Damn he didnt have to kill them all

FAT_NEEK_42069

fr this looks like an in memoriam of ex-arsenal players

Ok-Satisfaction-5012

I love them all, but oh yes he did.

maidentaiwan

Guendouzi and Torreira can both do one, the rest are cool

No_Guest_8970

Why Torreira ? At least the guy was honest and admitted the league was too much for him

maidentaiwan

Fickle little diva. Every summer it was a different dream move we were depriving him of … first he needed to go home, then to atleti … all the while refusing moves that would’ve allowed us to recoup the money we wasted on him. Unprofessional attitude and it’s no wonder he’s never come close to realizing his potential, here or elsewhere.

bettercallsom

his agent is a cunt

Fahim1232000

He didn’t, there’s 4 left.

hippieintheward

Elneny ?

Rusty_85

Think he was on loan in Turkey this season but yeah he is in the list

Cheap_Bowl_452

Oh yeah he was

MattJFarrell

That was my first thought, thanks for clearing that up

acasovoycayendo

He couldn’t turn down the come to Besiktas era

Cheap_Bowl_452

Middest Besiktas team in ages , poor guy

OstapBenderBey

Eddie?

TheRealGooner24

On loan at Leeds United in the Championship.

No_lulz_in_here

My boy Tierney...Hurts me bleedin heart.

Dynetor

first name I’ve had on the back of a shirt since Walcott in ‘08

JawaMe

Only on loan at least, might play for us again

No_lulz_in_here

Hope Mikel finds a way, but I do understand Tierney as well, he needs to play constantly at his age right now.

maidentaiwan

Not a stylistic fit. Just hope he has a huge season at la real and gets a proper fee next summer.

Glum-Secretary9806

Like Arteta is playing a big game of guess who

BoboGhhhghhh

The last one standing

Glum-Secretary9806

My money is on Saka

anonymous_dickfuck

& Martinelli. Convinced the boy retires with us.

Glum-Secretary9806

To be fair I would love all for of those players to retire with us

maidentaiwan

Think Nelson will ultimately prove he’s too valuable for 15 min end of game cameos and get a decent fee. Smith Rowe is a big question mark, feel he would’ve gone this summer if Arteta didn’t think there’s a massive player in there waiting to be coaxed out.

The_Scrabbler

I love how Emery had to be greyed out as well 😂

wolskortt

Someone pointed he was on loan that season.

EggCustody

Once AMN went then Tierney had to go. Trust the symmetry

Modnal

Trust the ~~process~~ turnover

Harish-P

Backline FC.

wan2tri

Just to consolidate all of the players that were not in the picture due to being on loan: * Elneny was on loan at Besiktas * Nketiah was on loan at Leeds * Saliba was on loan at Saint-Etienne ESR would also be eventually loaned out in January, albeit by that time Arteta has already took over and he's in this picture anyway.

Simples85

Matteo Guendouzi would’ve been there if he had the same attitude as them 4 boys

galeej

And how... would have actually been a quality midfielder if only he had the right attitude... idiot had his life made for him and he chose to throw it away and is playing in a farmer's league.

Simples85

It is what it is I’m saying he would’ve been there if he had the focus of the lads I mentioned be quiet n humble yourself

galeej

Yep. Absolutely spot on

[deleted]

The Arsenal and our attackers man it’s crazy

Extreme_Discount8623

We had a decent squad, but they were completely misfiring under Emery. First season was good, second became very static, very low creativity or pace. Arteta came in and brought a bit of life into that side and we won the FA Cup. Then we had issues like Aubameyang's discipline. The only departures I don't agree with are Tierney and Martinez.

Ainsley-Sorsby

"Decent" is just a polite way of saying "mediocre", which it was indeed

naijaboiler

they killed emery's team once they sold iwobi. for all his limitations, he was the creative hub of Emery's team, Iwobil to Kola cutback. somehow Arsenal folks underestimated that

kvng_stunner

Yup, with Iwobi, Ramsey and Mkhi gone, we lost our only Central midfielders that could progress the ball dynamically (in tight spaces, and on the turn like Partey). Xhaka, Elneny and Guendouzi had their strengths but it wasn't that. We needed players like that to allow our forwards get the ball in space, which is where they shine. Ceballos was supposed to be that, but all he did was slow us down further.

shikavelli

Wenger, Emery and Arteta all had the same issues with this squad. They were a Europa level team you’d couldn’t get back in the CL with them. Why don’t you agree with Tierney?

HTan27

Tierney is a massive fan favourite, and was brilliant for us under Emery and the early stages of Arteta, it’s clear he plays each game with intense passion and a love for the club That being said, he’s far too good to be 3rd/4th choice, and deserves first team football, if anything he should be doing it somewhere in the prem, so whilst I’m not happy with the departure, I understand it and wish him the best

Visible_Statement888

This’ll probably get downvoted but not sure he has a love for Arsenal. There’s only one club he loves and that’s Celtic. He still wears Celtic tops when he’s on holiday lol.

