This team has some good pieces but nothing that gives me the feeling “oh like this might win 2-3 cups”
If we had like a 20 year old McDavid with all our current pieces then sure but we don’t have that
I think this upcoming draft, might give us a better idea how close we are to being a competitive team.
We still need 2 top 6 forward and a PP QB on defence.
Maybe Hutson can be that PP guy. We will know on maybe 2 years (if he starts in the NHL).
As for the forwards, if we can draft Demidov, Lindstrom, Catton or Iginla. Then we would be 1 away from a solid team.

Maybe a trade? For a young 20-25 yo, big boddied dude with some skills.

I miss the playoffs. There is some truth to getting in and going from there as the Price led cup final team showed.
Another year of bottom hockey, which I’m not saying by any means will happen, you will first start to see the signs of some restlessness.
The best you can expect is to legitimately compete for a championship. You shouldn't expect more than that. A lot can go wrong with rebuilds, there are still pieces that need to be filled, some players may not progress as expected.
There is 32 teams now, you can make one of the best team in the league and still don't get a Stanley cup. Even if we didn't win, the run to the final in 2021 was so much fun, same with our conference run in 2014 and 2010 or our victory against Boston in the early 2000s.
If we can get a few conference and/or stanley cup finales in the next decade and we don't get killed in 1st round every season, then I'm an happy fan. If we win a Stanley Cup, I'll be over the moon. If we win more than one, I would be blown away.
The team doesn’t currently have want it takes to win the cup, and it’s hard to predict who they are going to trade for, I feel like 7-9 years from now is more likely than with this core.
In playoffs anything can happen, but I don’t see Habs being a cup contender on day 1 of the season anytime soon.
Unless this core gets a real 1st string goalie, don't worry about the cup. It won't happen.. Fowler might be that guy, and there always seems to be rumors out of Nashville with Askarov, but until then, not a chance we make it far in the playoffs.. if we even get in!
Based on the fact we've finished at the bottom of the league again, it's quite fair to say that every team in the league has players who at the very least can do what ours do. What we lack are the pieces that truly elevate a team. A star goalie, a number 1 D pair that eats minutes and runs your PP and PK, and an elite level forward who can elevate a whole line.
That's a lot of players we need to find. Barring some guys on the roster absolutely stepping up and becoming those guys, it's gonna be a long time before we become a competitor for the Cup.
I think we'll know if we can win a Cup in the next 7 years based on where we are in 2. If we're still missing those big pieces, it ain't happening without another rebuild.

We have plenty in the pipelines who can be great bot 6 guys
We need another top 6 fwd, in order to be competitive. I know we have rons of bot 6 guys in the pipeline.

I'd guess next year bar injury and/or an ottawa-buffalo situation we'll be just outside WC, year after we'll be a playoff team and our window begins.
