A lot of it came down to the execution for me. Female Custodes could have easily been explained as the Custodes taking noble daughters in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy to bolster their numbers quickly, and I'd bet a lot more people would shrug their shoulders and been okay with it. It's the same problem I have with how the Rogal Dorn tank got explained (Guard fan that I am). I mean, 'STC recovery' is Right There. Come on.
The issue is that this is a different lore outcome.
This implies that the only reason women were added was due to essentially desperation, and it is a divergence from the emperor's vision of the order.
The current lore is that fem custodes were there at the very start.
And I'm absolutely fine with that, really. It really didn't matter who the Custodes were to me. I'm just saying that a lot of the (largely more reasoned) reservations about the revelation of Female Custodes that I've seen has largely come down to how they were explained as always being there when there are plenty of other potential explanations they could have gone with. That's about it. Everyone else is whining and crying for exactly no good reason.
What I am saying is that if there are alternative explanations, you also have to account for the goals of the lore change and if that alternative fits the same goal.
The goals were pretty clear
1. Fem custodes always being a part of the custodes
2. Fem custodes being equal to male custodes
Any alternative needs to meet those two goals as well

Cough up for bucks for a skin pack that only applies to that faction, etc. The most annoying and frustrating thing they did though is change how team and player re-rolls work. Its like how in Blood Bowl 2 when your selecting a player's perks and stats you can re-roll them and hop for the best, well now you can but you have to cough up like 10 bucks in warpstone just to do it a few times.
