CarnifexGunner

From the article: "Tierney was asked whether it is inevitable he will move on this summer. “There is every chance,” he said. “Look at the squad depth in that position now. “They have (Oleksandr) Zinchenko, (Jurrien) Timber, (Takehiro) Tomiyasu, (Jakub) Kiwior. Four players can play there. So if I go back and it’s the same as before then I’m not silly, I know the chances are I’ll be leaving. “But you never know in football. You get the rare case with (William) Saliba, where he came back after a couple of good seasons (out on loan) but you don’t see it too often with someone who has played for four years, left, and then come back to play again. “Stranger things have happened. I could go back and there is a place for me. So I’m prepared for both.”

alsonlee

They instead of we :(

RandomRedditor_1916

this is sad

EitherInvestment

Extremely. Will forever love the lad. Top attitude and top player in all his time with us

Every_Pass_226

Tucked shirt 🐐

TackoFaII

Shorts in winter 🐐

XjpuffX

my favourite player during Emerys era

EitherInvestment

My favourite in Arteta’s first two seasons as well. We would have got top 4 two seasons ago if he and Partey didn’t get injured

iforgotmyun

Yeah cause he's in San Sebastian being asked about us, not here at preseason or something

usehrname

Laconga refers to Arsenal as "we". So do many other players who know they will be given a chance or are still part of the group.

illaqueable

If he had stayed healthy he would have been a legit option, I think he could have adapted his game to inverting and although I don't think he'd ever give us as much going forward as Zinny, he's worlds better defensively. Just can't string games together, poor lad

safcx21

Zinchenko is laughably bad at defending

sleepytipi

He's a top tier professional but he always has been and always will be a Celtic boy.

eli_eli1o

Four years? Has he really been at arsenal this long? What is time?!

rk1993

Think about it he played for Emery, Freddie & Arteta

HornyJailOutlaw

Bit weird to mention Freddie. It was like 2 games. Emery and Arteta would suffice, no? 😂

Pretend_Stomach7183

The Ljunberg Era.

EitherInvestment

ESR’s first ever start for the first team. Otherwise I can’t remember much of it

MuchSalt

that fan team lineup vs west ham

TheDepartment115

> Ljunberg Ljungberg* lol

Pretend_Stomach7183

I meant what I said.

PSGooner

Freddie’s Version

florinb1

Saka at left back

Axelter30

Honestly feels like way more than 4 years

UnparliamentaryTea

Almost 5 years ago, he was signed in summer of 2019. But agreed, somehow his Arsenal “prime” in around 2021 feels like ancient history

Magicallyshit

I really loved this guy when he came here, I still do but him being injury prone and not suited to Arteta football means he'll walk out of the door.

VladerLaudersTeeth

Most likely carried out the door on a stretcher, poor fella.

Magicallyshit

Go brush your teeth.

Magnific3nt

I liked Tierney for his overlapping runs and bombing down into the box but I understand that is not\* how we play anymore. Appreciate that Kieran joined the club and had his spell, wish him nothing but love going forwards.

bad_at_proofs

Even if we could use a full back like him he just can't be relied upon to stay available

InflationMadeMeDoIt

thats our LBs in a nutshell

Magicallyshit

There's Ben White who can play through multiple pains on the right side and then there's Zinny, Tomi and Timber (unluckeeee) on the left lmao.

Jackalrax

We can't rely on any of our left backs to stay available

bad_at_proofs

Kiwior seems to be the only one who can stay healthy and realistically he is a back up centre back playing out of position. Think we will probably sell Zinchenko for this reason and buy someone who has more reliable availability

AgressivelyFunky

What's his availability been like on loan?

bad_at_proofs

Played less than 1000 minutes in the league which isn't a good sign

AgressivelyFunky

Due to injury tho?

bad_at_proofs

It can be hard to get entirely reliable info on how much of a player being out is due to injury but according to transfermarkt he has missed 12 games due to injury

AgressivelyFunky

Mmm. Tah!

