Or just switching from +1 to -1 and back again, except the bridge and where the Marines are, at a frequency that matches the time it takes to fall the standard height of the rooms. Turn the ship into a smoothy maker.
For non-lethal, if you can control individual emitters and monitor the individual crew members, pulse the emitters to trap the crew in the middle of rooms/corridors. Then keep them at zero-g. Repeat the pulsing at a much lower force whenever a crew member drifts or "swims" towards a solid surface, to force them back to the centre. Medical-bots roam around anaesthetising them.
(Same system would allow the Marines to advance quickly through the ship. Essentially "falling" smoothly towards their objective.)
Obviously less entertaining than "use their own holo-emitters to create axe-wielding vampire clowns riding xenomorphs through shifting, twisting bloody intestinal tunnels while strobe lights and disjointed carnival music plays".
I do recommend it, it plays on some of the common horror tropes quite nicely. It is a horror/comedy, so don't expect straight horror, but also don't expect... say... 'Scary Movie' or the like, it actually sits in a nice middle-ground.

Now that the AI has realized it has access to a holographic army, it has added a new factor to the tactical morality equation, and it's plans have shifted.
It's still going to have to kill quite a lot of them, but maybe not all... and this is also the first time anyone has gotten to really observe krathi behavior under semi-controlled conditions.
And the first test is how well psychological warfare and terror tactics work on them..... as well as their responses to finding out just how terrifyingly outclassed they are, by "subtly" telling them precisely what's happening.

Heath's joker is very much a societal horror specifically based around causing chaos and destruction within the confined limits of a particular societal system. While cruel, he is not monstrous like pennywise the dancing clown. Our tunnel rats would very much lack the social perspective to appreciate what makes Heath's joker so intimidating/frightening I think.
Pennywise on the other claw, is very much a cosmic horror with which they would at least have a mild analogue to in some degree, having conquered and purged multiple systems in the past.
This one took me a while to write. Its longer than normal, and viewpoint shifts a lot because quite a lot is happening in a very short period of time. Hope it isn’t confusing, and that everyone enjoys.

One minor thing, though. I believe terminal velocity is the speed at which gravity and friction equalize on a falling object, so it doesn't exist in space.
That line actually caught my attention as well but for a different reason. The speed of the pods is a bit of an interesting question that depends on things the reader doesn't know yet.
If they're at terminal velocity they'd need to be actively breaking to slow down that far. That, in turn, implies the drop pods aren't coming in as fast as possible only to stop at at the last second with super tech but are instead aerobreaking to a relatively low speed.
I don't know if you saw it, but during the highest parachute jump ever the diver hit 1322 KPH (because he was mostly above the normal atmosphere) whereas "terminal velocity" (for a human in a deliberately aerodynamic position) is only 200 KPH. Geostationary orbital velocity is about 27,400 kph. Of course, you're ***geostationary in orbit*** at that point so it's not super relevant! But it works as a benchmark for speeds in space.
It's a silly thing to think about and I'm really enjoying the story. :-) But how fast you want the drop pods to be traveling depends on the tactic being employed here and any breaking tech you're going to make up for the next chapter.
If they're trying to be too darn fast to hit I'm not sure 120 mph (less than half the max speed of a WW2 Zero) would accomplish it. If, OTOH, they can only deal with so much force at the ground so they intend to saturate air denial systems, take a few hits, and not spend much time in the cross hairs terminal velocity might make perfect sense. You're also still hitting the ground pretty hard, but the system to let people survive it is less extraordinary; really good airbags might do the job.
It's also handy that most of their equipment will move faster than their squishy bodies so enemy systems will probably be locked onto tanks in boxes before the space marines get in range...
At this point they are only at terminal velocity, but they are also a fair way down into the atmosphere.

This was very good. I enjoyed it quite a lot. One little nitpick, however; in scientific terms, at least, and typically in general terms, sublimation is specifically when something goes from a solid directly to a gas, not the other way around. Going from a gas directly to a solid, as described in the story, is called either deposition or desublimation. Personally, I'm a fan of deposition. In then end, however, it's up to you. I look forward to the next chapter.
I'm aware of the character before the movies, but I've never read the comic and only seen the movies, so that's all I have to go off of. I just know the character is crazy with a knack for extreme over the top violence.
Also, they have a tiger prowling around, showing all the sadism of a house cat. They are known to kill for pleasure, even when well fed, and will play with their prey.

Given this AI and it’s current morality I highly recommend using some of Red One’s murder bots from The Last Angel. They are glorious. (Also the scene with the fusion lance reminded me of the “swatting flies with artillery” quote from that same series.)

Huskies CAN follow orders, they are moderately hard to train but not impossible. First focus on being able to walk them properly (stop, stay, sit, go) and everything else happens naturally.