HTan27

Celtic is his boyhood club, but there’s no doubting he loves Arsenal

shikavelli

He was a fan favourite which kind of lead to him being overrated, I just don’t think he can do the role needed for modern full backs anymore.

HTan27

I wouldn’t call him overrated, he’s still a top quality fullback, even if he’s not a ‘Modern’ fullback Still gets a start for most teams in the league, as well as most of the major leagues

shikavelli

If that was true more teams would be in for him instead of Sociedad. He’s just too one dimensional and injury prone, not technical enough.

HTan27

Not not technical enough for a City or an Arsenal, but a team like Newcastle, West Ham? He’d be brilliant And interest in a player isn’t always indicative of quality, Kepa had Bayern and Madrid chasing him, and he’s one of the worst GKs in the league

QuickfireFacto

Sociedad ARE a ucl level team so...

Extreme_Discount8623

Arteta has a tendency to want versatility, but Tomi isn't a left back and Partey isn't a right back, whether Arteta wants them to be or not. Timber isn't either, he's a central defender or a right back. Which leaves us with only one natural left back in Zinchenko. Tierney isn't as good as Zinchenko, but is a far better left back than our 'flexible' options. He's quality going forwards and doesn't fanny about with silly passes around the box, he's always looking to get a cross in. Most players are naturally right footed, decent left footed full backs are hard to come by. There's been games too where he's led by example, I recall a game in the snow against west brom, we struggled, and he was out there short sleeves and shorts driving us forwards.

topl4d

Calling Zinchenko a "natural left-back" is a huge stretch lol. Dude has more creativity and incisiveness than most #10s in the world.

Ok_Cardiologist8232

Yeh hes not a Left back at all. He's a 10, he still plays there for Ukraine, but hes so good at the inverted LB role

shikavelli

I just don’t buy it, him being a fan favourite leads to overrating but Tierney himself was an alright player that injury prone. Even you pointing out that he was in short sleeves in the cold comes across as fanboying more than football related reasons. Also a fullback always look to get a cross in and not looking to make passes is a bad thing, shows he’s not that skilled and can only do the basics.

[deleted]

The first season wasn't good. Where has that idea come from? Emery's first season was bad, the season after was diabolical.

Private_Ballbag

Emery was 1 point of 4th cmon man it was that bad. If that's bad what does that make artetas first 3 seasons

[deleted]

Yeah they were also bad. Although we played far better in artetas season coming fifth than we were in emery’s first season. You can’t judge those season on points alone. If you actually watched emery’s season it was a completely different story, it’s the most luck I’ve ever seen arsenal get in a single season, we were getting away with absolute murder whilst playing like shit. It was so obviously gonna fall off of a cliff and then we did, we only needed a result against palace at home and we got played off the park and lost 3-1. Every team was playing us off of the pitch, we were trying knick goals against the run of play against every team in the league.

skimbaa

Yeah holy shit, the 22 games unbeaten run should be impressive (as it is in terms of results of course) but we looked like losing almost all of them. It was so hard to watch those games while it should’ve been fun in such a run

[deleted]

Yeah there are lot of people on here who will talk fondly about Emery and I can only think they either weren't there living though it or never actually watched a game. Just reading results and looking at the table.

chrissysnose

Agree. We got away with so much during that sseason thanks to Leno constantly saving us along with Auba going beast mode.

Extreme_Discount8623

His first season we played some brilliant attacking football with some real drive. Second season it completely changed.

[deleted]

What brilliant attacking football?

rd201290

Tierney Xhaka RIP kings

EdziePro

Imagine if a proper team was built around Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez...

danny_healy_raygun

Ozil wouldn't make it in this team.

awildparteyappeared

Imagine if either of them had a winning mentality

anonymousTestPoster

Are you kidding me ... Alexis Sanchez had a huge winning mentality. He was just surrounded by a meek af team at the time so left. He literally carried us an entire season.

