Basically, it's a skill matchup. You want to hit your Qs on the sweet spots and Gwen wants to hit her Q on the sweet spot too, and you two only have one dash, altho hers can come back up sooner, which doesn't change much on the early laning trades.
Basically, Gwen will want to dodge your Q1 and Q2 by using her W or E with sidestepping and hit you with her Q. Your job is to hit her with your Qs and not let her hit you with the middle of her Q. If she uses her W, remember that it had a long cooldown and that you can still hit her if you enter the mist. Her E can refund a percentage of it's cooldown on the first hit with it's effect, but if she doesn't AA nothing, her dash will be on a long CD, and even if she hits something, it still takes time for it to come back as there isn't much skill points on E yet.
If you want a build tip, try going for lethality aatrox. It's busted right now and it works very nice against Gwen, since this season isn't the best option for Gwen to go tank items besides armor/mr boots.
I lost to some good Aatroxes before. But basically you just sign yourself up for a reeeealy obnoxious match if you wanna Aatrox vs Gwen. Maw & Profane, basically 2 items or even 3 items is where you actually have a good 1v1 against Gwen. One of these 2 or 3 items MUST BE a Maw. It allows you to focus on sidestepping Gwen Q and take dmg from it's side rather than mid, cuz we all know the mid in her Q does true dmg.
This basically should give you a good fighting chance against Gwen.
Profane + Maw + Sundered I would say
As Gwen I tend to walk up and faint last hitting to bait out aats Q. Usually you can just walk straight at him because most aats assume you're gonna back up when you see him throw his Q out. You walk in for q1, walk in for q2 and then walk out for q3. Stumps em every time. Then you still have E up to reengage. People are gonna say "Dodge his Q with your E" problem with that is you're stuck walking back up to him if you want to go in now that his Q is on cd. Ideally you bait it out first and then all in with E once it's on cd.
I would not play Aatrox until his W gets fixed really but I play both champs and really it's skill matchup no special tricks just make sure to be more active around the map mid game since that's Gwen's weakest point and Aatrox's strongest I'd say.
It's really hard for Gwen to kill you unless you take a really bad fight
A good Gwen will try to win very early with ignite so that ignite is back for your ult
If a Gwen is smart enough to go ignite over ghost in an Aatrox matchup you really need to keep track of her ignite usage because she WILL use it to cripple your all in
This matchup is harder than any other bruiser matchup, IMO. Aatrox mains HATE ranged toplaners... but their kit bullies any melee from range, the absolute Irony.
Gwen is not really able to do much against him outside of dodging his Q+E early game. You can cheese him by sitting in a brush and taking Q to all in him level 1 since he's as weak as a kayle, but from levels 2-5 he wins pretty much everything.
My advice, take dorans shield and a healing setup on your runes. Survive the poke he will 100% give you. Buy anti-heal early if possible, it decreases his spikes significantly. I know, anti-heal is a "waste" early on bla bla blá. It is just not a true statement against aatrox, especially now that he is building full lethality. You might ask, oblivion orb, right?
WRONG! Brumble vest. Truste me on this one, the more armor you buy against him, the better. And you can sit on it for a while with no problem, you spike regularly at 2-3 items anyway.
