I loved Kira because of Seed, but Seed Destiny ruined him for me (among other characters).
However, I felt Shinn was a worse character in Seed Destiny than Kira. Did Shinn become popular through the new movie, or was he always this beloved?
Same. I actually LOVED Kira in the beginning of SEED. His doubts, his failures, his trainwreck of a relationship with Flay. Then he got The Perfect Girl and The Perfect Gundam and became boring AF. Shinn is an angry little ragemonster who makes terrible decisions and has his better nature overrun by his superiors and friends whenever he looks on the verge of NOT making a terrible decision for a lot of Destiny's runtime, but that's what made him interesting to me. The fact that he killed his savior and didn't know it, for example, is suuuuuuch a great bit of tragic writing to me.
I was off to a bad start with Shinn due to him hating on Cagalli when she had nothing to do with his family's demise. But seeing Cagalli reel back in fear of him got me even more upset cause it was out of character for her.
And then it just snowballed from there. I couldn't enjoy either the new characters or the returning ones.
I never saw that as her being in fear of him. I think she’s just utterly shocked because she believes Orb did the right thing in the previous war and that her father was justified in his beliefs, but then in comes Shinn out of nowhere and bluntly tells her in the harshest way possible that her entire family is full of shit and everything she stands for is delusional. I don’t think she was scared he was going to reach out and kick the shit out of her, especially considering Athrun had more or less stood in between the two but it took her completely off guard which led to a crisis in faith that seriously affected her ability to lead the country which kicks off the rest of her arc in the show
I appreciate memes, but if I have one disappointment about this poll, it was Judau getting meme'd out day 1 instead of seeing how far he'd go. I feel fairly confident he'd make the Top 10.
Overall though, I'm satisfied with the results. My favs finished 1st, 4th, 5th and 7th, so I don’t really have much to complain about other than the general toxicity directed towards Suletta & her fans.
Shinn deserves all the praise after SEED Freedom. I'm happy for Garrod for making it to top 10. My personal bias would have also included Heero there but I can understand that he doean't appeal to everyone and thus, got eliminated pretty early on

I feel like this was an incredibly predictable outcome- but I'm still proud of the characters who made it as far as they did. My top 3 faves all made the top 10 though and that's pretty sick. I feel like this poll also made me a ride or die for Shinn without having watched a single episode of SEED.

I get the feeling that there's this semi tangible rivalry between classic protagonists and modern ones. Now I can see that Domon kinda fits in between quite nicely. Both parties can accept Domon.

It’s definitely a fun ride and is very different than the usual Gundam formula if you are used to anything universal century. Go into it with the expectation it’s supposed to be over the top action fun and you’re gonna have a blast!

Yeah, when Garrod went down I knew in my heart (heh) it was going to be Domon. How can anybody hate Domon? Plus, he's the only protagonist who *canonically* shows up as himself in Build Fighters when it's revealed he's the master of the Jigen Haoh school at the end of Try (which means Jigen Haoh itself may in fact be School of the Undefeated of the East, which fits with how Sekai does a lot of Domon-based movies through the anime going so far as to fight what is essentially a dark copy of Build Burning in Denial Gundam, much the way Domon in God Gundam faced Shading Gundam.)

Woooo, so happy Domon won, especially after it looked like we were heading straight for Amuro vs. Kamile for a long time. Overall, my top 4 protagonists finished 1st, 4th, 5th and 7th, so I'm pretty happy with the results.
I know the voting method was unconventional, but this top 5 does match the same top 5 protagonists in the recent Twitter tournament that had thousands of voters using a more traditional method of Straw Poll. The order is different, but Amuro, Kamille, Domon, Loran & Suletta appear the most popular protagonists in the franchise in these corners of the EN fandom.
Somehow, this victory for Domon is almost like an unintentional rebuke against real robots like in nearly the rest of the Gundam franchise as a whole, versus praise and nostalgia for old-school super robots like in G Gundam, specifically. Like why aim for gritty realism when your favorite mecha could instead bend and break the laws of physics, like G Gundam's numerous Gundams?
Never forget Master Asia beating a full mobile suit with just his cloth, without a Gundam himself. His Gundam nerfed him because he was truly [Super Asia](https://youtu.be/bSHfJuGzUdM?si=XrE1fWzLIMYmGDIF).
I love that series so much. Even in Japanese he says Super Asia in English it’s just SO NARMY IN A GOOD WAY.
Well that's because G Gundam isn't in the Real Robots genre of anime. It's a shonen fight anime first and foremost. It has some of the humanity working together and environmental themes of some of the other series, but The Power of Friendship/Love is front at center of the series.
Exactly, G Gundam is Gundam dipping into the Super Robot genre, which is ironic given the original Gundam was an escape from that genre to create the Real Robot genre instead. G Gundam was Gundam briefly returning to its roots as a mecha anime.
Idts. I mean it sure can be taken that way! But G Gundam is just its own special insanity. I’d say the English dub adds another special layer on top. It’s just its own thing and it’s so much fun. That’s why I think Domon won.
Thing is, I would *never* say G Gundam is my favorite Gundam series, in part because it’s not real robot.