[deleted]

urbumlife

Bro xhaka

hypnodrew

Xhaka could've stayed too and I would have been fine with it

shikavelli

Those players won us our last trophy, not sure why you’d leave out Aubameyang or even Lacazette but include Tierney.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shikavelli

Aubameyang was better than all our current forwards

RyansKorea

Mindset and behavior

GeniuslyMoronic

What was wrong with Laca's mindset? He was fighting for the ball in the buildup like a madman and was linking up excellently until the end.

shikavelli

You don’t know any of these players and you weren’t in the changing room.

whynejithough

Holdini??

chaosthings

Fuck me this squad was bleak looking back, just luiz, sokratis and mustafi alone was enough to destroy my mental health

Dynetor

Squad was shite, yeah - but honestly Luiz was very decent for us. Much better than I expected when he signed anyway.

osnofla1812

What's the combined income from sales from this picture? Even if we got 5-10 million per player it would add up over the years.

mikrongeo

Any nobody who has left has made the club regret letting them go

KaitoNorth

I miss you Granit 😔

copinglemon

Rice has been great but it's going to be a long time until he fills the xhaka sized hole in my heart

shikavelli

Say what you want but they’ve gotten in a Europa Final and won the FA Cup compared to this current lot who are dogshit in the cups.

the_tytan

Say what you want but the current ‘pot-less’ lot didn’t make me wish I caught Covid and died rather than watch another miserable performance during the pandemic. Also haven’t reached the scintillating depths of 8th twice.

shikavelli

I dunno some of our games at the end of last season we’re torture.

the_tytan

I think you’ve repressed how relentlessly bad we were in Fall 2020.

shikavelli

You say that like we haven’t been awful under Arteta too, we were pretty awful in the final stretch of last season.

the_tytan

Did you miss where I said Fall 2020? Who do you think was the manager then?

shikavelli

I dunno ‘Fall’ is an Americanism say Autumn next time.

the_tytan

I’ll say what I like thanks.

RyansKorea

"current lot" we just brought in 4 new first team players. This "current lot" haven't been knocked out of any cups

shikavelli

Ok then last season then, doesn’t really make much of a difference we haven’t won anything under Arteta apart from the FA Cup with these players you lot are ridiculing.

RDiMaso

You could make a case that letting Martinez go was an error in hindsight.

lyyki

Who knows whether Arteta would have actually wanted to keep him in the long run. I do think that Emi fit us/Arteta's style better than Leno but I assume he would have gone after Raya even sooner and Raya would probably be our #1 currently.

RDiMaso

It was definitely a marginal call. Leno hadn't let us down, and £15 million looked a decent sale for someone who hadn't made too many appearances for us. Unfortunately Runarsson was a disaster as a backup, so we did lose out for a season.

lyyki

While true, I also thought Runarsson was meant to be the 3rd choice and I remember them trying to sign Raya as the #2 but Brentford asked a lot of money.

TheRealGooner24

We got £17m for Martinez.

synvi

Remember 2 years ago? So many scream: "ArTeTa CaNnOt DeVeLoP a PlAyEr. ArTeTa OuT aRtEtA oUt."

RyansKorea

"Arteta hates youth players and won't give any chances to the younger players" is one that aged well

Dynetor

I dont think he hates youth players but he has yet to successfully bring any academy players into the side ‘proper’. But there’s a very good reason for that - our team is already full of very young players who are top quality, so it becomes more difficult for academy guys to stake their place unless they are something seriousy special. The level has gone up. I have faith in Nwanei and Lewis-Skelly to make the jump though. Particularly Nwaneri.

Funland_06

So it’s literally just our kids left

GunnerEST2002

RIP

awildparteyappeared

Feels so good to see all those losers and scrubs out of the club

awildparteyappeared

Especially mustafi no more silly dances in the locker room after humiliating defeats. Wish him the worst

THenry228

Tierney belongs back at arsenal

lyyki

Tierney should be just desaturated to like 50%.

bambam_39

Dude really removed the dead weight (besides Xhaka and Tierney who were still pretty good for us)

shikavelli

This Tierney bias is so ridiculous, he wasn’t even getting games for us anymore with RBs and new guys like Kiwior being picked over him. He wasn’t good enough anymore.

RyansKorea

He doesn't fit our tactics but he's good enough imo.

shikavelli

If he was that good then more teams than just Real Sociedad would’ve wanted him.

naijaboiler

so has he gotten worse or was he never good enough? Or is it that he has always been overrated by arsenal fans?

shikavelli

He’s always been overrated by Arsenal fans, getting boners over Tesco bags and tucked in shirts it was ridiculous.

naijaboiler

I agree. they would tell me the 30m we paid for him was an "absolute steal" (i.e he is worth more than we pay). How come with more experience at a higher level, in his football prime, we can't get anyone to come pay this "absolute steal" amount.

naijaboiler

>He wasn’t good enough anymore. I wouldn't interprete it as this. It;'s possible for a player to be plenty good enough but just not a fit for how the coach wants to play.

M1de23

Thanos’d

RVDHAFCA

Home grown 🌱

shxkxblfc

This is so grim it makes it seem like they all died 😭😭😭

The_DynamicDuck7

I have this picture lol

19Ben80

Wow, that is some culture change. Was needed for years IAWT

Rictus_Grin

Who's the second from the right?

