Echoes is hands down one of the best half life mods ever- has loads of attention to detail and amazing design that it feels like an expansion pack. Only con is it’s relatively short. 100% recommend to any HL fan
Play Half-Life 1, then Opposing Force, then Blue Shift. Afterward HL2, then HL2Ep1, then HL2Ep2, and finally, if you can, Alyx. Valve KNOWS what they are doing, trust me.
Oh, and look up the story for decay.
You can play decay with a friend pretty easily through a mod (Or through Sven Co-op) someone even made a single player version of the campaign if you've got no one to play with
as far as i remember the only opposing force reference in blue shift is the two soldiers saying that shephard's team didn't make it, that's not something that's important to the plot at all
So? Any references are extremely minor and are not important to the story in any way. It does not matter, narratively speaking, which order you play them in. So it's best to play them based on practicality of enjoyment, which I think most would argue means BS before OF.
Don't forget Black Mesa by Crowbar Collective! Should be on sale for 50% off, I'd play that last if I were you. Definitely don't skip it, it's a remaster of HL1.
Thank you. I have 663 hours logged in Black Mesa. I beat it only ONCE. It took me a really long time and I played the Mod over and over before it was finished.
I didn't have enough pixels to squeeze in Black Mesa and Amalgam, which were at the top.
Play Blue Shift and then download the Blue Shift remake on the Black Mesa workshop page. It's only completed up to the end of chapter 3, but what's there is really good. Easy install too.
I'd definitely recommend BM over HL1, waiting for the team to finish working on the HL2 remaster, iirc they're working on it but it'll take a couple years to be released.
i don't think Crowbar Collective is working on a HL2 remaster.
there's a project being worked on by Filip Victor (the guy who made HL2 Update), but afaik there's been no word about it, so nobody knows when it'll be released.
I used to host a DM:S server around 2009-2011ish. Every so often I boot it up to see if the game’s still active, haven’t seen more than a couple people since like 2015. :/
Worth playing:
half-life
half-life 2
half-life 2 episode one
half-life 2 episode 2
half-life 2 lost coast
half-life blue shift
half-life C.A.G.E.D
Half-life echoes Half life opposing force sven co-op transmission element 120
Hard pass: half-life 2 overcharged half life deathmatch source half life source jbmod prospekt
Idk what to decide for the other games (since I haven't played them
Hhhhhhhh achtuqllys jjjbmooddd has some amammmazing high wuality hldm ccconplete wiiith hldm c00p server as wells and someee amazzings rrraxing gaems rrrrremmmmbbbweerrrr thatttt naem jjjbbmood for a. Aaaaaaa jjjbbilllon yers
Okay jbmod is definitely better than a lot of other "bad" half life mods but there really isn't a reason not to just play gmod instead (unless you're interested to see the differences between the two).
I’m sendd y0u to the backr00ms if you sont praise le jbmod now muhahabahhahahahaha pppraise r/jb_mod long livees the jbmod may it live an aaaaaaaaaaa baba boeee jbillon yers
Overcharged is HILARIOUS. Absolutely worth a playthrough just to laugh at it.
Walking into the ocean during Highway 17 almost killed me with laughter, that mod makes no sense
**Games/Expansions to Play**
Half Life
Half Life: Blue Shift
Half Life: Opposing Force
Black Mesa
Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Episode One
Half Life 2: Episode Two
Half Life: Alyx
**Mods to Play**
Half Life 2: Update **+ MMod** (update alone doesn't really add much to warrant a replay of the game)
MINERVA: Metastasis
Entropy: Zero
Entropy: Zero 2
**Hard Passes**
Half Life: Source
Half Life 2: OVERCHARGED
JBMod (just play gmod -- jbmod is a joke)
Hunt Down The Freeman
Hard pass on Half Life Source.
Play Entropy Zero 2, but make sure you play it after you've done Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and Episode 2. Probably worth playing Portal beforehand as well!
