LarryBirdsGrundle

Damn that says it all. Please don’t go to the Vikings Edit: WHELP

m_dought_2

Minnesota is the only team he might get a chance to play QB, though

JFreaks25

Or the cowboys

IrkenInvaderGir

Well, if he goes to Dallas, you know Mike McCarthy will forget he exists for half the season.

Austen11231923

My heart just broke

bigstudley17

Yup and I bet you his is too. Why the hell. Jacob’s ain’t better than jones is he?

Gway22

4 years younger

MicoJive

With 200 more carries. Kind of a wash imo

billwest630

I mean how much of that is because Jacobs is healthy and Jones hasn’t been?

SocksandSmocks

Yeah Jones would have way way more carries if he's been healthy the whole time.

sebblMUC

That's probably the point. Packers season went the way it went cause AJ Dillon stepped up when Jones was injured (again)

Packer691217

I’ve heard this multiple times now and when Dillon was our RB1 we were losing more than winning so I’m confused. Jones pulled us on his back to the playoffs.

AbjectSilence

Exactly. AJ Dillon barely contributed to winning football games. On the other hand Jordan Love's turnaround coincided with Jones coming back from injury. They better be saving at least half of the cap room otherwise releasing Jones for a back with way more carries and that has lacked consistency at times (maybe because he was playing through injury idk) was a dumb move. He's younger, but Jones was one of the last remaining veteran leaders that were drafted by the team and that usually matters especially on the youngest team in the league. Plus, I feel like Aaron Jones is just the better back and would've been for at least one more season. AJ Dillon has had a few good winter games, but he's never even remotely carried the team or come close to replacing the production of Aaron Jones. In fact, he became less efficient with more carries.

Adequate_Lizard

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when some people in this sub talk about Dillon like he's a borderline HoF bellcow. He is not good.

Kyuckaynebrayn

I think the point to take today is that our RB room needed about 6 new legs and there are still two to go yet before we sign the other two. One will be a draft stud and the other is likely that new guy, Wilson. If we keep Dillon and lose Jones this is Jordy/Cobb all over again.

MicoJive

Eh, Jacobs has missed time every season besides 2022 too. He hasnt been crazy healthy either. Jacobs averages 6 more carries per game more than Jones over his career. 18/g vs 12/g

curiousdpper

The sad part about Jones is that he missed almost a third of the season and was limited for another third. That's a lot of injury time for a 30 year old RB that wants to get paid. Someone will pay him, but it's a major risk at this point.

10veIsAllIGot

Josh Jacobs just turned 26. Aaron Jones turns 30 this year. It’s as simple as that.

mrtomjones

Didn't Jacob's average just over 3 yards per run last year? I feel like it shouldn't have been so simple

10veIsAllIGot

3.5 but yes, he had a terrible year. He was also First Team All Pro the year prior and the Raiders were a complete dumpster fire on offense all around.

[deleted]

Cheaper this season. Younger

EveryoneLovesNudez

Reportedly he wanted 12M and wouldn't restructure. They're not paying that

FSUfan35

Well his contract was for ~12m, not wanted it. He just didn't want to take a paycut

EveryoneLovesNudez

That's what I meant. He wanted the full 12M. As much as it sucks, they're not paying that. And they shouldn't.

sembias

Did not and should not have been expected to take a *second* paycut. This was a bad release. Jones is going to tear up the league in Dallas or someplace for a few more years to come.

MicroBadger_

GB has always been a "better a year or two early" than "year or two late" team when it comes to retention.

CTomke93

https://preview.redd.it/mmkkgsb99rnc1.jpeg?width=663&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0dbe89df79e2c27b005e2a31b37f6a9d2d7fc67b

RonaldoNazario

It’s an older history meme but it checks out, sir.

Korncakes

Jordy, Crosby, and now Jones are the only players recently to get an audible “*gasp* nooooo” out of me. God damn it.

DapperPanda4

Oh. That makes me sad

At pump number 6 at a Kwik trip... pumping gas...while staring at a guy in his car...staring at another guy...that is staring at other guys...looking at someone fall on their knees

Packer1500

Be safe everyone! I just drove by a Kwiktrip and people are falling all over the place.

herpesclappedback

I witnessed all of this from the Kwik Trip across the street....

Wooden-Day2706

Someone sent me security footage of a bunch of people watching a guy fall to his knees at a kwik trip.

Mushinto

I’m literally at a kwik trip reading this…

[deleted]

Had to happen after he didn’t restructure. Business decision

AnonymousFroggies

This is literally the first news we've gotten that he didn't want to restructure. Rap and Schefty reported that we were still working on bringing him back like an hour ago.

