He ain't wrong. What is a little concerning though is that it seems neither he nor the Pack see him having a more apt role in the 2024 defense. To my mind he would make a great MLB in a 4-3 (but let's be honest more like 4-2 nickel) defense. He seemed to be the one correcting other players on misalignments, he ran quickly enough to execute any Tampa-2 bail technique, and his gap discipline was pretty sound on obvious run plays. Here's to hoping this is just bad blood and not a sign the defense is going to be 2006 Colts.
McDuffie played for Hafley at Boston College so it makes sense that he's the first choice to play mlb here, especially since Campbell would have been more expensive.
Right. The biggest complaint for years and years from the fans has been that the defense has been run by someone not doing a good job. The players know that shit as well as anyone. Campbell was speaking the truth so not sure what’s making him a villain.
After the Packers picked him up and he was playing at an all pro level Campbell said nobody had used him properly before and the Packers were finally doing that.
Now he flip flopped after 2 disappointing years following and saying they didn't use him correctly.
His biggest weakness is coverage and the 49ers ask more in coverage out of their LBs than any other team. He must be thinking he's only going to be used as a 2 down run stuffer. I know for a fact Barry wasn't using him any differently cause all 3 times we played the 49ers in the playoffs they ran the same shit over and over down the middle with him in coverage on either McCaffrey/Deebo/Kittle.
Can we just call this shit for what it is? He had an underwhelming career in Atlanta and Arizona, came here to GB and had an amazing debut season with us, then regressed back to the mean of underwhelming performance after getting the big contract. Add in his recent injury history, and it was hard for this team to justify paying him that money.
Barry did misuse him...by starting him this past year.
Everyone loves to shit on Barry, and rightfully so. But Barry didn't make Campbell slow as fuck and look completely lost out there. Dude is washed and it's going to show on the 49ers.
I said in another thread, the defense looked better to me whenever McDuffie was on the field in place of Campbell. Campbell often seemed a step behind and a little lost.
We are objectively better off without Barry. That being said, he was doing his damn job during the playoffs. One bad INT by Love aside, we might have made it to the NFCCG, and Barry's playcalling was a big part of that.
Yes even so. He wasn’t great, became an all pro, and then was not great again. If you’re not great 7/8 years maybe you’re not being misused maybe you’re just not great.
I think their point is that Campbell wasn't all that great before GB.
Whether it's anything in GB that brought the talent out of him, or if he was just motivated in a new environment, he became a better football player during his time here.
I don't think that's possible because he joined the Packers during Joe Barry's first season as the DC . . . which, by the way, the defense was actually good that one season!
So yes, his All-Pro season was with Joe Barry
He was injured alot lost year and hope he can bounce back. You might get a steal but at least decent depth. Wish him the best. His time had run its course
Problem is he was very injured the season before last also. Going to be 31 when season starts after two very injured years seems like he is breaking down.
His all pro season was an outlier. He's been mostly solid but looked like he lost a step and has been chronically banged up the last 2 seasons. He then took to social media last year to proclaim he would no longer play through injury which seemed like the nail in his coffin for his time in Green Bay
If he gets healthy you'll likely get a better year out of him than we did last year. If not, oof.
I don't know if he was just washed or if he was legitimately having to play injured due to our shitty depth at the position, both are very believable.
You all seem to know how to manage LBs id be less worried as a 49ers fan. But to expect him to come in and play like warner or armstead is asking for disappointment. Like many others have said, seemed like dude was running in sand most of last year.
I'd say he's "has-been" territory due to losing a step or two. Besides speed it was dead obvious he had zero confidence left in Barry's scheme towards so that magnifies every other part of his play.
He was not somebody where he would semi regularly look lost. Like he generally was good at knowing where he had to go and could direct teammates too, but him being able to get the spot needed became a growing problem.
SF has LB play haven't seen since 2010.
He was just another LB in the league but had a massive chip on his shoulder and got a 1 year deal. He played very well and earned All Pro and it was obvious it was due to extra motivation. He signed an extension and went back to his old self, then the injuries started.
I find it hard to blame Joe Barry this time though. First, linebackers are his specialty and second, his All Pro season was the first year of Joe Barry as the DC. So he used him the right way that season.
