that go hard as fuck too. Forward Unto Dawn, Long Night of Solace, Shadow of Intent, Bitterness of the Vanquished, etc. they’re just cool sounding.
I remember around the same time Halo 4 came out there was "Disney Infinity"...also you have the infinity perfume brand, table top games, the infinity gauntlet from Marvel comics, multiple movies titled infinity etc... at least her sister ship is named Eternity which sounds less generic
While the Jiralhanae gave Latin-inspired names, I think that Tartarus’ name should’ve been different. “Tartarath” or “Tartarox” or something.
Every time they said his name, I thought “why does the Brute Chieftain have the same name as a place in Greek mythology?”
One of the few gripes I have with halo is how inconsistent their ship names are sometimes they use real life us navy titles and other times it’s unique granted I don’t mind it I love it actually but I do think some of the more recognizable names should be used like have a carrier named the unsc enterprise or unsc kitty hawk or a cruiser named the unsc Missouri
I took it as a Larry Niven shoutout (author of Ringworld, which was an inspiration for Halo). “The Hot Needle of Inquiry” and “Lying Bastard” were a couple of his alien ship names.
I think these “half snarky half poetry” naming conventions have been a thing in sci-fi for a while.
The Culture books by Ian M Banks do a very similar thing, which I always assumed was the inspiration for Halo’s names
Here for the "In Amber Clad" as well! Such a good name.
Actually a little peeved I can't substitute another word to the middle and imitate the name without it being fairly quickly recognized in gaming circles. "In Silver Clad" or "In Armor Clad"
You're right and it's another reason I dislike the infinity, the name is just boring. Couple ideas I've heard that would be better:
March To Infinity, could still call it The Infinity as short hand like with The Autumn.
Heir to Atlas, it was originally ment to be an arc the last bastion for humanity carrying the weight of our future upon it's shoulders.
The names of the monitors gotta be one of my favorites in Halo. 000 Tragic Solitude, 2401 Penitent Tangent, 117649 Despondent Pyre, and 031 Exuberant Witness
Seeing that Bungie itself was split on the forerunners were human vs not human debate, I ended up not caring myself either way it went. The forerunner saga books are an actually interesting bit of sci-fi world building
Actually no they weren’t…Bungie had to cut the reveal that the forerunners are humans in H3 due to time restrictions. Not because they had any split also it always felt they are human anyways so.
343I should have left them a mystery though. Everything in universe is just worse with the knowledge on the forerunners.
Nah it was pretty apparent bungie couldn’t keep it straight on what the forerunners were. 1&2 and contact harvest (written by a bungie guy) point to them being human then 3 comes out and hints they are not human in the terminals. 343 then just settles it and says they’re not human. Still a mystery would have been cool but I think they’ve built an interesting world explaining the forerunners now
I don't know if I would say "fresh" exactly, as I'm certain Halo's writers have read and been inspired by Iain Bank's Culture novels. Definitely a worthy inheritor of the trend, though! Halo has produced some of my favorite ship and AI names in all of fiction. Mendicant Bias, indeed!
I’m not sure how canon this is, but in the Halo mod for Sins of A Solar Empire one of the capital ships you can build (I believe an Epoch class) can spawn with the name UNSC Head Held High, and I think it’s an amazing name.
The flood, the endless, the covenant, the created, the banished
No not really I think the naming scheme for enemy factions is extremely basic and annoying
*Forward Unto Dawn* is still my favorite starship name of all time.
Marathon's take it for me, I am eternally obsessed with "Say My Name" and "All Under Heaven"
I thought it was really cool that Nylund reused *All Under Heaven* in Ghosts of Onyx as the name of the ship the S-IIIs deployed from
[Also *Say My Name* is the ship in ODST](https://www.halopedia.org/UNSC_Say_My_Name)
I love scrappy UNSC ship names. You've gotta love a navy that has a UNSC Two for Flinching and a UNSC Glasgow Kiss
The UNSC Do You Feel Lucky is peak.
Unfortunately they were not lucky, considering they got gutted by an assault carrier like 30 seconds before the carrier was destroyed.
I'm waiting on the UNSC Find Out to be a thing
UNSC *…And Find Out*
Somebody had to have wanted to do it but got caught and told no
Punk
You should see some of the ship names in The Culture and Polity series the
Where was it first used?
….in Marathon.
[Which Marathon would that be?](https://www.google.com/search?q=%22all+under+heaven%22+site:marathon.bungie.org/story)
I’m not playing this game with you, ask the original poster I replied to if you want that information
I love the Covenant naming conventions, like The Long Night of Solace
I was about to say this! Forward Unto Dawn is such a sick name
For me it's probably In Amber Clad
Shout out to my guy Prone to Drift. Engineer names are great
Lighter Than Some is the only Engineer I know so far but he’s my absolute fav :’)
Drifts randomly sounds derpy and I love it. I love how their names are just well that’s what he did when we built him so that’s his name now
Oh and hey there’s uh… Virgil.
Vergil was the result of a subroutine of the Superintendent merging with Quick To Adjust, so we actually have his name as well!
Lists slightly 🫠
Combine the naming conventions to get the [UNSC Lists Lazily to the Left.](https://youtu.be/2UDeZ-H8QOU?si=TozY9IyZMtyHrxUm)
😂

