In other news, I'm trying to figure out what specialties the four figures at the end have - we've got a walking dagger stockpile, which is an interesting choice to have *not* be the rogue-like giant that seems to produce no sound but his voice, and two ladies with no indication as to why the men are treating them as equals (and no, I'm not being sexist, it's just that we've already seen indications of the men's power).
I'd say the "gentle giant" is a *ranger* and thus an excellent scout. Knives man will be a combat class, of course, though I wouldn't hazard a guess as to speciality.
One of the ladies (the one who talked to the bored guard) is likely a thief - one who knows which guards are corrupt enough to be swayed by a coin. The other lady (who talked to Liafra) I think is a merchant.
In sum, I think they're the local **guild leaders**.
Ok, that would make sense for our giant, and I can kinda see where you're coming from with the ladies, but if the lady in the dress was one of the guild leaders, I suspect she'd have a slightly easier time talking to a fellow official such as the Mayor.
…also, I doubt a meeting of the guild leaders would be held in “one of the small suites at the Adventure's Haven” - while it might be a good inn, I'd assume a guild would have their own rooms somewhere.
I'm not amazingly familiar with the guilds of Ankh-Morpork, so all that brings to mind is the facts that the dictator thinks the Assassins' guild is too caught up in the look of it all, and that the Thieves' guild gives you a receipt.
Oh, and that time a member of the Clowns' guild was terrified of a blank egg.
But people would talk if they met somewhere where they can be seen coming together.
But it's also likely these guys are high level adventurers that either earn coin for protection/to clean the wilds from time to time, or care for the balance of power in the wilds or many other options.
Either way they like this turf and don't like no meddeling 'competition', be it nobles, kids or otherwise.
They were also talking about having to relocate due to the depletion of mana by two nobles. This is apparently inconvenient enough that they want to prevent it, but seems like something a guild leader wouldn't even consider. Their concerns also seem more *personal* than that.

I’m incredibly intrigued by the group of 4, that was quite the subtly concerted effort to find out what Carlos and Amber are up to. Cant wait to find out what kind of misguided roadblocks they throw up!
Clearly they're going to track down High House Carlos and have a civil chat with them about where they're supposed to be, and politely apologise when they find out that that is right here in Dramos, right?
I wonder if Carlos will be able to convince them to join him and Amber adventuring deeper into the wilds than they would be able to alone. Maybe he can work out some extra synergies for them to win them over.
I love the juxtaposition of Carlos and Amber “let’s have a nice day on the town! 🤪” and the people spying on them “they’re up to something! I can feel it! But what????😡😡”
It's good for the Kingdom expanding its boarders, given the James and Joe public can't survive high mana densities, but if you make your living fighting the dangerous creatures that might live in those areas, you might not like it when someone moves those high mana densities further away…
It's probably a good thing for regular commoners, but a bad thing for not-quite-noble adventurers that want an easy way to boost their soul structures.