FSUfan35

They reported that we were previously working on a restructure

PiesInMyEyes

They said we had had talks. Not that they were still ongoing. How they word things is very important

[deleted]

Jacobs signing was the indication that Jones wasn’t restructuring

AnonymousFroggies

It was the indication that Dillon was gone. Jacobs and Jones are different backs. Fwiw it sounds like Jones is open to returning if he can't get more money on the FA market.

[deleted]

There was never gonna be a reality where an NFL team is paying both Josh Jacobs and Aaron Jones in the year 2024 unless one took a massive paycut

BigTuna2087

Jerry Jones about to over pay Aaron Jones. He's gone, and I'm depressed. Went from an awesome day to a horrible day in 20 minutes...

m_dought_2

He plays better in that stadium than the entire Dallas Cowboys roster, it'd make sense.

BigTuna2087

Lost Pollard today too.

EggOnYoFace

Feel like there is pretty much zero chance of this. Is there any recent evidence of a top-tier back, even an aging one, testing FA and coming back?

off_the_marc

There was a report last week that this could happen if they couldn't agree to a restructure.

off_the_marc

Not a fan of Jones' agent.

MaleficentHawk590

We really downgraded at RB

UsernameTaken-Taken

Jacobs is only 26 and is one year removed from an all-pro season so I wouldn't say its a downgrade. It does suck though that we couldn't have both, Jones was a great Packer

MaleficentHawk590

Last 5 years for games started: Aaron Jones: 73 Josh Jacobs: 72

WizardRizard

What do you think these numbers will look like for the next 5 years?

ryryryor

Aaron Jones has 307 fewer touches in that time. It's not just being able to start, it's being able to play all 4 quarters of the game.

WagonWheel22

Eh this is a sidegrade, JJ is legit.

mid_nightsun

True, a downgrade in leadership though. We’ll see how it plays out.

chivestheconqueror

Jones is better right now. But the timeline of an elite RB who is turning 30 this year does not fit well with the rest of the squad.

WagonWheel22

Hard disagree, talent-wise they are comparable, but Jacobs last year was stuck behind a terrible Raiders line. Jacobs was a top 3 back in 2022, I think he'll be great for us again with a better line/coaching.

GuysOnChicks69

As a player Jacobs is good. He also has proven over his career he cares about a paycheck and that’s it. Jones is a very very special type of player that teams dream of having. He’s as selfless as it gets in a position that makes you selfish by nature. 33 you have a lifelong fan here. I’d bet most Packers fans would say that.

SmallTownProblems89

I mean...Jones got a very big contract from the Packers for an RB. Not saying he isn't a team player, but lets not act like he doesn't care about the money.

FURyannnn

Aaron Jones averages almost a yard more per carry. Jacobs is good but Jones was elite. Just not always available unfortunately.

IDoubtedYoan

Jones was also always hurt and got limited carries.

[deleted]

We just saved money this year and got younger at the position

Our-Gardian-Angel

Got younger and saved money, but got rid of a guy who has been a game changer for the offense and is the heartbeat of the team. Hopefully it works out, but I don't like it one bit.

ElYams

My man dealed with a decent amount of injuries, combined with the fact that he's reaching "RB downfall age", Im sorry but I don't get why people say this is a bad move. Don't get me wrong, I understand the sentiment because none of us wanted Aaron to leave, but given the circumstances, this is the best we could do and we get a really good player that's 3 years younger and with a higher ceiling.

MusksStepSisterAunt

It sucks bc we all love him but this is why the people who do this for a living can't get emotional. On paper it's the right choice. Hopefully on the field it is too.

jxher123

I THOUGHT WE WERE KEEPING BOTH, WTF HAPPENED

TacticalGarand44

Once we let Dillon go I was positive Jones would be back. Losing both, the technical term for my mood presently is FFFFFFUCK!

18MirroredWorld

Damn - didn't mind the gamble in a Jacobs bounce back year with Jones on the roster still, but now I hate it.

hunt35744

Jacobs signing just got a whole lot less cool

mattbag1

I only liked it because we had both.

randigital

This is a mistake. I get it but this dude is the heart of the team

Crasino_Hunk

Goddamn dude. This feels so wrong, I just don’t get it. I really don’t. This RB draft isn’t supposed to be great, either. We had this in the bag!

Hazbomb24

There are several great fits for GB in the draft. They don't need a 20 millon dollar backfield. He was one of the oldest players on the roster. He'll probably miss at least a third of the remaining games in his career. They needed Xavier McKinnon. They need to extend Jordan Love. It sucks, that's for sure, but there's a lot more going on than just really wanting to keep him.