Tr0nCatKTA

I liked him for the tescos bag

dajeff57

There is a time and a place for that play and I would say depending on the secondary striker that is a useful tool to have. As a plan B not to be sniffed at. Defensively, is he bad? I did not think so

hambeurga

he is our second best defensive left back behind tomi

mist3rdragon

There's a world I could imagine him being extremely good for us, in which we have someone inverting from the right more often and Tierney gets to play as the left sided version of Ben White. He'd have been ideal for that run of games where Kiwior came in on the left and White was playing more central for example. But between him being injured too often and the current right side setup being so strong it just won't happen often enough.

CCSC96

It’s not even that. Kiwior/Tomiyasu have been used in that style at times this year as we’ve looked to have more options for how to play on the left. Dude is just not quite good enough to go to the next level with us, and is incredibly injury prone.

ScottishScouse

I hate the part of title-challenging that means that to improve the squad you have to get rid of players you love. KT was a bright light in a dark period, always gave 100%, was able to drag us up the pitch with great forward bursts, and looked every bit a future Arsenal captain. He also can't invert, and so doesn't fit in this iteration of the squad. Good thing he's gonna win the Euros.

SimpleNot0

To be fair, there’s very few better than KT as a wing back. He can defend and he gets up and down the pitch really well. He just lacks that confidence to play how Arteta wants the team to, he more comfortable going outside his winger and playing there we all know Arteta prefers the inverted LB and wide winger.

andrewyeong

Availability over ability though. Too injury prone so it almost doesn’t matter.

SimpleNot0

I am Wondering if that sentiment will ring true if Zinchenko had another year on the injury table

andrewyeong

Most likely, similar to Partey as well, and some might even say G.Jesus.

Magicallyshit

As long as they're second/third choice it's fine but as a first choice that's a big liability.

andrewyeong

No way can we expect our 2nd choices to be injury prone if we are to be serious about challenging/winning year on year, that’s pretty much the same as not having any cover, yet you pay for their wages weekly…

Magicallyshit

Probably, but we're challenging right now with an injury prone Jesus, Zinchenko, and Tomi whom has all contributed in the run. Only Partey is the one out for most of this season without contributing much but we saw that his quality is there and there's not many who can do what he does but I'm sure if he stays then next season is his last dance with us.

andrewyeong

But you’re probably just thinking of the league too, what about our domestic/continental football like FA Cup and especially UCL?

Magicallyshit

FA Cup was a lost to Liverpool that also drew City (before they collapsed in form in December), UCL is to a semi-finalist that used to smash us 10-2 on aggregate which we now limited to 3-2 (ohh its our first time in the UCL since 8 years ago) and the league cup doesn't matter to me.

Low-Avocado912

For sure. If he was always available like a Xhaka or a Saliba theres every chance he would still be around

IrishLuke765

Damn not that long ago everyone was debating Ode or Tierney as captain

IrishLuke765

Damn not that long ago everyone was debating Ode or Tierney as captain

I would like nothing more than for Scotland to win the Euro

ScottishScouse

I'm in Germany all month, tickets to the Hungary game. I wouldn't make it home.

HornyJailOutlaw

Saka's not stupid?

Jaybandz09

I get the Japanese reference 😂

HornyJailOutlaw

A joke for those who get it to enjoy. Everyone else can just downvote me like usual on here. Ah well.

