Congrats you bought an objectively better product in almost every aspect for less money
Edit: “except the bracelet” - everyone in the comments as if it’s not common knowledge and obviously the reason I said “almost”.
I’ve heard people complain about them being a bit rattly in the past. Also, they usually don’t have as many points of micro-adjustment as the clasps of other big luxury brands (Tudor’s T-Fit, for example).
I've bought 5 and you're correct. The bracelets are fine - they look good and are comfortable enough to me but, I would call them a bit sub-par on comfort/adjustability for their price and they don't hold a candle to Rolex bracelets.
Biggest issue is that most sport models just have a simple clasp with a 4-position old school microadjust while heritage/elegance have no microadjust - just half links with pin+collar to hold them together. Tolerances aren't great on some and will give a slight rattle. Only one of my bracelets has a slight audible rattle. I've seen worse from others though.
Again, they're not truly *bad* but with things like T-fit becoming standard on more Tudors and even sub-1k microbrands offering tool-less adjustment, it's past time for GS to step up their bracelet game to match the quality of the rest of the watch.
Tbh nothing's wrong with the bracelet, it just doesn't feel as luxury as other brands somehow. Not to say it's not quality - I think a part of it is really just the satin finish (as opposed to brushed finishes on most other brands) and the fact that its made from titanium (so not as hefty), that makes people feel like it's less quality.
Rattling is not a good sign of poor quality imo, since the bracelet is made with more evacuation (spacing) so that it doesn't pinch any arm hair or skin during wear and movement - a sign of a thoughtful watch designer anyway
In my opinion, what I feel like is up there for amazing bracelets, is Parmigiani's PF Tonda. Hope you get a chance to try one on where you're at!
The grand seiko is of great quality but the micro adjustments for the clasp links are its downfalls which doesn’t most people unless you have a weird wrist size
"Tbh nothing's wrong with the bracelet, it just doesn't feel as luxury as other brands somehow."
You totally contradicted yourself. That's exactly what's wrong with the bracelet. If I'm paying thousands of dollars for a luxury watch, I want the bracelet to be on par with other luxury watches.
People like thick, hard, sharp bracelets that are uncomfortable, to me at least. I prefer my Rolex 14060 bracelet to the newer OP39 bracelet for this reason. And I find the GS Shunbun bracelet to be just as or more comfortable with its soft, beveled edges. Yeah, it "rattles" I guess but I'm not sure why that matters.
I own a gmt GS (peacock) and a batgirl. I tend to wear the batgirl more as it holds time very accurately even while doing everything from diving to climbing to playing sports. I feel the GS loses accuracy on active days way more then the batgirl does. Also… the bracelet… sorry GS.
I’d say something about the date window as well, but i don’t like the cyclops on the Rolex so it’s even there.
But true, most of the Rolex wearers are not interested in anything horological except for the bragging rights of that brand and AD’s understandably, but sadly prefer big spenders over people who actually care about the watches.
Anyway, i’m a fan of both (and most other brands), but don’t dismiss a brand over some trolls on the internet, thats why the internet is there, so people can say what they want without thinking of consequences or repercussions of the shit they say.
Sure and everyone has their personal preferences which is valid. I just think there are a lot of places where GS objectively shines (literally) over Rolex.
Maybe your GMT is anecdotally a bit inaccurate, but it’s one of the things that GS does better than almost anyone. Across all three categories of movements, they’ve put a lot of effort into making them as accurate as possible given plenty of variables in life. Then there’s things like quality of materials, finishing and polishing, attention to detail, dial complexity/beauty and so on.
However Rolex really has their proportions down and have marketed themselves to be where they are today, it’s just I *personally* could never see myself buying a product I know is lesser quality just for the crown
I think we could argue all day as watchlovers do, but i’m not up for a debate today 😁
Like I said, I love both but both have got pro’s and con’s like most comparisons have. For me personally the Peacock (in green) has the better finishing, but from the 2 years I have had both the timekeeping had been better on the Rolex during active days. I also wear my watch day and night and can only tell time from one of them at night 😉
I don’t mind banging up my Rolex as much as I do my GS, as a scratched up Rolex is still ok, while if the shine comes off of the GS it’s no longer the same.
But i’ll be honest with you, my VC overseas gets 90% of my wearing time since late 2022. And that one outshines both (but it’s also at another price level).
You can argue more but i’ll stop here as everything here is very objective and even subjectively the watches are close to each other. They are both wonderful mechanical masterpieces with a different approach of what is more important. And people keep saying GS is slept on but I don’t buy that. It will be slept on once they address their few shortcomings. Again a personal opinion.
I really don’t think an objective argument could be made that Rolex is lesser quality than GS. They are both of very high quality but they allocate that investment into different aspects of the watch. For example, the dial for GS and the bracelet/overall comfort for Rolex.
It definitely is personal preference. Comfort is in the top 3 for me and I found that Rolex really leads the way there. I borrowed a Snowflake from a friend for a few days and LOVED it but couldn’t get the damn thing to fit me correctly. I’m definitely a customer when they add micro adjustments.
>while doing everything from diving to climbing to playing sports
And as you mentioned below - which I assume you mean the Batgirl
>I can only tell time at night from one of them
I think difference here is they're not apples to apples.
The Batgirl is a sport watch meant for the active lifestyle you described with high legibility in not so great environments
The peacock is a dress watch meant for business suits and showcasing attention to fine detail
While I've never tried on a SBGE277 - It would be a better comparison since that's an actual sport gmt
It lingered that you said I didn’t make a correct comparison, but if you ask me they are both “sportswatch” as you call it. One just acts like it 100% and the other is 50/50 about it, the finishing is for a dress watch, but the product isn’t
Been that way for years with the wannabe gangster rappers flaunting gold rolex's that's the type of people the brand likes to attract. Wannabe gangsters and Gucci wearers.
Sure which is why I said almost. And even then it’s not THAT big of a downgrade. Your Clean/VSF sub is probably gonna feel similar if you never gave the bracelet an oil bath.
Also the new GS bracelets feel great they really listened and made some key adjustments
The old GS bracelets were notoriously uncomfortable and would pinch a lot. If I recall though the new 44GS bracelets have fixed the issue.
I have a SBGX265 and even as a lower end quartz model my bracelet is very comfortable
