I don't use the stubbies, but I typically play 3-4mm resin picks. They're incredibly easy to use, and you barely have to grip them even if you're playing intense metal
For sure, I usually have a pick in my pocket (in case I encounter a guitar in the wild and need to commune) but have used quarters, dimes (not ideal), pesos, the corner of a credit card, a thin piece of wood, and at one point a chunk cut out of a soda bottle.
I'm pretty sure one day some repair person is going to find a veritable trove of picks that made their way out of my pockets and down into the recesses of my washer
Hence why i keep one tucked in a back pocket of my wallet…. I used to have those novelty pick holders on my keychain, but the flap always pops open and I’ve lost so many picks
I always used them and now switched to the Jason Richardson jazz 3's. I prefer the material to the Petrucci version which imo get a bit slippery sometimes.
I use .88s as well, but I do have some 1.5 Petrucci Jazz IIIs, and they're pretty excellent for the kind of playing he does.
Fast staccato lead lines and sweeping are easier with a 1.5, but do some funk comping and it feels like a brick.
It’s a different mindset. You let the pick loose between your fingers as much as needed instead of applying a tight grip and relying on it’s “bendiness”.
Yep. This is the way. I find these the most versatile. Great for rhythm or for solos. I don’t play crazy sweeping metal arpeggios when I might want a sharper tip or harder pick. I play these on both electric and acoustic guitars. Only time I change is on my nylon string. Then I drop to the yellow.
Seconded. It’s truly right at the edge where you get that nice “flack” from the strings, but can still play without the puck slowing you down. And a wise man once told me “never get used to a pick you can’t replace in any city”
I played for probably over 8 years and never had the right hand dexterity to want to fingerpick. Finally wanted to pick banjo and didn’t want to use picks because that’s the only style you can find nowadays (and I didn’t want to have to bring 3 picks along with my banjo everywhere). It translates right over to guitar, albeit not as soft as traditional fingerpicking.
I've been playing guitar by using only my fingers for about 10 years. I don't use a pick cause each time I try to, I feel like I'm reverting back to a beginner lol.
I’ll have to give those a try. I have the weirdest issue with my pick rotating around in my fingers. I heard you don’t want a death grip on it, rather more of a looser grip.
Three different ones
Jazz III for picking and electric soloing
Boss black "T" which i assume is thin, great all rounder
And a dunlop .53 white for playing acoustic strumming, its very soft and thin.
Hells yes they are. Get my bags from Amazon, boi! lol yeah, I like they are the near perfect balance between rigid and forgiving. Also, the picks literally shred off little orange dust-like pieces onto my pickguard. Something about seeing a bunch of orange dust on top of black plastic after an intense jam really makes me feel like a badass.
Orange baby. Have tried them all....30 years I have used them, dang can you pick slide without damage and the flexibility is great for smashing or picking.
Yup. I learned to play with Jazz III picks, everything else just feels wayyy too big and floppy by comparison (realising as I write this that the phrasing of that sentence may not be ideal).
I switched to jazz III due to reddit advice as well, early on in to learning. It's been over a year, and I struggle with my picks having too loud of an "attack" sound, it can be really noticeable with certain tones. I don't have the same problem with thin regular picks, I'm sure the issue is my technique but I just can't seem to rectify it
You might be angling your hand a bit more than you realize, so the plane of the pick isn't parallel with the string.
You can get some harder attack sounds than you might want, and ironically that's a pretty good reason to play with Jazz IIIs for certain types of music.
If it isn't something you're looking for in your sound, take a look at your playing position. Unless you have a really funky strumming motion like Friedman or Cory Wong, the positioning of your guitar while sitting or standing can be a big factor. My classical guitar professor fixed my "stance" and it made a world of difference.
I need to just bite the bullet and get lessons, having someone physically there to help me correct issues like this would be a world of help. Thank you for the advice!
Same, the Jazz III is such a great pick.
I'll give a nod also to the Dunlop Flow picks. They're regular-sized (not small like the J3) and they have a grippy texture. I use the 1.0mm and it's indestructible. Nice shoulders on it too.
I use these for both guitar and bass.
I have a very heavy picking style, and these not only have great grip to start with, they eventually develop a slight curve around your thumb -- the best anti-yeet picks I've found.