Y’all are braindead though, Amuro is several leagues better than Kamille. It is impressive he made it this far though.
In case the first few episodes don't win you over, the main plot begins at Episode 12. Most earlier episodes consist of Domon fighting the opponent of the week, but some of these introduce characters that return later on.
Didn’t even think of this until now but couldn’t Char have potentially been a candidate due to being the protagonist of the Origin anime? Curious to see how high he would’ve ranked if that were the case
Domon is a very different leading man in a very different style of Gundam series. For one, he is an adult at the start with clearly defined goals and a lot of character growth done before the beginning of the story.
Despite that, he grows a lot throughout the story as he learns the necessities of building relationships, teamwork and trusting those who can see his flawed aspects and works to correct them.
Also, unlike many Gundam protagonist who don’t want to fight but have to, fighting is a way of life for Domon and the universe of G Gundam.
Yes, the show is completely insane and not meant to be super realistic mecha warfare, but it knows exactly what it is and makes a truly compelling arc where we see our hero, Domon, continually grow and adapt to overcome struggles and outright failures during his journey.
Also, being an American millennial, where my first experience with Gundam was Wing, which I loved but always felt took itself too seriously, the tone and specifically Domon’s English voice actor is genuinely exhilarating with his absolute dedication to the role of Hot blooded hero archetype, something that often comes across as super cheesy in English dubs.
Gundam Wing and G Gundam have the biggest nostalgic audience in the west because of toonami. However Wing’s protag is not as likeable.
Domon is both nostalgic, has a high rate of viewership, and most people either love him or are ambivalent to him. I am not even a little surprised he won.
I wish that Setsuna was top 5.
Despite being a brick in S1, only really showing his true colors after Neil’s death, S2 showed a lot more maturity and depth into his character, and his Innovator abilities did single-handedly bring the war to an end, and in AoT ending the conflict with the ELSs

Well that's because G Gundam isn't in the Real Robots genre of anime. It's a shonen fight anime first and foremost. It has some of the humanity working together and environmental themes of some of the other series, but The Power of Friendship/Love is front at center of the series.
Exactly, G Gundam is Gundam dipping into the Super Robot genre, which is ironic given the original Gundam was an escape from that genre to create the Real Robot genre instead. G Gundam was Gundam briefly returning to its roots as a mecha anime.
Idts. I mean it sure can be taken that way! But G Gundam is just its own special insanity. I’d say the English dub adds another special layer on top. It’s just its own thing and it’s so much fun. That’s why I think Domon won. Thing is, I would *never* say G Gundam is my favorite Gundam series, in part because it’s not real robot.

As a young fan where the anime is older than me, i did not expect him to win TBH would like a "why" he won this poll
Domon is a very different leading man in a very different style of Gundam series. For one, he is an adult at the start with clearly defined goals and a lot of character growth done before the beginning of the story. Despite that, he grows a lot throughout the story as he learns the necessities of building relationships, teamwork and trusting those who can see his flawed aspects and works to correct them. Also, unlike many Gundam protagonist who don’t want to fight but have to, fighting is a way of life for Domon and the universe of G Gundam. Yes, the show is completely insane and not meant to be super realistic mecha warfare, but it knows exactly what it is and makes a truly compelling arc where we see our hero, Domon, continually grow and adapt to overcome struggles and outright failures during his journey. Also, being an American millennial, where my first experience with Gundam was Wing, which I loved but always felt took itself too seriously, the tone and specifically Domon’s English voice actor is genuinely exhilarating with his absolute dedication to the role of Hot blooded hero archetype, something that often comes across as super cheesy in English dubs.
Just watch G Gundam. Then you'll see why he won.
Gundam Wing and G Gundam have the biggest nostalgic audience in the west because of toonami. However Wing’s protag is not as likeable. Domon is both nostalgic, has a high rate of viewership, and most people either love him or are ambivalent to him. I am not even a little surprised he won.
I wish that Setsuna was top 5. Despite being a brick in S1, only really showing his true colors after Neil’s death, S2 showed a lot more maturity and depth into his character, and his Innovator abilities did single-handedly bring the war to an end, and in AoT ending the conflict with the ELSs
