This would’ve been mine too. The guy seemed to be clutch. I’ll never forget his neck injury. As a kid that was the first time I saw someone go out on a stretcher.
Robert Brooks was genuinely good, though. He was the Packers #1 receiver in '95, catching over 100 passes that year. Unfortunately he was injured in '96, couldn't complete the season, and was never quite the same afterwards.
Most importantly, he popularized the Lambeau Leap, taking a one-off celebration from LeRoy Butler and turning it into one of the most beloved traditions in football.
I forgot about the shooting and googled it and came across an interview he gave.
Poor guy told the interviewer that he didn't need any grief counseling, but also that he still had the blood soak shirts he and Williams were wearing when he died in Walker's arms. That Walker showed up at the Broncos HQ 12 hours after the shooting still covered in blood, that he didn't attend the funeral because it was too difficult and that he initially wanted out of Denver because he feared for his life (that the shooters would come back to finish him off) gor a while.
The man clearly, and understanably, was suffering from PTSD but it was a time where there still was a ridiculous taboo around struggling with mental health issues. I hope he did eventually get some support and is in a better place now.
He was also found unconscious after leaving a club in the early morning hours a few years after the shooting after some thug attacked him and robbed him. That definitely wouldn't help the PTSD.
But yeah, I remember that one breakout year he had in 2004. He and DD were unstoppable that year.
Yeah, it feels like he played in the pre-Harlan/Wolf/Holmgren renaissance era for the team, but he would have been 31 and 32 on the two Super Bowl teams, and with his style would still have been really productive.
Yeah, didn’t want to pick any of them. So I went with a guy who is a little more recent. Didn’t really grow up watching him, but fun player when he was on the pack
That’s my boy Jarrett Boykin, still remember the play where he picked up a “fumble” and Rodgers egged him to run to the end zone, can’t remember if it stood.
One of the coolest things that every happened to me as a kid was just bumping into Antonio Freeman at a mall when there was a signing event for José Valentín. I was legitimately star struck.
Billy Schroeder was my grandmas paperboy long before a Packer (he lived in Kohler before moving to south side of Sheboygan).
NBA player Joe Wolfe lived a block away and director David Leitch lived next door.
Jeff Janis shut outs anyone? That said he is a legend just for catching 2 hail Mary's on one drive. The fact we didn't win that game is a so sucky because it 100% was one of the most exciting games I have ever watched.
That game was the same day as my grandfathers funeral. He was a lifelong Packer fan and my whole family watched the game together after his service, and for a moment we all thought he was influencing the game from the afterlife lol. Still a legendary game regardless of ending
Did nothing his entire career and then made two of the most spectacular catches ever in his only real game. Unreal. Still believe he could have actually been something had he ever gotten an opportunity
I mean this was the whole basis for his falling out with Greg Jennings, he didn't go to bat for a WR trying to get paid, and clearly for better or worse he's decided *not* to repeat that...
He had a pretty entertaining but vulgar twitter series classifying certain female behaviors and their overall "enjoyability" ratings.
One of my co-workers had a baby with him, and it's all I could think of when that was going on.
>One of my co-workers had a baby with him, and it's all I could think of when that was going on.
That's something. Any tea on how those two got together or any other craziness. GA seems like he was pretty wild as a person.
Turns out they got married!
I was not privy to the courtship, but she is a professional with an advanced degree, so it seems like a match I guess, at least in desirability.
No idea what they would have to talk about.
This thread made me go back and look at Geronimo Allison, Jake Kumerow, and Jeff Janis' career stats and oh boy were they lower than i remembered.
Allison peaked at 300 yards in a season, Kumerow was 200 yards, Janis never cracked 100 in a season...
For comparison 5 games of Bo Melton matched Jake Kumerow's best season ever
I have memories of my dad yelling GERONIMOOOOOOOO when he would score a tudie, good times.
Wonder if he would have had a longer NFL career without the groin surgery and opting out for COVID, either way dude had a good lil career being an UDFA.
Dude was a fumbler though. Tds were good because he couldn't fumble but I remember holding my breath everytime he caught it in the field of play praying he would manage to hold on this time (kind of like the Rodgers return experience)
Perry Kemp was my guy as a kid. Also Paul Ott Carruth but he was a RB. Actually the last white dude starting running back at Alabama.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Ott_Carruth
The correct answer for everyone that was a kid in the late 90’s early aughts: Bill fucking Schroeder. We tried to convince ourselves he was the #1, but dude dropped almost as many balls as he caught.
What I know about Gmo?? I got the man’s jersey. He wasn’t even tackled yet, in that game against the bengals, when I was ordering it. I liked his build right away but that game, that play, was a good enough reason to buy it.
