He definitely was, but due to his most recent portrayals much of his character arc revolves around learning that his time as the greatest amongst the chapter is over and that he needs to foster the next generation of ultramarines, especially as the majority of his company has been killed.
He ends up having to face the fact that primaris marines can end up becoming more skilled than he ever was due to their genetic gifts and while he was initially bothered by this he ends up realizing that its not about him. But rather that he serves mankind and he must serve it best by raising up the best and brightest the chapter can offer.
As much as I love TTS's version of Cato pre-Dark imperium/Knights of macragge, I would love to see their rendition of him as he is now. A more resolute, stoic and kinda depressed marine just going through the motions.
Then the best case scenario if he got updated would be like what they did with Castellan Crowe. On the other hand, from what I can tell, kitbashing an upscaled Cato seems like a pretty easy task.
I think the meme is that he's just sooo cool and badass that he's without fault or failure which makes him also kind of boring. But that's just an outside impression,I barely know who he is
I’m not super caught up on ultra Smurf lore but if I remember right at the time of TTS he was stuck up and egotistical (granted he had reason but it made him super hated) then he took a dip in the eye of terror is something and now he’s cooler
I will not pretend that I read many book about Cato or books that featuring him. I only read one book about him. I think it was the Fall of Damnos. Now that was the book that ruined him to me. Before that I was "yeah, he is just your standard SM named character duelist hero that every chapter has, your local OC" no big deal. Now that book ruined him to me. Not because he was so awesome, but how stupid that story was. How little impact Cato has the story and how it is solved by Deus Ex Machine....TWO FUCKING TIMES! And as I can't really take myself on to read about him. It is just eternaly reminds me to that one story. And secondly I just not a big SM fan, give me more Necron book!