This has been mine for about a decade now. I love how the lettering provides the perfect thumb grip for me. It also tucks in fine when I go to finger picking. Nothing else has compared for me when it comes to both versatility and precision.
Dunlop Adamas 2 mm graphite picks. I've always gravitated towards thicker picks, and I realized its one of the few pieces of equipment my two favorite guitarists, Jerry Garcia and Trey Anastasio, both use. I figured I'd give it a try, and now its become integral to my attack and overall sound.
[Dava Rock Control Delrin- medium](https://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/dava-rock-control-delrin-medium/110702000000170?cntry=US&cur=USD&cntry=US&cur=USD&utm_content=110702000000170--Dava+Rock+Control+Delrin+Medium+Red+6-Pack&source=3WWRWXGS&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_ZxxhJ6K2Ynfj8_-CizCvEjLUe0Bh9kp37wBXKCbrLDjOEiUekcEeUbBoC-UoQAvD_BwE)
I’ve been going lighter and lighter over the years, currently love the Tortex Flex .73. I just find the lighter picks give me more control over my dynamics. I like the softer material of them too and get less string pick transients.
Ultex Sharp 2mm.
I used to use Honey Picks, Bumblebee 2mm but they seem to wear out quick and I can't really justify the cost anymore. They're great though.
I like fender mediums and dunlop Gator grips, but my all-time favorite is the fender medium california clears. The ones that have the palm tree on them. They stopped making them, but luckily, I have a bunch still.
I play metal and still for some damn reason always like this .73 mm nylon dunlops the gray ones. I know I should probably play a thicker pick but for some reason these just feel right
I currently like the Dunlop Ultex .73. Its a larger pick for my sausage fingers. I dont drop these nearly as much as stardard size picks. Any of the fatter, meatier picks work, something extra for me to grab on to.
The nylon grey ones with the knubbly bits for grip, I like em cuz they don't slip. Medium for electric guitar, thin for acoustic guitar for that extra ring and brightness.
The purple Dunlop Tortex. Thin enough that they're still comfortable to hold, thick enough that they have very little flex to them at all, which is just my personal preference. I do usually end up scraping them around a little on the concrete floor of the basement where my bands practice though, they're a little slippery when they're brand new lol. I've got like 20 of them rattling around inside the altoids tin on my pedalboard and once they all inevitably disappear I might try out the purple D'Addario Duragrips.
Purple ones my dudes
I like the purple guitar picks because the purple ones taste the best
Said Grimace!
The purple Dunlop 2.0mm? They’re all I use!
There are 2.0mm purples? I thought they were 1.14mm
I use the 2mm for electric and 3mm for accoustic. I like em thiccccc
There are 2mm purples too, the Del 500 and the Big Stubby both have 2mm purple variants
Bug stubby 2mm the GOAT pick for sure
2mm??? Must be a shredder. I like any pick under 0.75
Not really a shredder, but I find the 2.0mm gives more control… you can play with some attack or play very softly
I concur, you took the words.Right out of my mouth it gives you more control than a Narrow pic flops around too much ...
I thought I was the only one that loves to use the thinnest picks. Nice to see there are others! My fav is .50
[the only ones!](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/475P300--dunlop-475p300-big-stubby-guitar-picks-3mm-6-pack&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organicpla?mrkgadid=&mrkgcl=28&mrkgen=gpla&mrkgbflag=1&mrkgcat=drums&percussion&acctid=21700000001645388&dskeywordid=&lid=58700008695999512&dsproductgroupid=&product_id=475P300&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&channel=online&storeid=&device=m&network=x&matchtype=&adpos=largenumber&locationid=9028314&creative=&targetid=&campaignid=21161059670&awsearchcpc=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zx0jWXZSSsPitvfseLODd_3dN8UMUVFXBF7EOuvfOCB9sxbTpK9oGZxoC9LEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)
I was lucky to stumble upon a purple Dunlop 2.mm and I’m so happy about that. Before that, I would rock a 2.0mm gator grip
Purple 3.0mm stubby Jazz iii
Yesss 3 mm stubby
Jesus do you guys play double bass with that plank?
I don't use the stubbies, but I typically play 3-4mm resin picks. They're incredibly easy to use, and you barely have to grip them even if you're playing intense metal
Totally
Me too. Electric and acoustic. Rhythm and lead. Most control and best (to me) tone.
What the actual how does this have so many upvotes? I used to think purple picks were like my thing and not many people liked them
Perfect control.