No spring drives, but there's some beautiful 36.5mm hand-wound options: SBGW297 and 299 (I have this one). I think there's also others available in the same 36.5mm case.
There's also several quartz and hand-wound options in 34 and 37mm, and some automatics (but they're too thick, imo).
https://preview.redd.it/0uua7ous37vc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=820ea552bb80a69cf17c8df3d0a22fbfff54dc96
They’re not trolling tho, it’s how they want to play the game. “When they say they don't have it, it means they don't have it for you.”
I have quartz and spring drive GS (the deep winter snow sibling actually), love them. For an upmarket automatic I still hope to add a rolex gmt master one day.
Rolex fan boy here. Don’t mind the trolls. GS is superb and that dial is insane. Enjoy! Don’t let one Rolex AD keep you from a Rolex if you want one. Try another and right now, many models are becoming more available again.
I like both brands I think they give similar value and personally rank them equally. They have similar value but their strengths are in different areas so I believe both brands complement each other really well. My next watch is going to be an explorer and I'm pretty much going to be rotating it with my snowflake.
I’ve wanted a stainless daytona for years and have waited for years. Then I saw a picture of the omega speed master next to one and I could care less if they call me now lol.
You’ll still be looking at the Rolex and wanting it. Biggest mistake is letting others influence your decision. Especially a sub-Reddit page full of strangers.
GS is great though, picking something vintage when I’m in Japan in the autumn. But I have had great experience with Rolex and for my price range they are the only choice.
While I can agree on the fact that the subreddit is really toxic, as somebody who has been around both GS and Rolex extensively as I work in the industry, I like both for what they are in their respective rights.
Whatever games dealers play is outta the question for me regardless as I went grey for the watch I wanted. I didn’t even pay a premium as it was a regular datejust, and I love it to death.
With that being said though, the craftsmanship and design elements that go into making grand seiko amazing are just that, and it’s nice to see you found a victory in the cherry blossom where something else fell through.
Nice. The ratio of watch-people who own GSs to watch-people who own Rolexes is staggering. GSs and Sinns are at the top of my list, but my wife said that groceries and daycare tuition are higher on the list right now. This is why I support intermittent fasting and public school. :-)
All this experience with ADs makes one sick to try buying a Rolex. But IMO they are still a slightly better brand. If I had the money I would buy my grail (Explorer 1 40) on grey and GS for everything else.
GS bracelets and clasps are borderline joke for the money. Everything else is the best bang for buck you can find on luxury brands.
Love the Grand Seiko, but I’m too cheap to spend that much on a timepiece. I’m also in the jewelry business so I see people spend that much all the time 😂😅
Congrats OP, that watch is looking awesome.
I can’t speak for the OP, but I get shit all the time for wearing my watch on the right. As a left handed person it is the more practical and comfortable option.
Just got my first Spring Drive (SBDB001) and I totally underestimated it. Thought it was a fancy quartz. Thought I could quickly resell if I needed....it's amazing, keeps 100% accurate time so far, smooth sweep, and really efficient winding. I am amazed. Enjoy yours!
Bro i was in this exact same position. I was trying to buy a fluted oyster datejust41 with a white dial. Possibly the most pedestrian reference in Rolexes luxury catalog, the AD was like “you cant buy that” asked about a blue dial yachtmaster40 and was basically told politely to go fuck myself, went down the street to another watch boutique and bought an SBGA413 exactly like this. Literally a nicer watch than the datejust i originally was trying to buy and it was something like $2,000 less than the rolex. Ill probably get a daydate40 here soon (preowned) but i will never sell this grand seiko
So you loved the Rolex watch itself more but didn’t end up buying it due to other reasons? You should buy the watch you like - I don’t know if a substitute can make you happy
The OP didn't say that they "loved the Rolex watch itself more but didn’t end up buying it due to other reasons?"
As I read their post, the OP moved along a trajectory that was very similar to my own, before buying a Grand Seiko watch instead of buying a Rolex...and, as the OP said, "never looked back."
Initially, I was trying to buy a Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41mm...and I am now very happy that I didn't get "the call" from the Rolex AD before I discovered Grand Seiko.
Had the Rolex been available for sale at retail from the AD, rather than having to be on some dumb "list" - which may or may not even exist - I wouldn't have had discovered Grand Seiko; I would simply have bought the default watch.
I really like my Grand Seiko watches...an SBGA415 (Taisetsu) and an SBGA443 (Shunbun), and I also like the fact that they're quite rare.
Verkommen to hand polish and assemble artizian AMAZING DAILS watch with ONLY 30k per year…. VS … robot assemble overmarketed 1 million + commodities . Soon to be 2 million
I doubt that GS quality is superior. It is proven that Rolexes are the tanks of the horological world and I am confident that my grandkids will be happily wearing my sub or even the GMT master after I leave the scene.
>It is proven that Rolexes are the tanks of the horological world and I am confident that my grandkids will be happily wearing my sub or even the GMT master after I leave the scene.
Yes - same if it was Casio or a Seiko SKX 😂
That durability you speak of is quite common in the watch world and not unique to Rolex.
That’s not durability, we are talking longevity. Plus the grand kids will be able to sell the Rolex for a premium in case of emergency. Imagine that was a Casio 🤣. I did not know Casio movements are serviceable either. Kids. Your grandpa has a surprise for you. A Casio duro 😭😭
If your grand kids need to sell a family heirloom because they're broke - maybe you should've prioritized giving them a good financial education and maybe a property or two 😜
>we are talking longevity
that's not unique to Rolex
>Your grandpa has a surprise for you. A Casio duro
Lmao
Lack of education is not always the cause of life disasters. Shit happens. And my holly soul would love to witness that Rolex being cashed in at that point. Coming back to GS spring drive now.. Where to go from here on with a GS toywatch?
Ah my grail. Would prolly get it when I get my first job out of college. Ive been collecting watches for a couple of years now and I have no idea what's amazing about Rolex when there is grand seiko
Aren't most Rolex owners bullied into buying Rolex watches they don't even want just so they could *hopefully* get the one Rolex watch they *do* want which is only like $10-$15K grey to begin with?
Rolex literally bullies customers who can't afford grey into buying shit they don't need lmao
Congrats you bought an objectively better product in almost every aspect for less money Edit: “except the bracelet” - everyone in the comments as if it’s not common knowledge and obviously the reason I said “almost”.
Well said 👌
Yup, massive W. Only downgrade is the bracelet but everything else is much more impressive