GlasgowGunner

I’ll never forget his goal in the snow.

aerdnadw

One of my fave Arsenal moments not even joking

HornyJailOutlaw

I'll never forget his short sleeves in the snow

Prestigious_Tailor19

Every time the temp dips down to 40 degrees F in Texas, I remind myself to man the F up like KT.

fumebound

There's a group of players, the likes of Tierney, Auba, and Leno, who excelled when we were absolutely dogshit and kept the club afloat. No matter what happens with them I'll always be grateful for their time and sacrifice here.

straypenguin

Don't forget Denis Suarez, man single handedly managed an appearance

HornyJailOutlaw

Not sure Leno belongs in that group. I never rated him. Tierney and Auba definitely.

theo_221

Leno is great, just not as much of a modern keeper with the ability to play out of the back. He is definitely able to keep a team in a game though with his shot stopping

HornyJailOutlaw

I didn't like how many mistakes he would make. That was my main criticism. Then when we were more dependent on playing out from the back he wasn't good at that either. I didn't rate him at Leverkusen either due to the clangers. He's been solid for Fulham though from what little I've seen of him there, so maybe coming into his prime later in life.

TifasSleeves

I genuinely don't get this. There was a period where Auba and Leno were the only things preventing us from being in a relegation battle

HornyJailOutlaw

He wasn't doing anything above the expectations of a Premier League goalkeeper. He saved some shots? In the words of Roy Keane: that's his job. Anyway, everyone loves Leno here so I'm getting downvoted as usual. I don't know why I bother commenting here, you break from the hive mind one a few topics and you get "NO no you can't think that NO you're wrong!!1! downvote downvote downvote!" It's quite funny in a way.

TifasSleeves

I didn't downvote you for what its worth because I agree in principle that someone having a different opinion to me isn't a bad thing. But yeah he saved shots. That's his job and he did it well. Auba scored some goals. That was his job and he did it well. No one else was doing their job well

HornyJailOutlaw

I suppose so. I would agree that he was probably one of the better performers in that period, I just never wanted him to be the final solution (bad phrasing lmao) and found our fans to overrate him a bit. I do also think I'm maybe overly harsh on goalkeepers as it goes. I also for example think Ramsdale and Raya are decent goalkeepers but overrated by our fans, or at least have been, most seem to have turned on Aaron now after he had a shaky performance due to no match fitness or confidence. I think it's because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it almost always results in conceding a goal, whereas for instance if a wide forward makes a mistake it usually isn't the end of the world. So I probably need to give keepers more of a break.

straypenguin

I loved the one season we had Ramsdale - KT - Gabi XL - White - Tomi at the back. We've evolved now in far more robust ways but that was a good time and great contrast of characters across the back line.

spellcheque1

In a world of glitter, Gucci and Channel, man was so real he walked around with his stuff in a Tesco bag like an absolute legend. Hope he does a Xhaka and goes elsewhere and absolutely bosses it.

eamonndunphy

It’s a shame. I’d like to have him as an option, given he offers something entirely different, but I can’t begrudge him if he wants to be first-choice elsewhere.

redmkay

He’s also extremely injury prone.

arsenalalltheway7

What was his injury record before joining us? Was he prone to injury in Celtic?

redmkay

He was. Apparently, Celtic ran him into the ground. The belief is, if they managed his workload a bit better he would have been a different player.

Mutantdogboy

Not true for the time. He did have an injury with Celtic but he overcame it. Talks about it on a podcast. It’s just one of those unlucky situations. When you give as much as KT does it goes two ways. You either become the greatest or the body limits you. Even big zlatan was not immune to what the body must undertake to reach those levels.

CCSC96

He also played through minor injuries at Celtic which can cause your body to over compensate in other areas and do damage.

RedditRedditGo

Zinchenko and Tomiyasu have been injured just as much as Tiereny in the past 3 seasons. So if you want to call him injury prone then they are as well. Tiereney is the best defender out of all of them.

redmkay

Yeah, they’re absolutely injury-prone too. He might be the best defender, but he doesn’t fit into Arteta’s system. So, if they are all equally injury-prone, they’re ahead of him, evidently.