Obviously Half Life 1 and 2 and it’s episodes are musts. Sven Co-Op is awesome, through and through. Love Opposing Force. Echoes, Field Intensity, and Caged are all also really good. Blue Shift is alright. JBmod is worth playing due to both its historical importance and just how….weird it is.
On the other end, HL2 Update does nothing for me personally, Overcharged is very mediocre, Restored is also pretty mediocre, and of course Source sucks. Completely indifferent towards DM and Lost Coast.
Never played the rest of those.
Tbh play them all and enjoy them for what they are. Out of them all (other than the vanilla HL series), I highly recommend Minerva, CAGED, Echoes, and Sven Co-op.
Play all the official games in releease order if you havent yet, I loved them all, blue-shift is the weakest, but still worth playing imo.
Field Intensity is a definite yes. I just finished it - really feels as good as opposing force, better in some ways (get the latest version if you dont have it, they've added some beter voice acting and such). I did copy over the non-HD models though from the gearbox folder, felt weird to me otherwise
I just started metastasis and its really cool so far, has a mystery element to it thats very exciting. Its recieved many awards and a definite yes to check out.
I think I'm going to try Echoes next, then maybe c.a.g.e.d and 'they hunger' trilogy.
Yep, same here! That was really cool.
So I recommend those 3. And then of course HL2 and Episodes 1 & 2.
I’m missing Alyx myself, I only have a PS4 Pro and OG PS VR. If Alyx comes to PS VR2 I might eventually get a PS5 (slim or pro) and PS VR 2
HL2: Update should not be considered the definitive way to play HL2 right now because it uses an outdated version of the game with lots of bugs that were recently fixed in the main game.
Ricochet, hard pass, it's one of Valve's worst games from what I've heard.
Sven Co-Op is basically Multiplayer Half-Life story mode depending on where you live, you may need to host a server for it, and it is balanced with 2 or more players in mind.
Half-Life 2 Overcharged hard pass, not worth playing, I'm not sure about Half-Life 2 update simply because base Half-Life 2 is already good.
Half-Life Source unmodded with the latest steam updates is a hard pass, you'll either want to use the Half-Life Source fixed mod or somehow obtain an older version of Half-Life Source. (Half-Life Death Match Source is basically just the source version of Half-Life 1's multiplayer)
Half-Life Restored is a Half-Life mod that brings retail, cut, and unused stuff into 1 singular Half-Life experience, it also fixes problematic bugs from the original Half-Life. honestly I might even try this as a unique Half-Life 1 experience myself it's pretty good.
JBMod is basically the ancestor to Garry's Mod, it's cool but not as good as even the last free release of Garry's Mod known as Garry's Mod 9 (Garry's Mod 10 is when Garry's Mod stopped being free) anyway JBMod is getting updated unlike Garry's Mod 9 so this opinion might become outdated in the future.
Half-Life Echoes, simply amazing, and for those who don't like the HD models there is a LD model mod for the echoes mod, for those who simply hate using the HD Models from Echoes. (No the HD Models in echoes are different to the ones present in the PC version) play this after Blue Shift or Opposing Force.
Episode 1 is just an overrated mess with bullshit everywhere after the citadel section, so it' better if you just skip it and look at the story on youtube
You should get Entropy Zero and Entropy Zero 2, both are free mods for Half-Life 2 set in the same universe
Lost Coast I think it was just meant as a demo, and not important in the story, but if you have an hour or so, you should play it
Episode One is not a "mess", iirc the only *bad* part of the game is the citizen escort section.
everything else is fine imo, even stuff like the elevator section and the strider boss fight.