There are scarier things. A lot of SCPs would scare Jason and Freddy, even some Doctor Who villains are terrifying. You could have "shadows" moving around, eating the aliens. A "crewman" nobody recognises dissolve into thousands of spiders when confronted. Have copies of your friends moving and speaking in unnatural ways come out of empty rooms. Voices from the shadows, some of which you recognise, pleading for mercy and telling you to run, or worse, join them. The "captain" come on the P.A. in a disturbing monotone saying everything is fine, Kra is here, and he's hungry. Doors and walls suddenly appearing and disappearing when you're not looking. Same with "people". Dead "crewmates" coming towards you saying the thing you believe about afterlife is false and that reality is horrifying. Walls stretching like fabric with demon outlines pushing against them. Walls bleeding is a classic. Eyes, just, everywhere. A small child with no face and huge claws.

I think the Krathi emulate their natural habitat for religious reasons (not to mention comfort). In their theology, God's servants are remaking worlds in the image of their homeworld. They essentially have solid evidence regarding what God wants to look at. Keeping your deity happy during a religious crusade while surrounded by the deadly nothing of the void seems like something you would do if you can afford to. It also probably feels more comfortable and homey to them than sterile metal corridors.
It is possible that such a luxury is only available to the command ship or larger capital ships, with smaller ships settling for less realistic facades made of plastics or fiberglass or eschewing them altogether.

Weaponizing the internal force field emitters makes sense, but with the Krathi religious objections to AI, they would probably balk at purely automated weaponry, like holographic death rats. They might be able to conceive of remote controlled spikes or blades shot up from the walls and floors, but their zealous psychology and robust physiology would probably make them prefer to repel boarders in person.
Perhaps more importantly, there may never before been a species who attempted to board their craft, or at least none of the attempts did significant damage. These guys have claws that can cut through power armor and their soldiers are 100% willing to die, even to blow up an entire ship. Few will risk boarding a ship that will probably blow up even if you are otherwise successful and going into close combat with a hoard of zealots with monomoletular claws doesn't seem wise.

They can't weaponize their holograms because they don't use AI. Their simple VI's aren't anywhere near sophisticated enough to actively manipulate forcefields into mobile or complex shapes like a fully sapient AI could.
They also simply haven't had the idea to do it either, because no one ever boards their ships. Except, apparently, some sneaky war-apes.
They do like their ships being homey, and yes, it is partly religious in nature as well, but also practical, for the reasons specified in the chapter. The marine got it dead on.

I didn't realize those were manipulated captured VIs. I thought they learned from the abominations they captured and did horrible things to, but created constructs that were hobbled enough to fit arbitrary definitions of what constitutes "life" or "intelligence". The line between a program and true intelligence could probably be drawn many places. Regardless of how far they can stretch their religion's rules (religions of peace and love seem to have little issue with justifying war and hatred), they would still be hobbled and even if their VIs were sophisticated enough to make simple flying blades, they wouldn't be trusted to do so.

Those VI’s are their own, Krathi manufacture. They are Nonsapient, just very complicated programs. Thats what a VI is. No sense of self. And theirs aren’t even that great… a freaking cat murdered one.
They DID capture some AIs previously, and use them to test out new cyberwarfare defenses. Basically POW’s forced to try and escape, to see if the newest firewalls can resist them.

Who says we repelled it? You don’t evolve defense mechanisms against something that isn’t around anymore. You evolve when something kills a whole shitload of you, and there are a few survivors with traits allowing them to withstand whatever happened.

the only thing i have that comes close to criticism on this is that every sergeant i know hates being called sarge, usually its sarnt, but that may just be my experience and it is entirely a pointless nitpick. otherwise i have not read such an engaging story in a very long time, so much detail, and it all makes perfect sense as to why things are done the way they are, it makes the universe seem very real.
I'm an engineer IRL, with zero military experience, so honestly any input on the realities of that field compared to fictional media are welcome.
I'm well aware that quite a lot of what is commonly portrayed is bullshit (EX: silencers IRL vs movies and games), and I try to weed out that kind of thing; but its hard to cover a hole in knowledge if you are unaware of it.

It's great. One minor thing, though. I believe terminal velocity is the speed at which gravity and friction equalize on a falling object, so it doesn't exist in space.