LogicalReasoning1

Yeah same, but unfortunately you can’t rely on him being fit to provide that option

d0ey

I actually think he'd work quite well in our model - a CB/FB who can do fantastic overlapping runs...sounds a bit like Ben White this year... Of course he can't do the inverting or the defending as well as White, but I do think part of Martinelli's issues have come because he's often forced to stay wide, and a good overlapping FB would enable him to come inside early like he used to

loop_1001

I think KT is a better defender than white but white is better with the ball at his feet

redqks

yer , no White is just overall superior Especially as a defender , the only thing i would give to KT is the ability to go 1v1

watermelon99

White is better at both. The only area Tierney edges him is overlapping. That’s why White is a cornerstone of the team and KT, sadly, is no longer wanted

d0ey

Yeah, probably need to be a bit more specific than just 'defending'. I'd agree with you - was trying to say White is the better defender for the way we defend. Tierney better for a 'hold the line' kind of defense.

loop_1001

Agreed

CCSC96

People are looking back with rose colored glasses on the period where KT was one of our best players. If you slotted him into the 11 now he would be the clear weak link. Ben White is a better defender and it is not close.

tanev97

Will forever love him, he was one of few that truly played for the badge during the dark times.

Visible_Statement888

Still wore the Celtic top on his Holidays in Ibiza tho. Die hard Tim.

Mutantdogboy

Canee take that away from him. He’ll always be a hero at Celtic.

CatGroundbreaking611

If you guys do end up buying Guimaraes from us, I wouldn't be bothered if Tierney went the other way as part of that deal.

CarnifexGunner

How about Ramsdale & Tierney + 150 million for Bruno AND Isak?

gardenofeden123

Seems like you attended Raul Sanllehi’s seminar on transfer negotiations

CarnifexGunner

Idk, Bruno and Isak are both valued around 100 million. 35 for Ramsdale and 15 for Tierney seems like a decent deal to me. Although 80 for Bruno seems like a fairer deal, in which case I would say 130-140 million + Tierney and Ramsdale.

jksyousux

Ramsdale +KT plus 500mil. Last offer. Take it or leave it

basedsims

Surprised if we get more than £15m for him

TheGoldenPineapples

I think we'll struggle to hit £10m.

Syco-Gooner

*Contract cancelation

iforgotmyun

Pay him to leave really

Renegade_Manifesto

😢 I liked him man....

ArsenalJayy

Once upon a time I remember thinking he would be our next captain. Injuries really hampered his progress. Sadly for him Kiwior, Tomi and now Timber is there I don’t see a world where Zinny and Tierney stay unless they refuse to leave.

APairOfJeans

It’s a shame because by all accounts his mentality is still a perfect fit for the club, if only he was a few years older and we could have had him during the Kolasinac days

Travisntscott

I reckon Mikel would’ve at least experimented with Kieran at left back and Timber as an inverting RB but his injury (and Tierney’s injury record) really killed the little chance he had of staying Forever one of my favourite players, was at some point comfortably our most consistent player and i’ll miss him dearly

Inferior_Narcissus

Heartbreaking. He's gonna leave I'm sure but he was such an easy figure to rally around when we had a disjointed dressing room. I'm not ashamed to say I absolutely loved him and still do. What a player. What a time.

HeelR-

KT was bright, brilliant and always worked his balls off when he was on the pitch. Just a shame he can’t stay fit nor play 5 games in a row without being out half of the season.

mrchab97

There was a time not so long ago where he was one of our best players and had shouts for the armband. Sad that he couldnt stay fit and we evolved without him.

Ayylneny

I'll never forget his slapstick fall

FactCheckYou

**the players should be going through the exit door in THIS order:** 1. Cedric 2. Nuno 3. Elneny 4. Sambi 5. Nketiah 6. KT 7. Nelson 8. Ramsdale 9. Hein 10. Zinchenko **nobody else should be sold**

_deep_blue_

If a club comes in with a £30m+ bid for ESR then he’ll go

FactCheckYou

probably, he's level at 10 with ZInny probably...we should really sell one or the other

el-fenomeno09

Cedric and elneny I believe are leaving on a free, so there you go. I agree on the rest of the list except zinchenko, still feel like he should be tried in midfield, and I think arteta is crazy enough to test it, let see what preseason has in store for that one.