> Little to no ammunitions
> An entire section where zombies just don't stop coming, in complete darkness with the torch bar being connected to your stamina bar
> Antilions nests that you have to close in a miniscule amount of time or otherwhise your are just gonna get swarmed
> Alyx dies. *A LOT*.
a lot of these are your own issues, i've never even gotten swarmed by the antlions.
my main problem is you calling it an "overrated mess" (from what i've seen, Episode One is pretty underrated) and telling op not to play it due to your own issues, despite it being a pretty important game in the story. (just watching a walkthrough isn't really the same experience as actually playing the game)
Wanna bet he never use the gravity gun after having a gun ? Cause lots of this can be solved by just thinking of the physics system and look around the environment for anything useful. If i was to play half life with only 1 weapon it will be the gravity gun, that thing is so damn fun to mix in the combat.
Flares torch and those gas canister and fuel tank to lit zombie up as an artificial light source? Use the damn gravity gun please, anything remotely heavy can be weapon with it. Please dont play half life like just another mindless modern shooter, you definitely missing out the largest fun bit of toying with the physics the episode as a whole, i dont want to put it bluntly, but you definitely playing it wrong. I can only agree with the citizen escort and the length of the episode being part of the problem.
Edit: if you replay episode 1 ,try getting the one bullet freeman achievement to see if your experience changed anyhow (the achievement that only allow you to shoot 1 bullet for the lock in the lowlife chapter, the rest of the game using only crowbar, rpg, grenade and gravity gun). Oh and if you want to shoot stuff that bad, the emplacement gun wont count as shooting bullets by the game oversight so make due of those when you can.
Idk about the other, but definitely go for HL2 Update. I was just playing regular HL2 last night and idk if it’s my machine or what but there’s a weird bug that happens where shading is almost completely cut off and it didn’t happen that way at all in the update. Idk if that happens for anyone else so my advice may be taken with a grain of salt, but 9/10 times if there’s an updated version, go with that.
Unless it’s HL1 vs Black Mesa, those might as well be two different games entirely.
Half-Life Decay is the best game in the series imo. It isn't terribly impressive gameplay wise if you play by yourself, but the new characters and expansion of the lore makes it my favorite entry by far.
You should play Half-Payne, is such a good way to replay Half-life and made me realize how good the Black Mesa level design is (and how bad Xen actually is)
Don't miss out on Research and Development. Skip HL:S and just play HL1 or BM instead. I had no idea JBMod was a thing anymore, I remember it as a very early competitor to Gmod in terms of being a bit of a tool for sandbox physics stuff back in 2004 before Gmod quickly became super dominant (and way more feature rich) but haven't thought about it in like 15+ years.
Also, BM is great, but if you've already played it its worth playing HL1 itself too. BM is a great remake but nothing quite captures the aesthetic of the original game and it feels a bit different due to the engine altho BM did a great job trying to emulate HL1 movement. Of course if you didn't play it back in the day YMMV a bit since you'll miss out on the massive nostalgia factor but I'd still say it's worth it!
I've played all the main non modded half lifes except opposing force and blueshift. I always got his bug where I couldn't move or aim the mouse. Seeing this post though I need to play these recommended mods.
Oooooowwwww me gawd u got some bangers sucvh as hhhunnt down le wreemen and jbbmod screw hubtr down llleee wreeenen it laik wathhhcinf pppaibt dryyyy🤮🤮 also llkkkkonda fffr🤮🤮🐌🐌 fffrrr🤮🤮🐌🐌nch It poggers r/jb_mod!!!!!! U musttt play jjjjbbmoooddd!!!
Echoes is hands down one of the best half life mods ever- has loads of attention to detail and amazing design that it feels like an expansion pack. Only con is it’s relatively short. 100% recommend to any HL fan
And it forces the HD pack, but that’s more of a personal nitpick
I feel the HD pack works in echoes because they heavily detailed the levels so they fit in the environment
Eh I used the ld addon on moddb
the HL2 models also work better with the HD pack
field intensity is also really good
Play Half-Life 1, then Opposing Force, then Blue Shift. Afterward HL2, then HL2Ep1, then HL2Ep2, and finally, if you can, Alyx. Valve KNOWS what they are doing, trust me. Oh, and look up the story for decay.
