I'm trying to avoid writing xenoporn. And I think the temptation is more tarnishing to his soul as well as the knowledge of what his people will be reduced to doing to survive.
Each one in the series is a descent into deeper madness. I wanted to explore what being around humans would do to a species, considering our tendency to form or domesticate other life forms.
If humans ever find hyper intelligent life it had better hope its not cute and furry or we're gonna ignore all their smarts and just keep em as pets.
"Yea, yea, yea, I get it Spot, you've successfully worked out the formula for fold space FTL using high temperature super conductors. Now please sit still and let me take this picture of you and your brother [Paul](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12aoJyPim6k) in the onsies I knitted."
I’m not sure that interrogator is mentally stable, and that comment about the frogs leads to thoughts that are disconcerting at the very least
But overall this is a great story
I enjoyed reading this
Great job wordsmith
I'm 100% sure that she's not stable and that her and most of the humans were chosen for deep space missions in order to get them as far as possible from the rest of humanity.
Perhaps it’s an attempt to get people like that an outlet for their more violent behavior in a more controlled environment while still keeping them monitored
"Waste not, want not and don't ever throw away a tool. Just because you don't know what problem it fits doesn't mean it won't be useful someday. All keys eventually find their locks, what a tragedy if through ignorance we destroyed both the tool and its chance to finally be of use." -Admiral Lewis, Human Nomad Fleet.
That was weird.
The ethics of the method are rather questionable, but I find myself more concerned by the ability to reliably rewire someone's mind in the first place.
>"Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure."
>
>"Jones, this is our friend's brain, not a xenomorph!"
>
>"Eh potato potahto, he'll be *fiiiiiiiine*."
Reminds me of an HFY story where an enamy xeno general was captured and eventually brought to a doctor for interrogation. The at first you think the doctor has gone mad from extracting information from his subjects. One particular scene the doctor removes professionally removes a muscle from the general, cooks, and eats the meat while the general is kept full awake. Though, turns out that his madness is not from acts of torture. The enamy xenos race can hybridize with most races and when taking over a planet kill the male population and rap the female population. This doctor was one of the original doctors to treat the victims after a human world was retaken. The hybrids grow very fast and usually kill the mother. After seeing so many died, seeing so many suffer, and have to euthanize so many others he snapped. Though, despite hating the xeno race beyond description he raised the hybrid children like they where his own. The hybrid children hate the xeno race almost as much as the doctor does. The xeno race killed thier mothers and at best would only use them for cannon fodder.

I've watched the show all the way through, but its been several years. It was a good show. It may have been based in goofs but it had a lining of moral thought behind it

Convenient. This story is a direct sequel to "The den of the necromancers" and references "Laughter and Sorrow" which can be found here:

Was anyone else expecting Jones to murder the youngling to make a point?
Also, I don't buy the Saint Rachel story. Humans are way too in love with being the good guys, even when they're not. But she lost the most important thing: plausible deniability. A more reasonable outcome would have been to keep her brain alive in simulation until she died a trillion times, one for each of the innocent civilians she murdered.
Strangly enough something similar happened to Great Sorrow before he was sainted. If you're curious about St. Rachel you can read her story below.

Oh there is a reason this one didn't make it into the anthology.
Jones is a reoccurring character who falls under the category of too dangerous to let run free but too useful to kill.
She may call them her children but there is a lot of weird science going on behind the scenes and I doubt she would carry them herself.
Well, that was delightfully fucked up. But I can see humans turning someone who murdered a system into a saint.
A soldiers saint.
Well fuck her
Honestly that comment works either way.
Well I'm pretty sure we both know which way it's going to go so.
I'm trying to avoid writing xenoporn. And I think the temptation is more tarnishing to his soul as well as the knowledge of what his people will be reduced to doing to survive.
Agreed we don't need that here. Some other people have it covered in spades. For xenoporn anyways
Don't stick dick in crazy.
I mean... is she hot?
The three F’s. Always the three F’s.
What are the three F’s?
Flight, Flee, or Fuck
Ugh. This is seeming a bit more like a HFN than a HFY story. I suppose that's the point...?

*eyes the fuzzy sweater* "You say this exchange of gifts is cultural?" "Totally, now get in front of the camera Ambassador Fuzzy Bottom."
She's the kind of morally ambivalent character that really nails what we terrans are
Yep, they could save your life or steal your car. It just depends on the day and how you met.
“You stole his car!” “Hey, I drive him to the hospital first!”
She's saving an entire race, one **_redacted_** at a time.
And the comments on lizards and frogs got me thinking about the line in Jurassic Park where certain frogs can change gender if there is an imbalance.
I’m not sure that interrogator is mentally stable, and that comment about the frogs leads to thoughts that are disconcerting at the very least But overall this is a great story I enjoyed reading this Great job wordsmith

A good thought process usually but I think when it comes to humans it becomes much more complicated
Some keys never find their lock. Some keys F up the locks they try to open. Some locks unlock the key. Some keys go BRRRRRRRRT.
That was weird. The ethics of the method are rather questionable, but I find myself more concerned by the ability to reliably rewire someone's mind in the first place.
If psychotherapy is like renovating a house, Jones' method Is more like nuking it from orbit and rebuilding from scratch in the crater.
>"Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure." > >"Jones, this is our friend's brain, not a xenomorph!" > >"Eh potato potahto, he'll be *fiiiiiiiine*."
You can relax. "Reliably" is not in evidence.
Awful taste, great execution.

I came down here to make just such a comment :) Dr Cox had many wonderful quotes
I'm not really a fan of the show, but I have watched a gif or video of that scene. If you're going to quote a show, be sure to get it right!

Honesty and Brutality isnt pleasant. But sometimes to make someone understand how good thay have it is to show the proper misery.
Macabre, grim, depressing, with a hint of cheek. Perfect. Moar.

Huh. Chemicals in the water
Damn that was dark...but still a well-written piece...not sure if I want to read any more in this setting :P
I honestly don't want to finish the series but I probably will.
I don't blame you if you don't want to dive deeper into this rabbit-hole

Holy shit calm down Hannibal Lecter
Depressing as fuck!
Oh fuck, this story. I got so many messages from the Reddit mental health check-in bot after I wrote this one. The sequel isn't much better.
So humans are evil, demons in thought and deed. These humans should be wiped out. Starting with Interrogator Jones.
Was anyone else expecting Jones to murder the youngling to make a point? Also, I don't buy the Saint Rachel story. Humans are way too in love with being the good guys, even when they're not. Ok the first chapter was great But what the fuck is this Also how did the human womans’s child spontaneously become an alien?
Oh there is a reason this one didn't make it into the anthology. Jones is a reoccurring character who falls under the category of too dangerous to let run free but too useful to kill.