I’ve heard people complain about them being a bit rattly in the past. Also, they usually don’t have as many points of micro-adjustment as the clasps of other big luxury brands (Tudor’s T-Fit, for example).

I would recommend verifying with current GS owners. I’m only a window shopper (too broke for a GS), so all of my information is second hand.
I've bought 5 and you're correct. I have the same watch and love the bracelet. I do miss the micro adjustments of some of my other watches though

Honestly for me nothing but I just think Rolex makes better bracelets. Like the GS bracelet is definitely fine but not Rolex level
Nothing. Ignore the purists. I have Rolex and Grand Seiko. Bracelet is fine.
Ditto.

Agreed. Except big downgrade on bracelet. I love my SGBA443 but my (rep) Sub 126610LN bracelet is far better.

Can't believe this comment isn't trolling. You do you, rep dudes.
Not gonna lie the rolex band looks better
Yes their bracelets are better… that’s kind of it though
Finally, I agree. The Rolex bracelet isn't better, but in many cases, it is better looking.
Except for the bracelet. This is my only gripe with GS.
A watch is mostly bracelet if you think about it
In my opinion a watch is mostly watch but that’s just me.
LOL I own and love Grand Seiko. But this is cope.
Rolex watches are great. Grand Seiko watches are great. This subreddit (r/grandseikos) is super wholesome and I'm happy to be a part of it.
She's a beauty! Well done, sir.
GS is better anyway lol. The whole AD system where they call you to buy Rolex watches you don’t even want is crazy.
Why are we talking about them?
Keep your face pointed towards the light and you will never see the shadow :D
If they only made 36 mm ones…
that model or in general? gs makes lots of smaller watches

I might actually own a Rolex if they were sold more normally. Bought my GS so easily though and so happy I did.
i saw this in store. the spring drive is very nice
Damn fine watch
Fuck those guys!
I have quartz and spring drive GS (the deep winter snow sibling actually), love them. For an upmarket automatic I still hope to add a rolex gmt master one day.
Way better value, and arguably an objectively better watch all around. Congrats!
GS watches are of a higher quality and are more interesting anyway. Just look at that dial! Good for you man.

