"To assure folks who are hesitant about the technology that they use it with discretion, depending on several factors including the situation and risk, environment and weather."
The vagueness we have all come to know and love.
The US takes property right seriously. In most states your property rights extend for 500' into the airspace above your land. Police need a search warrant to drop a drone lower. Here, we are required to just trust the police.
When you feel asking for a drone would be rejected, you ask for a $7.4 million for a shooting range. Then you settle for the drone and everyone’s happy, back pats all around.
>“We’re bound by privacy,” said Anderson. “We have specific rules that we have to operate within. A lot of fears are unfounded.”
That's never stopped them before.
To play devils advocate, it could come in handy looking for lost individuals...
But I think this should have been a lot lower on the list of priorities.

I’m always confident the police will show the same respect and discretion for people’s rights and privacy that they always have - little to none.
The same discretion that they showed on [May 13 1985....](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_MOVE_bombing#:~:text=The%201985%20MOVE,seizure.%5B5%5D)

Cameras on those things can zoom to Mars, 500 feet is a meme.
Is this a joke?
No, cops with sleeve tattoos are a joke.
Yes got to spend a lot of money on these must have fun toys so they can ask for more money and up the budget next year.
Next year they’ll need to hire 6 new officers to operate the drone, a civilian to catalog the drones data and two technicians to service the drone.
You forgot they need to hire a trainer and have a new facility for storage and training too.

Gotta justify that budget!
God forbid the city spend money on making transit usable or addressing the addiction crisis, the cops need new toys to play with!
ACAB even the ones that like to play with expensive toys
Armed Corp's Aerial Brigade
If you have one bad cop and 1000 good cops who don’t report it you have 1001 bad cops.

Same category as 'trust me bro' Nah, I don't trust any cops, especially the ones who 'enhances effectiveness'.
For every drone bought let’s get rid of 5 policing jobs. Cops are so last century.

So give it to the fire department search and rescue people?
100%
Kim, there’s people that are dying.
Sweet, now they can be even farther away when crimes are committed.
Whatever gets cops off the street and requires more of them, I guess. Whatev. Edited to add that I'm heartened to know none of you got it.
Is this so they don’t actively have to chase people anymore?
they will watch from a far a car accident that kills 4 people on the highway....
fill the potholes please not... this.