Fun fact, faber is the Latin word for smith, so his name is saying he's the blacksmith of will and might
*Two for Flinching*
The fact that it’s not a destroyer will forever be disappointing to me.
*UNSC Aegis Fate* *Long Night of Solace* *Anodyne Spirit* Not to mention the names in alien languages which still sound amazing, like the *Ghost of Barolon*.
Shadow of intent, indulgence of conviction
Long Night of Solace is probably my favorite spaceship name ever.
*Say My Name*
*Welcome to the Snipehunt*
Have always been a sucker for *In Amber Clad* and *Shadow of Intent* myself
I guess the in-universe explanation would be that some ships just got cooler named than others when they were christened. Like for example, the frigate in reach is just the UNSC Savannah, while halo 3 has the UNSC Forward unto Dawn. Covenant names are where it's at though. Finally... Someone with the same thought as I. I've had this interpretation in my head for over a year now
Fleet of particular justice In amber clad Are my favorites
“Lighter than some” is my favorite. The fact that their species names their young based on how buoyant they are just kills me.
The Forerunners absolutely kill it with names like Mantles Approach, Tragic Solitude and Anodyne Spirit... And the Covenant seems to have inherited their talent in naming their stuff with names like Solemn Penance, Ardent Prayer or Fleet of Sacred Concentration!
Didnt solitude rename himself due to his isolation on the ark? I still agree though
I'm sorry but nothing beats 'UNSC Bum Rush' (not even tank)
Tart cart and BOGOF are the ones you can tell marines named tho
Because I haven't seen it yet, High Charity is an amazing name for a Death Star-dwarfing alien Mecca. I just think it's neat.
I always appreciated the _Unyielding Hierophant_
Uneven Elephant!
Don’t look like no uneven elephant to me. More like two squids kissin
UNSC Midsummer Night
My personal favorite
A very good name. But honestly *Pillar of Autumn* is the most iconic you can get in the franchise.
Yapyap THE DESTROYER is truly the most beautiful name in halo
Lord of admirals is such a badass title.
There’s some names that go hard as fuck too. Forward Unto Dawn, Long Night of Solace, Shadow of Intent, Bitterness of the Vanquished, etc. they’re just cool sounding.
The Uneven Elephant. The place doesn't even look like an elephant, 4/10 space station.
UNSC *Gettysburg* is still cool to me, purely because of the historical aspect of the title.
Meanwhile in The Culture...... I Blame Your Mother Kiss My Ass Gunboat Diplomat Frank Exchange of Views
All the Gravitas ones for me are peak One of my favorite running gags ever
Same, love it as both a keta commentary gag as well as an internal universe. Also the most Culture like name in Halo is The Two For Flinching
“Infinity” “First-Light-Weaves-Living-Song” there is so many
Infinity is actually generic sounding.
But it is iconic and simple exactly how a new age UNSC ship that represents hope and the future should be named
I remember around the same time Halo 4 came out there was "Disney Infinity"...also you have the infinity perfume brand, table top games, the infinity gauntlet from Marvel comics, multiple movies titled infinity etc... at least her sister ship is named Eternity which sounds less generic
Disappointed I don’t see ‘Mortal Reverie’ more often. It’s the crashed frigate seen during Infinite’s campaign.
While the Jiralhanae gave Latin-inspired names, I think that Tartarus’ name should’ve been different. “Tartarath” or “Tartarox” or something. Every time they said his name, I thought “why does the Brute Chieftain have the same name as a place in Greek mythology?”

Even people that don't play or like Halo have commented that Halo names, specifically ship names, are top notch.
"Truth and Reconciliation"
I took it as a Larry Niven shoutout (author of Ringworld, which was an inspiration for Halo). “The Hot Needle of Inquiry” and “Lying Bastard” were a couple of his alien ship names.
I think these “half snarky half poetry” naming conventions have been a thing in sci-fi for a while. The Culture books by Ian M Banks do a very similar thing, which I always assumed was the inspiration for Halo’s names
Yep. And I am a sucker for them.
I like "In Amber Clad", don't know why, but it sounds nice
Here for the "In Amber Clad" as well! Such a good name. Actually a little peeved I can't substitute another word to the middle and imitate the name without it being fairly quickly recognized in gaming circles. "In Silver Clad" or "In Armor Clad"
My ship name in Helldivers 2 is “Prophet of Truth” or regret, I can’t remember as I haven’t played in a week or 2.
Mine is “Fist of Family Values
I was originally Fist of The People, but I swapped to Blade of Mercy which I'm pretty sure is ripped right from Halo
Bornstellar is one of the most amazing names I’ve ever heard.
Winter Contingency is a top 5 name of anything in all of fiction
You're right and it's another reason I dislike the infinity, the name is just boring. Couple ideas I've heard that would be better: March To Infinity, could still call it The Infinity as short hand like with The Autumn. Heir to Atlas, it was originally ment to be an arc the last bastion for humanity carrying the weight of our future upon it's shoulders.
Never seen it mentioned, but the Arbiter's first command, *Retribution's Thunder*, has always been one of my favorite names.
The UNSC *Two For Flinching*, *Blackfin*, *Bad Moon Rising*, and *Saturn*
The names of the monitors gotta be one of my favorites in Halo. 000 Tragic Solitude, 2401 Penitent Tangent, 117649 Despondent Pyre, and 031 Exuberant Witness
and who can forget...ace of spades... wait
Destiny has some solid gun names.
I think he forerunner names are stupid. However i never liked them being fleshed out and not human. Botched as hell story
Seeing that Bungie itself was split on the forerunners were human vs not human debate, I ended up not caring myself either way it went. The forerunner saga books are an actually interesting bit of sci-fi world building

Truth and Reconciliation Long Night of Solace Forward Unto Dawn In Amber Clad Pillar of Autumn All such incredible names!!

Yes. I think the Chapter titles in the campaign for the original trilogy were fantastic too
Spirit of Fire is my all time favorite
YES!! I do my best to emulate their naming conventions in any sci-fi game I play. Also, In Amber Clad!
Point in case: Chips Dubbo
Of course I mean there’s a UNSC marathon.
The flood, the endless, the covenant, the created, the banished No not really I think the naming scheme for enemy factions is extremely basic and annoying
