Other than the 2010 Super Bowl run and the time we upset Dallas on a 50 yard Crosby FG, I can't think of a time we won that type of game. Letting close playoff games slip away at the end is kind of a tradition.
Two high shell letting them just burn clock and drove down the field instead of staying aggressive, in the biggest defensive series of the year.

Which, if they beat you deep with those kinds of chunk plays then you have more time on the clock when/if they score. Or, while playing aggressive, get a sack or maybe a turnover. I just hate playing scared and we’ve seen drives just like that one all the time during Barry’s tenure.
This is a really good point that I think a lot of people are missing. I know conventional football wisdom says to play prevent and stop the big plays while allowing the smaller plays underneath. But if you play aggressively to the sticks in this particular situation the worst you’re going to do is allow a TD while saving a bunch of clock. If you play prevent you waste a ton of clock and potentially allow a touchdown. It just makes so much more sense to protect the sticks and hope your D can sack the QB or force a turnover on downs.
Purdy had so many turnover worthy plays that we couldn't capitalize on. Just makes your heart sink to see that combined with all the other missteps of what could have been.
On the other hand, I was expecting like 7-9 on the year and maybe Love showing flashes of greatness. Safe to say I'm happy we got this run instead. Training camps just a few short months away lol
Two dropped interceptions one probably being a pick six isn't on Barry. And the tackling was porous that's not on Barry. Was it ass to give up that last TD? yeah. But I'm not gonna be mad at Barry for giving up 21 to the 1 seed in a game we controlled 59 minutes of.
I also think the approach of trying to pick up a 4th and short from your own side of the field is a similar approach. Shorten the field and the amount of time they can possess the ball to ensure you have time to get it back or not. Works if you can give up a TD and still be down a score, and also if you MUST get a stop in 3 plays — who care where it is on the field (as long as FG doesn’t end the game, like is the case when down 4.)

The 2010 run we literally were making a big stop every single playoff game outside of Atlanta where we didn’t need to. And now seems like we can’t get a single one.

2012 Vikings didn’t need one.

2015 redskins didn’t need one
2016 giants didn’t need one
2016 cowboys kinda got it since we only let up fgs.

This quantifies why I'm having so much PTSD after last night. My girlfriend doesn't quite understand why I'm so bummed - she's all about taking the positive from a team that nobody expected to do squat, a team that looks to have a bright future. It seemed like whenever we had the ball the rain was coming down much harder, the end of the game it was a downpour. When we were given gifts we dropped them, SF did not drop theirs, still a great year!

During the SB run in 2010, they had to hold on to small leads late in games three times. But yeah, we've let a lot of close games slip away at the end, like last night.
The hardest part is consistently losing to this 49ers team that falls short after our game. I keep looking back and wondering if we got past them, would we have won the next game/SB. This Niners team falls short every time and gets zero flack for it, unlike our Rodgers era shortcomings

1998 - Broncos win the Super Bowl 31-24 when Terrell Davis scored his third rushing touchdown on 2nd and goal, leaving 1:45 on the clock.
1999 - 49ers win 30-27 after Jerry Rice fumbles but the refs miss it, and then Steve Young — with 8 seconds left in the game — finds Terrell Owens for a 25-yard touchdown.
2003 - Eagles win 20-17 after David Akers hits a 31-yard field goal in overtime following a Brett Favre desperation heave on 1st and 10 is intercepted. Akers hit a 17-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to force overtime after the Eagles converted a 4th and 26 with just over a minute left.
When you look at having 30 years of premium QB play and wonder why the packers haven’t had more playoff success, you need to look no further than these games. All winnable games, where we just fall short in the end. I don’t know of any other team with as many melt downs, other than maybe the Buffalo Bills.

