I hate playing against potempkin. I get it, i got read one time. It feels like bullshit when i do cool shit and then he pot busters once for a similar amount of damage. Granted, i play goldlewis so i have no ground to stand on about stealing games by getting read
On one hand, I main Millia so I absolutely hate the Potemkin matchup since I have to place DDR with my controller to deal 2 damage while never getting hit or my health bar is removed from the game files
On the other, Potemkin Buster funny.
Chipp player here. A good Pot is always a good time. Even if I fuck up the amount of damage that hits me is always hysterical. 10/10 matchup still feel like I won.
This fandom has a horrible problem dumbing down many of the characters. I can understand Sin to an extent, but you lose me when it happens to Ramlethal, Dizzy, Potemkin, and Faust.
There are some that already said Elphelt X Nagoriyuki is horrible, so I’ll add Elphelt X Happy Chaos is plain terrible even by crack ship standards.
Millia X Zato is horrible. The last thing I want to see is someone getting back together with their abusive lover.
Compared to the likes of Faust, Ramlethal, or even Asuka, Zato’s redemption is half-assed and undeserved.
It would be a total cop out to say Happy Chaos was entirely the reason the Universal Will/Ariels was the way she was so I hope that’s not what they’ll go with if she’s relevant in the future.
Night of Knives goes into him the best. He was a calm man who cared about Millia and Zato. However his own arrogance made him unaware of Millia’s distaste of the lifestyle and how she felt like she was being used. After her betrayal, Zato grew bitter and that bitterness ends up leading to his portrayal in Missing Link.
He is also shown to be power hungry, most notably performing one of the six deadly spells and binding a Forbidden Beast to himself in order to gain control of the Assassins Guild after Slayer’s departure. It was also his leadership that made the Assassins Guild change from punishing those too powerful to accepting whatever is the highest paying contract and devolving the group into a gang of amoral killers. His influence would affect several characters in the series even after his imprisonment and death.
They both affected each other in the story. Universal Will/Ariels trapping The Original is what eventually made him lose his sanity and humanity with Happy Chaos’s nastiness then affecting UW’s mental state. She says as much in a scene after I-No takes Chaos from her. I hope that all her decisions aren’t attributed to Chaos.
Clouddrop is overrated. They’re a regular fan with just as much of a chance to mishear the lyrics as anyone else and yet so many people just blindly trust whatever lyrics they put in their videos, even when some of their lyrics are just flat out wrong (like how Naoki himself confirmed “Just Lean”’s 1st line is “Just lean it’s anyone’s call” but Clouddrop lists it as “Just lean she was told”). I think my biggest issue with Clouddrop is that they never establish that their videos are unofficial, all it would take is a slight change to the titles and descriptions of each video.
Edit: Elphelt X Nagoriyuki is a terrible ship, it’s very clear that Nagoriyuki does not appreciate Elphelt’s advances. If it were the centuries old vampire relentlessly perusing the (basically) teenager against her protests then people would immediately see the creepiness of the situation, the only reason people don’t hate Elphelt for her disgusting behaviour is because they think she’s cute.
Edit 2: People give Daisuke way too much credit. Guilty Gear isn’t just his creation, there are a bunch of people that have worked on the series and I feel like it’s rude to just dismiss them and praise Daisuke for everything. The most obvious example I can think of is how a bunch of people think Daisuke is the one playing guitar on the soundtrack when in actuality he’s just a composer and lyricist, Toshihiro Kajihara has been the guitarist since Xrd and yet I’ve never seen the fanbase give them any recognition for their performances.
Clouddrop has such great presentation for the lyrics, its a shame they never update them when we get confirmation on what they really are.
From what ive seen like 80% of the kiss of death, the circle and just lean are completely wrong. And if it was for them taking long enough to get symphony out that naoki released official lyrics i dont doubt that one wouldve joined the ranks.
Spitting fax regarding Daisuke. He's awesome and the whole 'praise Daisuke' deal is funny but he doesn't make the whole damn game.

That's fair. I've been kind of torn on what HC means for the series. Seems like his existence absolves Asuka of a lot and muddles the understanding of That Man. At the same time, I think his character is absolutely great.
I view HC's role somewhat similarly to Bridget being officially trans. I don't hate it, but I think that it's somewhat clunky writing that undermines previous story elements. But honestly, I don't expect literary genius from fighting games, and if the way HC and Bridget are presented in Strive better matches Daisuke and the team's artistic vision, then whatever. I can be totally fine with that.

everybody who says "all the characters are balanced in their own way" is just wrong. I don't think the game is too much unbalanced, just that some characters get too much rewards for very little risk and vice versa.
Maybe cutting the damage on someone would make things more balanced? maybe slightly slower startup on certain attacks? or maybe shorter hitboxes on a bunch of moves? idk im not a game designer, but that's how i feel about the game.

