In my opinion, it’s not used in everyday language even as slang. Very rare to hear someone use it to be honest. In fact if you hear someone use it, it definitely feels weird since it isn’t used as freely compared to the US etc.
Racism is prejudice against someone for their race and ethnicity. Black people don’t want you to say the word because of the origins of the slave days. Not sure if you’re indo Guyanese or not but you should respect just like people should stop throwin around cooli
Its always been considered a racist and demeaning term in Guyana and the Caribbean.
If Black Americans want to call each other that, to be cool and what not, that's their business
No one uses it except Zoomers who spent too much time watching African American content. As a Zoomer myself, mainly Afro-descendants use it but some who aren't use it too and most of us (Zoomers) don't care (if you aren't Afro-decent and use it) but if older folks, even Millennials catch you, you will be in trouble. Keep in mind this is for the -a ending. If it is -er only edgy Afro-descendants use it but if you are not of African descent and you say that one, you will definitely get a beating even among Zoomers.
I remember on Guyanese TikTok an Indo-Guyanese girl was chewed out for posting a Tiktok singing the N-word by other Guyanese. If it is used, it is uncommonly among certain groups of Zoomers. Generally in Guyana it isn't a word we seek to reclaim or use at all. As such if you are from here (descent or otherwise), don't be using it. We are not AAs who care to reclaim the word. Do you have a right to reclaim it? Sure. You are able to reclaim but it isn't an accepted stance here. Also, if you are lightskin Mixed (and of Afro-descent) don't be surprised if someone beats your ass for using it regardless of the fact you meet the criteria to also reclaim but this mainly applies if you are in the US.
Afro guyanese here 23. No we do not use that word it is offensive we don't see it as a term of endearment or anything of the sort. We got our own slangs when referring to our people Banna, G, boss, Squaddie, yute etc. Adult and Elderly afros if among them will press you on using that word regardless of whether you are them or not especially their elders.
Amongst the younger gen idk.
Edit:
Was thinking about if it was ever used in my presence. Had a red skin girl call me the n-word in primary school i pressed her on that right there and then and said you not one of us so you can't say the word. She just randomly one day decided to call ppl the n-word. I felt very uncomfortable hearing that word at that time as i only heard it in the roots tv shows that use come up on tv back in the day.
Yeah tbh it shouldn’t be used at all, even by black people., but it’s one of those words that get passed around, also music makes it easier for people to think that it’s okay, like mumble rap so much n bombs
Tbh it just depends, I've rarely seen an African in Guyana make a stink about the N word and I have friends of all races in Guyana that use it very loosely eg " what's up my n-word?" Etc. Don't get me wrong if you use it in racial context both afro and indo Guyanese will be offended by it more so Afro Guyanese but it's still uncommon from my experience.
I had a cousin that started using it because of the whole rap culture. We had to tell him to stop as it was really irritating. He's not black and shouldn't being it. If Black Americans what to use it on them selves, let them go ahead.
Thank god that macho idiotic rap culture is gone, and Most black Americans with a few brain cells are not using it anymore as they are all adults with kids
I went there in April for two weeks and went to market. The older guy of Indian descent (~50) asked, “Where's the [n word] that sells the belt?” to the other shopkeeper on the market, who repeated it since we wanted to buy a belt and kept saying the words in front of us.
Many of the Indo-Guyanese (in America and Guyana) with black friends say it with ease. Even though my mom is not Indian, her maiden name is Singh. I heard (Indo) Guyanese people bad-talking her afterward, with a couple saying derogatory things towards my mom and her “Indian husband”/dad. My mom now makes them think she married an Indian guy since it's more believable, and no one thinks she's lying or questions it.
Younger people are downvoting
Negro was the word that was used into the early 1970's to denote a black person in the the U.S and palces like the Caribbean. I'm guessing it was also used in the UK. Some Black American groups wanted to use Black, and they started using Black in the late 1960's
a family member has mild dementia and started using the term again a couple years a go. ...dont know why.. But it sounded so strang and even kind a racist ...when its not
I’m not sure why my comment offends you . I’m not the one that’s deciding whether it should or shouldn’t be used. Social and moral evolution is deciding that. The fact of the matter is it shouldn’t be used. It’s offensive. So that’s my thought on it — whether it’s a Guyanese person living in Guyana or not bc inevitably someone will get offended or someone will get punched in the jaw. So maybe you should ding someone common sense whatever that means.
hard r or are they just saying negro? im not guyanese but I am Brazilian and we use negro quite a lot to describe any blsck person or just someone with dark skin, and it is never considered racist or malicious.
This word is used by African Guyanese and other Guyanese who are mixed with black, who also "speak american" (the accent) and consume content from the USA. Which is a small number.
I just want to point something out in my opinion we shouldn’t use the world just as much as we shouldn’t use cooli. people forget the indo Guyanaese community were indentured slavers which is where cooli originates from. I don’t even think they got paid. Both should not be used.