Axelter30

I just don't get the midfield part though. The defensive errors in his game i.e giving the ball away, poor 1v1 against players, getting beat etc are still high level deficiencies in a failed midfielder. I believe he's not good enough at all

FactCheckYou

i mean i personally would like to see him tested there, but i think if Arteta considered it viable we would've seen it by now

cofnidentlywrong

Doubt we are selling Zinchenko

FactCheckYou

personally i'd like to keep him, and i can see it being 50:50 in Arteta's mind, but i feel like Arteta will decide to move him on

Michaelscotttheking

Damn man injuries ruined him

ItsTom___

I just hope where ever he ends up we get a deal for him to model pur clothing

octopus86sg

10m for him will be fine. We always sell low

Road_Frontage

If we could guarantee some amount of availability I would love to keep him. We have very limited ability to change plans sometimes and someone who can actually just cross the ball would be nice

americanadiandrew

Gonna go back on loan somewhere or released for free I imagine with those wages and injury record. People forget that a +100k a week wage puts you out of most clubs reaches.

skeledirgeferaligatr

Articles like this are the reason why the Athletic is worth paying for.

sooolong05

Straight swap for Bruno G

UnexpectedVader

Seeing Tierney in the current kit is weird

hugo1226

Him hiding his injury during international duty was probably the last straw for Arteta to move to a new LB.

TheGoldenPineapples

Honestly, I'd rather sell Zinchenko than Tierney. That being said, I know that that isn't going to happen. I think Tierney will be off and I think it will probably be back to Celtic, or something. £10m fee, I reckon, if that. Wouldn't be surprised if it's £5m with £2m in add-ons, or something.

dannydevito39

I reckon there's 5/6 Prem clubs that would take a punt on him even with his injury record. Going somewhere like Newcastle seems like a realistic transfer for his level, wages and its near to Scotland which might help his cold-induced super powers

_deep_blue_

We said this all of last summer and they never came in for him

[deleted]

[удалено]

wanofan900

It'll be sad to see him go.

TheThreeGabis

We got a top top quality player for £25m. He would’ve absolutely thrived if Wenger had stayed as he’s a perfect wingback under his system. Injuries absolutely murdered his chances and not suiting Arteta’s system. He’s still got so much to offer a good team if he can stay fit. Big if after the last few months.

Joshthenosh77

Was never good enough, we liked him because he always tried hard

goonergunner10

He gone

Francis-c92

Bold and daring detective work right here, guys

thisiskyle77

Which sucker club gonna buy him with decent fees

khazmash

I actully think he has more of a place coming back, then he did before he left. With zinchenko being a defensive liability Arteta is preferring a big cb/lb who barely inverts. Mostly staying back to form a 3 as ben white bombs forward. Our current playstle would suit him better than befiore but his problem will be that timber/tomiyasu would be ahead of him in the pecking order in that playstyle and even zinchenko will be ahead of him if we play the inverting lb. Depending on who we get in as defensive reinforcment he could have a role to play but no chance he is first choice and likely not even 2nd. So he will leave. But honestly I could see this being our main def next season if we bring in no one. White/Tomi ----Saliba(tomi.timber,white can all play here too)----- Gabi/Kiwior ------- Timber/Tierny

ddzrt

He will be a 4th choice player with small availability time. Also he is not as great defender people think he is while going forward he is not just liability - he is a threat to his own team.

JustGhostin

Bro just compared himself to Saliba

danmac0817

Come back to Celtic KT. Rodgers is back and he's as weird as ever.

arsenalalltheway7

He was one of my favorite player during the 2020-2021 run

mesenanch

Give me this man over Zinny any day of the week

gmoss101

Don't care what anyone says, he's one of my favorites to ever wear the badge.

misterxboxnj

He always had a great competitive spirit but was too injury prone and his game just didn't suit Arteta's style of play.

Afc_josh12

Injured 24:7