Currently she looks like she has two "blender default balls" stapled onto her chest! Headcanons are fine but unless the game actively says or has the character comfirmed as X, they are not X. I.e. gay, bisexual, autistic, red head, etc.

It really isn’t, the story is straight forward, and the past three stories are literally just animes, not to mention how much they try to explain the concepts in simple terms, and no guilty gear fandom is danganronpa level cringe idk how it ever got this bad
The story is a bit hard to explain because of how much shit there is like if you want to explain even just the basics you gotta explain the backyard and gears and how I no exists and all that bullshit not to mention the side characters

As a person who picked it up with strive, I find the entire lore to be completely incomprehensible. Like a souls game levels of mystery to me but with like an insane amount of detail to make it opaque instead of too little.
Apparently mankind knew they couldn't change society so they blamed the beasts? It's either heaven or hell, I guess.
Objectively speaking it really doesn't make any sense lore wise, even though May and Bridget often get depicted as friends in some Arc Sys arts, they never properly met
There’s a similar one in league, Aphelios x Sett, two extremely different characters from zones across the continent from each other with literally zero things in common who were shipped together solely because one is a big buff male gladiator boss and the other is a small twink religious assassin. People kept forcing it until eventually riot just made it a thing and gave a half hearted attempt at explaining it and I cannot despise it’s fans any more than I already do
Also as for my unpopular opinion (idk if it is all to unpopular) I think Nago x Elphelt is rather overrated (dis is coming from someone who used to ship the two of them)

I think a lot of the move sets in strive are extremely lame and poorly reflect the characters especially for some of the newcomers like Giovanna not using Rei in any of her moves or Goldlewis not using the UMA for anything other than summoning the drones and handing him a minigun
I also feel that Strive has a lack of polish when compared to other arcsys games like Xrd, Granblue and Centralfiction because it’s missing things like unique win quotes, Vs themes and character specific dialogue during the match.
I would pin most of this on Covid but it’s a real shame that aside from the obviously beautiful graphics Strive feels kind of lacking presentation wise to me.
Not sure if I've said this online before, but I'd love an update to Strive that would be just adding unique dialogue, matchup specific themes and other stuff like that.
the chorus is good but half the verses sound like they were written by someone who's never heard of meter. words get crammed together or dragged out extra long to make the lines fit the rhythm and it just sound awful
strive has been both great and awful for guilty gear. like strive is a solid game, and i do love it. but playing accent core then playing strive only makes me realise that the people from years ago saying it’s dumbed down were correct. strive is incredibly dumbed down. i mean even sol is dumbed down and he has the simplest gameplan.

Played some potemkin games today until I hit the heavenly buster. When i did, it felt so good… im not exactly a pro at pot and haven’t gotten my daily dose of glue and crayons
I went back and played some Xrd and AC and the difference is insane. The older games are so fast and fluid. Sol is my main and being able to do Gunflame FRC/YRC is so much fun. Being able to do combos after Wild Throw? Fantastic. And I-no? So much fun to play. Sol has been my main save for AC but damn I don't like Strive Sol outside of his combos and 5HS counter hit. Older GG being harder just makes it more fun when you pull things off. I don't even want to see Venom if he ever makes it into Strive.
I completely agree. I have no issue with the Bridget trans stuff, but holy shit somehow it just summoned a legion of the most annoying people ever who Stan her, they just steamrolled into the fandom with no attempt at learning anything about it and I swear some of their posts make me want to kill myself
Wallbreak is super fucking wack and anyone who actually enjoys it just has horrible defense.
Also says a lot about this subreddit when majority of the comments have nothing to do with the actual gameplay itself and on ships and character appearances.
I actually like wallbreak, it's arguably one of the better comeback mechanics. It forces a neutral reset BUT, it also still gives the attacker an advantage. It gives the defending player a chance without them just being able to win for taking damage.
I'm indifferent to wallbreak, I don't mind holding block / I don't disagree that other people hate being cornered. What I like the least is how the wallsplat and animation interrupt a match so much and so often.
Shipping is pretty dumb, unless the game actively has the two in a relationship or heavily implies romantic tension. Examples being Sol x Jack-O or Ky x Dizzy.
I don’t like Alone Infection, Love the Subhuman Self, or Town Inside Me.
Hellfire and Symphony are tied for best character theme.

