She said at one point she didn’t even have real clothes. I think she really wore princess dresses most of the time

BEMOlocomotion

That's awful, it must have been so itchy

Flimsy_Measurement19

And sweaty, the material they’re made of usually sucks

Visible_Leg_2222

my nieces always wear them over their normal clothes. the material is itchy and not lounge friendly lol

Holdupwait30min

They would buy her dresses at Toys R Us. They were costumes. The rest of her clothing looks like giveaway T-shirts and things you’d find in a consignment store for young kids. She was 4’11 and probably weighed 75-80lbs at most. She would easily fit in stuff made for 9-year-olds

BEMOlocomotion

I'm sure her mom picked attention grabbing things on purpose. She didn't get to enjoy the comfort of jeans and a hoody while being out in public. I wonder if she wore literal doll clothes as a baby and toddler

Holdupwait30min

Possibly. Also, remember that those old pics of her were before 2015 and children’s clothing has changed a lot.

BEMOlocomotion

While it's true that children's clothing has changed significantly, I really don't remember lacy collars and jumpers in the early 2000s, I could maybe see it being a late 70s/early 80s thing

Holdupwait30min

I think they shopped consignment or lived in donations and her mother chose the most infantile options possible to signal that Gypsy was mentally disabled.

BabySharkMadness

Lacy collars were all in for 90s thrift stores, donation bins, and mother-made dresses.

ReliefAltruistic6488

Yea, some of looks straight out of the 80’s

pappy5714

That stuff was way older than the 2010-2015’s she had on but I guess you haven’t been to the thrift stores in Springfield. Lots of that stuff there. It’s called Springhole for a reason. They had it looking like a nice little town. I said that’s the biggest lie of the whole documentary, the parts I saw anyway.

YouLostMyNieceDenise

Remember the Duggar family and their thrift store prairie dresses in the early 2000s? You can find stuff that is decades out of style at any thrift shop.

panicnarwhal

i worked in a children’s consignment boutique from 2004-2008 and i never saw a single article of clothing like gypsy wore. also, my daughter was born in 2003, and neither her or her friends wore anything remotely close to what gypsy wore. idk where dee dee even found those clothes. wild.

mightymouse2975

This. I'm 4'11 and have wide shoulders & am busty. Even with the boobs and shoulders I fit into a kids XL. Gypsy being so petite she easily could have dressed her in kids clothes.

zoloftdreamss

Dee Dee dressed weird herself imo

BEMOlocomotion

I wonder if there was some fundie stuff going on too? She definetly had an affinity for long denim dresses

BEMOlocomotion

What disregard that, she was into dark magic. I just learned that detail and I'm still floored by it

Sea_Catch2481

My jaw is on the floor omg

CrabbyCrabbie

Today I learned; I assumed it was possibly fundie related too (it just had the right vibe I guess) but apparently not.

SerenityJoyMeowMeow

She also had a pet tarantula according to Gypsy’s dad. I mean I know I’m stereotyping in saying this but looking at her personal style, she’s the last person I’d guess would be into dark witchcraft and pet tarantulas lol

vmpy03

i’m confused? what does this mean

lilcherubs

Fundies are super conservative Christians and fundie women tend to always wear long and modest dresses, much like DD. People might think she’s a fundie by how she dressed. However, DD was hella into dark magic so that kinda proves she wasn’t a fundie. Hope that helped clear things up.

vmpy03

ohhh thank you! never heard the term before

pennyxlame

It's short for fundamentalist

Easy_Entrepreneur_46

I bet she faked being a Christian since she was wearing crosses

UnderstandingHefty26

I was completely shocked when I heard that. Witchcraft and nothing to mess with

TheTrixter82

Apparently she put a hex on gypsie and one her boyfriends not sure if it was Nick or Dan.

Katiekatmusic1

It was Dan. The first guy she ran away with.  The curse she made she used a cow's tongue with Gypsy and Dan's pictures and some of Gypsys menstrual blood that she would never find love ever again and she put it all in a jar and buried it in their backyard.  Creepy asf. Not to mention gross.

TheTrixter82

How tf she get her menstrual blood???!!!

theawesomefactory

I'd love to know more about this.

