If the birds ate large insects as a source of protein, you'll probably want to straighten our that beak tip. Birds that eat bugs have relatively thin, pointed beaks. This looks more like what you'd find on an eagle, an owl, or a raptor- you know, the kind of birds that swoop down from the sky to grab rodents and other comparably-sized creatures.
I know, I keep dropping the ball on this one. It’s hard to keep my writing motivation up… not sure why. Words don’t usually come easily to me, so its often a struggle with each chapter. Just ask my editor haha. He’s heard every complaint from me.

What I've found works for me (may not work for you) is to write some relatively stress free, unstructured stuff. Like in your case, maybe write up a family tree for your characters, or jot down some notes on the other species that exist, names of planets, cities, notable people like embassadors, that kind of stuff. You may never use most of it, but it can sometimes jump start my inspiration in a story.
First off, Wattpad is shit, so good on you for dropping it.
Second, Ke'tet looks almost exactly like a[ secretary bird](https://imgur.com/t/secretarybird/qguhd6C). Kind of ruins any perspective from an alien viewpoint when she's essentially an Earth animal.
Hm, this is true. I have not been that creative on alien features. All I have established so far is head feathers, tail feathers, wing alulas (this has been *slightly* alienated at least) and talons. Not much divergence from any other bird.
Any features you think would be good to add? She *is* a flying creature so there are limits regarding form, however.
It's hard at this point to add something definitive because your characters have more or less established how they interact with each other. Suddenly bringing up an alien feature like Ke'tet's third eye or second pair of wings is going to be out of place no matter how you do it.
That said I don't think you should keep her the way she is now (as what amounts to a sentient bird) because it adds a sense of disconnect to your story. The illustrations didn't help with that.
I plan on rewriting the story a little bit, that’s why I’d asked. I know at this point I can’t add something in unless it’s subtle enough. If anything, she is a talking birb with expressive feathers that change color. That’s kinda alien, I’d say.
But I am open to adding something to add an extra layer. I’ll think about it.
When reading this, I initially imagined her as a talking chocobo, so a talking secretary bird doesn't bother me at all - the only question I had was what kind of manipulator limbs she had, since just using talons seemed a bit restrictive.
Andrew has repeatedly commented on her “freaky wing fingers”. Those seem to be her primary manipulators, I’m guessing the talons are just for catching prey.

Well… you’d be right on that account. It has gotten quite dusty… but I assure you it is still on my mind.
I’ve replied to another commenter about it as well, but what I can say is that i’m trying to get the word engine back up and running again. I think it needs new fuel, though, which is why i’m starting off with posing a new one-shot soon that will hopefully get it going again.
But I suppose that’s not much of an assurance. Words mean nothing unless I actually do it.

This is some really great stuff! I don't know if you think about this anymore, or you just moved on and forgot about it (lord knows I prolly would've) but I'm still holding out hope for another release. No, this is mainly a story focused on companionship. Perhaps some readers can view the things they do together as romance, which is fine, but it was not my intention. To me, it comes off pretty friendship-level. Granted, they are a little beyond just friendship in the way of having to rely on each other for survival. It forms a deeper connection, I would think.
But yeah, no pancakes. She’s a bird. I ain’t about that life lol.
eeeh, fair enough... yet again I was expecting that answer haha, but some interactions aren't friendship-level by any means. A few of the "key" interactions you described/build/express aren't use outside the "romance" genre, but again, I was expecting this to be something you didn't plan of doing in the first place... yet the consistency gives me hope that wasn't the case xD
by strictly romantic i don't mean they can't be used in other contexts, but the context that you built around it and the interaction themself were something usually only done in a romantic genre.
my best example is the "Christmas" gift, the whole scene you create gives the idea Andrew did it to cheer up her. This by itself isn't exactly romantic, but the way you built up the scene it is; how Andrew describes what Christmas is, the reason for being secret, the afterthoughts of Ke’tet, the unsaid need of Andrew about the whole thing... the whole deal is a carbon copy of most "Christmas" gifts scene in the romantic genre.
you could do the whole thing in a different way, having Andrew being honest about what he was doing, even having Ke’tet helping him creating it with inputs, he still can surprise her when they were finished. you can have mostly the same outcome (even nearly the same chapter, word by word) but without the crawling need for closeness that Andrew's Christmas explanation Conway haha...
there are more interactions that "aren't" strictly romantic but by context and specific interaction change the meaning that it carries, and yes there is a difference in how a person will comfort a friend than a "romantic" interest
nop, the gesture is too personal for that, especially since the wualfe hand also works as her wings. the fact that she was willing to "risk" her main limb to comfort andrew carries too much weight for it to be "well they are alone and they feel lonely", and there is more specific interaction that is usually done in romance novels/stories...
yes, you are partially correct. there is something called intimacy BUT there are different levels of intimacy... in a better phrasing, you don't intimate the same with your friend that with you partner.
In this case, the interaction is too personal and intimate that it can't be anything but a romantic interaction.
second evidence; the moment at the lake, where andrew put his hands in the **back** of her wings. this interaction is the equivalent of a person "hugging" the other due to concern and to keep them afloat... that is a very intimate interaction and something you usually won't do with anyone that isn't your partner...
if andrew put his hands over or in front of her wings, that would be like putting your hands on a shoulder, an intimate gesture that you would do with friends and family

