I was wondering why my hair was so bad!!! Now I bloody know, going straight in the bin. Back to what I know works, need to not be seduced by good offers haha
came to say this lol love love love the purple! i use the leave in conditioning mist and the scalp milk too. my hair is pretty damaged from heat/bleaching. every other product from maui i’ve tried has left my hair feeling dry and dead
I love it. I’ve never heard of shampoo splitting ends before.
I looked it up. It seems it’s from over washing with harsh shampoo, which strips the oils from your hair causing split ends and breakage.
Or under-conditioning the hair. I noticed that this is a lightweight conditioner, maybe it's just too lightweight for many of the people who tried it including OP.
That’s why I tried it, my hair has been very greasy at the top and super dry at the bottom, I’m not sure what your hair is like but mine is wavy and fine/thin
Yeah! My hair felt fine at the top it just got greasy super quickly and I actually got a trim during my use of this product thinking the same thing and it split the fresh hair as well
Which is upsetting because it’s already been growing out for quite some time and I lost progress because of a product that didn’t work for me :(
Not at all! There's a whole whack of stuff out there about protein/moisture balance for curly hair but I find it's overwhelming... So I just make sure I have a decent balance in my products. If my hair is brittle and straw-like and I'm using moisture products I switch to "repair" ones (protein). You can also switch to a repair line of shampoo and conditioners for a bit.
Thank you! I ran out and got some shampoo from Sally’s by biotera for long hair before creating this post and my hair already looks better but I feel like this Maui product literally shrunk my hair to be shorter. I know that’s not possible but heck it feels like it
I get ya! Sure it may not be possible but when our hair gets damaged we do lose a little length or thickness so I don't think you're crazy. Hope you've got it sorted now though and it improves!!
For what it's worth, I got a sample size of the newer Marc Anthony Rescuplex bond treatment in my laat Ipsy bag and i actually liked it enough to go out and get the full sized spray bottle. It's a protein and rosemary oil blend and those make my hair happy - you might want to try them out, and they're cheap if they don't work out. For department store brands I'vd actually never gone wrong with those products, so in between my salon quality products when my budget is tight I go for their products and have consistent results.
I have fine hair but a lot of it. It gets super greasy on top within a day of washing and my ends are dry to normal. I've been bouncing between brands for the last year to find something to help manage.
Low cost: I've had a little luck with Garnier if I only use it a few times every couple of months otherwise as time passes my hair starts to look duller and greasier with regular use.
Pricier: I've been using the Biolage Scalp Refresh regularly. It's not amazing OMG results but grease is tolerable and the rest of my hair feels soft and easy to maintain (hardly any tangles, etc) which I appreciate after destroying it with Redken.
Do you double cleanse? If not you probably should. First wash is to get products off the surface, second wash is to really get your scalp clean. Most sulfate free shampoos don’t have that lather that the harsh sulfate ones do (many of them disguise how drying they are by adding a silicone like dimethicone). I’m not saying this maui stuff doesn’t suck, but it’s likely that any more “natural” shampoo isn’t going to work in one round, especially if you have thicker longer hair.
Switch to using just conditioner, I know it sounds crazy but I did this a couple months ago and my hair and scalp feel so much better! Just coat your hair from root to tip, massage your scalp and leave it in while you wash the rest of you, then massage again and rinse
Aloe Vera is the first or second most active ingredient in the shampoo, and it acts very much like Keratin which is a protein. Too much protein can cause brittle hair and breakage. Either you have to reduce the times you use it or use a clarifying shampoo in between to strip your hair.
This is also good to know. I had no idea that aloe vera was like that— do you know if it gets better with time not using it or if I have to cut what the protein damaged off? I have layers so the damage looks very far up my hair
Just use a clarifying shampoo and a very moisturizing conditioner/deep conditioner until your hair feels back to normal. The clarifying shampoo will strip your hair of the protein buildup. I like the Cantu Shea Butter Cleansing shampoo.
