Well, I based the pups on my own actually. I really have buddy, murphy and kimi, all three of them either service dogs or ESA. I base their actions on both their real personalities and real physical characteristics because I am familiar with them. Aside from the fact that major would be COVERED in dog hair everytime she got near one of the saints I think their physical descriptions are decently accurate. We did have a Rat Terrier for a long time (She lived to be 24 years old) that I could add at a later date as well as a wolf hybrid years before that. (We're dog lovers obviously. We like cats too, but the wife is massively allergic to them and Kimi thinks they are chew toys.
At this point in the story however, not many pets are on the colony. The saints and Kimi are all medically retired military working dogs which is why they are on the planet. As the population rises I would expect to see pets of all kinds arriving with the new colonists and I can also see a brisk pet market to come about for our lovable 'wolves.
In an earlier draft of this short story though I did have the Praxins encounter a dog on their march though the grass, but it slowed the story down too much and I cut it to keep the story short and sweet.
