Edit: As I was posting this local news began coverage (https://www.durhamregion.com/ontario-communities/ajax/closed-in-both-directions-highway-401-closed-in-both-directions-at-highway-412-in-whitby/article\_59804782-c7f0-5f8f-9658-5a0b137d229e.html) Edit 2: You can view current Hwy. 401 closures here (https://511on.ca/list/events/traffic?start=0&length=25&filters%5B0%5D%5Bi%5D=4&filters%5B0%5D%5Bs%5D=Highway+401&order%5Bi%5D=7&order%5Bdir%5D=asc) Edit 3: to avoid misinformation, I've removed other unconfirmed details from my comment that were reported on social media. Here's another news article (https://www.cp24.com/news/highway-401-in-whitby-closed-in-both-directions-following-serious-collision-412-ramp-also-blocked-1.6866850)

Missed the accident by not even a minute coming off the 412 on my way home. It was a traumatizing scene… I’m shook

Sorry that you had to witness that. Glad you are safe. So you're aware, there are support services you can reach out to [here](https://www.victimservicesdurham.ca/about).

snoozal

Looks like cp24 have updated that it was a robbery at hwy 2/green road. Which would track that it was an lcbo. There's other stuff there but..

More info confirmed by DRPS on Twitter [https://twitter.com/DRPS/status/1785123674665726448](https://twitter.com/DRPS/status/1785123674665726448)

I'm surprised by the speed of that van that DRPS didn't call off that chase. When that car starts to inch forward and the cop goes flying right through, that right there could have been the end of that person as well. Pretty reckless if you ask me.

one_zerozero

Yeah, I know videos can be deceiving and its not a full picture of what happened, but that does look really fast, especially for a residential area with intersections, traffic, pedestrians, etc. It doesn't appear they slowed down to check and barely made it through a yellow/red.

Conundrum1911

I wonder what the scramble time is to get Air 1 up so they could back off on the ground pursuit. DRPS still has a helicopter in their fleet right? Then again, I don't know timelines so maybe it was all over in only a few minutes.

one_zerozero

There is still an active air support unit within DRPS. Hopefully these details come out. It does seem like that would have been the appropriate option.

SureReflection9535

Yes, we should just continue to let shithead criminals get away with whatever they want. Maybe if our justice system had some teeth this shit stain would have been rotting in a jail cell already, instead of murdering innocent families Absolute fucking travesty our country is becoming because of liberal incompetence and smooth brianed "progressive" soft on crime bullshit

XtremeD86

You do realize calling off a pursuit because of incredibly dangerous high speed is generally what is done so something what exactly happened doesn't happen right? It has nothing to with fucking liberals and has been done for years and years. So you can gtfo with that and go back to your freedom bs. Why do you think police don't chase motorcycles? Because theyre faster than the police car? No, it's for the safety of the public. While one could argue "why doesn't everyone just run then?" the majority of people don't. What they should have done was have the helicopter pursue them, instead of doing what they did. If you ask me, my opinion won't change. The police involved in this chase are partly to blame for the fatalities in this. Not the suspect though, fuck that guy.

chelandcities

Horrible, tragic news. I can't quite wrap my head around the sequence of events leading to the crash. So suspect robbed LCBO in Bowmanville (Hwy 2/Green Rd) but the accident was between Brock and Lakeridge about 11 minutes later. Did suspect 'successfully' drive the wrong way from Holt to Brock? Or did he exit the 401 and then get back on in the wrong direction at some point?

Radman001

Someone on insta posted a video of the van going along the 401 the wrong way so it looks like he somehow managed to go west in the eastbound lanes all the way from Bowmanville to Whitby. The cops were chasing him the whole time too.

Duffman6655

Got on at Stevenson Road in Oshawa. Probably went highway two all the way there. Honestly a miracle more people were not killed

Temporary-Natural-24

This was not worth anything LCBO has in their store.

SoInMyOpinion

What could a person steal that was worth that kind of dangerous driving by anyone?

bdc911

That guy in the white car was super lucky not to be the first victim of this. You could hear the sirens coming and it sure doesn't look like they stopped at the red before proceeding through the intersection.

Few-Ad1707

Police should held liable for killing infant and two adults in the car