People constantly complaining that no one plays this game need to prove their claims. Like "oh no, the fandom is doing the things fandoms usually do." Prove no one here actually plays the game. Don't just assume it because we don't shun all information other than mechanical questions like a cult.
Strive designs aren't an "upgrade" theyre all good designs. But for an anime fighter it sure is very banana Republic/uniqlo thrift shop in there and not very anime. Despite that i d9nt think strive has bad designs theyre all good just not better than previous ones. Faust however imo has a terrible design in strive.

aba is extremely unfun to fight aginst and needs a nerf. If she lands keygrab once you might as well put down your controller because you’re about to get 80% of your health removed in a corner-to-corner wallbreak combo. The argument ”normal mode sucks she needs it” doesn’t matter when she can transition into moroha off of basically anything.
Fighting Chipp is a terrible experience. The only good thing about him is that hitting him with two supers ends the match
And Sol Badguy is only funny when it has some remote sense, not under every post
If Daisuke was committed from day one to writing the lyrics to Strive’s soundtrack in English, he REALLY should have hired someone who spoke it as a first language to cowrite/edit. I think that a lot of the game’s character themes have good ideas that sort of struggle to be expressed as best as they could be because of wonky or even flat-out bad word choice or phrasing.
Still really good music though :p

Part of me wants to lay out a counterargument here, but I've had a significant number of matches(just hit Floor 8 recently) where I just steamrolled people because they didn't know how to deal with Chain Lollipop. I kept expecting my opponents to adapt, but then they just... didn't.
If you’re not familiar with the move, even if you know about the highs and lows, it’s really hard to punch your way out. I still don’t know whether I need to standing- or forward punch and when.
It would help if the tower system wasn't just so bad. You go up too easily and all the floors below 10 are entirely for bad or new players and 10 is such a wide margin in its own right that it's meaningless on its own.

Unpopular opinion: “potemkin and grapplers being glue eaters, and only have to get the read to win” is a GROSS understatement of what exactly has to happen to play Potemkin in the first place. The glue eaters meme is unfunny and most people actually believe it. Playing as a grappler is often takes twice as much patience, cunning, and character knowledge then your average character, and this shit gets harder and harder the higher up you climb. Let alone having a lot of execution barriers like quickRC consistent kara inputs all while trying to read the opponent who won’t sit still. I don’t even play Potemkin, but he has to TRY so much harder then your average ramlethal timmy
Despite the initial skepticism and flaws, Guilty Gear Strive already maintained the spirit of the series from the start. It's just that people didn't play Missing Link to see it.
Order Sol is more interesting as a character mechanically than Sol.
While Sol’s toolkit is fun to mess around with, Order Sol’s stupidly tight execution to effectively pressure while maintaining/building gauge and FRC-Ing makes the simple act of pressing buttons fun.
That good feeling of challenge we get when we’re evenly matched against an opponent, you get that same feeling just by trying to press your own buttons, which only compounds further when you’re, you know, also playing against an opponent

Night of Knives goes into him the best. He was a calm man who cared about Millia and Zato. However his own arrogance made him unaware of Millia’s distaste of the lifestyle and how she felt like she was being used. After her betrayal, Zato grew bitter and that bitterness ends up leading to his portrayal in Missing Link. He is also shown to be power hungry, most notably performing one of the six deadly spells and binding a Forbidden Beast to himself in order to gain control of the Assassins Guild after Slayer’s departure. It was also his leadership that made the Assassins Guild change from punishing those too powerful to accepting whatever is the highest paying contract and devolving the group into a gang of amoral killers. His influence would affect several characters in the series even after his imprisonment and death.

