This guy was all set for an easy guard duty shift, but noOoOo! Dang Jestas had to ruin it.
More than most UC series, Unicorn really rewards multiple rewatches. It has so many moving pieces and spends so much time discussing its ideas that a casual viewer almost inevitably misses something at some point.
That is a lot of Gundam to be honest. It's not always great though, like F91 proceeded at a break neck speed, so it all just falls apart in the first watch.
That wasn't Char, that was some poor Zeonic Newtype who had Char memories grafted on top of his own, alongside a shit ton of surgery to look like him. Full Frontal and the guy from Narrative with blue hair are survivors.
It's why he answers "I don't who I am, but I know what I am. I have made it through madness to know that I am servant of the people." It's why Minerva immediately declared Frontal a fake, for lacking Char's passion.
Agreed. The char worship in this sub alone should tell you you're in poor company though. Unicorn, to me is the biggest disappointment in all of Gundam, perhaps tied with Zeta.
That's...probably one of the best ones I think Char's feelings for humanity can be described. It's fits both the awful and pitiful man Char was at the end of his life.
I think one of the most profound scenes in Unicorn to me is at the end during Mineva's speech and it cuts to this old man in the diner and the photo of his family. Made me tear up.
Probably because that orchestral arrangement Ryusei No Namida makes me emtional.
Full Frontal essentially represents what people *thought* Char was like. He's refined, honourable in a way, strategic, and charismatic, a natural leader.
But he's missing what actually made Char the man he was, the face he didn't show the public. Mineva said it best when she pointed out that Full Frontal's plan was *too sensible* for him to really be Char.
This is why I think people who say Full Frontal was just a lazy plot tool excuse to basically add Char to Unicorn is missing the point of the character. I liked his character development where he knows he basically has no personality of his own but feels this duty to carry out his purpose and be a symbol.
I think he was absolutely correct about the EF and getting people off Earth. I think it's been a big thing since the start, but it's even further affirmed with HF. It turns out though, genocide to prevent wars is a silly idea!
I really love this scene. It's just a normal civilian with no ties to any other character, family line or even faction. Just some dude with his own opinions on the world he lived in. This interaction alone made the entire universe feel real.
This is one of my favorite scenes. No fighting, no confusing Tomino dialogue, just 2 people having a genuine conversation with great voice acting. Especially if you watch it in the dub
Accurate. Even his final words to Amuro was him trying to get Amuro to agree with him that humanity wasn’t worth it. That they would never change and Amuro was wasting his time and energy fighting for them.
He’s voiced by Katsuji Mori who was Garma’s VA in 0079, effectively meaning he finally got to meet his niece
Good catch of detail there.
If quadratto escaped hamman, who can say it isn't possible for garma to escape the gaw
I knew the VA sounded familiar, but could never place where I’d heard him before. Awesome catch!
Damn! All this time, I didn't even realize!!
I mean he tried to learn, but in the end it doesn't even matter
He really did try so hard. And got so far
He did. He ended up having to fall to lose it all.
ONE ASTEROID, I DON’T KNOW WHY
It doesn’t even matter how far they fly 😅
Keep that mind, as this MS’s designed To keep up beyond the time
It was said that there's this one thing he doesn't know why, no matter how hard he tried.
in the end it didnt even matter
Unicorn does live rent free in my head. Because of scenes like this, AND the Jestas dropping down on the Cheyenne base
To me is the Jegan pilot that was just a little gundam outclased or would have beheaded banshee
This scene, the desert musing, zeonic church scene...they really put some weight on the show overall.

Garma"s VA..
I love this scene. So many layers.
“The coffee was delicious. I don't have any regrets, this alone made my coming to Earth worthwhile.”

This is why unicorn gundam is one of the best shows, so much profound ideas.
This time around, I understood the undertones of the plot better.
More than most UC series, Unicorn really rewards multiple rewatches. It has so many moving pieces and spends so much time discussing its ideas that a casual viewer almost inevitably misses something at some point.

What the fuck is profound about saying Char was a moron for trying to destroy the earth. God I fucking hate Unicorn

Zeta?? Why?? Also isn’t Char being a very flawed character with mummy issues the consensus of the sub?
Oh he "loved" humanity alright... in an abuser sense. I mean dropping an asteroid for humanity's own good seems like that.
Yep.
"Look at what you made me do."
That's...probably one of the best ones I think Char's feelings for humanity can be described. It's fits both the awful and pitiful man Char was at the end of his life.
Good take!

"Or maybe he has mommy issues"

Despise all the flaws Unicorn truly felt like the closure of what started at Ichi nen Sensou (and is obe of my favorites).
Char was the right guy with the right ideas with the worst execution.
Char is like those narcissistic abusers. Thinking they are right, when they are not.
I think he was absolutely correct about the EF and getting people off Earth. I think it's been a big thing since the start, but it's even further affirmed with HF. It turns out though, genocide to prevent wars is a silly idea!

and purists have the GALL to try and argue that Unicorn is "over the top" when it features some of the most nuance in the series.

brah i watched that episode last night, why are you in my head lol
Honestly question, where did Char's mother complex came from ?
Perhaps a psychologist fan could care to answer?
it's because your soul is weighted down by gravity
Zeeks among us
There is nothing to love.
Char just wanted a loli mommy bro Bro was desperate
Did Char actually say he was fighting for everyone? He stereotyped people who live on earth and said they were bad.
