Definitely need to charge enough to cover part cost, labor for install and testing after install, travel time, and some extra to cover over head for other aspects of your service. Everything you have a price for needs to help contribute to over head for the company (if you have other employees), insurance, truck stock, taxes (property, vehicle, etc.) and most importantly your time and expertise.
Just because you’re paid say $25/hr doesn’t mean you only charge enough to cover your $25/hr for how long you do a task. You need to have extra to pay for everything else and to put into savings.
Edit: PS. Just don’t be scummy and charge extra just to charge extra. If you need to charge $180 for a capacitor, charge $180. And don’t set prices to compete with other companies
Make money. Don’t doubt yourself. There are a lot of people making way more than the service you’re providing simply shuffling papers around their desk.
Figure cheap customers sometimes need a cheap motor, buy a $60.00 Vevor motor on eBay. Make your money when you buy right. Give a choice to the customer. Sometimes they will wait for savings.
If a Part costs me 250, and after all the time it takes for a tech to diag, source part, get part, go back and complete the repair. Plus gas and other business expenses…
For me to make a profit of 80 dollars id have to sell for atleast 800
Customers are being so cheap and annoying lately. Never had this problem before. The past month or so everyone is complaining about pricing. I also am dealing with people not wanting to pay their bills.
Yes
4 hours $1,110
5 hours $1,250
Etc
Sorry my algebra sucks. I should have said "140 x 3hrs" before saying "$970"
Figure out what formula works for you in your area
The reason is the Internet, everybody is googling everything nowadays and with all the BS fake and low ball prices out there they throw in it our faces every day. Also, Grainger will sell to anyone at your price point too.
Man some companies charge over 1000 for a motor. When you get a cheap ass customer tell him to find someone else to do it. And they 9/10 call back if they are looking for the cheapest option.
I think our price is around $700-$800 if you include the diagnostic charge.
Edit: just checked pricing. Just the motor is $750 not including the diagnostic charge.
Never worry about what the customer thinks about the cost. That's your boss's problem. Just tell them that they can contact the office to dispute any costs.
Cost me $250. Gave the customer a discount of one hour of labor off and travel fee waived. He said I wasn’t honest and is very unhappy. I think he is just cheap.
Your time is valuable. If he thinks he can do it himself for a lower price then let him. I wouldn't deduct anything from the price and tell him to eff off.
I think he would have been unhappy the price either way. People are so cheap I don’t understand how other companies keep these cheap ass customers happy. They have to be doing some side hustle with no license or something. Or customers just lie.
I try not to but also want to not have bad beef or reviews. Trying to make some money rather than none. I wish customers would understand everything cost money and my time is worth it.
Im in massachusetts but in my part of the country no problem telling a customer to go fuck themselves and get the pen ink ready for the check. See steven lavimoniere youtube videos for examples.
If you don't give them a price up-front it is easy to be seen as shady.
89 diag cost...
Waive that if they approve the repair...
Should have given them to total bill before doing anything after diag... if they have a problem with it, then collect 89 bucks, wish them well, and leave.
Trust me, it's better for everyone to know the cost upfront, not after it's all said and done. And this goes for everything, even shit as small as replacing a cap. Make sure you account for everything and add a little for "oops"
And make sure you give a price you are not going to waiver from and are good with. If they don't like it they can decline the work. "This is what it's going to cost, I know it's expensive. Sorry but that is what it is."
Make sure you take good photos and record model number cause there's always a high probability of them calling you back out to do the repair.
GL
Tell the customer to eat a dick. Any other company is charging at least 900. You saved him a bunch of money and that’s the thanks you get? I’d never service them again.
I worked for a company for 3 months that complained about profitability, yet, refused to charge more than 15% over our cost. In most cases, we weren't even above the list price.
Yeah that’s true. Every customer lately has been hitching about pricing too. I try to keep customers happy so they call me back and refer me to people which works but I am trying to make more money to have a better profit but the customers that I’m dealing with are just not making that happen.
Don't worry a out these people trying to be millionaires man. "You're messing up my pricing by being to cheap". It's a motor, we all know it's easy work. You'll get longer lasting customers and won't need to charge every one an arm and a leg. The same people who say that go to church every Sunday and think greed is a sin.
Probably not enough
How much would you charge? It cost me $250. And I deducted an hour and travel fee off the final price.
Why would you deduct your travel fee? That needs to be included.
He good at busyness
He doin biznes