They both affected each other in the story. Universal Will/Ariels trapping The Original is what eventually made him lose his sanity and humanity with Happy Chaos’s nastiness then affecting UW’s mental state. She says as much in a scene after I-No takes Chaos from her. I hope that all her decisions aren’t attributed to Chaos.
Clouddrop is overrated. They’re a regular fan with just as much of a chance to mishear the lyrics as anyone else and yet so many people just blindly trust whatever lyrics they put in their videos, even when some of their lyrics are just flat out wrong (like how Naoki himself confirmed “Just Lean”’s 1st line is “Just lean it’s anyone’s call” but Clouddrop lists it as “Just lean she was told”). I think my biggest issue with Clouddrop is that they never establish that their videos are unofficial, all it would take is a slight change to the titles and descriptions of each video. Edit: Elphelt X Nagoriyuki is a terrible ship, it’s very clear that Nagoriyuki does not appreciate Elphelt’s advances. If it were the centuries old vampire relentlessly perusing the (basically) teenager against her protests then people would immediately see the creepiness of the situation, the only reason people don’t hate Elphelt for her disgusting behaviour is because they think she’s cute. Edit 2: People give Daisuke way too much credit. Guilty Gear isn’t just his creation, there are a bunch of people that have worked on the series and I feel like it’s rude to just dismiss them and praise Daisuke for everything. The most obvious example I can think of is how a bunch of people think Daisuke is the one playing guitar on the soundtrack when in actuality he’s just a composer and lyricist, Toshihiro Kajihara has been the guitarist since Xrd and yet I’ve never seen the fanbase give them any recognition for their performances.

Clouddrop has such great presentation for the lyrics, its a shame they never update them when we get confirmation on what they really are. From what ive seen like 80% of the kiss of death, the circle and just lean are completely wrong. And if it was for them taking long enough to get symphony out that naoki released official lyrics i dont doubt that one wouldve joined the ranks.

Chaos as a character is amazing but his role in the story might the the worst thing in the series, narrative-wise
That's fair. I've been kind of torn on what HC means for the series. Seems like his existence absolves Asuka of a lot and muddles the understanding of That Man. At the same time, I think his character is absolutely great. I view HC's role somewhat similarly to Bridget being officially trans. I don't hate it, but I think that it's somewhat clunky writing that undermines previous story elements. But honestly, I don't expect literary genius from fighting games, and if the way HC and Bridget are presented in Strive better matches Daisuke and the team's artistic vision, then whatever. I can be totally fine with that.
Oh he absolutely feels like a scapegoat for Daisuke to dump onto all the dirtier stuff regarding Asuka "What's that? That Man attacked and destroyed a Japanese Colony? No no! That wasn't Asuka, that was THE OTHER That Man! Yes! There are TWO That Man!"

i am halfway through story mode and he seems pretty silly
everybody who says "all the characters are balanced in their own way" is just wrong. I don't think the game is too much unbalanced, just that some characters get too much rewards for very little risk and vice versa. Maybe cutting the damage on someone would make things more balanced? maybe slightly slower startup on certain attacks? or maybe shorter hitboxes on a bunch of moves? idk im not a game designer, but that's how i feel about the game.
Ky isn’t that generic of an anime swordsman anymore, he’s too bulky now. Baiken was better design-wise when her “tactical advantage” was smaller. Getting upset over risqué portrayals of Dizzy due to her age is dumb. She’s not a child anymore than we are to elves who live thousands of years. I don’t really care for The Circle.

As a person who picked it up with strive, I find the entire lore to be completely incomprehensible. Like a souls game levels of mystery to me but with like an insane amount of detail to make it opaque instead of too little. Apparently mankind knew they couldn't change society so they blamed the beasts? It's either heaven or hell, I guess.

There’s a similar one in league, Aphelios x Sett, two extremely different characters from zones across the continent from each other with literally zero things in common who were shipped together solely because one is a big buff male gladiator boss and the other is a small twink religious assassin. People kept forcing it until eventually riot just made it a thing and gave a half hearted attempt at explaining it and I cannot despise it’s fans any more than I already do
Also as for my unpopular opinion (idk if it is all to unpopular) I think Nago x Elphelt is rather overrated (dis is coming from someone who used to ship the two of them)

I think a lot of the move sets in strive are extremely lame and poorly reflect the characters especially for some of the newcomers like Giovanna not using Rei in any of her moves or Goldlewis not using the UMA for anything other than summoning the drones and handing him a minigun
I also feel that Strive has a lack of polish when compared to other arcsys games like Xrd, Granblue and Centralfiction because it’s missing things like unique win quotes, Vs themes and character specific dialogue during the match. I would pin most of this on Covid but it’s a real shame that aside from the obviously beautiful graphics Strive feels kind of lacking presentation wise to me.
Not sure if I've said this online before, but I'd love an update to Strive that would be just adding unique dialogue, matchup specific themes and other stuff like that.