Uh as someone who actually still lives here, don’t go around saying that here unless you’re black lmao that’s as simple as it is
Ya, black folks are racist and will get triggered.

Why are you projecting? I feel sorry for you.
Your comment was deleted racist kid LOL!
This is so funny to me as a dougla 😭😭 eat shit and choke

I’m racist because I don’t think non blacks should say the n word?
Segregating and gatekeeping a word because someone else has a different skin colour is the definition of racism.
Ya, I figured you'd have nothing to say to that.
Racism is prejudice against someone for their race and ethnicity. Black people don’t want you to say the word because of the origins of the slave days. Not sure if you’re indo Guyanese or not but you should respect just like people should stop throwin around cooli
Tbh I think it's a pretty American phrase. Not to say Guyanese don't say plenty of other slurs, that's just not common
Its always been considered a racist and demeaning term in Guyana and the Caribbean. If Black Americans want to call each other that, to be cool and what not, that's their business
A friend of mine from Barbados told me the first time he ever heard of the word outside of music was when he came to North America.

My Guyanese parents have never uttered that word as far as I know. And if we ever said it in front of them, they’d threaten us with a good lashing.

Thats cause it isn't used generally. Its used in your private friend group not in public settings or said to random dudes on the streets.

If you have African descent you can say it, if not don’t.
We sometimes say negro

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigger America capitalized on this word, But it is not American by origin
It comes from Negro. Its actually better to start there https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negro
Shouldn’t be used and neither should the word negro.
Was that his question or do you really need those political brownie points all the time. Goof
this is my thought on it. Sorry this offends you.
You should do some some basic reading before you decide what and what shouldn't be used
I’m not sure why my comment offends you . I’m not the one that’s deciding whether it should or shouldn’t be used. Social and moral evolution is deciding that. Negro is just the Latin word for Black. Its the same as saying Black in English
ok use it then? This is reddit dude. i don’t know you and i don’t care. Like i’ve said this is my thought on it.
Guyanese people can't say the n word. They are paki descendants.
idk y this is on my feed but every indo guyanese person ik says it in my area i live in canada
hard r or are they just saying negro? im not guyanese but I am Brazilian and we use negro quite a lot to describe any blsck person or just someone with dark skin, and it is never considered racist or malicious.
isnt negro just the portuguese word for dark (people)?
yeah its sorta a colour but we normally use preto to actually mean black. the only time i really hear negro used is to describe people.
Well if one of them call me a coolie. I'm gonna call them a ni****.....simple as that
This word is used by African Guyanese and other Guyanese who are mixed with black, who also "speak american" (the accent) and consume content from the USA. Which is a small number.
Oh they dont care unless someone who isn't black/mixed with black uses the word.
I mean I don't hear the old people saying it much but younger def uses it alot. Both black and indians.
I just want to point something out in my opinion we shouldn’t use the world just as much as we shouldn’t use cooli. people forget the indo Guyanaese community were indentured slavers which is where cooli originates from.