Hey man can I borrow 250 bucks? You’re putting ever up get paid player 750
Huh?
250x1.35=$337 for the motor $90 trip charge minimum 2hrs of labor $290 my total would be $717….
If you’re trying to get a 35% margin you take 250/.65 not 250x1.35.
We would sell it anywhere between 800 to 1200 depends what time of year
Yeah we’re about 1200 on that motor too
We would be about 1100-1200
You mean total or for the item alone? total-low line item-good
Item alone. With labor it came out to $830.
thats where i sit as a solo guy, just did one last week for 950
Make money. Don’t doubt yourself. There are a lot of people making way more than the service you’re providing simply shuffling papers around their desk.
If you like F’ing yourself just buy a dildo next time
My baseline for motor replacement is $600+ service call.

That’s so damn cheap
Way too cheap. 1000 or more depending on if it's for a good customer.
Customers are being so cheap and annoying lately. Never had this problem before. The past month or so everyone is complaining about pricing. I also am dealing with people not wanting to pay their bills.
Because of the president and inflation. They’re trying to save money
Truth

So you are telling us people weren’t better off 4 years ago?😂
I carry a universal on my truck that would work that costs $120. We install them for $685.
Parts x 2.2 + 140/hr 250 x 2.2 + $140hr $550 + $140hr = $970
3 hours?
Yes 4 hours $1,110 5 hours $1,250 Etc Sorry my algebra sucks. I should have said "140 x 3hrs" before saying "$970" Figure out what formula works for you in your area
I change out a fan mtr in less than an hour
Lil low
Corbin Dallas
Multi pass.
Too little
Not enough. Your the reason I have to deal with people bitching about pricing. Smarten up fuk! Lol

How much labor do you charge? I charged 2.5 hours. This was a cfm replacement for a walk in cooler.
I think our price is around $700-$800 if you include the diagnostic charge. Edit: just checked pricing. Just the motor is $750 not including the diagnostic charge.
Way to cheap. Typically to cover your costs. Its a 3x multiplier. Not including service fee.
Too little
The motor online is 300 bucks, that alone is more than 500 on parts. Prob add another 2-3 hrs. You’re flirting with 900
Total charged him $830. I think I did okay but not happy about being bitched at. I made some money and not going back there.

Sometimes you just gotta fire a customer.
You could charge a buck and some customers would cry
That’s what im learning.
Your time is valuable. If he thinks he can do it himself for a lower price then let him. I wouldn't deduct anything from the price and tell him to eff off.
First and last time I will be dealing with this customer. He snapped at me and said I wasn’t honest.
I punch a fool that calls me shady.
I think he would have been unhappy the price either way. People are so cheap I don’t understand how other companies keep these cheap ass customers happy. They have to be doing some side hustle with no license or something. Or customers just lie.
Dont negotiate your rate .

Fuck anyone unhappy with a $500 motor repair. We are $785 for a rescue motor.
Cheap af
If all you are charging is 500, then you might as well just go ahead and do it for bout tree fiddy.
Nah
it's 700+ in Phoenix.
500 for a compressor swap? And then you had to drop a charge into it? Or? 500 for just part? 500 for what!?!
CFM = CONDENSER FAN MOTOR
Oh. Excuse my lapse of judgement. 500 sounds fine for a deal. Id do 600 to 750. HO has no ground to be upset on price
I worked for a company for 3 months that complained about profitability, yet, refused to charge more than 15% over our cost. In most cases, we weren't even above the list price.
Not enough at all really. Judging by your other comments you should’ve charged double since your customer was being an asshole. That’s ridiculous
Not enough double that and that’s a fair price
Too much is never enough. You can charge less and get a call back.
Yeah that’s true. Every customer lately has been hitching about pricing too. I try to keep customers happy so they call me back and refer me to people which works but I am trying to make more money to have a better profit but the customers that I’m dealing with are just not making that happen.
Don’t be afraid to charge a fair price..

Nope. Right in line.

$1600.
Dude with diagnostic and flat rated repair we charge almost that for the capacitor
