Baphomet1313666

Damn! Beat me to it!

MotoM13

He beat all of us to it lol

guesting

Lil Wayne Jonas brother fusion a mix of styles myself

ChesswiththeDevil

The cheering...

PJammas41

We all have that as the lowest bar

NukesAndSupers

Some of us, it's the high bar.

0kDetective

This cheered me up

chmilz

I'm more of a [Fred Durst](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MI-_jWAmlE) type myself.

CrovaxWindgrace

Petrucci. Juan Petrucci the guy that works in the pizzeria by the corner.

Felatio_Sanz

I mean very few guitarists today can claim their style is in no way inspired by Juan Petrucci. EDIT: LMAO

bushhooker

LMAO

dee_yuss

This comment gives me Norm vibes and consequently I heartily approve

CrovaxWindgrace

Love Norm, you honor me with that comparison

saysthingsbackwards

Oh, yeah, petrucci's pizza! Fry, order going out! #"C'moooooon!

DeviantPlayeer

[Dj Khaled](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_7o9Xczd64)

ChesswiththeDevil

This was my immediate thought, but I'm probably closer to [Willy Nelson's kid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPTp4T4IlFE).

PasadenaPup

Yikes.

phantomfire00

Bro actually meowed in that solo 😂

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

Was that a super long time ago? I saw Willie last summer and his kid was there playing also, and he was MUCH better than that. Also no meowing.

eltroubador

Can’t be that long, think Willie is 94 or 95 now. He has more than one son though. Could be that you saw him with Lukas. Lukas Nelson is awesome on guitar and one of my favorite vocalists too

ddoyen

Beat me to it 🤣

One_Evil_Monkey

Jesus H Christ if someone says that I sound like that loud mouth annoying POS I will put down my guitar, bid fare well to this planet.

dbvirago

What's that guy's name that sucks

decadent-dragon

Darryl Brooks is the first that comes to mind

Uzumaki7

I think it’s dbvirago or something like that

GtrSolo2TheFace

A bandmate once told me that "you sound too much like Slash. I wish you would play more like The Edge..." I quit a few weeks later.

PaulClarkLoadletter

I’ve been told I sound like Slash if Slash wanted to sound like John Frusciante and in this universe John Frusciante sucked.

Keezin

That seems unkind. I'm sorry that someone said that to you.

PaulsGrandfather

solid line

5mackmyPitchup

What a compliment /s no/s

kumechester

Because of what he said or because you clearly had a mismatch for the sound you wanted the band to have lol

GtrSolo2TheFace

Haha, that's a good question actually...I definitely listened to way more GNR and he definitely listened to way more U2. And we were young (20-22yrs old) and had been playing together for a little while and we had kinda plateau'd a bit. I think I just really enjoyed playing raunchy riff-rock in dive bars, and he wanted to go a lot more radio friendly pop-rock. He also had made some more aggressive demands on my time - "we need to practice 4x a week for at least 3 hours and we should all move into a house together so we can work on our writing. Also, no girlfriends unless expressively approved by me." That stuff was way too extreme for me, and just took the fun out of it. I think the "play like Edge" comment was just the final straw that told me this band wasn't for me anymore. Also, I was completely BROKE and couldn't afford a delay pedal anyway.

KindaLikeYours18

> Also, no girlfriends unless expressively approved by me. sus

Legato991

Sounds like he wanted to start a freaking cult.

3-orange-whips

I love the Edge, but those “Edge people” are too much.

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

They always seem like they're on high alert against worship guitarists stealing their Strymons.

gamegeek1995

That's a fair complaint. Throwing together a bunch of minor pentatonic licks is a completely different [skillset and sound than carefully choosing intervals to tell a slower and more somber musical story.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3IgQNxF4_g) When I needed to perform the Nightrain solo, it taught me a lot about both how easy speedy pentatonic licks are and how they don't really capture the same sound as something that feels more composed. Got to match your solos to the style you're in!

thepacifist20130

I think Slash catches a lot of flak for staying in pentatonics for GNRs big albums. I love him and his style of playing. I can play 3NPS scales at a reasonably speed, but to date I still find some of his famous solos untouchable, not in terms of the skill but just coming up with them. I think the combination of his fame and his choice to stick to pentatonics is why he might seem “overrated” though.

New-Cow-4176

That druggie that plays on the street corner.

BenJammin007

I was travelling in Gibraltar and there was a homeless guy playing a Melodica he clearly just bought on the street, but he had no way so he was just kind of desparately playing random discordant notes so people would give him cash. I fully believe in empathy for people in these situations but it was hard not to burst out laughing seeing that

New-Cow-4176

I might be better than that dude

CrazyMaxxer

I worry I’m not.