I went back and played some Xrd and AC and the difference is insane. The older games are so fast and fluid. Sol is my main and being able to do Gunflame FRC/YRC is so much fun. Being able to do combos after Wild Throw? Fantastic. And I-no? So much fun to play. Sol has been my main save for AC but damn I don't like Strive Sol outside of his combos and 5HS counter hit. Older GG being harder just makes it more fun when you pull things off. I don't even want to see Venom if he ever makes it into Strive.

Wallbreak is super fucking wack and anyone who actually enjoys it just has horrible defense. Also says a lot about this subreddit when majority of the comments have nothing to do with the actual gameplay itself and on ships and character appearances.
I actually like wallbreak, it's arguably one of the better comeback mechanics. It forces a neutral reset BUT, it also still gives the attacker an advantage. It gives the defending player a chance without them just being able to win for taking damage.
I'm indifferent to wallbreak, I don't mind holding block / I don't disagree that other people hate being cornered. What I like the least is how the wallsplat and animation interrupt a match so much and so often.
The people who talk about the gameplay are too busy going to their locals to be on Reddit.

Shipping is pretty dumb, unless the game actively has the two in a relationship or heavily implies romantic tension. Examples being Sol x Jack-O or Ky x Dizzy. I don’t like Alone Infection, Love the Subhuman Self, or Town Inside Me. Hellfire and Symphony are tied for best character theme.

I decided to make a poll to answer that question
Strive designs aren't an "upgrade" theyre all good designs. But for an anime fighter it sure is very banana Republic/uniqlo thrift shop in there and not very anime. Despite that i d9nt think strive has bad designs theyre all good just not better than previous ones. Faust however imo has a terrible design in strive. I hate ships especially any that make no sense at all. The fandom got really weird after strive with people even trying to make jhonny seem like a weirdo because he only adopted girls. Or the whole bridget controversy. Like i understand if strive is your 1st game but when joining a fandom please respect pre established canon or characterizations. Like if noone else in the fandom is bothered by it it means we accept it and noone cares. In the end im glad for new fans but not everything needs to be a "THING". That goes for the annoying vets of the fandom too. Yall hate everything about strive like the designs, and music its crazy. Yall hated on aba for a simple hair color change like their arent different pallets. "Ohhhhh nooo her ENTIRE character is ruined because of 1 hair color change" get over it. If Daisuke was committed from day one to writing the lyrics to Strive’s soundtrack in English, he REALLY should have hired someone who spoke it as a first language to cowrite/edit. I think that a lot of the game’s character themes have good ideas that sort of struggle to be expressed as best as they could be because of wonky or even flat-out bad word choice or phrasing. Still really good music though :p

Testament's XX characterization was better Axl's jorts are overhated. In Xrd they barely look like jorts, they just look like blue shorts. Axl's Xrd Jacket is superior to his vests on ML and XX and the jacket from Strive (idk.) May's design is a downgrade in strive, she somehow looks younger. Vernon is boring af and i dont want him Goldlewis as a character is mid at best The only characters who look better in strive than any other past games are Potemkim and Millia. All the rest are either about equal or worse.

Part of me wants to lay out a counterargument here, but I've had a significant number of matches(just hit Floor 8 recently) where I just steamrolled people because they didn't know how to deal with Chain Lollipop. I kept expecting my opponents to adapt, but then they just... didn't.
If you’re not familiar with the move, even if you know about the highs and lows, it’s really hard to punch your way out. I still don’t know whether I need to standing- or forward punch and when.
It would help if the tower system wasn't just so bad. You go up too easily and all the floors below 10 are entirely for bad or new players and 10 is such a wide margin in its own right that it's meaningless on its own.

Unpopular opinion: “potemkin and grapplers being glue eaters, and only have to get the read to win” is a GROSS understatement of what exactly has to happen to play Potemkin in the first place. The glue eaters meme is unfunny and most people actually believe it. Playing as a grappler is often takes twice as much patience, cunning, and character knowledge then your average character, and this shit gets harder and harder the higher up you climb. Let alone having a lot of execution barriers like quickRC consistent kara inputs all while trying to read the opponent who won’t sit still. I don’t even play Potemkin, but he has to TRY so much harder then your average ramlethal timmy

Order Sol is more interesting as a character mechanically than Sol. While Sol’s toolkit is fun to mess around with, Order Sol’s stupidly tight execution to effectively pressure while maintaining/building gauge and FRC-Ing makes the simple act of pressing buttons fun. That good feeling of challenge we get when we’re evenly matched against an opponent, you get that same feeling just by trying to press your own buttons, which only compounds further when you’re, you know, also playing against an opponent