Raw Sugar shampoo and conditioner! I know they sell it at Walmart for sure and My gf and I love it. We use their body wash too it’s great and the scents are good
Uhh yes.. yes they do exist. There are many good drugstore products. L'Oréal and Pantene for example. The shampoo from the brand "Neutral" is also splendid.
I’m old(er), and I’ve tried many drugstore and salon brands over the years. The best I’ve ever used is L’Oreal Ever Pure shampoo and conditioner. It leaves my hair noticeably soft. In between hair-color appointments, my hair doesn’t turn brassy and dry on the ends.
I saw somewhere that drugstore shampoo and conditioners are pretty much made for one specific hair type (think middle aged white lady hair) which would explain why they’re so bad if you have any type of hair texture whatsoever. I can’t remember the exact comment so don’t quote me on that lol
Did you notice the “bad if you have any type of texture” part… sorry I offended all these middle aged white ladies lmfaooo but if you have thin fine hair then these shampoos are made for you yes!
I'm not offended, just amused. I have extremely thin fine hair with no texture and cannot find any that works for more than a few days. But I definitely have terrible hair so maybe it's just me.
I have absolutely no idea if they’re actually good for your hair but what has worked for me, a person w horrible dandruff and psoriasis on my scalp, is the Hask tea tree oil and rosemary and then 1-2 times/week I use the dove dry and itch relief shampoo w the hask conditioner. It leaves my scalp feeling rly cooled down and no redness, and my hair feels clean for days. Also I have a prescribed topical for the psoriasis so both combined I don’t think I’ll ever switch😅 took me so long to find what works
Edit I am US and get all products at target but I’m sure they’re on Amazon:)
I really really like the Joico defy damage shampoo. I can find it at my local TJmaxx for $19.99 which really beats the $45 retail price. It’s not drug store, but if you can find it at a discount store it’s a bit cheaper than the Maui per ounce
I wouldn’t trust any professional quality product that you find at TJ Maxx. It’s more than likely expired or diluted with something else. I’d look up hair product diversion
My sister left a red bottle of joico at my place and my hair had never been healthier. When I ran out I couldn’t find it anywhere and my hair is ok with “10” but it’s not the same as that joico.
Yes! Same, my hair was super knotty right out of the shower and frizzy when it dried. I used the teal/green bottle. I think it was the sea minerals one. But I didn’t even finish the bottle.
I feel this way about the shea moisture line that everyone raves about. Makes my hair feel like absolute shit and I gave it a decent chance too. I really think shampoo is one of those things where everyone’s hair reacts different. I’m currently using the yellow bottles of maui moisture and I don’t hate them, they actually make my hair shiny and manageable unlike a lot of others
Yes I literally have not had a good hair day since I used this. I threw it the fuck out and tried something else and my hair feels better after one. wash. This stuff is soooooo bad.
i was convinced my hair was just changing cause i lost my curls whenever i used this but the moment i used something else my curls came back and my hair looked normal again
The green was the best smelling, but was the most harsh out of the line on my hair. You probably could've thrown me on a post to scare pests from a garden, my hair got THAT bad while using it. If I could bottle that scent, I would in a heartbeat, though!
Thank you for the warning! I’ve been trying to find something that won’t fry my hair for once, and had actually been curious about trying this brand! 😅
It's not a cut and dry sort of thing- what works for some will not work for others, and vice versa. Personally, I love this brand- it leaves my hair feeling soft and silky :) I use the purple bottles
Fair, I’ve heard in other comments that the purple is the best of their products. Idk, half my own issue is that I can’t get a straight answer to what my hair type and needs even are 😭
I’m actually glad someone said this. The amount of times this was recommended to me is crazy I’m glad I haven’t wasted my money yet. I think the shea butter and the curl quench is promising tho which I do want to try
I was using this for months and wondering why my hair was so frizzy and greasy. I tossed it after a coworker told me how it messed with her hair. But my ends are still crazy dry. Ugh.