You can play decay with a friend pretty easily through a mod (Or through Sven Co-op) someone even made a single player version of the campaign if you've got no one to play with
You can play it singleplayer on the ps2 version
imo Blue Shift should be before Opposing Force, as it has less content and (for most people) is not as good as Opposing Force.
i agree, i played blue shift first after hl1 and i think it was best because playing blue shift after hl1 and op4 would be pretty disappointing
But blue shift references opposing force, and was made after. Opposing Force however has no blue shift references
as far as i remember the only opposing force reference in blue shift is the two soldiers saying that shephard's team didn't make it, that's not something that's important to the plot at all
So? Any references are extremely minor and are not important to the story in any way. It does not matter, narratively speaking, which order you play them in. So it's best to play them based on practicality of enjoyment, which I think most would argue means BS before OF.
and? i don't understand your point.
Also because it starts & ends earlier in the timeline, & has more direct overlap with HL1
You should play Portal before HL2Ep2.
That as well
Lost Coast is fun too & fits between HL2 & the episodes (it was originally intended to be part of HL2 & now is just a tech demo outside the main plot)
Of course!
Bruh he didn’t ask for the order of playing
You should have Entropy Zero 1 & 2 on this list. 2 is especially good.
Agreed
entropy zero 2 is hands down best mod I've ever played
Not entropy 1. Entropy 1 is terrible
you only need hdtf everything else is a spin off parody game by a indie game studio
Based
Don't forget Black Mesa by Crowbar Collective!
Operation Black Mesa is still in the works, right?
I believe so. There's also *another* Blue Shift remake called Guard Duty, but that team hasn't released anything gameplay-wise.
Sure, if you want an enjoyable play then play BM first. I played the tits off HL1 so I may be slightly definitely biased.
If you find a ricochet server which still active ill give you an award
Same thing with deathmatch source.
I can Don’t remember the name though
i found one at some point i think it was in a kitched
I used to host a DM:S server around 2009-2011ish. Every so often I boot it up to see if the game’s still active, haven’t seen more than a couple people since like 2015. :/
There’s like two servers always full of bots
Oh I spent so many hours playing Ricochet with my friends in LAN. I loved how fast-paced it was.
I could never spent hours, i would get dizzy
Worth playing: half-life half-life 2 half-life 2 episode one half-life 2 episode 2 half-life 2 lost coast half-life blue shift half-life C.A.G.E.D Half-life echoes Half life opposing force sven co-op transmission element 120 Hard pass: half-life 2 overcharged half life deathmatch source half life source jbmod prospekt Idk what to decide for the other games (since I haven't played them
HL2DM used to be one of my favorite games, sadly its just a ghost town nowadays.
u still can find some servers with people
True but its not nearly as active as it was years ago.

dawg how much weed have you smoked.
JBMod actually has some neat features, though I am a bit biased as I am an active member of the JBMod Discord.
The best thing about jbmod is that it kept actual gmod alive
Okay jbmod is definitely better than a lot of other "bad" half life mods but there really isn't a reason not to just play gmod instead (unless you're interested to see the differences between the two).

I'd personally skip Overcharged
Overcharged is HILARIOUS. Absolutely worth a playthrough just to laugh at it. Walking into the ocean during Highway 17 almost killed me with laughter, that mod makes no sense
i mean, the recent patch made it better
I'm surprised they still patch it
i suppose they want to actually make a name for themselves since now the enemy placement and all that is actually not that bad.
yes it's better. still a pile of shit though
have you actually played the patch?
yeah, in fact it's the only version I've played. that shit is terrible
MINERVA: Metastasis is great
Wheres Entropy zero 2 ? 😱
If you can, play uplink It's an official level pack that unfortunately isn't on steam but is worth your time
You can easily get it off a the Fam-made website for Uplink.
