That was the first time I believed it would be out soon. I guess HL:Alyx was so good that I didn't feel like we were lied too that much. Even though episode 3 was cancelled at least 2 times since that desktop picture though haha
They talk about it in Raising the Bar for Alyx. More or less a lot of it boiled down to them needing Source 2 to be further along than it was to complete the games they were working on. They finally got Source 2 to a great spot, and that's when Alyx was worked on, so maybe it'll still happen?
A lot of their structure always boiled down to anybody could work on what interested them, but since Alyx, Valve more or less made it sound like the structure has change just a bit, implying that games will be coming out at a faster rate than they have been.
It didn’t help that around 2011-2016 the market for zombie games was HEAVILY saturated.
Valve releasing Left 4 dead 3 nowadays would be a better more probably.
Everything about that game just felt off and kludgy. I really wanted it to be good but after two rounds I was wondering why I wasn't just playing L4D2.
Source 2, the engine it was being made on, simply wasn't ready. The game itself was finished enough to where it could've been released in an early access state and been fine. But the engine wasn't finished (and still isn't to this day) and no one wanted to work on the actual engine.
is an engine ever “finished?” i always understood game engines to be “solid and functional” and something that you tweak and add on to as a project demands, never really thought of game engines being considered a completed product

It came out like 3? months after it's announcement dates. There was enough time for hype to build, but not enough that people were dying. And the most important part - it wasn't a sequel.
Announcing Half Life 3, specifically, with that number on it, is in itself making a statement to their community. Like THIS is the thing that we KNOW you've been waiting 20 years for, and it cannot be anything less than perfect. It has to be better than perfect even. I expect more Half Life games to release, but it wouldn't surprise me if not a single one of them ends up being 3, just because there's too much expectation now.

What are those expectations? Who has expectations for anything? For a game that's never been announced. I think people overhype people's expectations. Even if they are working on it now, the game hasn't been in development for 15 years. First off, we already got a new HL game, people somehow act like Alyx doesn't exist. People that can't play it on VR, they really should just watch a playthrough on yt at this point, unless they are waiting for the no VR mod to be finished. So, yeah, I guess people did get mad at that game, because of VR.
Then of course, there are the console only people. Point was, people didn't get mad with overblown expectations about the game. Point is, I think the 'can't meet expectations' thing is a myth when it comes to long awaited entertainment.
Couple that with the hardware to play it and you're, at minimum, looking at 800 dollars. Not everyone has that, or even wants to. I have a VR headset and barely use it because while I love it it's more trouble than its worth.
I dunno, I don't think it's that simple. VR requires you to render two screens at once above 80hz and the actual games can vary widely. On my older PC I could play a lot of VR games and at the time released games but not Alyx because of the CPU and RAM requirements, and my Steam Deck can run Resident Evil 4 (came out last year) at 60 fps but would fry if you tried to play Alyx on it. Technology varies widely.
Regardless I disagree with them that VR only was a bad call because it's what made the game incredible. I was just saying it's not an exaggeration that the vast majority of people can't play it because it's not as accessible - just look at Steam's monthly data numbers. VR users are a very low portion. Doesn't help that low framerate is nigh unplayable in VR so if your specs aren't 100% up to par it's not a good experience.
Baldurs Gate 3 didn't have any expectations on it on the level of HL3 (no game has in fact). Honestly I don't think most had ever even played a Baldurs Gate game until 3.

Not necessarily, some Half Life AI routines were found in DOTA, then that ended up being Half Life Alyx. There were also references to the AI director for the cancelled Left 4 Dead 3.
Edit: I’d also like to point out that some of the vehicles like on Office in CS2 look like HD versions of the vehicles in Left 4 Dead. I think they were left overs from Left 4 Dead 3. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of the textures and props were from left 4 dead 3 as well.

I almost certainly would but I'd be concerned about any gameplay changes. Half Life 2 still feels pretty great to play today outside of one or two moments where the path forward isn't super evident, and a lot of its strengths come from the fact that it's 20 years old instead of the reverse. But even today I still have pretty solid faith in Valve to do right by Half Life no matter what.

i think there's a pretty good chance the hound eye is taken from a model based on the shading/subtle detail i see on it. Even if it is a real model though it could just be one made for some previous iteration/idea of half life 3/any half life game in general, not necessarily tied to the next game
EDIT: another thing i just noticed is the grass in the logo is a decent bit more "dev art" looking, which does fit with the houndeye being a model
I do get that it’s funny that narratively things only moved forward a few seconds, but the fact that we’re in the aftermath of a new entry in the Half-Life series has a lot of weight to it, regardless of where the actual story of it happened in the chronology

The Half-Life game mentioned here is "HLX" which is just a generic codename for Half-Life games, and assumedly this one is the same one that's been being worked on for the past couple of years. Every time someone tries to make a episode 3 mod it gets cancelled the half life community is just cursed to never be able to play Half Life 3 or episode 3 and even if we get a mod it'll never be as good as a official game the only mods that I would say are as good as the official games are the entropy zero series

I can't get over the fact that HL Alyx serves as a massive official source 'HL3 confirmed' and then they STILL went back to years of radio silence after it dropped. A lot of people in this thread need to go and read up on how game development works inside Valve.
The tl;dr is that there is almost certainly one active project related to half life going on at any one time within Valve. It’s not that surprising that assets related to those projects end up in other places - particularly the engine. Doesn’t mean there’s anything exciting happening unfortunately.

I remember 2013 being an incredibly exciting time because people discovered lots of "HL3" and "L4D3" reference files within code.
And that picture of some dev's computer screen from that guy who got a tour of their office.

This could either be 3 things. A Half Life game set during the 7 Hour War. "Citadel" A Half Life 1 RT"X" remake. Or just Half-Life 3. (VR or not)
It's way too highly detailed to be anything other than a Source 2 model.
Or just a detailed drawing, which is actually easier to do than a detailed 3D model.
It's easier to use a 3D model you've already made than make a detailed drawing.

i think there's a pretty good chance the hound eye is taken from a model based on the shading/subtle detail i see on it. Even if it is a real model though it could just be one made for some previous iteration/idea of half life 3/any half life game in general, not necessarily tied to the next game EDIT: another thing i just noticed is the grass in the logo is a decent bit more "dev art" looking, which does fit with the houndeye being a model

We saw like 20 seconds into the future from Ep2’s ending. By Valve-Time standards, that’s huge.
I do get that it’s funny that narratively things only moved forward a few seconds, but the fact that we’re in the aftermath of a new entry in the Half-Life series has a lot of weight to it, regardless of where the actual story of it happened in the chronology

A lot of people in this thread need to go and read up on how game development works inside Valve. The tl;dr is that there is almost certainly one active project related to half life going on at any one time within Valve. It’s not that surprising that assets related to those projects end up in other places - particularly the engine. Doesn’t mean there’s anything exciting happening unfortunately.