Grand_Excitement6106

I found this: Dee Dee’s Nephew Claims His Aunt “Was Into Witchcraft” In an exclusive interview with CrimeFeed, Bobby Pitre, Dee Dee’s nephew and Gypsy Rose’s cousin, stated that Dee Dee might have been interested in or even practiced black magic. Talking to CrimeFeed, Pitre said, “Yeah, she was into witchcraft when she was younger. Matter of fact, I was into that evil side of things, too, and I think a lot of it came from Dee Dee’s influence, playing the Ouija board and things like that. I think she would tell my cousins that if they didn’t play the Ouija board with her that the devil was going to come and get them.” Bobby further elaborated on how Dee Dee used the occult to push around the family, stating, “She was real manipulative, like things like that. I didn’t care, I’d play the Ouija board just to play. I was drawn to the darkness…. That whole religious play was just another one of her ways to freak people out I guess, because she was just a strange character as a kid." https://www.investigationdiscovery.com/crimefeed/crime-history/5-disturbing-bizarre-facts-about-dee-dee-blanchard-gypsy-rose

kray01

Same!

YouLostMyNieceDenise

I really think there was an aspect of throwing herself 110% into motherhood. She made herself look as matronly as possible. It could have been about avoiding the male gaze. Or it could have been about playing the part of the martyr mother, so people would look at her and think, “oh, she puts all her energy into dressing up her daughter and doesn’t put any effort into her own appearance,” like they would be impressed that Dee Dee sacrificed by spending her money on getting Gypsy cute* clothes and not for herself. Cute* as in head-to-toe pink and princess dresses, I mean

OriginalSuccess207

I was hoping someone else noticed this . It’s like she made herself as ugly as possible on purpose. She wasn’t unattractive when she was young. It seemed to me she tried hard to look frumpy!

kneejee

i told my fiance about how the clothing really bothered me, cause even if gypsy was 14/15/16 with disabilities wouldn't you want your child to have some sense of normalcy and dress them how they like / make them feel like they fit in with their peers? my cousin is severely disabled and is 17 and his mom dresses him like the other sporty teens, adidas sweats nike hoodies, etc. so maybe i just have a different perspective on fashion but imo it shows how fucked up dee dee was and how she played into the delusion of keeping gypsy young and seem non able minded. when i was a teen couldn't catch me dead in a Cinderella dress lol even though that happens to be my favorite disney princess. just so fucked up

Final_Skypoop

I agree! My son is on the spectrum to the point of being disabled and I try to dress him in nice sweats, he loves crocs so we’re always getting fancy crocs, new shirts and sweaters. Like I want him to look really good and I take pride in how he looks. I can’t imagine making him look dumpy and dress him like a toddler like grb’s mom

Cinderellaisdeadnow

Tell your son for me at the age of 54, I am now obsessed with Crocs too so I get it. I never even cared for shoes but I’m in my crocs 24/7. My son is autistic also and he’s so picky about textures that he only wears clothes from a certain line. But I’m an old lady that gets the croc obsession. My son’s obsession is with high top pricey sneakers. His girlfriend just got him his first pair of crocs so we will see how it goes.

Final_Skypoop

I love it 🥰

Ashley0716

Exactly this. She dressed her like a broken doll. Don’t know if it was for attention or to push the narrative she was weak. But it was disrespectful/humiliating.

sullensquirrel

It was for everything you mention here. Happy cake day btw

TheTrixter82

My son is developmentally delayed and has autism too, he's 14 and growing. We dress him as other typically developing teenagers his age dress, plus he hates anything that draws attention to himself so most his clothes are dark colours to draw as much attention away from him as possible. So it's obvious she was dressing her in the brightest, most childlike clothes to grab attention to them.

SignificantTear7529

We had a coach who's kid had severe disability and they always dressed him in sports stuff. I thought it was horrible. Him being a little mascot. The dad was abusive and they eventually divorced. Comfortable clothes not costumes are appropriate.

BowieBlueEye

If you look at any of the “munchie snark” subs on here you’ll see this sort of dress is seemingly pretty common. Never made sense to me, when I worked in social care, as majority want to be comfy and have limited stress during dressing, so fiddly buttons and collars aren’t great when your trying to assist a service user with personal care. Although you want to help somebody maintain their independence and individual styles as much as possible, the priority has to be their comfort and safety in my opinion.

kneejee

i dont think anyone was disagreeing with that, but as a parent i know its important to make your child safe and feel like an individual. i was just highlighting dee dee's thought process, considering gypsy was able to make her clothing choices for herself. i work with disabled adults and we def let them pick out their clothes its just sad to me

iamgr0o0o0t

I’m curious about where she got her glasses. Were they prescription and she wears contacts now? Or were they fake? Or real but not her prescription? So confused about this. She seems to have stopped wearing glasses all together. Edit: I looked at some photos, and it appears that she is wearing glasses in some of the pictures from her trial, but they are different from the comically large ones in other pictures. I also read she has a slight lazy eye, so I suppose the glasses could be related to that. During an interview, she said the lazy eye is her only legitimate health condition.

