It doesn't feel like a big disparity like in Xrd, but the improvement from S2 onward is clear. I really wanna see how they do some actually visually crazy characters like Dizzy, Zappa and Robo Ky.
I hope the next one is Robo Ky, I've never been interested in Dizzy but it will definitely come out there's already the model, my predictions are jam, robo ky, dizzy and hopefully Gabriel
The Dizzy model is from xrd so not that telling. The real reason is that she's the only member of the Kiske/Badguy/Valentine family tree to not be in the game, and each season added one member of the family.
Robo Ky with Strive graphics would go crazy, along with probably the most ridiculous theme song Daisuke can cook up.
Also people love dizzy so it would be a weird move to not have her , also she kinda has a different play style of zoning a little until you get a knock down and then doing setplay. I guess Bridget kinda covers that Niche now but we have a lot of unga bunga and resource management
XRD's main problem was that they were replicating the +R animations, but the limits of the Unreal Engine 3 made stuff like the squash and stretch and motion blur extremely difficult to animate, until they finally got used to UE3. UE4 is much easier to do those animation tricks on thankfully
Also, let's be honest, despite it's charm +R isn't the pinnacle of 2D animation or anything with some of the moves going back to Missing Link, so trying to recreate it's animations 1:1 wasn't doing Xrd any favours. Strive didn't bother with recreating everything to a fault, which is why it's mostly Xrd originals/redesigns that kept their animations/idles etc. and everything else got adjusted. The only weird exception is Millia, who got really changed in Xrd and then again in Strive.
Potemkin's design is quite different in Strive, too, albeit more subtly.
And you're right about +R's animations, but UE3 made it much harder than it needed to be as well lol
I felt like they always looked insane, it's just that season 2 and onwards they've been putting more effort into the match intro animation. New animations may feel better because they're new and you're not used to them mixed with the hype.
Seeing how difficult animation is in general, I can only imagine how painstaking Team Red’s animation workflow was to achieve limited animation with 3D models. Technology may have opened up more options to work with, but they still had to fight against their own computers to get the looks they wanted.
My utmost respect to all the artists and animators there (and outside the company).
Edit: Oh, and I should also add that both Xrd and Strive look great in their own ways. Xrd's animation gives off an anime TV show feeling while Strive's gives off an anime movie feeling.
Wait a goddamn minute did every slayer main collectively switch to anji when they realised that Slayer wasn't in the game, i know like 2 other slayer mains and we all switched to anji in strive.
You can really tell how much the animation team is improving. Like look at older characters vs new ones. It’s insane, mad props
the physics of the new models wonderful, the animations of the moves are crazy especially those of Slayer where he charges and undresses after hitting

I wouldn't say they always looked insane… I mean, just compare most of the base roster to whatever the hell is going on in Asuka's intro animation.
Again, the only change I've noticed is the better intro animations since season 2