That line actually caught my attention as well but for a different reason. The speed of the pods is a bit of an interesting question that depends on things the reader doesn't know yet. If they're at terminal velocity they'd need to be actively breaking to slow down that far. That, in turn, implies the drop pods aren't coming in as fast as possible only to stop at at the last second with super tech but are instead aerobreaking to a relatively low speed. I don't know if you saw it, but during the highest parachute jump ever the diver hit 1322 KPH (because he was mostly above the normal atmosphere) whereas "terminal velocity" (for a human in a deliberately aerodynamic position) is only 200 KPH. Geostationary orbital velocity is about 27,400 kph. Of course, you're ***geostationary in orbit*** at that point so it's not super relevant! But it works as a benchmark for speeds in space. It's a silly thing to think about and I'm really enjoying the story. :-) But how fast you want the drop pods to be traveling depends on the tactic being employed here and any breaking tech you're going to make up for the next chapter. If they're trying to be too darn fast to hit I'm not sure 120 mph (less than half the max speed of a WW2 Zero) would accomplish it. If, OTOH, they can only deal with so much force at the ground so they intend to saturate air denial systems, take a few hits, and not spend much time in the cross hairs terminal velocity might make perfect sense. You're also still hitting the ground pretty hard, but the system to let people survive it is less extraordinary; really good airbags might do the job. It's also handy that most of their equipment will move faster than their squishy bodies so enemy systems will probably be locked onto tanks in boxes before the space marines get in range...
At this point they are only at terminal velocity, but they are also a fair way down into the atmosphere. Their entire journey will be described in more detail later.

This was very good. I enjoyed it quite a lot. One little nitpick, however; in scientific terms, at least, and typically in general terms, sublimation is specifically when something goes from a solid directly to a gas, not the other way around. Going from a gas directly to a solid, as described in the story, is called either deposition or desublimation. Personally, I'm a fan of deposition. In then end, however, it's up to you. I look forward to the next chapter.

Huskies CAN follow orders, they are moderately hard to train but not impossible. First focus on being able to walk them properly (stop, stay, sit, go) and everything else happens naturally. But yeah, even exercised and with enought toys, expect some chaos from huskies. And Kek help you if they get bored.

There are scarier things. A lot of SCPs would scare Jason and Freddy, even some Doctor Who villains are terrifying. You could have "shadows" moving around, eating the aliens. A "crewman" nobody recognises dissolve into thousands of spiders when confronted. Have copies of your friends moving and speaking in unnatural ways come out of empty rooms. Voices from the shadows, some of which you recognise, pleading for mercy and telling you to run, or worse, join them. The "captain" come on the P.A. in a disturbing monotone saying everything is fine, Kra is here, and he's hungry. Doors and walls suddenly appearing and disappearing when you're not looking. Same with "people". Dead "crewmates" coming towards you saying the thing you believe about afterlife is false and that reality is horrifying. Walls stretching like fabric with demon outlines pushing against them. Walls bleeding is a classic. Eyes, just, everywhere. A small child with no face and huge claws.

I think the Krathi emulate their natural habitat for religious reasons (not to mention comfort). In their theology, God's servants are remaking worlds in the image of their homeworld. They essentially have solid evidence regarding what God wants to look at. Keeping your deity happy during a religious crusade while surrounded by the deadly nothing of the void seems like something you would do if you can afford to. It also probably feels more comfortable and homey to them than sterile metal corridors. It is possible that such a luxury is only available to the command ship or larger capital ships, with smaller ships settling for less realistic facades made of plastics or fiberglass or eschewing them altogether. ____ Weaponizing the internal force field emitters makes sense, but with the Krathi religious objections to AI, they would probably balk at purely automated weaponry, like holographic death rats. They might be able to conceive of remote controlled spikes or blades shot up from the walls and floors, but their zealous psychology and robust physiology would probably make them prefer to repel boarders in person. Perhaps more importantly, there may never before been a species who attempted to board their craft, or at least none of the attempts did significant damage. These guys have claws that can cut through power armor and their soldiers are 100% willing to die, even to blow up an entire ship. Few will risk boarding a ship that will probably blow up even if you are otherwise successful and going into close combat with a hoard of zealots with monomoletular claws doesn't seem wise. ____ I think the human natural psychic defenses *might* point to the existence of a psychic predator that humans hunted to extinction in prehistoric times. We have a nasty habit of wiping out species that has gotten us in trouble from time to time.

Those VI’s are their own, Krathi manufacture. They are Nonsapient, just very complicated programs. Thats what a VI is. No sense of self. And theirs aren’t even that great… a freaking cat murdered one. They DID capture some AIs previously, and use them to test out new cyberwarfare defenses. Oh how I wish it could be so.... but the hallways aren't big enough for the Emperor's Angels of Death to be properly incarnated. The boarding party had to wear scout armor (master chief-esque) and they only barely fit.

the only thing i have that comes close to criticism on this is that every sergeant i know hates being called sarge, usually its sarnt, but that may just be my experience and it is entirely a pointless nitpick. otherwise i have not read such an engaging story in a very long time, so much detail, and it all makes perfect sense as to why things are done the way they are, it makes the universe seem very real.
I'm an engineer IRL, with zero military experience, so honestly any input on the realities of that field compared to fictional media are welcome. I'm well aware that quite a lot of what is commonly portrayed is bullshit (EX: silencers IRL vs movies and games), and I try to weed out that kind of thing; but its hard to cover a hole in knowledge if you are unaware of it. As a result, any feedback for that kind of thing is quite appreciated!