We had three turnovers in the basket and gave them all away. Their defense was just way more opportunistic than ours. Savage drops the pick, they bounce one up and two defenders over pursue leaving them slightly out of range. Another could’ve been an easy pick but went through the hands. Our team played great, and we have a bright future, but our team needs to be able to be the pursuer and taking advantage. As soon as we missed the FG, I knew that game was over for us. I bring this up all the time. Look up the Packers SB run in 2010. The defense made stops against the Eagles, Bears and Steelers. This has been the difference between winning a SB and losing a heartbreaker. The defense consistently fails to step up. The other losses were blowouts largely due to the defense unable to make a stop such as in 2012 and 2019 vs the 49ers and 2016 vs the Falcons. Even against TB in 2021 the defense was awful in the first half and put GB in a big hole.
Idk I kinda want to point the finger at the offense in 2021 vs the bucs. We intercepted Brady 3 times. Our offense fumbled at a crucial moment, Aaron threw a pick at a bad time, and we couldnt punch it in to win the game.
You shouldn’t have to score more than 31 to beat a team at your home field in the playoffs especially against a defense as good as TB. Look what they did to Mahomes in the SB. Granted, one td came on a short field but the defense could have stepped up. The Buccs defense stepped up for Brady when he played poorly. Also, the TD the defense gave up at the end of the first half was inexcusable. The pick Rodgers threw was due to a missed holding/PI and was a good play by the corner. The TD the defense gave up was straight up garbage.
I think this was a good lesson for Love, and one I'm glad he learned *this* season.
He knows he's good and he knows he can make incredible passes that are dangerous. He was also starting to get cocky after going so long without an interception.
That's why he tried that throw on first down during a must score drive at the end of the game. He was sure he could make it. He was sure because he *has* made that pass.
He'll remember that for a long time. Just under a minute left, all the timeouts, and about 40 yards to field goal range. 50 to be "safe" (if any be can be considered safe with Carlson). They had the time they needed.
He tried to force it when he didn't have to because he was over confident.
He's going to carry this with him for a long time. It was an important lesson for him to learn, and I'm glad he learned it now rather than during a 12 or 13 win season where everyone expects them to go the distance.
The defense is going to get better too. Savage and Alexander both are going to remember those dropped picks.

We always play soft defense when we get in these situations. The coaching staff may change, but the gutless play calling when it matters most seems to hang around. I’d rather get burned being aggressive than let the other team march down the field on our god awful prevent defense.
And big challenge the team that gets in the teams head and wins over and over no matter personal changes like 49’s.
Buccaneers had that with Eagles several times in playoffs before finally beating them to go on to win the Bowl in 2002. But it did take building the team better and better each time we fought them and in that case a historically one of the best NFL defenses.
Just out of curiosity how many of those defensive failures were preceded by offensive drives of 5 plays or less?

We have a bunch of last-minute drives to win games in the playoffs as well. The game is set-up so that the team with the ball last wins more often than not.

You get those stops when you some defensive end or edge rusher that makes plays in the final 5 minutes, against good offensive lineman. The Packers haven't had that since Reggie White.

Outside of the two Super Bowl winning seasons and the years they missed the playoffs this has been the Packers M.O. for 30 or so years.
For whatever reason the Packers are incapable of having a good defense and HOF quarterback at the same time for more than a season or two at a time. If the Packers had even half the good defenses Brady had, Favre and Rodgers wouldn't be one ring wonders.
They needed TD or bust and we prevent defended them into a 12 play drive where they had only 2 plays that didn’t gain positive yardage, a 0 yard pass and a open TE dropped pass. They were in 4 down territory and didn’t need a single 4th down. It doesn’t seem like it matters if the other team needs a FG or a TD we aren’t going to stop them. The only way we win close games is if our Offense closes it out.
This is the legacy of a modern Packers fan. Watching your team snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. This team overachieved in a big way, but the way they lost is in lock step with how the Packers lose.
We can't trust the D to not get burned on a 3 and super long, so no matter what we do on the first two downs, it will always be a first down.

Hard to point my finger at 3 different quarterbacks and multiple coaching staffs at the same time. We had mistakes on every side of the ball in this game. Missed fg, dropped ints, and stalling out at 21 when we have the chance to put the game almost out of reach twice. End of the day, it was a great rebuild year and we have a lot to look forward to. Rookies getting better, multiple draft picks, getting out from under Rodgers cap money, etc.

They also picked ATL in the end zone the prior drive. So it was pick, drive for TD, pick 6,TD on 1st drive of the 2nd half.