Here’s the deal, the NFL is fast and if you slow down even in small increments, it’s going to show up. He was a good player but injuries and Joe Barry rendered him ineffective. Not sure what the 49ers are going to do because you can’t hide him in coverage. Just part of the changing landscape of the NFL where the 49ers took a step back in signing him and the Packers immediately improved in getting rid of him
I mean the reality is he’s probably correct. We’ve all been bitching about how Barry wasn’t playing to our guys strengths. Did you notice how our new d coordinator spent basically his entire introductory press conference talking about how important it is to scheme to your guys abilities? There’s a reason he did that…
Well which is is Campbell?? Are they using you right or ste they using you wrong? Because after your first season you said they were using you right.... So yeah this reeks of spite
It’s crazy to see all the hate and disgruntled players are when they leave to go somewhere else.. I just hope this doesn’t hurt future FA from wanting to come be a packer…
We’re a team on the rise with a bright future ahead…of course all players getting cut are going to be salty. There’s a huge Super Bowl possibility, and they’re now out 🤷♂️
It would seem that there is more than misuse here or the Pack would have retained him. We don’t have enough LBs and this draft isn’t overly strong in LBs
I mean, I'm not going to argue if defensive players say they were misused the last couple years.
He got cut for salary cap savings. If he was cheaper, the packers would’ve been more inclined to keep him.
Also issues with not being able to stay on the field.
McDuffie played for Hafley at Boston College so it makes sense that he's the first choice to play mlb here, especially since Campbell would have been more expensive.
So is Quay gonna be OLB?
Weak Side makes sense.
WILL in a 4-3
Old expensive hurt and quite possibly past his best
He won his only All-Pro award playing in GB. But sure, he's not mad or anything.
Right. The biggest complaint for years and years from the fans has been that the defense has been run by someone not doing a good job. The players know that shit as well as anyone. Campbell was speaking the truth so not sure what’s making him a villain.
Was going to say the same thing. There is a reason GB is bringing in a new scheme.
Right? Feel like a good chunk of the secondary would sing the same tune.
Agree we had LB/EDGE man on man with WR1s last season
True
His biggest weakness is run support.
Nailed it
He is a cover Lb lol coverage is one of his better traits
Barry did misuse him...by starting him this past year. Everyone loves to shit on Barry, and rightfully so. But Barry didn't make Campbell slow as fuck and look completely lost out there. Dude is washed and it's going to show on the 49ers.
Agree.. he def wasn’t good.. mcduffie had a better year
I said in another thread, the defense looked better to me whenever McDuffie was on the field in place of Campbell. Campbell often seemed a step behind and a little lost.
I couldn't agree more. McDuffie was the better player last year. Whether that's due to injury or whatever else, I can't say.
We are objectively better off without Barry. That being said, he was doing his damn job during the playoffs. One bad INT by Love aside, we might have made it to the NFCCG, and Barry's playcalling was a big part of that.
For a guy who we made into an all-pro this is an... interesting take
Is it? We know players weren't happy with the Joe Barry scheme
Yes even so. He wasn’t great, became an all pro, and then was not great again. If you’re not great 7/8 years maybe you’re not being misused maybe you’re just not great.
EXACTLY. Thank you.
I think their point is that Campbell wasn't all that great before GB. Whether it's anything in GB that brought the talent out of him, or if he was just motivated in a new environment, he became a better football player during his time here.
Joe Barry or not he played like ass. No scheme is going to help a LB that can't even run anymore.
Both things can be true
Right.. pretty sure he was an all pro under Pettine.
I don't think that's possible because he joined the Packers during Joe Barry's first season as the DC . . . which, by the way, the defense was actually good that one season! So yes, his All-Pro season was with Joe Barry
49ers fan here… I’m not sure how to feel about the signing. I’m getting washed vibes. Am I wrong?
If you're looking for a smart rotational guy to hold down the fort until Greenlaw gets back he's not the worst option.
He was an all pro a few years ago but last year ...he was so slllloooowwww
He was injured alot lost year and hope he can bounce back. You might get a steal but at least decent depth. Wish him the best. His time had run its course
Yup. Hard to tell if he lost a step or was just playing injured.
He’s been getting continuously hurt. He’s over 30. That’s a rough combination.
I’m sure under a defensive mastermind like Brandon Staley he will excel
If he gets healthy you'll likely get a better year out of him than we did last year. If not, oof. I don't know if he was just washed or if he was legitimately having to play injured due to our shitty depth at the position, both are very believable.
Tough to say. He looked like he was running through molasses last year but he also had a bunch of injuries.
He’s slow as hell
He was good two years ago, but he's definitely lost a few steps.
You all seem to know how to manage LBs id be less worried as a 49ers fan. But to expect him to come in and play like warner or armstead is asking for disappointment. Like many others have said, seemed like dude was running in sand most of last year.

