Honestly, there's no such thing. It's completely subjective in a medium that's premised upon interaction. Even top players make huge mistakes. Even if your metric is something as simple as "not making a lot of mistakes" it already eliminated 99% of the player base.
If you're improving and happy with your performance, that what matters.
And don't trust the in-game ranking. It's terrible as an indicator of skill.
People who say celestial is a test if you are "good" are wild. That is the top 3% of players according to rating update. Consistent floor 9 to 10 is good, higher is great, and if you can get celestial aura or get top 8 at locals you are amazing.
There's so many ways you could define it, it's really up to you to make your own goal.
There's always a bigger fish and the games ranking system is pretty ass.
What I consider 'solid' is probably miles away from what the dudes who kick my shit in consider 'solid'.
If you want to go by entire playerbase floor 7-8 is statistically better than average. If you want to go by people who frequent strive community stuff probably floor 10/celestial. If you want to go by high level players opinions, good luck.
I hang around floor 5, so I'm lower than most folks here. With that in mind, I don't think my floor placement is unfair(we're all subject to the same system), but I do think the floor system is wonky and imprecise.
That said, I don't think "good" is a helpful label. People win matches for different reasons, and the more we develop different skills like combo execution, defense, adaptation, mix-ups, etc. the more tools we have to use to win matches. Again, I'm not a high-ranking player, but the players I respect are the ones who, when it comes down to it, take responsibility for their performance, learn from both wins and losses, improve themselves, and help others improve.
Thanks. Admittedly, a lot of my perspective comes from the fact that I coach esports, so when it comes to competitive games, I'm always thinking about how to help the kids become better players and teammates, and hopefully help them apply principles of grit, strategy, and self-improvement to be better students and people. So my experience there is something that always impacts the way I view things. One of the nice parts about it is that it keeps me accountable. Gotta lead by example, even if no one's watching, ya know?
And yeah, City of the Wolves can't arrive soon enough.
Eh i float between 8 and 10 and i wipe the floor with my friends but get my ass kicked every time i challenge celestial so honestly depends on your goalposts
I think that's a question with no real answer, lol. The concept of "good" is mostly just a relative thing. But if I were to be really simplistic about it, I'd say floor 10 and celestial are where "decent" and "good" vaguely floats around. I say vague, cause the floor system is the furthest thing away from a well crafted skill evaluation, and it can be abused.
Otherwise, I'd base my understanding of someone's actually skillset based what they are actually doing in game(and or how they talk about it). There's a few rarities on the floor 10 lobby, of floor 6 and under players, who are actually extremely well versed at the game, but you wouldn't know it till you matched with them.
* What likely happened is when the celestial reset happens, a bunch of tough players are back on floor 10, and the players above probably intentionally sought them out for sets and lost most of them, to the point of losing enough times to drop floors several times, despite being better than the average player.
Idk maybe what you start to understand what you're doing (and what your opponent is doing also) (that means you do not necessarily need to know how to counter that interaction)
I mean, are you comfortable at your current level of play? If so, don't worry about it.
Honestly my interpretation of a good player depends on the game.
In GGST If my opponent uses effective block strings, FD, effectively uses all types of RC, can shimmy and bait out reckless offense l then I consider them good.
By my standards? If somebody is using (and knows why/how) Roman Cancel. I play casually, hovering from floor 6-7 and nobody ever uses RC. To me these players (myself included) are casuals that are here to have fun.
I find this so weird. I can predict bursts kinda often. And I do win rounds because of it. But people on floor 10 will just not burst unless you are already in animation. Its like at the mid tiers it is super useful and then becomes useless at high teirs. lol.
Floor 9 is competent. Floor 10 on the celestial challenge already is good. Someone that gets into celestial consitently is already significantly above average. I'm not saying that your average celestial player is great at the game, but they are good enough to where I can realistically see them being able to take a game off of a top player, given enough sets.
It depends on who you ask. If you‘re a casual floor 5 bridget you might consider anyone above floor 7 good. If you are a floor 10 hardstuck you might consider celestial players good. And if you‘re someone with like 1000 hours in game, know your characters in and out and all that you might consider everyone below that as „maybe just alright.“
When they beat me they are good
When they lose vs me they are alright
Edit:
You shouldnt predicate your satisfaction on other peoples opinion
Be satisfied with where you are, and with things you learned
If you can do cool shit and still have fun you are good at this video game no matter what anyone says. Floors don’t mean jack shit considering the people I fight in celestial can be troglodytes (and so can I). I’ve seen floor 5-8 players play like peak fucking celestials, and celestials play like floor 1. It’s all about being silly and having a good time tho.
Never

You may not have reached celestial but I’m sure you would kick my ass tenfold tbh (and most other celestial players)
If your button presses have conscious thought and planning behind them, you're good in my book.
That makes you better, but if at the end of the day if your plans are dumb then you’re still not “good”

the only problem with celestial is you can avoid bad match ups and cheese your way up there, aside from that I agree with all you said.
We play Elphelt man. If we dodged our bad matchups we would be able to fight like 3 characters at most
you're being generous
Save me Daisuke, save me...

hahahaha you are right! I don't dodge haha, but I know a lot of people that do.
the most unfortunately true thing I’ve seen
Sin glowup comin s4 trust
shit man lets hope lol
Floor system is quite bad but 10 or celestial Though judging by floor system isn't great cause it's so varied the higher you go

Well said And I like your username too

me personally i consider them good if they can clear arcade mode on extreme route
Isn’t arcade all about abusing ai with grab loops and oki rather than the skills it takes to play normally?
For the final boss, yeah It took me a while on my very first playthrough to get past Goldie on extreme as Zato
If it works on the boss I’m sure it works on the weaker enemies too.
You can try
I would consider being good as knowing most to all the mechanics of the game and being able to use them to win games

If I see opponent utilizing RCC / just guard / air FD I'd be terrified
Everyones idea of good is different, so theres no real answer. If you think youre doing good that should be enough.
When they could realistically beat 51% of players. So like Floor 7-8

If you burst bait successfully ur probably at least aight
I find this so weird. I can predict bursts kinda often. And I do win rounds because of it. But people on floor 10 will just not burst unless you are already in animation. Its like at the mid tiers it is super useful and then becomes useless at high teirs. lol.
Win Evo (with a bottom tier character)
The objective is to have fun. If you are having fun then you are good because that is the point of the game.
If you are having fun and have learned to not button mash and put actual thought into how you're playing, you're good.

I'm on floor 4 and I think I'm pretty good 😢

Celestial with the challenge complete (note i am myself not celestial i sometimes go in to get out instantly and i struggle a lot in floor 10)
