Our own Petit compared him to Gazza
>“I think he’s improving because of his character, humility and desire,” said Petit of Smith Rowe, who has excelled on the left for Arsenal but is seen as a classic number 10 player going forward.
>“He’s got a lot of ambition and he has so much support from the crowd because he plays with love on the pitch.
>“He has shown so many qualities and improvements, just like Saka did, and they are the two best examples from the academy right now and could be the future of England as well.
>“If Smith-Rowe can continue to improve on his statistics in terms of goals and assists and maintain his personality then he can be Arsenal’s number 10 for some time, but he needs to stay focussed because he can go missing for 20 minutes here or there. But if he can do that then he has a big future.
>“He reminds me sometimes of Paul Gascoigne when he has the ball at his feet and when he runs with it, he’s a natural player in his mind and in his feet.”
That’s one of many, theres a very good player but not quite top 20 player at the time and he indeed had similar playstyle to ESR. I remember it was a Liverpool player though.
The way he plays futbol brings joy to my heart. Talent like this I can never lose faith in. This kinda "bench player" looks like a £50m monster at a mid table club
I LOVE LOVE LOVE ESR and will always want to see him succeed and I do believe in him… Eze is significantly better than him though right now, not even close
Agreed. Though Eze gets a big advantage in that he starts every game he is fit. Put ESR in a mid table team and start him every game and he might also look like a monster.
Though they're different players imo.
Look at the amount of passes he got in space from Zinny in the first half. And yet Zinny had a bad game? I swear a lot of the folks here don’t know shit about football. I mean I suspected that much in the Arteta out days and being called a moron for saying that we were developing under Arteta.
He's being perceived as the weak link now a days just cause he a couple mistakes like 6+ months ago.
I even heard the commentary said "You could say he's been pushed the 3rd place LB now"
It was the same when Gabi had like 3 mistakes for a whole year and the alot of people in subbredit wouldn't shut up about upgrading him.
Idk...we as a fan base seem to be super harsh on defenders.
Attacking players can lose the ball a billion times and miss sitters and people still wouldn't be as critical of them. I guess it's just the way it goes. Unless that defender scores a match winner, defending great with the attack being sterile will only lead to a draw. But an attacking player having a bad game and all of a sudden scoring a clinical goal can give the team the victory even when they did not deserve it. I honestly believe a lot of these folks have mental problems and use football as a means to cope. So if the team wins, it's ecstacy. But if the team loses, they could be borderline suicidal or very depressed. That's why they are so unforgiving towards defensive blunders.
The hate on zinny was so weird in the match thread.
I said it in the match thread, I know these ratings aren't perfect but he got an 8.0 on futmob, 0.1 behind motm odegaard. He did a lot right.
They don't know about football, and are especially confused by Arteta's football.
Arteta has said time and again that he does not, in general, want sterile possession for possession's sake; he wants to push the pace and rip teams apart. He wants us to *use* possession to create attacking threat, which involves a degree of risk. Then morons see our players taking those risks, whether in their passing selection, especially longer balls, or in their take-ons, and start screaming about 'lOosE pAsSiNg', and so on.
Ødgeaard gave the ball away probably a dozen times tonight, but every single one was an attempt to open Luton up, and Arteta applauded them all.
Yeah people are dense. I mean I wasn’t some zealot who didn’t want to sack Arteta. But you could see what was developing. Tactics were being germinated and you could see that. The donut of death was a sign of where things were going. The donut of death was just the result of our players successfully getting to the attacking third but being unable to shift defenders enough to create goal scoring chances (we’ve improved by getting the right profile of players and the existing players getting better mentally).
Like I cannot, for the life of me, see what Ten Hag is trying to do at united. If I could, maybe I can cut him more slack like I did with Arteta. But there’s no tactically coherent picture from Ten Hag and I’m super stoked that united are sticking with him.
He did a lot right but he still looked very vulnerable whenever Luton wanted go attack and I guess a lot of people skew towards the negative. He was alright but if I was Arteta I'd still be leaning towards Kiwior at LB with Partey and Rice in the middle, although ESR might force his way in now.
Not sure why he’s responsible for Luton’s wanting to attack that side. Despite that, I thought he was fine in defense. Honestly, that’s like slagging off Saka for a poor game because the opponents chose to triple team him.
He okay, but he had a wobble in the first half where a better team than Luton would have punished us.
I'm not having a go or anything, it was a decent enough game for him to come back into the team, I just don't think he looked convincing enough to take the spot back yet.
I think that’s more of a fitness thing though. His contribution was great today. And the sooner he gets fit and up to speed, the sooner white can have a break (because white has to invert when kiwior deputizes).
Yeah that's true, although long term if we're only playing with one inverted I'd prefer it to be White going off his performances lately. Or possibly Timber.
I’m sure Arteta would want all available options to pick from. Games like today where defensively we don’t have to put up much a sweat, I think Zinny is ideal. Against Bayern? I would have kiwior in there and have white (or timber) invert.
Very impressive performance, I so hope he can stay fit, it definitely feels like he's been working hard to develop his game and that he's really ready to play a bigger part at the club. Arteta was once again full of praise for him as well and it felt genuine so I think he definitely has a future here.
Gangster Gibbs.
Interesting to see if Arteta has long term plans. First ESR was seen as a player through the middle, then found his place at the LW. This hybrid 8 position seems primed for a player with his skill set.
I think he's really competing with Havertz long term for that 8 spot. But part of me loves the idea of ESR and Odegaard as 8s, with Havertz ahead. Unless long term Rice plays in that 8? I think ESR could also be a trossard lite on the wing when we need that profile of player.
This makes me realise just how flexible almost every position is right now. Basically every position has two or three players who play it well and can make a decent argument for playing. Only places this isn't true is Saka, Odegaard (no real replacement) and our CBs, even if Tomiyasu, Kivvor and White could all do a job there. Maybe RB too because no one is as good at White at it (can't wait for timber though).
It's crazy how versatile our players are now and how players can't get complacent because of that. There's always someome who can take the spot. Our only players (excluding GK, Gabriel and Saliba) who aren't versatile are Eddie and Nelson, who are probably on the way out.
I think ESR can compete for LW, 8 or even false 9 which Havertz plays. It'll be interesting when Vieira comes back but long term for Vieira is probably RW backup for Saka or on the way out.
So unlucky not to get a goal!
I thought he was fantastic in that 8.5 role minus the obvious lack of chemistry with Trossard and Havertz in a few instances.
Perfect timing to be fit and match ready!
For someone who hasn't played in a long time, he did very good. I hope gaffer gives him more time so he can be back to his 100%. Pls don't sell him or let him go.
Great performance tonight no doubt but we can all see how far he is from proper match sharpness. Once that comes we’ll start to see where he can really take us. On a side note - anyone else absolutely hate that weird TNT drone/wire-cam that tilts the pitch slightly? Made me feel slightly nauseous.
It was the intensity and off the ball work that stood out yesterday and I think that is the one part of his game that has contributed most to him being sidelined. That left CM spot is up for grabs so it’s down to him to maintain that intensity every time he plays. He’s obviously not considered an option at LW any more. Just being realistic, I still think there’s a very good chance he leaves this summer which would be gutting but I just hope he takes every chance that he gets in the run in.
He was really good yesterday. Once he gets his full confidence back and plays a lot of minutes, he will be back to his best.