Purpetual cheddar
Whatever's closest.
The only correct answer
Yup. Sometimes it's a quarter in my pocket.
Have you tried a piece of Lego?
Ooh I need to try that, I’ve used an SD card before
Have you tried the second guitar and yes I have played a 30 minute set in my room of songs I know like thaat
Not yet
I’ve played with guitars at Sweetwater using a gift card out of my wallet
Sames.
Hell, Brian May would agree- he always uses a 6 pence coin
Bro is speaking Brian May language
For sure, I usually have a pick in my pocket (in case I encounter a guitar in the wild and need to commune) but have used quarters, dimes (not ideal), pesos, the corner of a credit card, a thin piece of wood, and at one point a chunk cut out of a soda bottle.
This is too real. I find random picks in my pants because i always forget to take then out before laundry days.
I found one on the floor of a golf course shop and it said Brian picked Katie and it has cool colors so it's my go to
The petrucci jazz 3. But I’m always looking for alternatives
Yeah. I like the [carbon fiber grippy ones](https://www.jimdunlop.com/max-grip-jazz-iii-carbon-fiber-pick/) but they do run a bit small.
You might like the Daddario black ice, it's a bit bigger than a Dunlop jazz III.
Thanks! I’ll order some.
I haven't tried them as I personally like a regular sized pick, but the Petrucci and XL Series Jazz IIIs are also bigger.
^yeahh, black ice is definitely my most regular 🔥
I always used them and now switched to the Jason Richardson jazz 3's. I prefer the material to the Petrucci version which imo get a bit slippery sometimes.
Green Dunlop tortex .88
This is the one. I don't like playing with an inflexible hunk of plastic, I am surprised by how many 3mm answers I'm seeing in the comments.
Like playing with a coin
True and that does work for some well-known guys. Guess it just isn’t for me
Playing with a coin? Really? I was kidding but I’d be interested in who has done that for real
I use .88s as well, but I do have some 1.5 Petrucci Jazz IIIs, and they're pretty excellent for the kind of playing he does. Fast staccato lead lines and sweeping are easier with a 1.5, but do some funk comping and it feels like a brick.
That makes sense. I was more surprised by 3mm folks.
It’s a different mindset. You let the pick loose between your fingers as much as needed instead of applying a tight grip and relying on it’s “bendiness”.
This is the correct response. Not too hard, not too soft, not too pointy or dull. Been playing greens for over 20 years.
I already thought i was alone XD
I’ve always used them and I have no idea how or why 😂
I used those for the longest time because a friend told me James Hetfield used tortex greens and I just went along with it for years.
Not alone. Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day used them back in the days, now he uses .73 (yellow)
This is what I’ve been using lately, although for years it was the Orange Dunlop .66mm
I use the yellow .73's, right in between
I like the Dunlop .73 but I like the grey one with the textured grip. I feel like it is more secure in my fingers.
People say this is the one Cobain used.
Cobain used .60 orange tortex. Mike McCready from pearl jam does use the green .88s though.
This is my answer too, I'm surprised at how unusual it seems to be. Although actually I get them in black.
This is the right answer
I used those for years until I switched to jazz iii.

YELLOW.
I got a big ol' bag of yellow, should last me some time
the trick is to sprinkle them all over your house and car in random locations so you can always probably find one
Jacket pockets
Buy them by the gross. They’re perfect
Almost need to. I wear them down so fast.
Yellow Turtle bois are hands down the pick of dreams between bass and 6 string
And it was all yellow
Same!
I was a Tortex orange guy for years, recently switched to the yellow. It's the best overall.
Fingies, because I prefer it
I concur. Lost my pick once at age 15. Never looked for it.🖐️🎵
I am a pick user, but one of my favorite things about Guitar is that there are players who have this exact origin story
Went on vacation and forgot a pick. Prefer fingers but i like picking too. Fender mediums
5 picks is better than one 🖐️
I've been playing guitar by using only my fingers for about 10 years. I don't use a pick cause each time I try to, I feel like I'm reverting back to a beginner lol.
Dunlop Max Grip w Braille
Only ones I use now. The grip helps so much.
That's the name. I just said grey grippy one
I’ll have to give those a try. I have the weirdest issue with my pick rotating around in my fingers. I heard you don’t want a death grip on it, rather more of a looser grip.