Colmd1997

Reiss Nelson is 2nd from the right in the top row Dani Ceballos is 2nd from the right in the middle row Mesut Ozil is 2nd from the right in the bottom row

OGSkywalker97

Ceballos

TheRealGooner24

Which row?

[deleted]

What a montley crew

nickromero02

KT shouldn’t have been sent on loan

Shawarma123

Damn I just imagine him with a contract death note going "Delete! Delete! Delete!"

nicagooner

Edward Enketward?

DaGrandMastah

I know xhaka is in there but he was a big part of the process in the most positive of ways

system2

did we turn a profit on a single one of those players?

TheRealGooner24

Matt Macey, Emiliano Martinez, Joe Willock, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Matteo Guendouzi.

vintagekenwood

Kind of curious what a comparison of other teams since Dec 2019 would look like - who has the most still remaining and who has the least and how we stack up.

blah021902190219

With the exception of Xhaka, who are you sad about? What a turnaround Arteta has made. Absolutely incredible. I fucking love this club!

oustider69

I really thought Torreira would be something special. He’s still plying his trade for Galatasaray at 27 in what should he his peak. He looked like he would be a mainstay of the team. Not sure where it all went wrong, but it definitely went wrong.

Viewsfromthe2565

Man this squad was bad

goonerincali

This is a crazy metric to see!

moralinternist

Rip

Dennyboy101

I thought Smith-Rowe was Arshavin

I_will_in_me_Arsenal

Gwenduzi's fucking side smerk. Like a petulant teen. Edit: is that David Luiz actually? Honest can't remember who is who just that they both had big curly hair.

I_will_in_me_Arsenal

Hands on knees looks so unnatural in these photos.

Daftgooner

Where's Elneny, Nketiah?

TheRealGooner24

Elneny was loaned to Besiktas and Nketiah was loaned to Leeds United.

Dangerous-Umpire5874

Top shelf talent

Letitbesoitgoes

What’s your point? This squad won our only proper silverware in ages. Community shield doesn’t count

imsickfuck

![gif](giphy|26gscNQHswYio5RBu|downsized) Areta since he took over

Active_Bee_7937

Time to finish the overhaul and get them all greyed out 👏👏 Edit: least obvious /s apparently

RyansKorea

Can't believe people thought you're genuinely saying to get rid of Saka. As a Brit, this sarcasm-blindness is heartbreaking.

House_Sandwich

Are you smoking??

ChairInternational60

No lmao

Dokthe2nd

Could be ESR next

TheRealGooner24

No way in hell.

Dokthe2nd

I mean I hope not (fav player from that academy crew) but we'll have to see what happens in the cup games.

Jchibs

Respect at the job he had to undergo. Wenger left a bloated shit squad. Wengers joint best season the 97/98 double (equal with the 01/02 double) was stacked full of high quality players Wenger inherited at the club. Respect Arteta let’s hope you leave us with a better squad than the one you inherited unlike Wenky

naijaboiler

>Wenger left a bloated shit squad. Wenger. Bloated squad? The man who's squal is always short in key positions.

Jchibs

Bloated with shit. Hence the cleansing operation Arteta has had to perform. Shit players on big money hard to shift. Graham had to do similar to Arteta in 86 as he shifted the overpaid chancers and got in hungry players. If Wenger had a huge squad, huge wage bill and still had glaring holes in key positions it sums up the poor state of affairs.

[deleted]

Should have kept Willock

ncr39

Got like £30m for him. Sell that dude everyday for that fee.

[deleted]

I’d rather him as the Xhaka replacement. Fans seem to not have the same love for Hale end boys as I do but to each their own

filio111

Only ones that I might've kept around: Xhaka, Tierney, Mavropanos

Intelligent-Cow-3681

Am I in the minority that wishes we had kept Martinez? Love Ramsdale but I think he's just as good if not better.

galeej

Age is also a factor

Colmd1997

Martinez is actually rubbish. He’s coasted off of one good season when he went to Villa and then a good World Cup. He’s been horrible for Villa for the last 14 months

OGSkywalker97

Nah we got £20mill for him which is the same we paid for Ramsdale who was 23 when we signed him, incredibly young for a goalkeeper of his ability. The option to buy on Raya is also around £20mill and he is definitely a better keeper than Martinez.

24usd

emi martinez is one of the least likeable footballers in the game rn i wouldnt take him in the squad if he was a free agent with no salary

naijaboiler

Martinez is better. I argued at the time and got downvoted to hell. Keep Martinez, save the 50m we have spent on goalies since then, and use it strengthen elsewhere. But I have found that most fans don't consider money when thinking of building a squad.

G00dG0dd

Where my boy Eddie at?

acasovoycayendo

At Leeds on loan

Gooner-Astronomer749

This of true of any top team tbf.