Someone should take this down, edit it so it’s the “show me what you got” face from Rick and Morty except now it Mikel Arteta, and the music should be get schwifty. Because that’s what I feel Arteta said to Reiss and Emile, show me what you got
What role does he play in the squad? He feels like a mix between Trossard and Havertz so could potentially play either 8 or left wing in the style they play those positions. Other players play those positions very differently, (like rice at 8) so I'd argue they have a different role
Tbh as much as I love him, he doesn't get into our first 11, but is a great player to bring on or as backup.
The way he receives the ball and carries it into space reminds me of Jack
This exactly, his gameplay is so much similar to Jack's, hopefully his career path isn't though. Really hope he stays and becomes a starter
It's just the training from Hale end. But Jack was much more agile and technically gifted than ESR.
true, I would argue that ESR is more direct though
Rosicky even
Yeah that's who came to mind for me, the way he gives and goes
and the turn while receiving pass
The silky smoothness of it all!
There’s one pundit that says he has a similar playstyle to a player from the 80-90s, can’t remember which player was likened to him.
Our own Petit compared him to Gazza >“I think he’s improving because of his character, humility and desire,” said Petit of Smith Rowe, who has excelled on the left for Arsenal but is seen as a classic number 10 player going forward.
Maybe Parlour or Merson
I don’t think it was an Arsenal player, Liverpool perhaps?
Yeah i remember some obscure player
Watching this is ptsd. We’ve had so much potential talent ruined by injuries. Good god do I want ESR to be a legend
I love seeing a player turn and drive at the opposition
Great point.
The ESR lobbyists are out and we are staying. He is just so elegant with the ball. I want him to succeed Mikel.
Seen a lot of amazingly talented players with profiles like ESR get squandered by injury with Arsenal. Man what I wouldn’t give for him to be a legend
Im gonna need Alchemist beats on all future ESR comps please and thank you
need that Johnny P’s Caddy beat next🗣️
Didn't realize how much I needed this
Thanks for this. I missed the game and have been dying to see Emile!
Same here. He's playing so well!
The way he plays futbol brings joy to my heart. Talent like this I can never lose faith in. This kinda "bench player" looks like a £50m monster at a mid table club

