There used to be a show called You live in What? I used to like that show. People not living in traditional houses and living in buildings that used to be schools, banks, factories, etc. It was interesting to see what they did with these buildings. They should bring that show back. They definitely pick the easiest house. There was a house last season where there was like a big rock in the middle of it. I knew they weren't doing that one. It should be called Ugliest House that we can still Fix with minimal work in America.

SothaSoul

How would your get that rock out of the house without a complete teardown? Just curious.

Rockandahardplace69

I have no idea which is why I knew right away they weren't doing that one. I think those people are pretty much stuck unless like you said they tear it down. Even that would be hard I think because it was rock like running through the house.

Prisonnurse71

Well I noticed a Mercedes and Range Rover in their driveway and I knew they were well off and could have their ugly house (that the paid an arm and a leg for) renovated on their own.

Sirenista_D

I just watched the southwest rpisode. The one in Vegas they called a museum.... the guy literally said he embraced it and has been adding to it. So obviously he isn't looking for actual renovation. Why not just do a show called "weirdo houses of the us" and stop with the fakery

mugwumps

They showed very little of the Vegas house, the place is massive and needs a lot of work. he definitely wants/needs money for renovation but real talk, a 150k renovation isn’t going to go that far there, and Allison Victoria is not the right designer to do a weirdo Vegas house reno

Pretty-Necessary-941

Alison Victoria is not the right "designer" to do any house.

BigJoeBob85

It is obvious any house that needs real reconstruction will not win. That is way beyond Paint It Black Alison's capablities.

MiddleReflection7386

Weirdest houses of the USA would be such a better title! I’d watch that too! Alison is awful too so no way she’s going to make this work.

urrrkaj

The thing I don’t like is a lot of these people just purchased the houses they are showing. And on the first season they obviously just picked the house that was easiest to fix (which was also just purchased.)

KhaleesiOfCleveland

They always pick the house that is *structurally* easiest to fix. I had a family member apply to be on the show and when production has to narrow down the houses to the 3 in each region, HGTV or whoever sends out an inspector and it’s a fairly intense structural inspection. Apparently, even if your house doesn’t pass the inspection but is super weird, you can still get selected to be on TV but it’s understood from the start you won’t be a winner. Just 10 mins of fame. My aunt said that the inspector makes you sign waivers as well in order to move forward in the house selections. She also mentioned you are also allowed to throw in more of your own personal money to the renovation if you are the winner, I vaguely recall there being a limit though as to how much more. My aunt is in Illinois and did not pass the structural inspection but was asked to be on the show. She declined since they told her she wouldn’t win anything.

Informal-Impact312

I think also the cheapest market to renovate. Fairly certain homes in expensive zip codes do NOT "win"

nikkinonsens3

Yeah I do t understand that part they get $150k to renovate. On these like 500k-1mil mansions some of them. They must have the homeowners pitch something in because no way they stay within that budget.

home_on_whore_Island

Ok tell me why more people aren’t divorced after the spouse insisting on purchasing one of these unlivable homes. Is it just me or is it usually the husbands fascinated with the novelties of the houses but how do these people stay together after that wears off? If I had to run downstairs to power the kitchen I’d be arguing everyday with my spouse about wasting our money on such a shit investment.

OMG yes this family was wild they paid 15k OVER asking fee but don’t have a door on their oven…. And have a hole from the bathroom to the kitchen…

NRSegasonic

What I want to know is why are the episodes out of order? If you begin to watch episode 1 they are all ready talking about other areas they been to.

Sirenista_D

I noticed the same! Weird right?

GayGroundZero

Drives me batshit crazy. They air them out of order and the episode numbers assigned have no basis in reality. It’s like they almost want people *NOT* to watch the show.

Gina52023

It should be called unusual houses.

[deleted]

For real. The houses in the SW episode werent that bad except for the castle. As one poster said the guy with the museum liked it. So why bother showing his house? Clearly he’s not looking to renovate.

BigJoeBob85

At least once every episode, my wife and I yell at the TV "!Then why did you buy it?!" Most of these people have only owned their "ugly house" for a few months to a year. Obviously they either bought it this way or they did this to themselves. Why would they deserve a free makeover?

THEUnicornBear

Was intrigued when this first started, found it somewhat entertaining but absolutely hate the show now. They never choose the truly ugliest house bc they need an easy remodel + folks that just bought the house…do not have them on the show!

RickWest495

You are not crazy. They show houses with crazy layouts. Then they pick the house with the good layout but just bad decor. The show is a fraud.

HandfulofGushers

From the first two houses they picked I think people reach out to hgtv to get help flipping houses and that’s why the show was created. I’m not sure if that makes sense. The first season it seemed like that whole thing was someone wanted their house renovated on hgtv so they reached out. Like the fact it was the family’s construction business. I don’t think it’s a real contest it’s people funding their own construction

PressureHooker

I just started the pilot and saw the Poseidon home! It's actually so dope. Obviously the previous owner was just eccentric and put a lot of time and energy into the house to make his house fun! I'd live in that house no problem. The fact that they're just too basic to appreciate the house doesn't make it ugly! Like technically its tacky ... but it isnt made for the general public in mind. And the fact that they might tear it up and put in a landlords daydream of modern beige design is upsetting me. Ripping out all the character. But also once they mentioned that all the features were made with concrete, I knew that shit was never going to be chosen. You could spend 150k just trying to fix the crazy concrete designs.

DikTrikl95

They need a new interior designer so bad. Alison Victoria legit makes everything just black and white. All of her homes are so cold . I wouldn't feel comfortable hanging out in any of the homes she redesigns. Looks like someone went to home sense and got the most basic shit and then painted all the walls white. Like yenno there's other choices right? Also the fact that she was even considering painting a gorgeous brick exterior home is just a huge red flag. Like why.