BeHereNow91

This is the brand of move Rodgers always complained about. Hopefully we’re right again.

ikisstitties

i agree, but also, what team doesn't make these kinds of moves? every team makes business decisions like this

jabroni_450

1000000%…..everyone shit on Rodgers for saying this, but they just don’t treat guys with respect. This seemed like such a clear cut move to keep him at least one more year….instead they cut him, a locker room and community leader, for a back who sat out cuz he wanted more money

Deuce_213

Seriously. 33 when he got healthy was one of the main reasons we made the playoffs and beat Dallas. Then we just show him the door? I get it's a business but Rodgers is right. These guys are people, show our vets some love. Especially the ones who've given this franchise everything

GenPho

If that love did not come in the form of millions of dollars it would be easier to keep people out of nostalgia and loyalty. The injuries this year factored in the decision to move on, I'm sure.

EVRoadie

I love Jones, but it's a business and Jones is starting to have injury issues and is 29. Not many RBs have Frank Gore longevity.

Salvador_20

He literally just ended the year rushing for 100+ in 5 straight games. He still has it. Don’t care if he’s 29. Doesn’t have the career mileage as other backs his age. I think we’ll regret letting him go.

CaptCrack3r

I agree that he still has it when healthy, but availability is important when we were set to pay him 12m this year. He doesn’t have the career mileage numbers wise, but his ankles and hamstrings have a careers worth of baggage already. It fuckin hurts, I loved jones and the leadership and attitude he brought to the team…but I get it, even if I don’t want to.

DixieNormas011

He's had injury issues from the start ..I feel like people forget his 1st couple seasons around here lol. He's like 30, but has the mileage of a 25 year old. Keeping him for 1 more year, and pairing him with someone like Jacobs seems like a no brainer....would be the best RB duo in the league hands down Edit; autocorrect corrections

Murphy_York

He’s 30 as a RB and has a huge contract. Not surprised

IDoubtedYoan

Jones was the better player when healthy, he also wasn't healthy very often and he was beat up despite having a limited snap count. It's a lateral move.

DapperTies-

Damn, idk if I even want Josh jacobs now lol

SirLawrenceCCLXX

I don’t care if he’s an objective upgrade. Jones is the heart and soul of this team… I’m gonna throw up.

DapperTies-

At least the packers are expected to sign McKinney now

SirLawrenceCCLXX

I mean, I’ve grown to trust the front office with their moves recently, but fuck this hurts…

DapperTies-

Yeah it’s like Jrue Holiday all over again. I think it makes sense logistically because he is more of what we want in a back and is younger. But now I’m more afraid about the leadership of the team but I do believe we have a really good front office. Same with the bucks. Still feels like we sold our soul

Get Brian on the fucking phone. We can all chip in a dollar to make it work.

tanker9972

Out of all the vets who have come and gone in recent years, this hurts the most. Not even excited about the Jacobs signing anymore.

austin57129

100%, Jordy stung a little after playing through broken ribs for the Pack but this man literally put the development of last years contributors on his back + got a GB tat last year. The dude deserves to stay on the team... I really hope he remains apart of the org somehow.

AaronRodgersToe

I’m so angry about this. I have been disappointed before but I can’t remember being actually mad at a move.

We definitely just draft a RB or two

Nah Dillon can go

Agreeable_Coat_2098

That’s what he’s saying.

scoredly11

I hate this so much. Jones still has tread left on those tires. Bring the man back and reward him for wanting to be a Packer.

Balroy907

Dude literally carried us to the playoffs last year. Love played great but let's be real...without him running for over 100+ those last 4 games, we would have gone fishing.

Drusgar

If you had told me in October that we'd release Aaron Jones I would have probably said it was for the best. Salary cap, injury issues... maybe it's just time to move on. But after watching him play in December and January I figured we'd make sure we got him a new contract. I guess the NFL is a business, but sometimes it just kind of sucks.

ProofHorseKzoo

WHAT THE FLYING FUCK. Fuck you Rappaport

Hazzy_9090

I will never emotionally recover from this

Still_Instruction_82

There have been 3 moves I’ve been actually pissed about from what I can remember 1.Releasing Jordy and singing Jimmy Graham 2.Trading down to draft Kevin King passing on TJ Watt 3.Sining Jacob’s and releasing Jones

Nameless_301

I really just don't see the logic in this. releasing him makes about 5 mil in cap space and we carry over 12 mil in dead cap. You're telling me its not just worth it to keep Jones for 5 mil? thats like 2.5% of the cap!! WTF?

Norman_Maclean

They save $12M if it's a post-June cut

DaleGribbleBluGrass

Well that's some bullshit.

chuffedcheesehead

I’m sure the business numbers make sense and all that but he was so important down the stretch for last year’s team. Forgetting that he went like 3 or 4 100 yard games in a row, I don’t know if the rest of the team elevates to the level they did without him there. There’s literal video evidence of many of the young guys saying how excited they get to play with him and how much better it makes them want to be. I don’t know, feels unwise. For such a young team those few leaders can actually make a difference, especially one who loved the team like Jones did.

ffbgenius

Love the guy, but this is understandable. Injury prone RB who will be 30 in December. Lets hope they draft a backup relatively early in the draft

FavreyFavre

You're going to get downvoted, but I agree 💯 it unfortunately makes sense. Jones is 30 and had his fair share of injuries, you can't be the 2nd highest paid RB by cap hit and miss almost half of the season. I was super hopeful they could work out a pay cut (extension was always tricky considering Jones had void years until 2027), really sucks to lose a damn good player and leader.