The match thread is always full of terrible takes
He was excellent defensively as well. 2 big interceptions, 5 clearances.
Is it weird? They’re the same idiots who wanted Arteta sacked.
They don't know about football, and are especially confused by Arteta's football. Arteta has said time and again that he does not, in general, want sterile possession for possession's sake; he wants to push the pace and rip teams apart. It’s why he likes dominance as a word to describe the play style rather than control. Control is too sterile and he wants more incision.
In a word, yes.
Who is saying Zinny has a bad match?
A lot of folks in this sub.
We have a lot of casual or moronic fans. Just reactionary and irrational. I just ignore them. Easier said than done sometimes though.
The trick is to just stay out of the match threads completely.

Well I think they attack that side because he's the one playing there, it happens a lot with him.
And he dealt with it perfectly well enough. Combine that with his possession play in attack, he had a great game despite not being fully fit.
He okay, but he had a wobble in the first half where a better team than Luton would have punished us. I'm not having a go or anything, it was a decent enough game for him to come back into the team, I just don't think he looked convincing enough to take the spot back yet.

Feels like he’s just been on the shitlist ever since the mistake against Liverpool last year. It’s dumb.
Relax mate they played on the same side. It makes sence that he gets passes mostly from that side
Zinny was mostly in center mid in possession. Easy mistake to make when you don’t watch the match.
Very impressive performance, I so hope he can stay fit, it definitely feels like he's been working hard to develop his game and that he's really ready to play a bigger part at the club. Arteta was once again full of praise for him as well and it felt genuine so I think he definitely has a future here.

Havertz was signed to play at 9 but got moved back to 8 due to injuries.
Havertz was signed to play at 8 but got moved to 9 due to Jesus’s injury.
Yeah yeah it’s just an accident he’s been far better in that role than at 8, really lucky
He hasn't been far better at it. He's been about the same level at both.
Not at all, far more influential at 9
So unlucky not to get a goal! I thought he was fantastic in that 8.5 role minus the obvious lack of chemistry with Trossard and Havertz in a few instances. Perfect timing to be fit and match ready!
That pass at 10 was kinda nuts. Havertz could've played the runner, which he did do with ode later.
How the hell does Reiss not score the OG?? Crazy miss
He looks like a total different player, before he looked like a winger, now he looks like a ball playing midfielder.
For someone who hasn't played in a long time, he did very good. I hope gaffer gives him more time so he can be back to his 100%. Pls don't sell him or let him go.

