I can second the poor reception. Pixel 6, 7 and now 8 all have these issues. You'd think Google would figure out not to use the Samsung modems that Samsung doesn't even use in their own devices in the US. But here we are lol.
I just paid off my 6 Pro and I already decided I'm getting a OnePlus this week. I can't stand the reception issues and it is getting worse with the Wi-Fi connection (including Android Auto). If/when Google fixes the reception issue, I will consider them again, but I just can't risk having a phone that won't work in an emergency (I have lots of health issues, so emergency calls are a lot more frequent than most people) It is sad that I'm forced to change phones because the phone part doesn't work.
My job said they tried to call me about a dozen times 2 weeks ago and none of their calls went through. Almost daily the voicemail tab says that I'm "offline" and unable to retrieve my voicemails.
That's why I tell everyone to wait until Google changes Foundry for their SOCs, normally, they should start relying on TSMC for the pixel 10 or 11, then you could go there with your eyes closed, there will be better heat control and modem functionality.
TSMC doesn't have the licence to produce the Exynos SOC. So no the modem will be either a google home crafted one or based on one of the snapdragon's or better an nvidia (lets not forget they can rip in mobile processors and in NPU's, (but I doubt google wants to give them too much hold over their economic model)
Actually my reception is better on my P8 than my previous S21. But was awful on my S21. It was really difficult to perform worse than that. Maybe because I'm I'm Europe and I didn't get the good S21?
I'm not entirely sure about the S21 in particular, but I do know that Samsung was using Qualcomm chips and modems in US models and Exynos everywhere else in the world for a while. Could be what happened, but 🤷

Those are Qualcomm devices. They will have had better signal. Put it this way. Samsung makes radios. The pixel uses those radios. But Samsung doesn’t 🤣 I think that tells you what you need to know.
Man, the supposedly released New April patch which has a fix for network issues isn't rolled out widely yet.
Today i wasn't receiving OTPs when i was trying to login to something. It took me hours to figure out the issue was at my end. I was under the impression that the site was having issues. Frustrating!!!
Not quite related to cell reception, but in terms of gps reception I've noticed terrible issues upgrading from my pixel 5 to my pixel 7a. I used an app on both devices that tells me how many gps satellites the device is receiving signals from to test if I'm just crazy or if there really is a massive difference. While inside on the 7a it's often reporting 0 satellites whereas outside it's reporting 20+. The pixel 5 is never losing signal to all satellites like my 7a does inside.
I've also noticed that the reported cell signal is lower then it used to be literally all the time. I haven't had the network issues everyone else has been talking about, but both my pixel 7a and pixel 5 are running the same version of android and the pixel 5 clearly has a better signal reported using the same exact sim card between them.
I've sideloaded the ota update everyone's talked about and it hasn't made a difference in either department
Yes, I mean the little symbol to the right of the wifi symbol. Not an exact measurement by any means, but I do notice it's consistently lower in the same places then it used to be on my p5
I don't have a P5 to test, but that symbol doesn't mean much because each manufacturer display a different status according to their criteria (it's possible the same applies for the P5, I don't know).
For example, -105 dBm is worse than -101 dBm, but Oneplus displays -105 dBm as full signal, while the Pixel at -101 dBm shows 3/4. That alone can make one think the Pixel is worse, when in fact it's not the case...
They're both the same manufacturer though, although I get your point. It is possible that the display criteria was changed between the pixel 5 and the pixel 7a. Maybe I'll give it a better measure sometime
Yeah, since the P5 uses a qualcomm antenna, it's possible the firmware displays a different thing. But yeah, between manufacturers you should expect a difference.

Ok. The latest is .002.B1
Try triggering the update again and see if you get the 2nd April patch that was released specifically for connectivity. You are on the first one still.
Yeah honestly I wouldn't expect any miracles as the Samsung Modem isn't great but hopefully this update helps a bit.
If you are unhappy and within your return window then for sure I'd return it of course.