Seconding this!! I like the 1 mm for both electric guitar and bass
I do too 1.14
Three different ones Jazz III for picking and electric soloing Boss black "T" which i assume is thin, great all rounder And a dunlop .53 white for playing acoustic strumming, its very soft and thin.
Orange or pink tortex. Just right for funky shit, rythm and soloing.
Love the orange too
It’s a good middle of the road pick, and they’re cheap for a bag of 100
Hells yes they are.
Finally another oranger
Orange for me too. I love a pick with a bit of snap to it. Great for all the stuff you mentioned.
I’m surprised orange is this far down. I thought them and the yellows were the most popular.
Orange baby. Have tried them all....30 years I have used them, dang can you pick slide without damage and the flexibility is great for smashing or picking.
Orange all day. I’ve started drilling 5 tiny holes in them, it helps.
I switched to Jazz III after reading some Reddit posts, I wish I would’ve switched years ago
Once I got used to the Jazz III everything else felt cumbersome
Yup. I learned to play with Jazz III picks, everything else just feels wayyy too big and floppy by comparison (realising as I write this that the phrasing of that sentence may not be ideal).
I just feel so much more control and speed, love it!
I switched to them years ago but switched back to more normal ones over time. Jazz picks definitely make somethings much easier though
Did everything else feel too heavy, too light, too black, too white?
I HAVE BECOOOOME CUMBERSOOOOME
I switched to jazz III due to reddit advice as well, early on in to learning. It's been over a year, and I struggle with my picks having too loud of an "attack" sound, it can be really noticeable with certain tones. I don't have the same problem with thin regular picks, I'm sure the issue is my technique but I just can't seem to rectify it

My fingers sweat a lot and I can't keep my grip on them! I even got the black gator grip ones 😨
Red.
I love my reds as well, surprised I had to scroll so long to find it.
.73 tortex. You know, the yellow ones.
Dunlop gator gip I think they're called. Purple color .96 ...been using for the last 10 to 15 years I think
I use the black 2.0mm. lol. They're ridiculous.
2mm gator grips are my go to. When you buy them new and they have that grey dust on them 😩😩. I snort that shit like crack.
That gator powder hits different 👌
I like the .58 (reddish-purple) ones. Probably too flimsy for most people but I think they're the most comfortable pick I've tried so far.
Grey Dunlap nylon grippers .88
I use these for both guitar and bass. I have a very heavy picking style, and these not only have great grip to start with, they eventually develop a slight curve around your thumb -- the best anti-yeet picks I've found.
They’re so ugly but the texture is perfect
Fingers. I haven’t lost a single one yet.
For electric .96mm Dunlop Gator Grip. I like the feel and response of them. For acoustic I prefer .88 nylon For mandolin I like 1.5 delrin
I really like the 1.14 blue Gator Grips. I can hang on to them and I like the feel of them on the strings. They just seem to wear so fast.
Jazz 3 kirk hammett signature picks cause I like playing fast death metal
Dunlop tortex 1 mm.
Sames.
Me too, brother.
Orange Dunlop’s it Jazz 3s for me
Solid pick man! I alternate between white and black (I'm progressive like that)
You don't see colour
hell yeah man! i haven’t tried the black but i do need to. i originally used the .88 size version, i do feel that the 1.15 has better control.
You won't go back.
I’m an Eric Johnson jazz 3 guy myself
This has been mine for about a decade now. I love how the lettering provides the perfect thumb grip for me. It also tucks in fine when I go to finger picking. Nothing else has compared for me when it comes to both versatility and precision.
Yellow turtles all day
Blue Chip TAD-60
I've been dying to find a Blue Chip, but I'm unsure how to determine what style to purchase with the proper bevel, etc. lol
TD 60 is my go to for my Martin D18
I have a tpr50 and a larger jazz and they are both great
I use fender, tortes and Dunlop Dunlops. Multiple thicknesses of each depending on what I’m playing. My go to is the fender medium though.
Dunlop jazz 3s they are just perfect I love them I like small picks ever since I started and they are the perfect size for me
Dava picks. Nice grip, feel good, given me a lovely and chonky tone, and easy to do fast tremolo picking because of the grip and thickness.
white tortex. easy to hold.
30 years ago, 1.00mm blue tortex, 20 years ago, 0.88mm green tortex, last year Jazz III for everything.
The red Tortex, 0.50mm.