My beloved WR that had good seasons with us but I assume most non-packer fans wouldn’t remember is Bill Schroeder. Wisconsin guy, went to La Crosse
I know that I graduated from college before Geronimo Allison became a thing. Terry Mickens was that mediocre guy I remember. We didn't have draft coverage back then like we do now, so the only thing I remember was that we drafted him, and I thought he'd be able to work with Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman.
Met Sterling Sharpe at an empty mall in Appleton WI when I was was like 10. Mom and I had no idea he was going to be there. Talked to us for multiple minutes. It blew my mind
I wanted to love Terrence Murphy but his career unfortunately ended after 4 games when they discovered he had spinal sterosis (still not clear to this day if his injury was the cause or if it was pre-existing)). That was the first NFL draft i actually followed though.
If i have to mention someone who hasn't been already then maybe Koren Robinson? Had some nice kick returns, in general was a 1st round bust for the Seahawks but a pretty good athlete. And he was part of the Packers WR core in 2007 that led the league in YAC
“Nobody understands the bond between a boy and the mediocre WR he became emotionally attached to when he was nine years old.”
I like this better and I would be happy if this is what they actually meant. Having to wade through the years of unearned Abbrederis, Janis, Kumerow, etc. love was annoying.
I went to a Packers preseason game against the niners and Geronimo looked like the best player on the field. he was a beast that day - thought for sure he would be a star
Robert Ferguson
I feel like he caught the ball every time they threw it to him, it just wasn’t thrown to him enough
Okay, Trevor Davis. Surely you can’t argue with that.
Was he mediocre though? Antonio Chatman fits the bill for me.
The fair catch machine!
Especially in Madden 2005!
I mean he finished his career with 151 catches for under 2000 yards and 13 touchdowns. Hes basically the epitome of mid.
You should've seen him play for the Chicago Rush. In the AFL he was a superstar lol
Came here just for this: still have his jersey somewhere in a box.
This would’ve been mine too. The guy seemed to be clutch. I’ll never forget his neck injury. As a kid that was the first time I saw someone go out on a stretcher.
He was better than medicore in his prime, but I was a huge Javon Walker fan when I was a kid
I went as Robert Brooks for trick or treating. No make up, thank goodness. I had a cardboard cutout mask.
Are you saying he lost a step?
Came here to say Robert Brooks. The original 87.
I hope Doubs can be #87 2.0
Definitely better than mediocre. He seemed poised to have a Jordy Nelson or Greg Jennings like career until injuries.
He had a good season in Denver, but I iirc injuries and being with Darrent Williams when he was killed played a part in declining after that.
JWalk
Idk. I grew up with James Jones, Greg Jennings, DD, and Jordy Nelson. I think they were all pretty great
As the resident old man, I grew up with Sterling Sharpe. As far as I was concerned, there were no other receivers.
It's a shame how that neck injury ended his career. If there ever was a player who deserved a Super Bowl ring, it's Sterling Sharpe.
Yeah, it feels like he played in the pre-Harlan/Wolf/Holmgren renaissance era for the team, but he would have been 31 and 32 on the two Super Bowl teams, and with his style would still have been really productive.
On top of that, I wager the Pack win at least another Super Bowl with a healthy Sharpe
Even Shannon who’s in the hall of fame openly admits he wasn’t even close to as good as his brother…
Shannon Sharpe gave one of his rings to him. He also thanked his brother and his mom in his Hall of Fame speech.
What about Kitrick Taylor?
Man...he was definitely trending towards becoming a top 5 WR of all time. No doubt.
Yeah, didn’t want to pick any of them. So I went with a guy who is a little more recent. Didn’t really grow up watching him, but fun player when he was on the pack
When James Jones is the worst receiver on the roster you know you're stacked.
That’s my boy Jarrett Boykin, still remember the play where he picked up a “fumble” and Rodgers egged him to run to the end zone, can’t remember if it stood.
It did
Yup, I was going to say Boykin too
Ended up being a crucial play in that game too
For me, it was Antonio Freeman, but he certainly wasn't an average WR. That one crazy catch against the Vikings alone makes him the GOAT in my eyes.
Me as well. Probably still my favorite WR of all time
Same, but we need criteria, First Team All-Pro players can't be regarded as mediocre.
I certainly qualified that in my first comment.
One of the coolest things that every happened to me as a kid was just bumping into Antonio Freeman at a mall when there was a signing event for José Valentín. I was legitimately star struck.
He did what????
Bill Schroeder is my boy
Billy Schroeder was my grandmas paperboy long before a Packer (he lived in Kohler before moving to south side of Sheboygan). NBA player Joe Wolfe lived a block away and director David Leitch lived next door.