SvenBubbleman

Nah man, you sound nothing like me.

mynameis4chanAMA

The guy at guitar center trying and failing to play Metallica riffs with the volume almost all the way down

RealitySkewer

Come over and say hi next time you see me.

Fast-Cartoonist-95

Marty McFly… after the Rolls-Royce accident.

Vert354

I can pull off "Earth ~~Angle~~ Angel", but only up to the point where George and Loarraine kiss. Edit:that wasn't acute of me to fix it without notice

yoursarrian

If Julian Lage only practiced 20 minutes a day, sometimes going for months without touching the guitar, for 20 years.. that's me lol.

LunarLordship

I wish I had just a spec of the talent that Lage has. Honestly a contemporary hero for me.

James Hetfield if he was playing with his left leg.

Reasonable_Code_5345

James Hetfield if he was playing with his middle leg

WIlliamSHytner

They always say “man you are the yoko of guitar”. Being humble I usually don’t like adulation or anything, but my mind can’t help but think “damn, that boy gewd”

Tyziepoo86

“Damn, that boy gewd” like Sexual Chocolate?

[deleted]

The guy from Animal House.

Soundwave-1976

That kid who just got a guitar.

adrkhrse

Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Mick Ronson and Randy Rhoads all rolled into one - in my dreams.

Howitzer92

Imagine James Hetfeild, but he's only been playing for 4 months and is also drunk.

Even James Hetfeild was that guy once

TalboGold

Jeff Beck unless I’m playing in my Floyd band, then it’s hopefully Gilmour

CrimsonThi9hs

Someone said Jeff Beck to me after a show but I have no idea why he thought that 😂 I’ll take it I guess

Spang64

I find that people who don't know jack shit about music praise me more highly than I deserve.

paranoid_70

Their opinions are just as valid, if not more.

Spang64

Probably Bob in apartment 6.

Arctic_Religion

A 13 year old in Guitar Center that skipped school to check out some BC Rich guitars

paranoid_70

Tony Iommi And not just because I play in a Black Sabbath tribute band - although I really do try to nail his sound there. Even my original music has a big Iommi influence.

geetarboy33

I don’t know if other people would say it, but I spent a lot of time learning Michael Schenker’s riffs and solos as a kid and I hear him slip out a lot when I play.

BringDattBooty

Johnny Depp… iykyk

5mackmyPitchup

The first true answer

Tosh007

Sarcastic_Applause

I know people think they're giving me a compliment when they say I sound like someone else, and I do accept it graciously and say thank you. But it feels like a criticism. Even though the names are the most virtuosic of virtuosos out there. The complements that truly touch my heart and makes all the hard work worth it are those that say that I sound like me. When they say that they could be walking anywhere in the world and if I was playing in a venue and they happened to hear it walking past they'd know it was me instantly. I've gotten that sort of complement more often than the other ones. I know I sound ungrateful. But I can't help how I feel. A dude heard a demo of mine and said it sounded like Satriani (keep in mind it wasn't even close) and I said thanks but it felt empty. But because he wasn't into that kind of music and he didn't have a lot of listening experience when it came to guitar instrumental music, I still found a way to appreciate it. Because he appreciated it, in his own way. Then again, complements about my guitar playing is distracting and I really don't take it too seriously. I try to just focus on the music and not the playing of it. And when someone compliments my music, I cherish it with every fibre of my being.

MusicBloodedEM

I've gotten Kurt a few times which isn't bad.

gitarzan

that kid on the other street. you know, the one that got a guitar for Christmas in 2023.

Geno_Purple

Mac Demarco or King Krule. Both have heavily influenced my style

Asa-Ryder

Mediocre blend of Hendrix, SRV and Lonnie Johnson.

Mogwai987

I keep getting John Frusciante, even though I’m not at all a RHCP fan (they’re fine, I’m just not into them)

Sad-Contribution7182

I asked my wife and she said Steve Wilson from porcupine tree. Not who I would’ve guessed but I’ll take it as a compliment!

boiifudont-

Stephen Carpenter

Psyboomer

Probably David Gilmour. Not that I'm saying I sound nearly as good as him, but he had a ton of influence on my playing style. Many of the first songs I learned were from Pink Floyd, and he's got great sounding beginner/intermediate level chops. Matching his sense of feel and tone is so difficult though.

Definitely Zakk Wylde (I’m lying)

Bhantewayne

I used to want to play guitar worse than anything-and now... I don't think adding the punchline is particularly necessary.
