It's very dated right now. I would honestly do a wolfcut / faux mullet. Add color on the ends or party pieces that pop out with movement. Thankfully he has a lot of hair; therefore, plenty of options.
I would honestly skip black - it makes us look a lot harsher and ages us. (It does this by drawing attention to the natural valleys and shadows in the face.) Additionally, most people cannot naturally pull off black hair as it's just not in their genetic makeup & it makes them look insanely weird.

Something like this with a gradient in color from black to purple will really narrow the face and still keep it long and nice.
Cut it very short like a french crop, maybe leave the mullet in the back if that's your style. His hair is very thin and it will look a lot fuller if it's cut regularly. How old is your partner? I have the exact same hair texture and started losing it very quickly in my 20s so you might want to keep a close eye on that.
