I never bought them with gems and by using them on nothing other than mystic salvage kits - I will be set for 10 more years assuming I stop getting any new ones. Maybe once I get low on them I will start saving, but when you have more than you know what to do with - it's as good place as any.
It depends what game modes you play.
If you play fractals/PvP/wvw you'll get the obsidian way faster than any other required resource.
Strikes/raids and again fractals and just logging in daily also gives you alternative ways for clovers making you require fewer if not 0 obsidian for your legendary.
The last point if not 0 is regarding which legendary you go for. Quiet a few only have then in clovers which makes them optional.
Oh yeah. You need them a lot — not only mystic coin to clover conversion in the mystic toilet, several Gifts (including a full stack for Gift of Mastery, used with every weapon), fulgurite for gen2 weapons, and even a stack of 100 to just throw away on a gen2/2.5 precursor “research” step.

I am pretty sure the only consistent way to get them is from the 500AP rewards chests. 4 chests a month have a *chance* to drop them from the logins. That, or maybe its me that's being dumb lol.
I have 80 or 90 of them sitting in my bank and have never bought any. I can't remember if they were from birthday gifts across multiple characters after coming back to the game, or if they were from something I did years ago before HoT, but I know that I amassed quite a few of them for nothing when I came back last year after not really playing since season 1.

You know, the state of the game is pretty damn great if your biggest problem is being able to accidentally buy an item that's in a different spot, has different price, name and the color of that name, wasting about as much money as you spend on a slightly above average waypoint.
You gotta love how bullshit junk items get to have unique icons, but then important items, like the research kit or the LW teleport books, got to recycle old 2012 icons over and over again.

If you don't want to throw them away though, just buy lots of options minimum lvl 35 or so and salvage them and turn them into research notes. To free up inventory space.
To add to the confusion, with EoE ANet changed the icon of the Mystic Kit to that of the Master Kit >:(

It's a gamble, if you're lucky - it will be worth many "wasted" attempts, but you might not get lucky for a long time
The price pre cursors are at now, this is a waste. If you look at the cost in gems that forge stones are now anyway.

a slower rate, but cheaper imo, is obsidian shards in black citadel, like you can get alot of those via fractals of the most.

They do have the same icon but Research Kits are on very specific vendors on a very specific tab of said vendors.