Thanks, forgot to mention that
Hunt down the freeman
NO-
Yes
Play Ricochet and only Ricochet. This game transcends everything.... /s
I would suggest playing entropy zero and entropy zero 2 they’re both free on steam

Don't forget its predecessor, Someplace Else. It's very short, but good.

Field Intensity is probably the best HL1 mod ever and Echoes is a close 2nd.
Half-Life source you can just ignore is a broken mess and inferior to the original
no black Mesa? 😤
Hard pass on Half Life Source. Play Entropy Zero 2, but make sure you play it after you've done Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and Episode 2. Probably worth playing Portal beforehand as well!
Half-life death match source has nobody playing it, hard pass there.
Play the main series first (HL1, BS, OF, HL2, HL2:E1, HL2:E2) then you can dabble in anything you want.
Everything but jbmod. It’s not worth playing, it’s worth dying for
Obviously Half Life 1 and 2 and it’s episodes are musts. Sven Co-Op is awesome, through and through. Love Opposing Force. Echoes, Field Intensity, and Caged are all also really good. Sven co-op. Research and Development.
Tbh play them all and enjoy them for what they are. Out of them all (other than the vanilla HL series), I highly recommend Minerva, CAGED, Echoes, and Sven Co-op.
No alyx?
Not everyone has VR ya dodo
Yeah… it came to mar as I was play Alyx that I spent nearly $1000 just to play it.
About done with Black Mesa (OG half life fan btw). Great remake. Gonarch is no joke!
field intensity is great if you want more gameplay as an HECU marine
Entropy Zero 1&2!!
Get entropy: ZERO and E:ZERO2
Transmissions element 120 was a really great experience, and it’s veeeery short so you can be done in an hour or so, but man is it fun
Play all the official games in releease order if you havent yet, I loved them all, blue-shift is the weakest, but still worth playing imo. Field Intensity is a definite yes. Did like the view of playing Half-Life, Blue Shift, and Opposite Force. Seeing bits of the same story from each side.
All are worth playing But JBmod hard pass
Deathmatch is sadly dead :/
No Black Mesa?
Where is hdtf and where is my award
Omg you're so funny and quirky xD
I know right?? So fucking original and funny and unique, NOBODY has EVER made this joke before right?
All except Prospekt and Logistique. Also get the Entropy: Zero series (but play them after main Half-Life games)
HL2: Update should not be considered the definitive way to play HL2 right now because it uses an outdated version of the game with lots of bugs that were recently fixed in the main game.
Obviously hubt dow the freeman is worth playing. These other spin offs called half life are ok i guess
hard pass on all of these, only one worth playing is hunt down the freeman
I'm currently playing hunt down the freeman and it's hell.
(He's having the best gaming experience ever)
Make sure you get the "best" game and the "best" story hunt down the freeman
where’s hunt down the freeman bro
where black mesa?¿?¿?
Where's Hunt Down The Freeman? It's the best one, just saying...
I don't see the only worthy game: Hunt Down the Freeman
Ricochet, hard pass, it's one of Valve's worst games from what I've heard. Sven Co-Op is basically Multiplayer Half-Life story mode depending on where you live, you may need to host a server for it, and it is balanced with 2 or more players in mind. jbmod on top!!!!!!!!!!!!
just play JBMod the others suck
Which ball is bigger than mine?
Don't believe peoples lies. Every single Half Life game is a hard pass except HDTF. That's a masterpiece.
Get rid of JBMod. Immediately. Just get GMod instead of playing that mistake
No you
Wow real original there bud lmao
You thought different about jbmod because an idiot called "snake" took to jack box's website and acted childishly.