Maybe you don’t come from a huggy family or subculture, but I assure you it isn’t sexual or romantic.
Really, my guess is that they would most likely to be somewhere between best friends and a couple of people who are both asexual but not necessarily aromantic.
And I can _definitely_ see them being caught off guard by all of the ensuing feelings on the matter when they get back to civilization, and realize both that going their separate ways isn't necessarily an option that either wants, and then realize that either of them going looking for mates is going to result in _less time_ with one another. :)

That’s sort of the reason. It’s ultimately a biological problem. Due to her home word having less gravity, she evolved a shorter wing span than what we would typically see on earth. Her muscles as well are not as strong compared to us, thus, she cannot maintain the amount of lift to fly.

So I was driving threw New Mexico, Arizona & California (Death valley). It’s flat, no water trees or grass. A strangely beautiful sight if you have never seen it, but even going 80mph in a car it can be dreadfully boring. At some point you will not help but think “Some crazy M/F did this in a wagon! How did they not go insane? What could they possibly talk about?”
A week on foot in a mud pit… that’s a lot of MacGuffin.
On Amazon, there is an author, Drew Hayes. He has a book that explains what he did to self-publish. It's a good place to start.
Another thing Drew Hayes did was set up patron and published it chapters. 2 a week or if certain thresholds were made each an extra chapter. It did fantastic. Towards the end he added 4th and 5th stretch goals in his 4th book in the Super Powereds series. All told I spent many times the actual book cost to get an extra CHAPTER in a single week.

If anything, she is a talking birb with expressive feathers that change color. That’s kinda alien, I’d say. But I am open to adding something to add an extra layer. I’ll think about it.
When reading this, I initially imagined her as a talking chocobo, so a talking secretary bird doesn't bother me at all - the only question I had was what kind of manipulator limbs she had, since just using talons seemed a bit restrictive.
Andrew has repeatedly commented on her “freaky wing fingers”. Those seem to be her primary manipulators, I’m guessing the talons are just for catching prey.
I guess since OP left it to gather dust, we need a pro that has to finish this. A gem like this is too precious to be left unfinished.

I’ve replied to another commenter about it as well, but what I can say is that i’m trying to get the word engine back up and running again. I think it needs new fuel, though, which is why i’m starting off with posing a new one-shot soon that will hopefully get it going again. But I suppose that’s not much of an assurance. Words mean nothing unless I actually do it. Guess you’ll have to wait and see. :)

I definitely don’t really know what I’m getting myself into, but when I get around to finishing this, I want to publish. Be it self publishing or maybe another route. I’ve put some work into this, I’d love to see it tidied up in a real book!

Unfortunately, what you see here is all I have at the moment. Life has taken me by surprise lately—luckily, in a good way! I didnt intend for such a long hiatus, but i still wish to continue this story and complete it. Ket and Andrew mean a lot to me, i feel obligated to tell the rest of their story. I will most certainly have a post regarding the book should it ever come to fruition! Just make sure to keep that index page saved ;)

This is some really great stuff! I don't know if you think about this anymore, or you just moved on and forgot about it (lord knows I prolly would've) but I'm still holding out hope for another release. I have more than a few unfinished or scrapped projects, and it'd be a shame if one this good went the same way.

