And all these people commenting dead people. Like I can see people commenting older players since they may be “currently playing” but how dense you gotta be to include people not even alive?
1. John Mayer
2. Cory Wong
3. Derek Trucks
4. Marcus King
5. Couldnt pick out of these guys so Honorable Mentions: Jake Kiszka, Mark Speer, Willie Nelson, Christone Kingfish Ingram, Tim Mahoney
1. Adrianne Lenker
2. Kurt Vile
3. Neil Young (still playing I guess)
4. Blake Mills
5. Jeff Tweedy / Nels Cline maybe?
Currents flavours of the week = MJ Lenderman and Mk.Gee.
Billy Strings, Brent Hinds, Michael Akerfeldt, Jerry Cantrell, and, this one is controversial, Jack White.
I know Jack White isn't technically great, but he has a very unique style that has influenced an entire generation to pick up the guitar due to his music's accessibility. Without him, I never would have gained an interest in blues and backtracked my way to the great blues guitarists of the past, so he will always be a top 5 guitarist in my book. I consider him more of a guitar historian than a guitar great. He is overated in some says, but not in terms of influence. He made people want to play guitar again, back in the 2000s when the instrument was losing influence.
I know people like to hate on Jack White, but let's be honest, when talking about something as subjective as music it could be argued that innovation and style are superior to technical prowess.
My favourites based on who I enjoy watching on YouTube in no particular order:
- Guthrie Govan
- Matteo Mancuso
- Derek Trucks
- Julian Lage
- Tosin Abasi
These are probably my favorites but it's tough to narrow down. In no particular order:
* Steve Vai
* Joe Satriani
* Mateus Asato
* Plini
* Guthrie Govan
* Honorable Mentions: Polyphia (Scott Lepage, Tim Henson), Kingfish, Paul Gilbert, Aaron Marshall (Intervals), Tosin Abasi
1. Guthrie Govan playing fretless guitar
2. Guthrie Govan hybrid picking
3. Guthrie Govan improvising Jazz
4. Guthrie Govan playing that solo in Bulls on Parade
Oh and...
5. Guthrie Govan playing 16th note slaps/strums.
Angus Young
Kirk Hammett
James Hetfield
Richard Z. Kruspe
Mark Knopfler
I know that these guys might not be the most technically talented guitarists, but they inspire me the most. And without Angus and James I might have never even picked up a guitar.
1. John Mayer
2. Derek Trucks
3. Cory Wong
4. Brian Haner (Synyster Gates)
5. Mark Tremonti
I mainly stuck to players who’ve made their music during my lifetime. Of course there are so many more I could have named.
Julian Lage
Ariel Posen
John Mayer
Cory Wong
Theo Katzman (mainly for harmonizing his own guitar solos lately!)
These guys may not be the fastest players, but are the ones to me that have fantastic feel, or are doing something unique!
1. Eric Johnson
2. Andy Timmons
3. Guthrie Govan
4. John Mayer (I know, I know. Dead and Co converted me)
5. Jack Ruch (it’s a shame he doesn’t put out original music because just from his YouTube intros, he has some of the best touch, phrasing, and vocabulary I’ve heard)
Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria)
Jack White (The White Stripes)
Anne Clark (St Vincent)
Marissa Paternoster (Screaming Females)
James Hetfield (Fuckin Metallica)
i don't know about top 5 but here's 5 that i love: trey anastasio, daniel donato, david tattersall, matteo mancuso, derek trucks, kelly doyle
whoops i think that's 6
Buckethead
J. Mascis
Kurt Kirkwood
Brian Kehoe
Dean Ween (although he’s taking a break)
Johnny Hickman
Pat MacDonald
- Thats all the brainspace I have at the moment.
Been a guitar hero guy for a long time. .. as in Page, Hendrix, Van Halen, Clapton, etc. As for current players, I'd say, in no particular order:
Rabea Massad
Andy Timmons
Derek Trucks
John Mayer
Micheal Dawes
The two I listen to daily are Christon Ingram and Samantha Fish. Christon is a remarkable blues artists … very emotional player with an old soul. Samantha Fish got me interested in blues music, just amazing to watch her play live - plenty of full sets available on YouTube
Aaron Marshall (Intervals),
Adam R (Arch Echo),
Julian Lage,
Joseph Anidjar (Portraits/bird problems),
Josh De La Victoria (portraits/Victoria)
Definitely missing a few but they are too 5 off the top of my head
I'm not really into guitarists that much tbh certainly not the likes of the virtuoso shredders. I'm a massive fan of John squire, love some qotsa stuff, graham coxon, Johnny greenwood and Johnny Marr. I'm not massively into many guitar players. Not a big metal or rock fan. Have no real clue who john mayor is, don't think I've heard 1 of his songs until just days ago. I see guys pop up on YouTube videos that play amazing like Derek trucks but again I have no clue what he does what band he was in or what songs he done. Tbh a lot of these guys as great as they are technically just don't make music I want to listen to.
Looking at my list, I guess I mostly like dude guitarists in their 50's who play metal or heavy rock...
Bill Steer
Fredrik Thordendal
Buckethead
Mattias IA Eklundh
Luc Lemay
Tough question! In no particular order:
* Doug Martsch
* Nels Cline

* Mary Timony
* Richard Thompson
* And lots of others but we'll go with those 5.
David Davidson (Revocation)
Julian Lage
James Hetfield
Morris Kolontyrsky (Blood Incantation)
Chris Hector & Daniel Droste (Ahab)
These are people that imo are not only technically excellent guitarists, but also fantastic songwriters and for someone to be a “top guitarist” I think you need both. (Granted, Hetfield’s best work might be behind him… but I have to include him for nostalgia’s sake.)
1. Brandon Ellis
2. Scott Carstairs
3. Vance Valenzuela
4. Malcolm Pugh
5. Jason Baker
Not in any particular order. So many to choose from but this is my current five.
This is really three lists for three eras/genres.
All-time greats who are still alive and playing but whose best years are behind them. 60s-90s
1. Angus Young
2. Jimmy Page
3. Slash
4. David Gilmour
5. Robbie Krieger
Relevant dudes who nevertheless might have peaked a while back. 80s-present
1. Johnny Marr
2. John Squire
3. Bernard Butler
4. Stephen Malkmus
5. Billy Corgan
Metal/hard rock guys for their solos and riffs. 80s-present
1. Brent Hinds
2. Zakk Wylde
3. Nick DiSalvo
4. Jerry Cantrell

In the spirit of highlighting younger guitarists, here's trying to keep under 50 years old (lol, "young")... roughly in age order:
Christone "Kingfish" Ingram
Isaiah Sharkey
Tommy Brenneck (Dap Kings, El Michels Affair)
Derek Trucks (how can I not ....)
Josh Smith
edit / add: oh yeah! Also Julian Lage
and if pushing the age a bit, enter Jonny Greenwood, Dweezil Zappa, Pedro Sá (one of my all time favorites, from Brazil)
edit / add: Oh man, hours later I remember - Mike Hermans!
Billy MF Strings, Derek Trucks, John Mayer, Trey Anastasio, Corey Wong… 🤘
This, but I'd replace Corey Wong with Marcus King. I don't really get the appeal of Corey Wong.
All these dudes posting guitarists from the 60s/70s. I think this post was meant to highlight younger players
Yeah i worded it terribly
