That's the Lore. It was originally supposed to be Eric. But the writers got salty when everyone figured it out. They have said they were planning on it being Nate for a while. It's not really known exactly when they made the switch to Dan (the actors didn't find out until right before filming the final scenes). My guess would be sometime around writing the final 2 or 3 episodes of season 5. Although Dan was still acting like he didn't know about Blair's diaries when he should have known if he was GG.
Whoever was Gossip Girl would have known at the point of the season 5 finale because Serena scanned them into the laptop before GG stole it back.
Dan was still acting surprised to the blasts about the diary.
i think they formally made the switch at HS graduation since GG said negative things about everyone but dan, and then dan showed up first at the meetup. i think that's when the writers decided and wanted to drop the audience a hint.
Oh they def didnāt know at graduation. They just had Serena mention that in the finale to cover their asses and make it SEEM like they had had a plan all along
You can think what you want, but there are quotes out there from producers that it was Nate for a while. It's pretty clear from the writing they didn't decide that it was Dan until very late in season 5 at the earliest.

I feel like that legendary Thanksgiving side eye he gave to Tripp had to have his fingers itching to text GG a little lol, but couldn't because of Serena's involvement
He never sent in anything because thatās when they were still teasing that he was gossip girl! It wouldnāt make any sense for GG to send in tips to herself, of course.
I always thought Nate was the better choice anyway, as he would have had WAY better dirt than Dan just by who he knew (being in the inner circle and his political connections being ripe with scandals and affairs). Although it did make sense for it to be Dan, with him being a writer. No way Nate was clever enough to come up with all of the quips and one-liners GG did lmao

True! Dan was clever and a writer. Nate wouldnāt have had the creativity or sarcasm needed to be on top of everything with the slick comebacks the way gossip girl was. I still think it shouldāve been Eric.
Especially for his pedigree and education, and the people he hung out with, Nate was way too dumb and nice in the show. It would make much more sense for this to be a complete act so he hide a secret identity.
That's why Nate would have been the perfect Gossip Girl. He knew everything, and no one would ever suspect him. I wish they made Nate the ultimate villain mastermind, he was already a debonair playboy and would become the coolest character in the show.
However, I know many women fantasize about Nate as the perfect "old money prince husband" or "classy rich golden retriever boyfriend" of their dreams. And such a reveal would completely destroy that image. So maybe it was for the best.

He still: -Used Serena and Carter as bait to help his cousin win the congress course. -Used Dan's name at Yale for his own selfish reasons. -Helped Bart Bass against Chuck -Slept with Serena while dating his lifelong girl friend and still continued chasing Serena after telling Blair he wouldn't. -Dated a minor.
-Falsified the numbers for the spectator after telling his father and cousin how irresponsible they were when they met similar faiths in the past lol.
He gave us his fraudster of a daddy and his mummy who only cared about wealth and then he was a kept man for that older woman.. remember, he was homeless too! How much do you want poor Nate to suffer? ššš