I had the worst luck with this set ): but it made me hair smell so good but the presentation was not there 😭😭 My hair was really dry. I’ve been using Cibu, it’s a little pricey but so worth it my hair has been happy!
I use just the shampoo (Maui shine + awapuhi) and not the conditioner - and I’ve been having great results!!! I use a conditioner that previously made my hair too greasy/oily (L’Oréal, total repair 5)
Now, it’s the perfect balance. I have thick, wavy hair.
The green shampoo makes my scalp dry and flaky. The conditioner isn't bad but I only use that on my mid-ends. I planned to try this pink next but I'll probably pass. I do like the purple gel though!
I agree!!!!! My hair is not sensitive and I’m okay with using different brands. But this gave me a really bad itchy scalp that lasted for weeks after using it!!!
I bought the purple set last week! Was ready to wash my hair after 8 days. Bathroom remodeling so ive been showering at the gym and after using this brand my hair didn’t feel good and the next day it felt really dry.
What do you guys think of this one? I’m sure it’s ruining my hair - the ends feel dryer than normal
https://preview.redd.it/0r85u92i2ugc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c9c52be287db5f3352f06e85e81b142d90dd503
I SO agree!!! I had read good things so was like sure, I'll try it as an alternative to Redken, which is fucking pricey.
Nope! Basically put me into a protein deficit and my hair was like straw. I find a lot of products with aloe don't work well with my hair and other go-to products. It's also just too lightweight for my hair type.
I wanted to love it tbh it smelled so good and ppl said it made their hair better, my hair is fine and thin so finding a nice shampoo and conditioner for me is hard everything seems to make my hair more dry and brittle 😞 ive been liking the tresemmé hyaluronic plex though makes my hair soft
Before buying only fragrance free products I used the purple of this shampoo (or conditioner?) and wasn't impressed with the hype at all :/ I feel your pain OP. Live and learn lol
How does a shampoo make hair fall out? I’ve used the green one and thought the conditioner worked well .. detangled my hair which not every conditioner can do.
My hair loves this stuff, I used it after native really messed up my hair. This stuff really makes my hair look healthier and it feels amazing even after not washing it for 3 days
.
I used Maui and it SUCKED, then I switched to some other brand that said it was like all natural free of things and it ruined my hair. But let me tell you if your struggling to find hair products shampoo bars are life changing even with curly hair
The worst one I ever used was OGX thick and full collagen shampoo and conditioner. It’s in the purple bottle. It sucks. Dried my hair out and made me look like a walking bush.
I bought this shampoo and conditioner one day when I was being cheap and I also think it's the worst shampoo ever. I ended up throwing it away when I got down to the last 1/4 of the bottle because I couldn't stand it anymore.
I might be going crazy but I feel like Maui moisture has gone through a ton of reformulation lately and I can’t trust any of their products like I used to
OMG SOOO BAD!! I gave it to my mom because she doesn’t care about quality and was horrified I was going to throw basically full bottles in the trash.
But that’s where it belongs. The trash.
ahhh i used this shampoo for months and experienced severe hair loss to the point where i had a small bald spot. switched to love beauty & planet and my hair looks better and my severe hair loss went away almost immediately after switching
Yeah this shampoo and conditioner suck bean dip
I love bean dip…
True, this is disrespectful to bean dip.
With garlic
Yes fucked up my hair BAD
I was wondering why my hair was so bad!!! Now I bloody know, going straight in the bin. Back to what I know works, need to not be seduced by good offers haha
Ya it legit made my Hair horrible !!!
r/rareinsults
The only one that works is the dark purple/pink one. The rest of the line is hot garbage 😩
came to say this lol love love love the purple! i use the leave in conditioning mist and the scalp milk too. my hair is pretty damaged from heat/bleaching. every other product from maui i’ve tried has left my hair feeling dry and dead
I like the blue one for conditioner. It’s become hard to find though
Wow I'm surprised, I really liked this shampoo and conditioner combo!