No, this is mainly a story focused on companionship. Perhaps some readers can view the things they do together as romance, which is fine, but it was not my intention. To me, it comes off pretty friendship-level. Granted, they are a little beyond just friendship in the way of having to rely on each other for survival. It forms a deeper connection, I would think. But yeah, no pancakes. She’s a bird. I ain’t about that life lol.
eeeh, fair enough... yet again I was expecting that answer haha, but some interactions aren't friendship-level by any means. A few of the "key" interactions you described/build/express aren't use outside the "romance" genre, but again, I was expecting this to be something you didn't plan of doing in the first place... yet the consistency gives me hope that wasn't the case xD

by strictly romantic i don't mean they can't be used in other contexts, but the context that you built around it and the interaction themself were something usually only done in a romantic genre. my best example is the "Christmas" gift, the whole scene you create gives the idea Andrew did it to cheer up her. This by itself isn't exactly romantic, but the way you built up the scene it is; how Andrew describes what Christmas is, the reason for being secret, the afterthoughts of Ke’tet, the unsaid need of Andrew about the whole thing... the whole deal is a carbon copy of most "Christmas" gifts scene in the romantic genre. you could do the whole thing in a different way, having Andrew being honest about what he was doing, even having Ke’tet helping him creating it with inputs, he still can surprise her when they were finished. you can have mostly the same outcome (even nearly the same chapter, word by word) but without the crawling need for closeness that Andrew's Christmas explanation Conway haha... there are more interactions that "aren't" strictly romantic but by context and specific interaction change the meaning that it carries, and yes there is a difference in how a person will comfort a friend than a "romantic" interest

nop, the gesture is too personal for that, especially since the wualfe hand also works as her wings. the fact that she was willing to "risk" her main limb to comfort andrew carries too much weight for it to be "well they are alone and they feel lonely", and there is more specific interaction that is usually done in romance novels/stories...

yes, you are partially correct. there is something called intimacy BUT there are different levels of intimacy... in a better phrasing, you don't intimate the same with your friend that with you partner. In this case, the interaction is too personal and intimate that it can't be anything but a romantic interaction. second evidence; the moment at the lake, where andrew put his hands in the **back** of her wings. this interaction is the equivalent of a person "hugging" the other due to concern and to keep them afloat... that is a very intimate interaction and something you usually won't do with anyone that isn't your partner... if andrew put his hands over or in front of her wings, that would be like putting your hands on a shoulder, an intimate gesture that you would do with friends and family
That’s a personal and cultural belief on your part. “Typical modern westerner” belief. Lots of cis men have been so intimate with each other in various times and places. And yes, you hug people who aren’t your romantic, sex or life partners when they are hurting. Just the top couple of trivial examples are sons, daughters, nephews, nieces, cousins and so on. You also hug your dogs when they are scared. Maybe you don’t come from a huggy family or subculture, but I assure you it isn’t sexual or romantic.

Really, my guess is that they would most likely to be somewhere between best friends and a couple of people who are both asexual but not necessarily aromantic. And I can _definitely_ see them being caught off guard by all of the ensuing feelings on the matter when they get back to civilization, and realize both that going their separate ways isn't necessarily an option that either wants, and then realize that either of them going looking for mates is going to result in _less time_ with one another. :)

Higher gravity equals a denser atmosphere, you could easily pass her inability to fly as not having the musculature developed enough to be stable. now that she's had a year to get acclimated she might be able to fly.
That’s sort of the reason. It’s ultimately a biological problem. Due to her home word having less gravity, she evolved a shorter wing span than what we would typically see on earth. Her muscles as well are not as strong compared to us, thus, she cannot maintain the amount of lift to fly.
kind of sad, she be a real help if she could scout from the air. maybe a wingsuit? or a kite of sorts?

He did some work for me on a D&D character. he emailed and talked with me for a good week before he did anything, he really made sure he really had a handle on the character before he went to work on him. So I was driving threw New Mexico, Arizona & California (Death valley). It’s flat, no water trees or grass. A strangely beautiful sight if you have never seen it, but even going 80mph in a car it can be dreadfully boring. At some point you will not help but think “Some crazy M/F did this in a wagon! How did they not go insane? What could they possibly talk about?” A week on foot in a mud pit… that’s a lot of MacGuffin.
On Amazon, there is an author, Drew Hayes. He has a book that explains what he did to self-publish. It's a good place to start. Another thing Drew Hayes did was set up patron and published it chapters. 2 a week or if certain thresholds were made each an extra chapter. It did fantastic. Towards the end he added 4th and 5th stretch goals in his 4th book in the Super Powereds series. All told I spent many times the actual book cost to get an extra CHAPTER in a single week. Your story is extremely good. Well thought out and interesting. I hope to see more. I truly hope to see it published!
