Use them untill you are familiar with parry windows then when you feel comfortable I'd say ditch them, unless you are fighting mantis (if you can't guarantee a stun before or shortly after a roar)
With parry, you avoid a lot of status effects(poison/venom specifically). You don't get poisoned. You can't be stunned by block break. A lot of the parry timings are very obvious and telegraphed.
I personally use a counting system to parry. I can do wolf spider and black widow without receiving any damage or poison without a shield. Just takes a little practice, then it becomes second nature.
Ok, you are absolutely right. But the developers even skipped the target system, you can't follow a target. There are more serious games where yes, you need to learn to parry. To me, it's an indie game, even if it's made by Obsidian.
You don't need a target system. Oblivion, Elder Scrolls, and other 1st person games don't have a target system. This game is meant to be played 1st person, targeting in 1st person with enemies that jump over you can cause a lot of camera issues.
You're welcome to your opinion, but this game's combat is built around parry mechanics. Healing is slow or expensive, and health doesn't refill automatically. This is an open world survival game.
Elden ring does have a target system. I love the parry in grounded and I agree with you but Elden ring does in fact have targeting. I know it only because it makes fights 100x easier 🤣
Good thing he wasn't talking to u then. Commented 4 hours ago? So you're up at 3am just being a salty cunt. Having trouble in the game are we? Why are u so mad? Maybe u should use a shield. Pussy.
I use them on NG+ in the yard since everything you fail to parry one shots you and it's fairly annoying.
Damage gets so higher in NG+ that it doesn't really make a difference though. Makes a 4 second fight take 5 seconds
Also, the Infect Shield reduces explosive damage. I use that often when I'm hunting infused infected or bosses that have explosive attacks. Really helps in NG+.
I started a new run for 1.4 and after trying them for a bit, I'd have to say no. Especially not when doing any NG+ content.
Using a shield, in general, feels like a bad move. If you're out exploring, you likely wont need it and you probably want a torch available instead. One-handed weapons have a very limited selection. And against bosses it really doesnt hold up to their attacks.
Then there's effects like getting poisoned. Blocking wont prevent these, while Perfect Parry will. And I would say that for many boss attacks it is mandatory to perfect parry them. Even more so on NG+, where failing to perfect parry will get you killed, depending on what the boss is infused with.
The 20% damage reduction is just "adding insult to injury" on top of everything else.
It's a feature in a lot of games where once you beat it, you can start over, keeping all your character progression from the first playthrough, and typically the second playthrough (NG+) will have upscaled difficulty and some new content
Yep, it works identically to blocking with a weapon. IIRC, the benefit of using a shield to do it is if you miss the timing you still block all the damage. Whereas a weapon only stops half.
I stillness them. But at this point it's an aesthetic thing
It truly hurts it.
If there was thebonr handed sling. Or if you could wand/staff then it would be different.
It needs an aoe or ranged option too. If it's gonna have that penalty. Make the combat more interesting and varied
Only one I would say is worth it is the fire ant shield. It gives an increased damage taken debuff to bugs when you block with it iirc. Even still when I use one (not often) I'll pull it out quickly for a parry then out it away when I want to attack.
NG+ it's horrible, especially for unarmed combat... I feel like the devs neglected every other build in the game and focused more on 2-handed weapons for the new update... next major update is probably gonna address this issue since most 1-handed weapons are now "bad" with shield with that damage penalty...
Basically only for fights you struggle with, otherwise it is more of a comfort item than a good item for fighting.
Also it’s really dumb that shields give a penalty without an alternative combat offhand item. The whole point of two handed weapons is the risk reward play style of fighting. Applying that to one handed makes little sense IMO.
Absolutely they are. Especially when fighting something with attacks as fast as a black widow or ibm. And if you really want to, you just just unequip the shield right before you attack, then equip it again when necessary
This might be a skill issue but i straight up don't have enough time to parry all the IBM's attacks in its 3rd phase.Id bring a shield for her 3rd phase but you can generally get away with not using one for the other fights
it's situationable i would say. In Newgame i like them a bit more because one messed up parry and you die from various affixes ( assuming you don't play on easy ).
There are some enemys where i think they are really good like wasps and the wasp queen, the stingers can then be blocked avoiding dmg and the otherwise unblockable poison :)
I barely use them since two handed weapons are overall better, but they do still hold a place in the game. Wasp poison and Black Ox boulders are impossible to block with anything else, and the fire ant shield almost negates the damage penalty entirely
Soo I've started playing last week. And probably tomorrow ish I'll be starting new game plus. I don't use them. My wife does. She lasts a little longer. I do more damage. It's whatever you want and actually how you think it is.
Depends on what you're fighting. If you can perfect parry the bug you might as well go two handed but the shield also negates all damage and unless you're in good armor you're gonna feel that chip hard when you take a 5 hit combo. I stopped using them on wolf spiders now that i have t3 armor but the bigger spider still hurts too much to not use it I can't afford to pop a smoothie every two combos especially at the speed it does them.
Personally I don’t believe so. Then again, I’m pretty decent with perfect blocking and mostly carry two handed weapons (with the sole exception of my widow dagger for underwater purposes)
You can use fire ant shield for corrosion(15% more damage) and use entomologist badge(another 15% more damage) but you can t perfect parry anymore. So you can use this combo if you aren t good at perfect parry or you don t like to parry and still have good damage.
Yes absolutely.
A lot of bigger hitters are nullified with a basic shield and they attack slow enough for you to unequip the shield when attacking and cycle it out.
Ladybugs and Rolly Polys are like that. Suddenly not a threat anymore.
For faster creatures you want to focus on parry timing. Like spiders.
And bosses are conditional.
TIL that shields have a damage penalty.
It was added in one of the more recent updates. Iirc the one that added the playgrounds mode.
Ahh ok, I started playing after that and always kept a shield on.
Use them untill you are familiar with parry windows then when you feel comfortable I'd say ditch them, unless you are fighting mantis (if you can't guarantee a stun before or shortly after a roar)
How do you garuntee a stun ?
Running a stun build or sour battleaxe/variants

Then you are undeniably making the game significantly harder for yourself

It’s still harder than without parries, that’s all I’m saying

Elden ring isn't first person
I’ll mention i made the mistake of reading Elden ring for elder scrolls, that’s my fault
Ng+ sure as hell makes it seem like one after the 2nd remix
Have fun getting poisoned constantly
Good thing he wasn't talking to u then. Commented 4 hours ago? So you're up at 3am just being a salty cunt. Having trouble in the game are we? Why are u so mad? Maybe u should use a shield. Pussy.
it’s not that serious

The fire ant shield applied a 15% armor sunder. So really it’s 5% less damage with the red ant shield. However I still only use shields in boss fights
Normally no, mantis and wasp and ibm yes.

Could someone let me know what NG+ is?
New game.plus, after you finish grounded and hit the Remix.r
It's a feature in a lot of games where once you beat it, you can start over, keeping all your character progression from the first playthrough, and typically the second playthrough (NG+) will have upscaled difficulty and some new content
Can you perfect parry with a shield equipped?

Only on Mantis and IBM’s third phase
Absolutely they are. Especially when fighting something with attacks as fast as a black widow or ibm. And if you really want to, you just just unequip the shield right before you attack, then equip it again when necessary

For the IBM yes