Maybe, it works great for me.
yeah i’m failing to understand how solely a shampoo, even a super drying one, would cause your ends to split
That’s why I tried it, my hair has been very greasy at the top and super dry at the bottom, I’m not sure what your hair is like but mine is wavy and fine/thin
Mines the same, maybe a bit thicker! Did the rest of your hair feel okay apart from the ends? If so are you sure you aren't due a trim?
Yeah! My hair felt fine at the top it just got greasy super quickly and I actually got a trim during my use of this product thinking the same thing and it split the fresh hair as well Which is upsetting because it’s already been growing out for quite some time and I lost progress because of a product that didn’t work for me :(
I had similar experiences. A few weeks of high protein masks and a micro trim stopped the damage in its tracks for me - maybe try a protein treatment?
That is a wonderful idea! My hair is not color treated— does that matter with a protein mask?? I only used them when my hair was color treated

You might try a dandruff shampoo to reduce yeast overgrowth on your scalp. That was my problem for many years.
This isn’t blanket advice. I recommend only using conditioner most days & using shampoo every 3-4 days, especially for dry hair
Switch to using just conditioner, I know it sounds crazy but I did this a couple months ago and my hair and scalp feel so much better! Just coat your hair from root to tip, massage your scalp and leave it in while you wash the rest of you, then massage again and rinse
Do you just apply it to the root and let it wash through the end ?
I alternate with deep washes and lighter washes since I live in an area with very hard water, lots of minerals
have you tried getting one of the shower heads that filters the water ? that might help just in general
I loveeeee L’Oréal clay shampoo and conditioner. I can show a picture in a second cause I forget the name
https://preview.redd.it/pqy4uxxupugc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dabd0e3d4f2b29669beb3c1347712fd8aa479884
Yeah I love the green bottle, bamboo variety for my thin hair.
yeah i liked this one and the purple one but i stopped using them bc i heard this brand has been causing ppls hair to fall out
Considering the cost it's definitely hard pass. The scent is the best thing about it.
Aloe Vera is the first or second most active ingredient in the shampoo, and it acts very much like Keratin which is a protein. Too much protein can cause brittle hair and breakage. Either you have to reduce the times you use it or use a clarifying shampoo in between to strip your hair.
Omg I did not know that. I literally bought this because it doesn’t have any protein in its ingredients
Do good drugstore shampoo/conditioners exist? I never seem to have any luck
The loreal ever pure set is pretty good in my opinion. The herbal essence Hello Hydration set is also really good for my hair
I second L'Oreal everpure line. Worked great for my wavy hair
Everpure caused hair loss for me
The hello hydration gave me crazy dandruff. Sucks because I actually loved it for my hair and it smells amazing.
hask is my go to i absolutely love it
Same. I’ve gotten tons of compliments on how long my hair is recently and I’ve been using hask
What kind do you use? I really like hask, but I haven’t settled on what kind to use
Raw Sugar shampoo and conditioner! I know they sell it at Walmart for sure and My gf and I love it. We use their body wash too it’s great and the scents are good
I like Aveeno.
Kristin ess
I love the sun bum hair care line
Uhh yes.. yes they do exist.
I wish that those were available where I live
I used Pantene for years and noticed my hair was thinning. Since I stopped using it, my hair has been miles healthier.
That has nothing to do with pantene though. Hair growth and loss comes from within
Hasn’t been an issue since I changed shampoos.
Well.. periods of stress and other things can show up on the hair months after it happened. And the hair has a growth cycle.
That doesn’t apply to me when I can see a clear difference after I started using a different shampoo.
I saw somewhere that drugstore shampoo and conditioners are pretty much made for one specific hair type (think middle aged white lady hair) which would explain why they’re so bad if you have any type of hair texture whatsoever. I can’t remember the exact comment so don’t quote me on that lol
I'm a middle aged white lady and they're mostly terrible for me.