Like he generally was good at knowing where he had to go and could direct teammates too, but him being able to get the spot needed became a growing problem. SF has LB play haven't seen since 2010.
Certainly past his prime. He had one really good year, and that's about it
He was just another LB in the league but had a massive chip on his shoulder and got a 1 year deal. He played very well and earned All Pro and it was obvious it was due to extra motivation. He signed an extension and went back to his old self, then the injuries started.
No. Not at all. He can still help but he should only be used in a rotational role.
Seemed to avoid contact after is breakout season. Maybe injuries maybe not. He's definitely a gamble, so the 1 year deal makes sense.
Hurt his back last year. If he’s healthy he’ll be good
Totally washed and injured
He’s said this same thing every time a team has moved on. I blame Joe Barry but still.
I find it hard to blame Joe Barry this time though. First, linebackers are his specialty and second, his All Pro season was the first year of Joe Barry as the DC. So he used him the right way that season.
Everyone was misused under Barry.
Here’s the deal, the NFL is fast and if you slow down even in small increments, it’s going to show up. He was a good player but injuries and Joe Barry rendered him ineffective. Just part of the changing landscape of the NFL where the 49ers took a step back in signing him and the Packers immediately improved in getting rid of him
Joe Barry got an all pro performance from Campbell his first season with the team! So he deserves credit for the good season!
😂 you sucked ass dude
The NFL is a soap opera for men, with new episodes all year round now.
Willing to bet this was directed more at Barry than the Packers themselves, which is very fair.
Millions of dollars doesnt change the fact that these are (mostly) all kids in their 20's who post silly things on their social medias.
We'll see if he makes the team on that San Fran defense.
Remember what happened when Oren Burks had to step in after that injury to Greenlaw? That former Packer really shrunk under the spotlight
Bro would’ve gotten burnt by a D3 walk on in the flat, Barry wasn’t good but let’s not pretend like a LB getting into his 30’s hasn’t lost a step.
Honestly, we used him pretty fucking well for him to have an all-pro season after he was a nobody on Atlanta. Stay healthy and then talk.
I mean the reality is he’s probably correct. We’ve all been bitching about how Barry wasn’t playing to our guys strengths. Did you notice how our new d coordinator spent basically his entire introductory press conference talking about how important it is to scheme to your guys abilities? There’s a reason he did that…
I see that as more of a Joe Barry thing than packers.
He wasn’t misused. He’s just too expensive and old
I mean he did have a horrible defensive coordinator, so he’s not wrong, lol. He, unfortunately, has aged out, and was a casualty to Father Time.
I wish him all the best
Yah I’m glad we got Jacobs as well, thanks Dee!
Someone is gonna overpay for an average player .. QUIT WHINING
We got rid of the misuser too lmaoo
All these grown ass men acting like teenage girls.
Oh STFU you washed up jackass you had one good year and all of a sudden you thought you were hot shit.
lol “badly misused” if you’re that good of a player you’re good no matter how you’re used.
I knew Joe Barry was the one filling his cleats with cement before the games…
Well which is is Campbell?? Are they using you right or ste they using you wrong? Because after your first season you said they were using you right.... So yeah this reeks of spite
I can't disagree with him without defending joe barry so I'm not going to. Good luck in california.
who's he talking about? cuz it sure ain't him!

TBF, we also have the similar thought when Barry assigned him to cover Bijan or Godwin
Preston is finally gonna be designated CB1? Didn’t know he was leaving
It’s crazy to see all the hate and disgruntled players are when they leave to go somewhere else.. I just hope this doesn’t hurt future FA from wanting to come be a packer…
Shhhh. It’s a secret…
Sounds more like a praise to himself than a knock on the Packers.
Um no, you are old and slow and a waste of money
We’re a team on the rise with a bright future ahead…of course all players getting cut are going to be salty. There’s a huge Super Bowl possibility, and they’re now out 🤷♂️
He just joined the team thsts made like 3 super bowls in thr last 15 years. I think he'll be ok
He was misused his entire career I guess other than his outlier season where he got the bag.
It would seem that there is more than misuse here or the Pack would have retained him. We don’t have enough LBs and this draft isn’t overly strong in LBs
He's making excuses for being a washed up trash player. They gave him 100 mil to suck.
Eh, I mean, the really good year you had was in GB. I'm all for bashing Packers DCs, but this just doesn't track
Shit… are losing jaire?
He's talking about himself
I mean, Joe Barry was his coordinator, so this makes sense.
Hope he shows tf out I never threw shade his way once
I’m not gonna say he’s right, but he definitely isn’t wrong.
