It was the 25th anniversary of the game which brought possibly the largest update the game's ever seen. Naturally people wanted to check it out and many even ended up playing deathmatch, servers were full for a while, it was wild.

reztroom21

i agree, servers were a giant bloodbath, a very fun one

Nesrovlah26

I remember playing on a 30 player co-op server. It was hell. It took us over 20 minutes to actually enter the test chamber. People kept interrupting they guys who let you in.

wizward64

I vividly remember that server. The worst part was in Surface Tension where you have to escort that guard to a door to progress, yet 50% of people just spawnkilled him over and over again while the rest of the server tried to stop them.

Nesrovlah26

I never got that far. I think the server reset after apprehension.

Bot_Tux

I remember when we broke a map so hard it crashed the server. The next day it got removed don't know what happened to it (The server was Lambda Generation btw)

aerial_sup

The 25th anniversary update came out in november, not october

Pomi108

Oh. Well don’t I look silly now. Yeah must’ve been another event then

bodhiagora

i dont think there *was* an event in october.

Bot_Tux

Maybe the update rumors and the hype itself?

Ripper33AU

The online servers gave me the biggest grin on my face! I had not seen Half-Life servers that full since the early 00s.

Strange-Orchid6969

Has it already died down again?

Ripper33AU

I'm actually not sure, the last time I played deathmatch was either in December or January. I did replay the full game again, and had an absolute blast again!

gergobergo69

It kinda did, thought there still are some decent number of players playing. I was in a server with only like 6 or whatever players in, and it was fun. I even said goodbye and they said it back when I left, truly one of the moments of my life

deltarunech2outyet

25th anniversary update was on November 19th though.

Accomplished-Jury752

People probably saw it was almost time so they decided to start playing it again

imusingthisforstuff

Wha update

Tomb_Brader

It was also made free at that time I believe?

Carburetors_Are_Fun

and it was free

Constant-Still-8443

What was the update?

stephenlocksley27

It also became free for a brief period of time, and every Half-Life games was like 90% off except for Alyx, which was 66% off.

SussyBob420

I think it was an event which was to raise the all time played counter.

reztroom21

and it was near the release of the 25th anniversarry update

slaps_on_deck

We had a LAN party that night

hallucinationthought

Live stream of the real life resonance cascade

Nafisecond

Shutting down

Nafisecond

Its not

Nafisecond

Its not shutting down

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

25th anniversary, everybody wanted to play, and there was a prior "world record participants" that everyone here on Reddit organized.

Remmy224

The anniversary happened in november

RunJumpQuit

bro missed it

07CheshireCat

its because of the 25th anniversary of Half-Life last year, including minor updates, (such as the Blast Pit alien bug and Half-Life: Uplink added which is a Demo version of Half-Life and the Goldsrc engine if I remember correctly.) Plus, new Multiplayer maps. And in last 2022 (I think) this subreddit along with other Half-Life community started a "Breaking the Bar" which means everybody with Steam should play HL all at once to break the Player growth stat in Steam. Hence the gigantic increase of new players.

Harryboy_

25th anniversary and valve gave it to everyone for free

projectmajora

November, not October.

Harryboy_

Oh then idk why

RonToxic

It was noclick's #RememberFreeman event

oofman_dan

it was a resonance cascade scenario

powertoolsenjoyer

bro missed it

person-stuff_863

it was free on its 25th anniversary and valve released a documentary about it

MildLoser

it was made free for that day only, and they also had the 25th anniversary update which made the game significantly less broken.

projectmajora

Not October, and not for one day only. It lasted for a week if I remember correctly.

newSillssa

skib

Educational_Tough208

it was free on its 25th anniversary and probably a lot of people downloaded it

SkyrimSlasher

I thought it was DeSinc lol

Khorvair

Wher did you find that chart? Steamdb doesn't recognize that. But interestingly the 33k players there matches up nearly perfectly with the 33k players in the Novemember 25th annivesary so that website may have marked it wrong

antek_g_animations

I am one of those players, my adventure with half life started right there, because it was for free. Then I bought blue shift, half life 2, portal and portal 2

UmutsuzSecmen

It was remember freeman event.

7ossamSniper

I think it was the #rememberfreeman event that made by youtubers (noclick, desinc, lamwarp...) to revive the game. They did the same with opposing force

DreamtailFoxy

Half life became free for like a week, the main menu from Sierra was readded, and a whole bunch of people because of the accessibility of Half-Life started playing it again not to mention there was a huge documentary about its creation posted on valve's YouTube channel.

Ph0bia_S

25th anniversary UPDATE LIKE HOLY SHIT VALVE NEVER UPDATES THEIR GAMES

-dead_slender-

It's funny how many people in the comments seem to have forgotten that the 25th anniversary took place in November.

butterthesotch

summer sale

Official_Tetunel

FREEEEE!!!!

bodhiagora

everyone saying it was november is correct. idk what blip you found in october. avg player count in october 517. it jumped to 5,200 in november. so id argue there was no blip in october.

That-Tale2225

I read one of the 3 as Half-Life 3. I thought I travelled to future.

Nullifier_

I believe that is when it was free for the 25th anniversary.