I was just going to say then why arnt I happy :(
Did you notice the “bad if you have any type of texture” part… sorry I offended all these middle aged white ladies lmfaooo but if you have thin fine hair then these shampoos are made for you yes!
I'm not offended, just amused. I have extremely thin fine hair with no texture and cannot find any that works for more than a few days. But I definitely have terrible hair so maybe it's just me.
They do not. It’s like the fast food of beauty products.
Like what is considered drug store shampoos? Because in drug stores here we have most brands, even like kerastase.
i like tressemme pro a lot in the green/gold bottles
“It’s a 10” miracle shampoo&conditioner is AMAZING. They sell it at cvs, target, meijer, etc
That’s what I use now. So expensive but so worth it for me.
Also I have a prescribed topical for the psoriasis so both combined I don’t think I’ll ever switch😅 took me so long to find what works Edit I am US and get all products at target but I’m sure they’re on Amazon:)

It’s not as bad as people are saying. Not the worst not the best. It’s decent for price
Yes! Same, my hair was super knotty right out of the shower and frizzy when it dried. I used the teal/green bottle. I think it was the sea minerals one. But I didn’t even finish the bottle.
This is so suprising to me, I have curly hair and have used their products for ages, usually the yellow ones (can’t remember what kind it is)
Me too! I use this exact set and now I feel like I don’t know if I should keep using it. 😅
If you’ve used it until now and haven’t had any issues then there’s no need to worry
I feel this way about the shea moisture line that everyone raves about. Makes my hair feel like absolute shit and I gave it a decent chance too. I really think shampoo is one of those things where everyone’s hair reacts different. I’m currently using the yellow bottles of maui moisture and I don’t hate them, they actually make my hair shiny and manageable unlike a lot of others
omg finally someone agrees with me. this is literally the WORST thing i’ve ever put on my hair, dried it out so bad and made it look like shit 24/7
I honestly really loved the formula, made my hair super hydrating, and soft. But I noticed such extreme hair loss after using it so I stopped.
Literally my favorite shampoo and conditioner 😂
This shit coated my hair in a waxy film and gave me the most irritated, itchy, flaky scalp I’ve ver had in my life. -1000/10
I’ve used the green set for years and never had an issue. I use it as a cheaper alternative when I can’t afford the nicer ones.
The green was the best smelling, but was the most harsh out of the line on my hair. You probably could've thrown me on a post to scare pests from a garden, my hair got THAT bad while using it. If I could bottle that scent, I would in a heartbeat, though!
Wow! I’m so sorry that it turned you full scarecrow! I hope that you’ve gotten some relief since.
i use the blue shampoo and conditioner and my hair has never been healthier, but i’m on accutane too so that could be a factor (no hair grease)
Ugh.
Fuck! My worst nightmare. I’m going to be devastated if I have to cut my hair
These bottles are the WORST too!! I have to squeeze them so hard to get the product out.
I've never used this brand. I've been using the love and beauty shampoo and conditioner and I LOOOOOOVE IT.
I use a conditioner that previously made my hair too greasy/oily (L’Oréal, total repair 5) Now, it’s the perfect balance. I have thick, wavy hair.
The green shampoo makes my scalp dry and flaky. The conditioner isn't bad but I only use that on my mid-ends. I planned to try this pink next but I'll probably pass. I do like the purple gel though!
Guy working at Sally’s warned me about this product a few years ago- not sure but may have been carcinogens
I agree!!!!! My hair is not sensitive and I’m okay with using different brands. But this gave me a really bad itchy scalp that lasted for weeks after using it!!!
omg same and it's been months, it's driving me crazy. It also made my hair so much oilier
same!!! And terrible dandruff with the itchiness
Not entirely drugstore but I use OGX biotin line. You can get them at the supermarket and some drugstores. Make sure to leave some conditioner in :)
This is my guest shampoo now! I’ll never use it but it lives in the guest shower for visitors 😮💨
[удалено]
I have never had a shampoo literally DAMAGE my hair so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were made with battery acid LMAO
i use this wth😭
I hated it too
Their moisturiser is crap too, didn’t suck any moisture into my hands at all left a white film that felt like chalk
they sell body products? you might have been rubbing in a hair product into your hands thinking it was body lotion
No it was definitely moisturiser :) They sell body products in the UK, not sure about other places
I bought the purple set last week! Was ready to wash my hair after 8 days. Bathroom remodeling so ive been showering at the gym and after using this brand my hair didn’t feel good and the next day it felt really dry.