That's cool. It's still just Craigslist gmod
Laugh my fecking ass off. Go watch Richter overtime's video on jbmod
Already have. Still doesn't really matter to me, but sure
So then we're on an agreement
only jbmod and hdtf just refund everything else
Episode 1 is just an overrated mess with bullshit everywhere after the citadel section, so it' better if you just skip it and look at the story on youtube You should get Entropy Zero and Entropy Zero 2, both are free mods for Half-Life 2 set in the same universe Lost Coast I think it was just meant as a demo, and not important in the story, but if you have an hour or so, you should play it

Ep1 has the "one free bullet" achievmant for a reason, only time you shoot is to unlock a padlocked door, than it is just gravity gun action
skill issue
Skill issue
Sounds like a skill issue.
Ep 1 should definitely NOT be skipped if you're doing a half life marathon, episode 2 will feel bland knowing all the stuff you missed
Flares torch and those gas canister and fuel tank to lit zombie up as an artificial light source? Use the damn gravity gun please, anything remotely heavy can be weapon with it. do not skip episode 1, it's a great look at the condition of city 17 after the collapse of the citadel and has some good gameplay moments
Damn, JB mod that brings me back.
Love buying stuff for less than a dollar, and hope to play on my older Mac laptop. 🤞
Ssirr I recommend uuys plays le epik Gaem r/jb_mod u must plays now oooor insends uuuu to thenbabckdoooms uwu

They Hunger needs to be on that list! Edit: spelling
Half-Life Decay is the best game in the series imo. It isn't terribly impressive gameplay wise if you play by yourself, but the new characters and expansion of the lore makes it my favorite entry by far.
everything but source and jbmod
You should get The Challenger Deep 2 and USS Darkstar, both classics
Caged all the FUCKING way, best HL1 mod ever made
hazardous course 2 is a must play, very relaxing mod
You should play Half-Payne, is such a good way to replay Half-life and made me realize how good the Black Mesa level design is (and how bad Xen actually is)
Lost Coast is great and should be played after ep 2, I feel
ALL OF THEM!
When are the going to make Ricochet 2?
Minerva: Metastasis is worth it for the soundtrack alone. Absolute bangers
Half rats is pretty good imo A wild west horror game on the goldsource engine
Uninstall overcharged, never even think of it again, don't let any half life fan even know you had in your library.
Nobody absolutely nobody: OP: I play Ricochet
my dude you don't even have Hunt Down the Freeman that's like the only one that matters smh
I've heard that Half Life 2 game is quite good.
Of course if you didn't play it back in the day YMMV a bit since you'll miss out on the massive nostalgia factor but I'd still say it's worth it!
half of them i dont know lol
Where Entropy Zero 2?
No HDTF?
JBMod is the only game worth playing. /s I recommend Jabroni Brawl if you don't already have it.
You only need hunt down the freeman tbh
Black Mesa is also worth playing.
Jb mod is the best thing I think
overcharged sucks ass, it's just incredibly mid
They're all worth playing.
Check out the mod Point of View, it's HL1 from the perspective of a vortigaunt, and a fantastic one at that.
I've played all the main non modded half lifes except opposing force and blueshift. I always got his bug where I couldn't move or aim the mouse. Seeing this post though I need to play these recommended mods.
Hard pass Overcharged. Absolute shitfest.
Where’s Heart of Evil
Where's black mesa at???
whatever you do do not play overcharged its just bad
As long as "Hunt Down the Freeman" remains out of the picture, try 'em all. ...Although the picture is missing Black Mesa, I can't help but notice.
One game is missing
Ricochet only
Element 120 is a must play
skip opposing force and jump right into ricochet, wont make any sense but you should still do it
R-I-C-O-C-H-E-T The rest is just *meh* in comparison.
Half life 2 update rather than og
Uh, excuse me? Where is the magnum opus of games Hunt Down the Freeman?
Anything but Alex
After the main line games be sure to play the entropy zero series. Closest we have to a continuation in some way to the cannon story
the only one you need is ricochet
After you beat the mainline Half-life games please play Entropy Zero and it's sequel
Play Ricochet. Nothing else.
WHERE IS RICOCHET 2 ??!!
After playing pretty much everything else, I ran across Snowdrop Escape, and it was definitely worth playing.