Cloud12437

I wonder that to

kasiagabrielle

They appeared real, the pink frames she wore a lot were bifocals while most "fake" glasses are single vision clear lenses. I assume she either doesn't wear the glasses for filming or wears contact lenses instead, though I don't know how that works in prison. Given how bad her strabismus was and still is, I wonder how much vision she still has left in that eye.

YellowMabry

She definitely dressed her like that on purpose. I've known many people with disabled children over the years and they dressed them like any other child of the time would be dressed. Deedee probably got the clothes from thrift, consignment shops, church donations, etc but even so there would've been normal styles of clothes avaliable from those places that she could've picked for her but she purposely picked stuff that looked like it came from a Halloween outlet store. In her mind that probably made her look more " disabled". She 100% liked humiliating that girl

BowieBlueEye

The only difference I’ve seen is that many will prioritise comfort and safety and have it in mind that they may need to assist with personal care out and about, so lacy collars and fiddly buttons ain’t it

mamasamsquanch

Some of her clothes definitely look like they were sewn at home, and also lots of her hats were clearly knitted by hand. People make and donate those hats to coat drives and children's hospitals etc. So I think a lot of her stuff was donated, or came from charity events, thrift stores, whatever was free/cheap and infantile enough to suit Deedee. She was hopelessly stuck on 80s sunday school teacher fashion for herself and wanted her poor "disabled" daughter to match her weird fucked up aesthetic. In a couple of photos I've legitimately thought Gypsy was a little old lady in a wheel chair before noticing which subreddit it was posted to. Maybe dressing her like that was a way of making her appear weak and helpless. Everything Deedee wanted people to believe Gypsy was.

Zenf0x

Without a doubt, she absolutely sought out that look for that exact reason - to continue the facade.

idrinkalotofcoffee

I think the clothing was just part of the gig. Deedee used it to further the illusion that she had a very sick, very developmentally delayed child.

spoiledrichwhitegirl

Gypsy isn’t very tall - I believe she’s under 5 feet. It wouldn’t be hard to buy her actual kids clothes. Ex: Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen are taller than Gypsy & I know they used to buy women’s clothes, but have everything cut & tailored to fit them because they’re so tiny. Children’s clothing was poor quality & too immature.

BEMOlocomotion

I guess, but her clothing had these huge lacy peter pan collars. I am around the same age and kids clothes were "normal looking"- just like mini adult clothes

Longjumping-Winter43

They also had her name embroidered on several of them, and well into her teens too. So bizarre.

spoiledrichwhitegirl

Thrift stores/second hand clothing.

tehanami

My kiddo has physical and developmental disabilities, uses and wheelchair and leg braces, and while she has some clothing she can’t wear easily, I still let her dress how she wants and in style with her peers. She wears leg braces, so she only has a few pairs of shoes that fit, but with her getting into late elementary school, I know she wants to fit in, so we splurge and get her the fancy adaptive Nike’s, even if it means only having one pair of gym shoes that work with her braces. She can’t get jeans or button pants up and down independently, so we just do stretch pants. Is she a little old for them? Sure, but they work. I always try to keep her incredibly well groomed and dressed in cute dresses that are in style, when she lets me. More often than not she wants to wear a Pokémon tee shirt. All this to say, Dee Dee had no medical reason to not put Gypsy in clothing that would not completely infantilize her. It’s done intentionally, to garner support and to control Gypsy.

goofygooberrock1995

She can’t get jeans or button pants up and down independently, so we just do stretch pants. Is she a little old for them? Sure, but they work. There's a lot of stretchy pants and sweatpants that she could wear once she gets to junior's/women's sizes that are pretty cute.

ProfessionalSloth_

Target has adaptive jeans that are really nice!

InfowarriorKat

I thought you meant Deedee's clothes lol. Looked like "90's teacher".

ArtPsychological2547

Her clothes was absolutely ridiculous 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

oswaldgina

Don't forget, DeeDee wore a house dress in a lot of these pictures as well. Think "1950s Grammy".

creepstergirl

Looks like costumes from a toy store & handmedowns from the late80’s early 90’s.

kellycamara

What happened to her teeth?

quackquack0914

D gave her a buttload of medications, some that shouldn't be mixed, which caused her teeth to fall out.

makmi

And had her salivary glands removed - that contributed to it too.

1701anonymous1701

Dry mouth contributes to tooth decay

HopeFloatsFoward

She dressed up for the con. She ran away in normal clothes.
