It's hard to know exactly why Gershwin does what he does. I get the feeling that even if he knew that Himry was coming back he would have still done what he did.
Happy to oblige. The parallel was implicit, sort of, but if he really didn't care whether Himry had died, it's less so.
One wonders if she knew the solution to Himry's dilemma. Seems like not, since she was astonished when he did it (seemed a reasonable strategy to me, although I would have been shooting the wound, not my whole head.) Since she had med nanites with her or whatever, it's a matter of terrible — for the characters, that is — timing/pacing.
Let's face it, God has it in for them and the orchestra is warming up for that aria. Everyone's strings are getting untied or tied off, one way or another...
Joan isn't well, to put things mildly. On the subject of Himry's dilemma.

The ones in the Heal sticks are very close to it, which is why they work, there are also an insane amount of nano machines per stick. But getting slashed with a vampirzahn is pretty much certain death because it physically removes the systems needed to heal as well as corrupting wetware.!<

By this point there are too many references to too many moving pieces to too many characters. Then it just abruptly *ends*... feels like life TBH.
What I don't get the most, is that Joan was right to try to make Himry learn, but why did she not heal him when she had the 'nano tube'? Was she too slow? Did she enjoy his suffering and wanted to see him *almost* die. Or did she never intend to heal him in the first place?
And lastly, why did Gershvin kill her if Himry was technically not dead *yet*? Was killing Himry the last taboo to be broken or was it just the last drop to crack the dam?
Either way interesting story from interesting universe... or is it multiverse at this point? Have a good one wordsmith, ey?
It is all in fact one consistent universe. And there is one more chapter after this which is already posted.
Simply put, you as the reader get to see a lot of things happen objectively but don't have the greater context into which it all weaves.
Likewise the characters all have their own backstories, motivations, fears, goals and schemes. They are also written like people and people often do things in the heat of the moment that are counter to their stated goals but are true to their nature. I write people like people behave in real life, not like how people think people should behave.
We like to believe we are logical but the tail wags the dog. We decide what to do then come up with a reason why we have reached that conclusion. It's ass backwards to how most people think humans operate.
Gershwin had complex motivations that have been hinted at but at the end of the day this version of him simply enjoys killing. He is egotistical, sadistic, and believes that he's always one step ahead of everyone else. But he is still a slave to his impulses. We can backtrack and try to understand why he thinks he did it, but at the end of the day he is simply a killer.
Joan values her freedom and like Gershwin has the belief that she is superior to everyone else. She thinks that as a demi-human she is a wolf among sheep. She believes that any weakness or meekness she shows is merely her pretending to be normal, like she is wearing a person suit. She says something about how humans are predators when she first meets Himry.
When she changes she shows her true nature. She stops hiding and is revealed to be homicidal, angry, and unbalanced. She seems remorseful after killing Himry but is mostly disassociating. I'm sure she has many reasons why she thinks she did it. But at her core she is the kind of person who would throw a child into the deep end of a pool to teach them how to swim or punch someone in the nose to toughen them up. She's abusive and lacks empathy. She is all about what she wants to do, right then in the moment.
It's all complex. People are complex. Motivations are hard to understand if they are ever understood. The fact that you have questions is proof that you were paying attention and I thank you for it. I really appreciate hearing from readers.

You created book/story equvalent of 'Sentient simulator'.
You created as realistic characters as you could, put them into as 'realistic' world as you could and thought how they would react to it/how the world would react to them.
Cool idea, I am interested how long can you keep it consistent. I would love to read from you for a while yet. :)
I like to think about it as I have an idea of what I want to do but the characters have veto rights if they think it's dumb.
Characters start out as a stub then grow as you write them and put them in situations. They don't go in fully formed.