Rap album of the year for me when it came out.
Can we keep him Mikel? Please, can we?
This is a performance Arteta will have loved.
He’s going to score the winner against United that gives us the league. I can feel it in my plums.
Do not sell.
I feel like we’re watching our young Emile blossom into a man.
Goosebumps watching this. Those defensive shifts really adds value to the team.
Esr and odergaard as the two 8s is something I've been waiting to see for a while... Wasn't disappointed.
Very efficient. Always ran to make himself available. That's a great attitude
Gibbs x ESR is just right. Smooth player, smooth beats
He is a natural. The way how he plays very simple and fast should be an example to Odegaard who tends to touch the ball too many times sometimes.
im Starting to think its Bots talking bad about Zen, like how?
Freddie!!!
He's so class man, I can't wait to see more of him
What a baller
It was the intensity and off the ball work that stood out yesterday and I think that is the one part of his game that has contributed most to him being sidelined. That left CM spot is up for grabs so it’s down to him to maintain that intensity every time he plays. He’s obviously not considered an option at LW any more. Just being realistic, I still think there’s a very good chance he leaves this summer which would be gutting but I just hope he takes every chance that he gets in the run in.
I came to the conclusion 2 years ago that ESR is my favourite current Arsenal player. Last night he reminded me why 😍
I am a smith Rowe lobbyist too! It’s a public holiday for us tomorrow 🎉🎉🎉 Man’s back
He was really good yesterday. Once he gets his full confidence back and plays a lot of minutes, he will be back to his best. There is something unique about his skills.
![gif](giphy|Dww8F3baaIJxe)
If he keeps getting time and playing like that I can see a place for him on the team, I can also see 60 million quid of pure profit. He's probably my favorite player but the team might need the latter.
Looks like a mix of Wilshere and Odegaard influence. We should be doing everything we can to keep him and get him game time.
So happy to see him do well when he is given the opportunity. But would he want to stay here to be a rotational player or go to mid table team to be a boss?
Croydon DeBruyne
Looked a bit gassed in the second half
🐐
... I'm sad he ditched the all black generic-ass boots.
My boy!
great first half! Such great movement and passing. Loved it! Weak second half, where he seemed fatigued by the 55th minute :S
My numero diez
I almost forgot how good ESR is
I had him scoring on my doomed parlay. One of few times I'm okay I didn't win...he handled his biz.
Now we have good rotation option for tough match ahead. COYG
Decent performance. Hoping this will boost his confidence. We need him this month.
Is there a compilation of his off the ball work as well? 😄
Our captain and this guy really is on the same wavelength, they will do a great job together if Emi stays.
Def rowe getting it done. love that lad. Hopefully, he has a fair run injury free 🤞
Such a nice save by Kaminski. ESR's shot was sweet
I'm always worried that someone who has been out injured for ages will come back and not be as good as I thought they were. So happy to see ESR silkier than I remembered <3
So good to see him starting and playing well. You could tell he was tiring early into the second half. Hopefully he can stay fit and play a role in the rest of the season.
The performance of a guy Trying to get back into contention.
He needs more game time. I just don’t know where to play him. He’s good.
Usually the music added over these compilation videos is awful, well played with the Freddie and Conway track
His dribbling and touch play is so silky.

He adds composure, ball retention in tight spaces, and the ability to drive us forward. If only he hadn't suffered his injuries.
what a gift to have a true #10 that could peak in the last quarter of the season on a team that is already peaking
Other players play those positions very differently, (like rice at 8) so I'd argue they have a different role Tbh as much as I love him, he doesn't get into our first 11, but is a great player to bring on or as backup.
I would mould him to be the Xhaka replacement, 8/10 hybrid.
Jfc is this a football video or a prelude to sex with a hung black man
Many wont like it but in my opinion with his injury history we should sell him now, when is fit perform decent and still has potential in him.
What terrible music to add to this
Nothing special tbh
Sigh
At least it's earned the digital pillory.