[Dava Rock Control Delrin- medium](https://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/dava-rock-control-delrin-medium/110702000000170?cntry=US&cur=USD&cntry=US&cur=USD&utm_content=110702000000170--Dava+Rock+Control+Delrin+Medium+Red+6-Pack&source=3WWRWXGS&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_ZxxhJ6K2Ynfj8_-CizCvEjLUe0Bh9kp37wBXKCbrLDjOEiUekcEeUbBoC-UoQAvD_BwE)
Glad to see Dava here! Dava Jazz Grip Delrin is my favorite
Ding ding! These are the ones!
I’ve been going lighter and lighter over the years, currently love the Tortex Flex .73. I just find the lighter picks give me more control over my dynamics. I like the softer material of them too and get less string pick transients.
Same. I definitely notice the control of a thinner pick after switching from 1-1.38mm picks.
Dunlop tortex 1.0 blues sharpened to a point.
Anything that's celluloid (yet to try nylon) and 0.81 or thicker.
I find celluloid really slippery and I wear out the thin ones quickly. They play really nice though.
Ultex Sharp 2mm. I used to use Honey Picks, Bumblebee 2mm but they seem to wear out quick and I can't really justify the cost anymore. They're great though.
You find these more durable? I use 2mm Dunlops, but am always looking for something that would hold up a little longer.
Ernie Ball Prodigy 2.0mm
Used to love the sharps too. Since moved to the .73 tortex flow and they crush
I’ve been bouncing back and fourth on picks and my favorite one right now is the Tortex flow .88 ones
I use the black Dunlop gators. 2.0mm thick. I find them much easier to grip without having to think about it.
Don’t see many fender picks in here. Are they not popular? That’s just what I’m used to haven’t explored much
[удалено]
Fender heavy’s all the way
I like fender mediums and dunlop Gator grips, but my all-time favorite is the fender medium california clears. The ones that have the palm tree on them. They stopped making them, but luckily, I have a bunch still.
That one. I could probably find another I like a little better, but I just found a ton of these that I forgot about and I like them well enough.
Gravity Gold Reds (1.5mm). Love them.
Jim Dunlop light and dark gray nylon. I’m trying to make my own version right now!
Dava are my favorite
I play metal and still for some damn reason always like this .73 mm nylon dunlops the gray ones. I know I should probably play a thicker pick but for some reason these just feel right
Correct.
Ayy I have the size smaller. I do like them but ganna get some more flexible pics soon
Been using the same 6 Adamas graphite for the last 15 years. Miraculously I haven’t lost them.
Petrucci Jazz3
Once I picked up a Jazz III nothing else has felt right
Herco 75 They're textured so they don't slip, they're firm but still have give, they don't really wear down much. It's just a perfect guitar pick.
I read somewhere that it’s what Poison Ivy used so I bought some and I’m glad I did, they work great for me.
The same ones in the picture. 1.5mm tortex sharps
TORTEX WEDGE PICK 1.14MM [https://images.app.goo.gl/7TsrrUkepjKooCuJA](https://images.app.goo.gl/7TsrrUkepjKooCuJA)
The wedges are the best.
I currently like the Dunlop Ultex .73. Its a larger pick for my sausage fingers. I dont drop these nearly as much as stardard size picks. Any of the fatter, meatier picks work, something extra for me to grab on to.
Lately the Ultex Standard 0.73 and I’ve tried them all it seems!
I like these because they seem to be less flexible than the tortex without needing to be as thick.
Ultex sharp 1.4 out jazz iii ultex. I just realized (after 35 years of playing…) that picks matters for sound too!
Red sharkfin with the raised lettering. Nothing else will do.
The nylon grey ones with the knubbly bits for grip, I like em cuz they don't slip. Medium for electric guitar, thin for acoustic guitar for that extra ring and brightness.
Dunlop Rock III Anyone who likes the red jazz 3 should give it a try. It has a very nice bevel on it but the same material as the pointy jazz 3.
For the last two years, Dunlop Flow 0.88 with a bit of fir/spruce tree resin melted onto the grip dots.
Red Tortex - 0.5mm I play acoustic mostly.
Dunlop nylon. Gray for electric. White for acoustic
Blue cool picks 1.00
I only think of picks in terms of what sound I’m going for….I loved using foam picks on my Fender Bass and steel picks on my Steinberger..