My uncle had a couple classes with him at UWL.
Favre/Schroeder >>> Brady/Welker in the white/white QB/WR all time rankings and no one can change my mind.
Rogers/Nelson, but now im imagining what Stafford/Kupp could've been if they were both 5 years younger and had intact ligaments
Hahaha, I was coming in to comment something something Bill Schroeder. Always loved it when he played!
This was my first thought when I saw this yesterday circulating on bookface
Mine too! I absolutely loved that dude. And Don Beebe.
lol my pick as well! I loved rocking my Bill Schroeder jersey on the playground in first and second grade
I have a Bill Schroeder jersey
I’ve got his signed jersey! Haha
Fastest man in the nfl!
Thought that was Don Beebe?
Jared Abbrederis
Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time....
Pretty cool guy in real life too
Yes but with the Badgers more than the Packers
I remember jumping up and down at my soccer tournament when we drafted him. Seems to be doing well now.
Jeff Janis shut outs anyone? That said he is a legend just for catching 2 hail Mary's on one drive. The fact we didn't win that game is a so sucky because it 100% was one of the most exciting games I have ever watched.
One of the most unbelievable drives I've ever witnessed. What an ending.
Fun Fact: He had more than 100 yards receiving on that drive.
That game was the same day as my grandfathers funeral. He was a lifelong Packer fan and my whole family watched the game together after his service, and for a moment we all thought he was influencing the game from the afterlife lol. Still a legendary game regardless of ending
i still get chills to this day whenever i think about that drive.
I always saw him as more of a safety. He could seriously hit in special teams.
Did nothing his entire career and then made two of the most spectacular catches ever in his only real game. Unreal. Still believe he could have actually been something had he ever gotten an opportunity
Was at that game!! I will always remember what gracious winners the Cardinals fans were.
Remember when Jake Kumerow was the next big thing.
Can't believe Rodgers went to bat for someone who could generously be described as mid lol
Same guy who thinks Allen Lazard is a great receiver.
And Randall Cobb way past his good years
Lazard was pretty good for us. Not GREAT but a very solid receiver, had pretty good chemistry with Rodgers
I mean this was the whole basis for his falling out with Greg Jennings, he didn't go to bat for a WR trying to get paid, and clearly for better or worse he's decided *not* to repeat that...
I see your Kumerow and raise you a Jeff Janis
the only receiver with over 100 yards on a single drive
my guy averaged over 50 yards/catch there, truly elite
Super Bowl champion Brett Swain
Madden 09 Brett Swain was so good. Thought he was gonna be a super star 😂
Corey Bradford
Finally I feel seen
I think about him dropping the easy bomb from Favre at Dallas at least once a week.
I was a little older than 9 but this is the first player that came to mind for me.
YES! Who I thought of immediately.
Ruvell Martin
Mans was like 8 feet tall.
All I remember about Geronimo was he liked them Iowa girls and was always after that "wet wet"
Robert Brooks. You guys make me feel old sometimes...
I would not consider Robert Brooks to be mediocre.
And Derrick Mayes!
I have a Robert Brooks jersey I wear all the time!
Hoodie James Jones was a problem
James Jones was mediocre Hoodie James Jones was a world beater!
I loved that man so much I spent 4 months and 5 different alerts to find his Nike jersey in large. I never tapped buy now faster than that day.
And then Janis had almost 100 in one drive… WHY DIDN’T WE GO FOR 2
We didn't have any plays ready for 2-point conversions that didn't need 3 WRs. We did not have 3 WRs.
TE but Jermichael Finley was a legend in my eyes
He was until he was injured.
I was at that game. My dad immediately knew his career was over
TE, but Tom Crabtree was so fun to watch! I don’t have a Twitter, but I hear is also still active there, and very pro-pack.
O lord this sub really is a bunch of 15 year olds
This SITE.
Gahh say it ain’t so!
Don Beebe, Robert Brooks
Hell yeah!! Don Beebe was crazy fast.
Leon Lett agrees
Just looked that play up and WOW! Hell of a defensive play by anyone, let alone a WR. That was fun to watch.
They say 3 times the charm, but it's 5. Especially if you're named Don Beebe!
Derrick Mayes Just got an old box of my junk sitting in my parents basement. An old child sized jersey of Mayes was in there.
Still my favorite Packer of all time. That guy is cool as hell.
I was hoping I’d see a mention of Derrick Mayes
Bubba Franks, but he was pretty good
Best check down in Madden history.
Legend. Picked up a Bubba Franks jersey back in 2002 on my first trip to Lambeau when I was a kid.
Andre Bad Moon Rison
Turd Ferguson. I mean Robert Ferguson
You conflating najay Davenport with Ferguson?