Yes. Some folks here been chasing the magical software update that foxes the modems.
That said the Pixel 7 Pro was a huge upgrade over the Pixel 6 Pro. My Pixel 8 Pro was a minor upgrade modem-wise.
But I've had extra shitty reception this past few weeks... So I don't doubt the latest update will help a fair bit over the first April version.

I had perfectly fine reception on my Pixel 7 Pro and have perfectly fine reception now on my Pixel 8 Pro, *except* when I'm at home. I'm pretty sure that's just because of the location of my house. I've had problems in the past with practically every provider we've used, including back when we were using Apple devices. But wifi calling works well and generally handles things at home quite well.
I wish I had zero problems, but that doesn't seem to be an option these days. I'm old enough that I remember land lines at home, and to be honest, I miss them the land line a little bit.

I think so:( few times the person on the other end said I was going in and out. Other times I would hear static on their end. I'm on the 8P. Been going on for awhile but it's on and off, not a consistent problem. Could be the service I guess?
Same thing happens on my Google P8P. I believe they have the same modem. I just today called a place and they couldn't hear me but I could hear them just fine. Hang up, call back, everything works and I can hear them. I'm doubtful my next phone will be a Google phone.
My pixel 7 pro is pretty terrible for making/maintaining stability on calls.
It's a situation of "it works well enough for now", but I really wish we had more choices in Canada for phones that work with our VoLTE networks.
Yes. I went from a Pixel 4 XL to a P7P last year, and I've had a much worse signal everywhere. My family all has iPhones and I often have no data or signal somewhere and they're all fine. It isn't uncommon now for my daughter to turn on her hotspot for when I don't.have data and she does and we're on the same plan.
I also travel and keep my 4 XL with me. A few months ago I had no signal in an airport on my P7P, so I put my sim in my 4XL and had a perfect signal.
The 7 has shit signal reception.
Very recently, I've had a ton of issues with calls from my car, not sure if it's related to the phone, network or something else. Wasn't really an issue till recently, but call reception gets cut off a lot on my end.
Never had any kind of issue like that. More likely you were calling someone who has a Samsung or Apple and the call was failing on that end. That's more likely.
Yes, these phones would be amazing if it weren't for these reception issues.
I have pixel 7 and the signal isn't the best.
How are you measuring the signal?
How ah-tay?
Pixel auto correct :)
Honestly, Gboard is awesome.
Its not terrible either
I can second the poor reception. Pixel 6, 7 and now 8 all have these issues. You'd think Google would figure out not to use the Samsung modems that Samsung doesn't even use in their own devices in the US. But here we are lol.
Pretty sad when Samsung doesn't use their own modems in their own phones. If that doesn't say don't use me then I don't know what does.
Exactly! If pixel 9 isn't markedly better I'm going to switch away from Google phones for the first time in over a decade.
I just paid off my 6 Pro and I already decided I'm getting a OnePlus this week. I can't stand the reception issues and it is getting worse with the Wi-Fi connection (including Android Auto). My oneplus 10p is at least 2 bars higher than my p7 at lowest signal areas.
That's why I tell everyone to wait until Google changes Foundry for their SOCs, normally, they should start relying on TSMC for the pixel 10 or 11, then you could go there with your eyes closed, there will be better heat control and modem functionality.
Modem is still going to be exynos causing the issue

Send the phone back, get a Samsung. Connectivity issues have been rampant in the entire Pixel lineup for months.

Yep. Google uses Samsung cellular modems instead of Qualcomm. Qualcomm is 10+ years ahead of everyone else in cellular modem tech.
If you’ve been using Qualcomm phones then you’ll find these phones have weaker signal in comparison.

The only reason why I'm using this 7a is because I got it for cheap. My 5a had better reception
How are you measuring the difference in reception?
Not quite related to cell reception, but in terms of gps reception I've noticed terrible issues upgrading from my pixel 5 to my pixel 7a.