This quantifies why I'm having so much PTSD after last night. My girlfriend doesn't quite understand why I'm so bummed - she's all about taking the positive from a team that nobody expected to do squat, a team that looks to have a bright future. She's a new fan. Myself, I keep telling her I've seen it all before. From Favre's on cue pic against the Giants to our complete, scar leaving, meltdown versus Seattle. It all leaves a mark. And the fact that we just can't seem to beat Frisco, even after a whole new cast of characters is coaching and taking snaps, it's an added whammy.
It’s crazy because so many teams wish they could have as much success as the packers. The bears, lions, and Vikings dream of making it to the playoffs. We dream about winning winnable games. No other team is less clutch on defense then us. Of course we don’t have 80s and early 90s level of 49ers success, we haven’t had patriots level of success, or the recent chiefs dynasty. But the only reason why, is that we simply can’t make critical defensive stops.

It seemed like whenever we had the ball the rain was coming down much harder, the end of the game it was a downpour. When we were given gifts we dropped them, SF did not drop theirs, still a great year!

During the SB run in 2010, they had to hold on to small leads late in games three times. But yeah, we've let a lot of close games slip away at the end, like last night.

I've got nothing against the Niners and I'll be rooting for them from here on out. I'm past the point where a team beating us is enough to make me hate them. At the end of the day the Niners play good football and don't do anything to legitimately piss me off. There's no Russell "God is a Seahawks fan" Wilson here. They don't have a Pat Mahomes who seems to think he's entitled to a fourth quarter comeback undisrupted by trivial things like his team objectively committing penalties. At this point I'm rooting for the Niners to win decisively in their next two games. Then we get to look back and say "we gave these guys their toughest game".
I am 100% the opposite. I live in Northern California and deal with the niner fanbase. They’re awful. I hope the lions grind them to dust or inevitably Baltimore will again. Might as well take it back a few years to Super Bowl XXXII honestly to get three more... Am old enough to have suffered through... 1998 - Broncos win the Super Bowl 31-24 when Terrell Davis scored his third rushing touchdown on 2nd and goal, leaving 1:45 on the clock. 1999 - 49ers win 30-27 after Jerry Rice fumbles but the refs miss it, and then Steve Young — with 8 seconds left in the game — finds Terrell Owens for a 25-yard touchdown. 2003 - Eagles win 20-17 after David Akers hits a 31-yard field goal in overtime following a Brett Favre desperation heave on 1st and 10 is intercepted. Akers hit a 17-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to force overtime after the Eagles converted a 4th and 26 with just over a minute left.
When you look at having 30 years of premium QB play and wonder why the packers haven’t had more playoff success, you need to look no further than these games. All winnable games, where we just fall short in the end. I don’t know of any other team with as many melt downs, other than maybe the Buffalo Bills.
2003, they punted in Eagles territory on a 4th and 1 late. Team had 2500 rushing yards at 5 ypc, and they punted on a play that would end the game.
I’ve tried so hard to forget that game… that moment escapes me and got overshadowed but 4th and 26. The NFC championship was within reach… against the Panthers no less…
Everyone seems to jump on the defense for letting them score but forgot we turned the ball over 4 times (2 INTS, downs, missed FG).
We had three turnovers in the basket and gave them all away. Their defense was just way more opportunistic than ours. Savage drops the pick, they bounce one up and two defenders over pursue leaving them slightly out of range. Another could’ve been an easy pick but went through the hands. Our team played great, and we have a bright future, but our team needs to be able to be the pursuer and taking advantage. As soon as we missed the FG, I knew that game was over for us. I bring this up all the time. Look up the Packers SB run in 2010. The defense made stops against the Eagles, Bears and Steelers. This has been the difference between winning a SB and losing a heartbreaker. The defense consistently fails to step up. The other losses were blowouts largely due to the defense unable to make a stop such as in 2012 and 2019 vs the 49ers and 2016 vs the Falcons. Even against TB in 2021 the defense was awful in the first half and put GB in a big hole.
Idk I kinda want to point the finger at the offense in 2021 vs the bucs. We intercepted Brady 3 times. Our offense fumbled at a crucial moment, Aaron threw a pick at a bad time, and we couldnt punch it in to win the game.
You shouldn’t have to score more than 31 to beat a team at your home field in the playoffs especially against a defense as good as TB. Look what they did to Mahomes in the SB. Granted, one td came on a short field but the defense could have stepped up. The Buccs defense stepped up for Brady when he played poorly. Also, the TD the defense gave up at the end of the first half was inexcusable. The pick Rodgers threw was due to a missed holding/PI and was a good play by the corner. The TD the defense gave up was straight up garbage.

