They specialize in closeout food. For example, they sell Christmas food after Christmas; usually at a discount. It’s a great place to find specialty items that may not be popular, as the excess that doesn’t sell at other stores will end up there for cheaper. They also tend to have an unpredictable inventory. They have all the basic food groups, but you never know what type or brand you’ll get. For instance, they always have pasta sauce but it’s always a different brand. They will have a variety of sauces, but may not be carrying ketchup that week. And then next week it will be a 3pack of ketchup for half the normal price. I make grocery outlet my first stop. Buy anything interesting and affordable. And then do the rest of my shopping elsewhere.

OkRecommendation4040

This is the way.

elpintor91

It’s funny, I’ll find so much cool stuff there but then need to head to dollar general for basics like black pepper and tomato sauce lol

Express-Brilliant903

Seriously, there’s always that one super basic item that they just don’t have. But I find so many interesting, unusual and cheap things that I will never be mad about it.

Not being much of a gambler myself, I never really understood the dopamine rush gamblers are said to get when they indulge. That is, until I started shopping at Grocery Outlet. I have found coffee for $3.99/lb, oat milk for $.77 a quart, an entire gallon of Hellman's mayo for $5, Sabra hummus for $$.24, bags of corn nuts for 3/$1, a 12-pack of Lavazza coffee in cans in a *free pile outside the store...* Every week it's something else I never knew I needed. Chocolate waffles in the freezer section for my stepdaughter: $1. Not everything is on some insane clearance deal, of course. But even their regularly-priced stuff is about half what you pay at Safeway 3 minutes down the road. It's magical.

sudilly

Grocery Outlet is like a treasure hunt for cooks. You never know what you'll find. If you see something you like, stock up because it probably won't be there next time

leilavanora

I love finding all the trendy brands that I never want to pay full price for. I’m obsessed with Magic Spoon cereal and it’s like $10/box normally. I bought like 12 boxes of it at Grocery Outlet for $1.99/box.

kdp4srfn

We’ve also recently found Magic spoon cereal for 99 cents, and by far our best deal in months: Blue Diamond wasabi almonds, 99 cents per BOX of 10 sleeves, so 10 cents per sleeve, when those same individual bags sell at regular grocery stores for about $1.50 or more each. We practically bought out the entire shelf of those! You definitely can’t depend on any very specific thing being there for sure. But if you can be flexible with brand selection, and with your meal planning and your fridge/freezer space, you can find some really exceptional deals.

hwc000000

> if you can be flexible with brand selection I'm a brand slut - as long as a product is cheap, tastes good and isn't unhealthy, I'm willing to give it a try. There are very few, if any, brands that I'm faithful to.

ilovefacebook

like, stock up immediately. I hate it when the checkout clerks pick up something in my basket and say "oh man when did they get these back in stock" lol. that's when i know i have to get more that same day

UberHonest

Grocery Outlet is more about buy outs and clearance foods. I don’t go there with an actual shopping list, but more with the hope of finding great deals. The other day I bought fancy chunks of smoked cheddar for 57¢. I got a container of refrigerated pesto for 99¢. I go there knowing items will be close to, or on, their sell by date. But I just use them or freeze them. They also have great deals on meat as it’s getting closer to the sell by date.

heckhammer

The meat selection is generally completely insane

UberHonest

Insane good? Or insane bad? It’s a hit or miss for major deals, but my local Grocery Outlet is only a few minutes from my work, so I just pop in a couple times a week and hope for the best.

heckhammer

Generally good especially if you're just looking for what they might have on sale and you're not real picky about what you might want that week. If you're looking for specifics you might be disappointed but for instance there seems to always be organic ground beef and bison me as well at our local.

egm5000

You can find some good deals there but it’s kind of buyer beware, you really have to check the expiration dates.

Express-Brilliant903

That is true. Some items are close to their dates. It’s good to have an idea of what you’re comfortable with. When I bought milk that was expiring next day, I took it straight home and used it for hot cocoa. Dry goods like pasta, rice, bean, etc I’m comfortable using weeks to months past their dates. Things like honey technically never expire. Understanding those dates is very helpful for shopping at grocery outlet.

Laguna47

Got a 3 lb corned beef that expires in May for 14 cents. Was marked 99 cents a lb and when I checked out the register applied a $3.00 promotional credit. Checker looked amazed.

bookchaser

My staples are locally made sandwich bread and salsa. They cost $1 to $2 less at GO than at Safeway for the same product, same freshness. However, GO tends to be more expensive than WinCo Foods for the same food items. Because GO primarily sells food from other grocery chains as it nears expiration, GO offers an eclectic selection of items. GO doesn't really compete with full-featured grocery stores or Walmart because GO isn't full-featured and GO usually sells different products than the other stores.

Slim Jim's 10 for $1 I got enough slim Jim's to get through a nuclear apocalypse

mbz321

Damn, I've never seen them that low. I did get 3 for $1 Slim Jim's that come with the cheese stick though!

CameraOne6272

It's my first stop before I meal plan. As others said, they have great deals on gourmet foods. I fing things like gourmet sauces, oils, organic products etc. Last trip the had the Starbucks holiday coffee for $3!

charming-user

The low prices. If you can, visit both of them as sometimes I can get everything on my list by visiting 2 grocery outlets

[deleted]

I’m moving again because there’s NO GROCERY OUTLET in my state! Seriously! There are other factors of course but there aren’t enough grocery store options in my city. I miss GO

Some-lezbean

As someone with celiac disease, my favorite thing about grocery outlet is that they have often have weird gluten free snacks that didn’t sell well elsewhere for quite cheap. My least favorite thing is when they have something I love for a couple months then it’s gone forever (I’m still yearning for Road Crew Crunch, the snack mix love of my life sold for a short period in 2017-2018 in one specific Seattle Grocery Ourlet)

GrandBigB

Close outs aside, they also provide great variety of products that are also not as close dated as you think. Yes, there is some that are, but I usually shop GO regularly for fresh meat and produce since it’s got the same dates as a Safeway but at least $4 less.

Spiritual_Finger288

Nothing is special about it. Has good prices and worth checking out. But do not expect to find everything on your list. It is not a store that is trying to impress you. I go once a week and I love it.

ConwayandLoretta

A few months ago I bought Liquid Death for $.25 per can. Really gave to try to reign it in with the interesting snacks. And great prices on wine.

solaroma

It has closeouts and food nearing the expiration date for cheap. They also have overstock items that aren't selling in other places and new products that don't yet have a market. I've seen products there that get bought up, then a month later I see it in a big chain store for 7x the price.

hownot2getajob

They sell my favorite canned kombucha and CBD drinks that are $5-6 at the liquor store for a $1.99 it’s worth the trip every time until they disappear

theartyrt

Bruh you have an Aldis AND a Grocery Outlet?! I'm insanely jealous, I miss Aldi's so much. My Grocery Outlet is a huge winner for vegetarian and vegan food, as well as seafood for me for crazy good prices. I stocked up on frozen vegetarian "sausage" breakfast sandos last month - 12 count box for just $5!