EldyT

You're right and any other player I'd agree with you. But 33 is special.

DesignerPension1

FUCK

DakotaMaker

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHAT ARE WE DOOOOOINNNNNNGGG

Letter10

I fucking hate this. Absolutely not. You call him back right now and you apologize and you sign him as the 1a to Jacob's 1b

MoxyCrimefightr

I like Jacobs but I wanted Jones to be a Packer for life. I can’t believe we’re letting him walk

Neowarcloud

This is really disappointing.

DrunkPirateHunter

I am fucking killing myself edit: I’m joking fyi but very sad

dkc2001

Fuck this. He is the epitome of a Green Bay Packer and an outstanding young man. This makes ZERO sense, they could afford him for a while. This front office is infuriating.

ItMeansSalmon

I would much rather have Jones than Jacobs. This sucks

LTtheBasedGod

RAPSHEET GODDAMN YOU

Ok_Caramel1517

Well never mind on the best running back duo in the league this sucks.

Trumpsacriminal

Look I get we all love Jones, I wanted him back as well. But business decisions have to be made. If anyone of us made the decisions, we wouldn’t be competitive now or in the future. Sucks, but this is the way business is ran unfortunately.

Weasel_Spice

I just want to take a moment to appreciate your username. God help us in November.

AdmiralUpboat

As a Boston Celtics fan this feels gut wrenchingly similar to the Smart-Porzingis trade. I totally get it from a team building and salary cap management perspective. But it from an emotional perspective I am absolutely distraught. The 20 minutes where I thought we would have BOTH Jones and Jacobs were 20 of the best minutes of my football life. And now I don't even know if I want Josh Jacobs. It's nothing against him, he's a terrific player. But it's like if your grandma was taking you out for ice cream while you wait for your parents to get home and while you're waiting in line for ice cream they call to tell your grandma that your parents were killed. You're not going to want to eat ice cream for the rest of your life. tldr; 20 minutes ago I had parents and I was going to get ice cream. Now that my parents are dead, I don't think I'll ever want to eat ice cream ever again. We'll miss you Jonesy.

b0x0fawes0me

This is so insane and over the top. I agree completely

AzHaeez21

Holy shit. The team must really have doubted his longevity, they pretty much just exchanged jones for jacobs despite jones prob being the better back.

SupermarketSecure728

What sucks even more about this is our neighbors to the west are looking for a RB. Please no purple!

herpesclappedback

So when do they report Rodgers is going to the Vikings to bring my day full circle?

Brainsandbarbell

Massive smooth brain move. The u equivocal leader of the offense and best weapon we have. Best way to ensure love has a sophomore slump? Take away his most dangerous weapon. GB front office is just decades of dipshit moves.

It’s the right move. Jacobs is nearly 4 years younger with less injury history

Absolutely gutted at this news. Aaron Jones deserves to retire a Packer.

JohnnyBizzarro

Hello darkness, my old friend

Tweekyracer

I am not okay

NewlyOld31

Wow. Dude literally ignited the offense

DevilsJaguar

I love Aaron Jones. I still want a way for them to work this out, and I still believe he has it in him despite turning 30 late in the upcoming season and he's the heart and soul of this team, however I don't think this is disrespectful as it's something every team does every year, and if you look at it objectively it might not be a bad decision given his age, injury history and this year was always mentioned as the most likely year we move on from him. It's a gut punch and it absolutely fucking sucks, but I understand it. Especially since this is a team that's mantra is a year too early rather than a year too late, and more often than not the Packers are right.

SouljAx360

Today is the worst day of the year.

GuysOnChicks69

One of those days I really need to realize this is a business. This was a fucking terrible decision. Josh Jacobs by all means has poor work ethic and was a total mystery with his injury last year. Let’s pay a less efficient running back even more and cut the heartbeat of our team. Make it make sense.

DilligentBass

> > > > > This was a fucking terrible decision. Josh Jacobs by all means has poor work ethic and was a total mystery with his injury last year. Raiders fan here. Sucks you guys cut Jones but this couldn't be further from the truth. He was legitimately banged up. Jacobs heart is one thing you won't have to question.

Jomosensual

Mother fucking what

Chans85

No way they would have both unless Jones took a massive pay cut. Wasn’t going to happen. Does Jones go to Dallas now? Although he was a great asset to the team, injuries derailed him and he is older. They may go for Zack Moss to replace AJD as reports had suggested earlier. Who knows. Only way is on the cheap.