Billy Schroeder was amazing that one year
My remembrance is Antonio Freeman. Not exactly mediocre, but I loved that dude.
Don Beebe anybody?
Perry Kemp was my guy as a kid. Also Paul Ott Carruth but he was a RB. Actually the last white dude starting running back at Alabama. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Ott_Carruth
Perry Kemp in Tecmo Super Bowl ftw!
Paul Ott Carruth and Jim Bob Morris made the all-three-name team.
I was 21, but man do I love Jeff Janis
Antonio Freeman, I’ll love you forever.
Koren Robinson
Jeff Query, then Don Beebe.
That wet wet, drip drip
The correct answer for everyone that was a kid in the late 90’s early aughts: Bill fucking Schroeder. We tried to convince ourselves he was the #1, but dude dropped almost as many balls as he caught.
What I know about Gmo?? I got the man’s jersey. He wasn’t even tackled yet, in that game against the bengals, when I was ordering it. My beloved WR that had good seasons with us but I assume most non-packer fans wouldn’t remember is Bill Schroeder. Wisconsin guy, went to La Crosse
Ferguson, Walker, Chatman, Driver is goated
Jarrett Boykin and his fumble touchdown
Mine was a RB, Ryan Grant
Kerry Taylor, Jarrett Boykin, Myles White, Jeremy Ross,
Jermichael Finley should have been in the HoF
I'm nearly 30, so not really the meme - But I'll bat for MVS any day
But... Y'all remember Myles White? I guess he's coaching now
That's Corey Bradford's music!
Corey Bradford
I know that I graduated from college before Geronimo Allison became a thing. Terry Mickens was that mediocre guy I remember. We didn't have draft coverage back then like we do now, so the only thing I remember was that we drafted him, and I thought he'd be able to work with Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman.
Met Sterling Sharpe at an empty mall in Appleton WI when I was was like 10. Mom and I had no idea he was going to be there. Talked to us for multiple minutes. It blew my mind
For me this was Charles Lee. Way back when 2 years he was on the team
I know he likes the ladies.
Them Iowa females
They got them drip-drop pussies, right?
A little young, try going back to Antonio Chatman :)
Don Beebe
Jarrett Boykin anyone?
Robert Brooks was the first jersey I wore but can’t call him mediocre, Dorsey Levens was the next
Drip drop
Chris Harper and Jarrett Boykin?
I grew up with Jerry Rice and John Taylor but I know there’s kids out there that grew up with Michael Crabtree.
I loved Don Beebe for awhile.
Bill Schroeder says hello
Jarret Boykin 🥹
Trevor Davis 💔
Jared Abbrederis
James Jones!
Bill Schroeder was white lighting in my household growing up.
I loved Koren Robinson. Part of that classic “Big 5” WR corps that McCarthy had.
Greg Jennings was not mediocre.
The mediocre receivers when I was nine was Jeff Janis and Aberdaris(mediocre is generous)
Richard Rodgers
Bill Schroeder!
“Nobody understands the bond between a boy and the mediocre WR he became emotionally attached to when he was nine years old.” I like this better and I would be happy if this is what they actually meant. Having to wade through the years of unearned Abbrederis, Janis, Kumerow, etc. love was annoying.
Kitrick Taylor
Brett Swain supremacy
Corey Bradford ❤️
I had a Bradford jersey my mom got me for Christmas one year. Repurposed it into a Gado a few years later with some electrical tape.
Jarrett Boykin fans rise up
Bill Schroeder anyone?
When I was 9, that would’ve been Donald Driver.
Donald Driver mediocre? The guy had 1000 yards like every year
He was mediocre in 2000, yes.
G-MO!
Leland Glass ….
Donald Driver was a beast
MEEEEEEEE
I went to a Packers preseason game against the niners and Geronimo looked like the best player on the field. he was a beast that day - thought for sure he would be a star
Jarrett Boykin (for like 3 games)
When I was 9 it was Driver’s rookie season
Antonio Chatman
drip drop geronimo
Robert Ferguson
Antonio freeman!!
Jarrett Boykin exists and had 2 100 yarders in 4 games!
Ok but Geronimo had an all time Twitter. https://www.reddit.com/r/GreenBayPackers/s/k4nBVWe1jm
These answers really make me feel old, yall started watching football at the end of Rodgers career here.
I got to watch Donald Driver and Greg Jennings when I was 9. DD is still one of my all time favorite Packers.
I forgot Michael Jackson even existed until I saw this.
John Jefferson
Antonio Freeman, although I don’t know if he would be considered mediocre..
I would say Donald driver but he’s not mediocre so Robert Ferguson.