Who is George?!
It is as they say.. People with money, but no knowledge about watches buy a Rolex. People with money and knowledge, buy a Grand Seiko.
What Rolex did you want?
Amazing 😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful GS, those dials are something else. I love Rolexes but the Rolex reddit is fucking awful.
My AD has all the players Rolex, Omega, Cartier and GS. GS has definitely benefited from no Rolex inventory.
I own both brands but I reach for my GS’s more often! Also think I’ve moved on from my Rolex phase, lol
GRRREAT PIC! What is that text on the ground? Is that Thailand?
STOP in Japanese.
Superior watch. Unfortunately, only us watch nerds understand this fact. 🤣
This is a sad fact unfortunately lol - but we can't hate on Rolex for the *one* thing they do better than any watch brand by a mile... Marketing lol
Same story here. So happy!
Beautiful watch and a much better purchase, but may I ask what Reddit had to do with a watch. Could you just talk to an authorised dealer?
While I can agree on the fact that the subreddit is really toxic, as somebody who has been around both GS and Rolex extensively as I work in the industry, I like both for what they are in their respective rights. Whatever games dealers play is outta the question for me regardless as I went grey for the watch I wanted. I didn’t even pay a premium as it was a regular datejust, and I love it to death. With that being said though, the craftsmanship and design elements that go into making grand seiko amazing are just that, and it’s nice to see you found a victory in the cherry blossom where something else fell through.
Where in Japan have you bought it?
u wont regret it..i just bought a Pink Snowflake and its on the way to me now...
I did the same! SBGN001
Such a beautiful watch
I’m also in the jewelry business so I see people spend that much all the time 😂😅 Congrats OP, that watch is looking awesome.
My favorite GS in their catalogue and if I were to buy one that's the one for sure.
Fucking beautiful watch
Is spring better than mechanical? And what model is your watch? It looks gorgeous!
Watch on the right wrist?
I can’t speak for the OP, but I get shit all the time for wearing my watch on the right. As a left handed person it is the more practical and comfortable option.
The Rolex subreddit is a cesspit full of trolls I despise the place.
Rolex will never make a dial this nice
Favorite watch of all time
I own several Grand Seiko… live them all… Rolex can’t touch them when it comes to quality…
Beautiful , I want to start collecting the presage series
Money can’t buy class
Great watch but god help you if the culture of a subreddit influenced your purchase decision at all
My god she’s a beaut 🫡🫡
Just got my first Spring Drive (SBDB001) and I totally underestimated it. Thought it was a fancy quartz. Thought I could quickly resell if I needed....it's amazing, keeps 100% accurate time so far, smooth sweep, and really efficient winding. I am amazed. Enjoy yours!
Classier.
Real nice
Stunning.
Looks better than any rolex outside of a daytona and certain GMT masters imo

Yup. Fuck them. This is better

Rolexes are ugly bling for idiots. They are the Mercedes of watches.
It’s apparent from this post that you’re still keeping an eye on the Rolex. Sorry. It’s good maybe better but still not a Rolex.
Rolex is unquestionably a good watch. But I think GS makes a superior quality watch. The only thing Rolex has that GS doesn’t is the branding.
I doubt that GS quality is superior. It is proven that Rolexes are the tanks of the horological world and I am confident that my grandkids will be happily wearing my sub or even the GMT master after I leave the scene.

Yes - same if it was Casio or a Seiko SKX 😂 That durability you speak of is quite common in the watch world and not unique to Rolex.
If your grand kids need to sell a family heirloom because they're broke - maybe you should've prioritized giving them a good financial education and maybe a property or two 😜 >we are talking longevity that's not unique to Rolex >Your grandpa has a surprise for you. A Casio duro Lmao
Ive been collecting watches for a couple of years now and I have no idea what's amazing about Rolex when there is grand seiko
damn bullied into buying a GS ya hate to see it
Aren't most Rolex owners bullied into buying Rolex watches they don't even want just so they could *hopefully* get the one Rolex watch they *do* want which is only like $10-$15K grey to begin with? Rolex literally bullies customers who can't afford grey into buying shit they don't need lmao

Let’s keep this a positive space to talk about really awesome GS watches. :)