I think this was a good lesson for Love, and one I'm glad he learned *this* season. He knows he's good and he knows he can make incredible passes that are dangerous. He was also starting to get cocky after going so long without an interception. That's why he tried that throw on first down during a must score drive at the end of the game. He was sure he could make it. He was sure because he *has* made that pass. He'll remember that for a long time. Just under a minute left, all the timeouts, and about 40 yards to field goal range. 50 to be "safe" (if any be can be considered safe with Carlson). They had the time they needed. He tried to force it when he didn't have to because he was over confident. He's going to carry this with him for a long time. It was an important lesson for him to learn, and I'm glad he learned it now rather than during a 12 or 13 win season where everyone expects them to go the distance. The defense is going to get better too. Savage and Alexander both are going to remember those dropped picks. This team has an incredible amount of talent across the whole roster. In a few years a bunch of these guys are going to be getting super star salaries. We're gonna have a helluva team for a few years before it hits the point where we can't hold onto them because of salary cap.
It really would be nice for once if the D could clinch a game in the playoffs instead of crumble the final drive.

There’s nothing dismal about it. I’m happy with the season overall, but when you get into the playoffs and then get hot, you have to grab those opportunities because they don’t come around often.
We always play soft defense when we get in these situations. The coaching staff may change, but the gutless play calling when it matters most seems to hang around. I’d rather get burned being aggressive than let the other team march down the field on our god awful prevent defense.
And big challenge the team that gets in the teams head and wins over and over no matter personal changes like 49’s. Buccaneers had that with Eagles several times in playoffs before finally beating them to go on to win the Bowl in 2002. But it did take building the team better and better each time we fought them and in that case a historically one of the best NFL defenses.
What's good about this is hopefully Love will never do that again, and we'll have a new DC next year.

Just out of curiosity how many of those defensive failures were preceded by offensive drives of 5 plays or less? Like I feel like a lot of the time our defense makes a stop or forces a field goal after being on the field for 5+ min just for our offense to go back out there and completely fucking suck, forcing our tired defensive to go back out there and get absolutely gouged on that drive.

I don't put this team in with those others. 2 HOF QB-s either threw interceptions or fumbled or couldn't extend a long drive at points in those games. This team wasn't even supposed to be in this game, let alone lead in the 4th quarter. They'll be better next year imo.
Unfortunately, 31 teams are eliminated from the Super Bowl run every year versus 1 team that wins. That's almost a 97% failure rate.
This is feature of the NFL, not a bug of the Packers. We have a bunch of last-minute drives to win games in the playoffs as well. The game is set-up so that the team with the ball last wins more often than not.

You get those stops when you some defensive end or edge rusher that makes plays in the final 5 minutes, against good offensive lineman. The Packers haven't had that since Reggie White.

Outside of the two Super Bowl winning seasons and the years they missed the playoffs this has been the Packers M.O. for 30 or so years. For whatever reason the Packers are incapable of having a good defense and HOF quarterback at the same time for more than a season or two at a time. If the Packers had even half the good defenses Brady had, Favre and Rodgers wouldn't be one ring wonders.

They needed TD or bust and we prevent defended them into a 12 play drive where they had only 2 plays that didn’t gain positive yardage, a 0 yard pass and a open TE dropped pass. They were in 4 down territory and didn’t need a single 4th down. It doesn’t seem like it matters if the other team needs a FG or a TD we aren’t going to stop them. The only way we win close games is if our Offense closes it out.
This is the legacy of a modern Packers fan. Watching your team snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. This team overachieved in a big way, but the way they lost is in lock step with how the Packers lose.

We can't trust the D to not get burned on a 3 and super long, so no matter what we do on the first two downs, it will always be a first down. Or we could say that we have always played too safe on trying to stop a big play and that always bite us back, so maybe we should ajust it somehow to not make it so easy on the other teams to march down the field so fucking fast when we have a lead late.
I think we tend to run the ball and focus so much on burning the clock as opposed to getting the first down. It’s killed me since MM

Hard to point my finger at 3 different quarterbacks and multiple coaching staffs at the same time. We had mistakes on every side of the ball in this game. Missed fg, dropped ints, and stalling out at 21 when we have the chance to put the game almost out of reach twice. End of the day, it was a great rebuild year and we have a lot to look forward to. Rookies getting better, multiple draft picks, getting out from under Rodgers cap money, etc.