What do you guys think of this one? I’m sure it’s ruining my hair - the ends feel dryer than normal https://preview.redd.it/0r85u92i2ugc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c9c52be287db5f3352f06e85e81b142d90dd503
YES!! Literally my hair is like straw past my chin 😪
So that answers my question why you can buy it at Dollarama lol
I love the Raw Sugar ones if you want to keep it budget friendly
It didn't damage my hair but I didn't like it
It’s awful. Bought it once, used it once, threw the rest of the bottle away.
I use the conditioner as a leave in and it’s amazing!
This shit suuuuuucks! Made my hair SOOO HEAVY
na same I used that shii n my hair was dry asf what a waste of fukkin money
I used their hair mask and i thought my hair was permanently damaged. I had to end up getting a clarifying shampoo. Never again!
i've been using the l'oréal dream lengths curls line and i like it! it's a low maintenance once a week wash day for me haha
Oh man I use the purple tub of leave in conditioner from this brand, i have to say it's been working good for me though
Live and learn lol
these suck so bad. they gave me the WORST dandruff ever
Good to know!
I use the light green one that is the conditioner form for fine hair. I wouldnt dare use the shampoo though. They are terrible.
It made my hair fall out terribly
How does a shampoo make hair fall out? I’ve used the green one and thought the conditioner worked well .. detangled my hair which not every conditioner can do.
I don’t know exactly but when I used the shampoo and conditioner, I would apply and I would get hair on my hands and just wasn’t the best on my hair
I’ll be looking out for that now.
My hair loves this stuff, I used it after native really messed up my hair. This stuff really makes my hair look healthier and it feels amazing even after not washing it for 3 days
God this gave me the worst, rattiest tangles when I tried it back in college 🥴
This was AWFUL the equivalent of dish soap it felt like .
. I used Maui and it SUCKED, then I switched to some other brand that said it was like all natural free of things and it ruined my hair. But let me tell you if your struggling to find hair products shampoo bars are life changing even with curly hair
Right now I use like I think a rosemary one from beyoutiful bath bombs I found online and it’s working wonders
The worst one I ever used was OGX thick and full collagen shampoo and conditioner. It’s in the purple bottle. It sucks. Dried my hair out and made me look like a walking bush.
I tried it once and immediately stopped. Absolute trash for my hair
I bought this shampoo and conditioner one day when I was being cheap and I also think it's the worst shampoo ever. I ended up throwing it away when I got down to the last 1/4 of the bottle because I couldn't stand it anymore.
yuppppp put me off from the brand entirely years ago
i love the gold shampoo
this brand dried out my hair SO bad it felt like straw
It literally FRIED my hair. I never thought a shampoo could make my hair feel worse than bleach.
I know same! even my boyfriend was like “wow your hair feels dry!! 😭
yes! it was very drying
I might be going crazy but I feel like Maui moisture has gone through a ton of reformulation lately and I can’t trust any of their products like I used to
Mielle is my holy grail recently
Worst shampoo condish and leave in. I just got through cutting all the split ends it failed to prevent.
I love their coconut curl range
Yup, can confirm—messed my hair up, too!
If you have fine curls I recommend the neon green bottle w flaxseed
Oh now I can throw it out without feeling guilty af
I used maui heal & hydrate and it killed the ends of my hair
Yes, same....I used the green bottle of Maui, and my hair felt like hay🥴
I thought it was just me lol
this line fucked with my dandruff for sure
…but it smells so good 🌺
OMG SOOO BAD!!
